  I wouldn't say Cuckoo is a cheaper alternative. It's direct competition across all models. As any other product, there are different SKUs for different price points.

  Which Rice Cooker is the best?

  Yeah you didn’t mess up lol. if you eat rice regularly, it’s one of those buy-once-for-10+ years things. super consistent, keeps rice warm without drying it out, and it handles different grains better than basic cookers. people usually only upgrade within zojirushi if they want induction heating or pressure (IH / pressure IH models), but those are way more $$ and honestly overkill unless you’re super picky or cooking fancy short-grain daily. [other stuff](https://deo9gr5ha90bn.cloudfront.net/?q=GMKAO2089) like cucuko is also great esp for korean-style rice imo. for better texture, especially for short-grain and brown rice, just make sure it uses induction heating.

  What’s the BIFL item that you love but everyone around you thinks is ridiculous?

  I’ve had a fair amount of zojirushi products and they’ve all worked incredibly well. I had the neuro fuzzy and it was amazing, but it got lost in a move. Now I have a cuckoo (South Korea’s zojirushi) and it cooks rice 95% as good for half the price, plus it has a GABA rice feature which cooks brown rice to just a slightly chewier texture than white rice.

  there are two real contenders for rice cooker BIFL Cuckoo from S.Korea Zojirushi from Japan. I live in europe so zojirushi wasn't very compatible for me here due to availability and the plug. Either one of those will last 10-20 years

  That Cuckoo looks solid! Just a heads up though - make sure it has a proper steamer basket/tray if you're planning to steam veggies or whatever. Some rice cookers just have those flimsy inserts that don't work great for anything beyond reheating leftovers

  Depends on if they get used -- and how often. For me, the "worth it" appliances are: * Robot Coupe R2 Dice with all the attachments (there are two kinds of food processors -- Robot Coupe and "less than.") * BlendTec blender * Robot Coupe or Vitamix stick blender (big price difference here -- the Robot Coupe is superior, but at a hefty price increase) * Kitchenaid (or better yet Hobart) stand mixer with at least the grinder attachment if not others * PolyScience Sous-Vide pro * MoccaMaster and LaPavoni coffee makers * Zojirushi or Cuckoo rice cookers My coffee grinder is no longer made. So I bought a couple burr replacements. It is unlikely to ever die.

  Bought a Cuckoo CR-0375FW rice cooker for $60 early this year, and i've cooked rice myself in a pot for years, but the combination of ease of use, set-it-and-forget it, easy clean non-stick was a game changer for me. There are many more expensive japanese rice cookers, but this 3-cup model makes more than enough for a family dinner, and doesn't take up a spot on the range/stove. Close the lid, turn it on, and it beeps when it's ready. If i'm making a tortilla soup or any chicken soup, I can make a cup of rice in \~15-20 minutes while the other is simmering without even thinking about it to toss in to make the soup heartier. Mexican rice, Yellow rice, wild rice. Whatever you feel like. I'm really happy with it, and you can tell it's well designed. These folks take their rice seriously! =)

  I got a Cuckoo rice cooker on sale at Costco online for 80 and it's soooo good. Four cups is the limit, but I am a single person household so that's fine and I can make leftovers.

  Which countertop water filter should I get?

  I’m in a similar situation to you, unfortunately. I went to Target today and got a small Brita water pitcher, but now I’m saving up for a more permanent setup. Did you end up choosing a countertop model?  I found this [water filter comparison post](https://www.reddit.com/user/frantically_unfinish/comments/1n6gno7/comparing_water_filters_for_home_use/) on another subreddit where someone has laid out all the different variations of water filters. The countertop Cuckoo model looks amazing (I’d choose rose gold), but I can’t find many reviews on the specific model. I’m a big tea drinker too, so I love that it does both hot and cold water.

  Carbon steel pans. Aluminum sheet pans. If you like stainless, the all clad 2nds sales are solid for getting discounts (homecooksales). I prefer wustoff knives, but a leather strop can help keep the edge indefinitely between sharpens. I personally think le crusset bakeware is great. And my cuckoo rice cooker is going to be BIFL (got spare parts to make sure it stays that way). Everything else is to taste. But if personally say a fan over the stove that blows outside is an essential

  My zojirushi died today, with a lot zap, and I have read good things about cuckoo elsewhere so that seems like a good option these days. Wirecutter also has it as their upgrade option, so guess I’ll give it a go, thank you. Cuckoo CRP-P1009SW

  UK Rice Cooker that has a good keep warm function

  I love my cookoo rice cooker, which is from Korea. However, the German brand Krups makes rice booker with keep warm function, and it is decent.

  What’s something you bought once and never had to replace?

  I did the same, now I have Zoji and Cuckoo. Because the zoji makes better rice I went back to it, but the new one can do rice faster if necessary, and i use it for bread.
