What newer Pampered Chef items have you found to be BIFL quality?
I am a little late adding to this thread but this has been my experience. When PC started it was a family owned and american made company. They were sold to Berkshire Hathaway and has slowly turned in to not so great items. I grew up on PC because my mom and a few of her friends used to sell it. Their warranty was amazing and lasted forever. So did their products. Now? Their cookware is not that good and they have changed a lot of how things are made so they aren't great. Their stoneware? Love it. Their coated knives? Not worth it, I suggest Cutco, they are amazing for cutlery. Sadly they have changed so much my family doesn't order a whole bunch from them anymore.

What was the BIFL upgrade that instantly exposed all your cheap versions?
Bought my first Henkel chef 4star chef knife in the mid 80’s and have added many more in various sizes up until the late 90’s. They are kept on a magnetic knife holder on my wall and are sharpened when needed. Also have a few made by wusthof. I inherited my eldest siblings Cutco kitchen shears and those are a beast.

Looking to buy first quality knives.
I've plugged cutco several times here over the years. But some people don't like the company and I get that but their knives are damn near indestructible, and there warranty is fantastic (and easy to use). I've collected cutco for around 30 years and I still don't have a dull knife. Just really basic sharpening now and again. Otherwise I would highly recommend wusthof, another brand that has good service and I love their knives as well. If you get into super high-end knives they actually become more of a pain in the ass in my opinion just because they are susceptible to more environmental damages. If that's the direction you want to go though I would recommend doing some research ond what you want your primary chef's knife to be etc. seemed a little excessive for me as the Chuck stuff is plenty sharp.

I gotta weigh in on this one. I bought a Cutco potato peeler 25 years ago and it's still just as sharp as new. It was pricey, like around $40 25 years ago. Worth every damn penny.

Cutco knives are durable. We can argue about cutting performance and angles and serration and quality/price all day, but the things can take a lot of abuse and stay knife shaped for quite a long time. They are chonky boys. That weird sandwich spreader thing got a ton of use in our house too. Looked funny, but worked. 🤷🏻♂️ I’ve had my Tojiro DP set for 10-15 years now and am quite happy with them.

My cutco steak knives are 18 years old now, and my wife has been using them for everything the whole time. She then puts them in the dish washer (yeah I know). They are just now being considered for sharpening.

Ok. I know its silly And a mlm. And predatory. But I've been using my cutco steak knives for everything between steak, chicken, pizza, cardboard boxes, shorts, construction paper, tape. Basically anything in or near the kitchen for maybe 27 years, and they still cut through steak with ease, even if the "patented d-style' serrated edge is kinda worn down. I got em for free for going to the weekend long brainwashing hedonistic party they threw the slave sales force. I still have people tell me they have "those knives you sold me" sometimes.

What is the best kitchen gadget under $100 that you own?
I have a pair of cutco kitchen scissors that I use practically every day. I use a bench scraper for more than baking A really good vegetable peeler is good to have If the don't have really good knives, that's important. You don't have to buy a set. If the do have knives but don't have a magnetic wall strip, those are amazing. Try to get things that they will use constantly instead of single purpose items that will rarely be needed.

They do, though. Sometimes, most of the time maybe, via operator error. Can't even tell you how many times I've seen a fine knife used to open a can. If you cooked professionally, you've seen it, too. Usually just the tip, but that counts. And then there's the whole smashing garlic thing, with a bad angle and a hard blow, the knife can snap. The thing about Cutco is that the "why" doesn't matter. Send it in, and for the price of postage, you get a fully restored or brand new knife.

Actually, what you are trying to say might make sense if we are talking about RETAIL PRICE here My point is that I paid only paid 10% of retail and the warranty was such that even if these are not the greatest knives in the world, they are certainly B+ and combined with the price/quality/warranty they were an incredible buy that would be very difficult for me to beat. They will satisfy my kitchen needs for my remaining decades……,

I had a similar experience and love my Cutco knives. I can't say they're the best kitchen knives, because I haven't tried all the others. But I'm pretty confident that they qualify as BIFL, where most (all?) of the other premium brands do not. I once bought one that was broken at the first pin. The blade was like on a hinge, and the knife was useless. For the cost of postage, Cutco sent me a brand new knife...

Henckels Kitchen Knives. I finally replaced my chef's knife and was very surprised in the difference.
When it comes to Kitchen knifes, imo, you definitely get what you pay for. I was gifted a small Cutco 10 knife block about a decade ago. They were used, but they were still the sharpest knives I ever used. I kept them for 10 years and never had to have them sharpened., which by the way Cutco does for free for life. Yeah you read that correctly. If you buy an eye from them, they will sharpen it for free for the entire life of the knife or replace it if it’s damaged. Anyhow, I just saved up and got myself a brand new cut block a much larger one 24 knives I think. And I decided to pay it forward and gifted my old block to a friend of mine. He said that they are still the sharpest knives he has ever used. If you wanna buy an excellent set of knives splurge on Cutco knives. They are absolutely the best on the market. And they are guaranteed for life. Which means they will sharpen them for free, forever, and if they can’t be sharpened or repaired, they will replace it with a brand new one. Now that is a buyout for life situation.

Cutco scissors are decent. They separate and have lifetime/forever warranty. Also, if you want 100% stainless/corrosion resistance... then you will be sacrificing edge retention and hardness. You will not find a metal that is any good at cutting without some risk of corrosion. Even Magnacut or s30v runs the risk of corroding (those are some of the best metal compounds/alloys on the market). Take care of your tools and they will take care of you.

Some of these have been mentioned already, but repeats are worthwhile when they’re this good! 1. All Clad pots. I use them daily and with a little barkeepers friend they still look good as new. 2. My grandfather’s cutco knives. They’ve got to be 60 years old now? I don’t even get them sharpened, and I use them every single day. 3. My cutco garden pruners. I was going through crap pairs all the time. Dull, breaking, etc. These things are so durable. I love them more than anyone should love garden pruners. 😂 4. My aunt’s gold hoop earrings. I inherited them, and they’ll never go out of style. 5. Vitamix. Going strong for about 15 years now. 6. Bonus. My old Jeep wrangler. 26 years and still kicking.

What are the best scissors for everyday use?
I have different ones for sewing. They're gingher brand. I'd never, ever use them to cut anything but fabric. Dressmaker shears aren't made to cut things like wire, cardboard, sandpaper, duct tape etc. The Cutco ones can cut anything and not even flinch.

I would definitely suggest putting high quality kitchen sets especially knives. There are some decent brands like Wüsthof or Shun but they are a lot more expensive and don’t have the best features. Cutco is the brand I would much more highly recommend as it’s forever guarantied, dishwasher safe (unlike the others) and the sets have built in discounts for a total of being cheaper than the other knife brands while still high quality. Unpopular Opinion: “Researching Before Buying” as an Excuse for Overthinking
This is why I thrift. My BIL (brother in law, I didn’t miss an F lol) does a lot of great research on big purchases like knives. Meanwhile I’m buying my decent knives literally one knife at a time; I posted about a CUTCO knife here one because I love it more than my “better” brand knives and this sub tore me a new one but it’s still my favorite knife. I also have a quality steel KitchenAid made in Germany with a hefty tine I’ll be resharpening for the next decade, and a Chicago Cutlery bread knife I might take to my grave. For each of these I have 2-3 knives I tried and didn’t “cut it” (literally), I just donate those. My cookware is Le Creuset or thrifted, I have only two exceptions (3-ply SS IKEA 360 pot) and off-brand Hexclad (Snowclad) frying pan. My dinnerware is Corelle or Lennox Fine China. My partyware, bowls are all vintage borosilicate glass: Anchor Hocking, PYREX, ARCOROC pink swirl. I don’t own any glassware of any kind that isn’t borosilicate. My tea set is moss rose (mixed porcelain makers, same pattern). I do not use paper plates or bowls ever, I own plenty of reusable vintage pieces. If I can attach an appliance to my KitchenAid stand mixer I will do that before buying yet another thing. I have a spiralizer, meat grinder, and pasta maker. All of my utensils are vintage (including Cutco! lol), excellent quality high temp silicone, or wooden. I use a wooden spoon or spatula every single day because hardwood has barely been improved upon. For clothing I require 50% minimum natural fibers such as cotton, wool, and linen. I don’t count rayon unless it is labeled organic. I read all the fabric labels and can thrift by feel, like I never mistake a polyester sweater for wool and can feel different cotton blends. Natural fibers last longer, and my wardrobe is like 75% thrifted. I also thrift BIFL boots and shoes, which generally don’t exist but better boots last a very long time and have exchangeable parts like boot liners and insulated soles so there is rarely a need to buy new. To each their own but I’m mostly here to learn about what things last so I can then thrift those things or find them on Marketplace.

Yeah somebody gave me one Cutco knife about the size of a steak knife for a thank you gift with a company logo on it. I thought ok whatever but I’ve had that thing for over 10 years maybe even 15 and it still cuts like the day it was new. I always grab it if I am going to slice a block of cheddar cheese, summer sausage, steak, and things like that. Not too long ago I thought about looking them up to see how much a set cost and over half of what I found was people complaining so who knows.

I have two sets I return to over and over - the Cutco my husband got from a kiosk at the county fair kiosk back in the late 90s and $1 knives from the Asian store. Cutco is warrantied for life. And they have free lifetime sharpening. But be warned - Cutco is an MLM so buy from their website ONLY! Don’t let them have a rep contact you. There’s no need for it anyway.

People not realizing the even though Cutco is an MLM their knives are out of this world. Duck and weave their sales people but get a couple of the knives. I still have mine that my husband brought with him into our marriage 22 years ago that he got at one of those kiosks at a county fair back in the late 90s. Buy them from their website to avoid the MLM babes.

I see your point… but, I wash my Cutco knives in the dishwasher all the time and they are still perfect. Unlike other posters, I have only had mine for a couple of years so far, but I am sold on the lifetime warranty. They tell you that if you ever have a problem with them (rusting etc.) to mail it back to the and they will fix it …for life.
