  Does anyone know of a jacket this general style that you can still buy these days that is tough as hell?

  Check out the Noah Mechanics Jacket or the Ben Davis mechanic jacket. Quaker Marine Supply Co. Brighton Jacket is wool but similar style. The Orvis weather breaker is a step up from lands end. Close but similar is the Dehen pilot jacket but there is only blue right now.

  Yeah. Filson quality has gone down a bit over the years but still well above average. I know they have waxed stuff too. Haven’t looked at either site lately. Dehen makes real quality stuff

  Warmest coat made of natural material that doesnt include down feathers?

  A Navy N1 Deck jacket fits the bill. The good ones have waxed canvs exteriors and alapaca lining and are true BiFL. So warm and durable. Mine is the Dehen version but there are a ton out there. Can be found on Ebay or similar, occasionally in good nick.

  what winter coat are yall using?

  I got a great deal on a Dehen N1 Deck Jacket a few years ago and it will out last me for sure. Thick waxed cavnas outer, shearling collar, heavy duty hardware and alpaca lining. Bonus is that it's MiUSA. A beast and I will never be cold again.

  Anyone found brands doing real quality without retail bloat?

  Are you just looking for less expensive? I guess maybe Bronson. They make pretty high quality and only sell through their website direct to customers. There are a lot that have a high price, but it is due to being outstanding quality and not because of PR or middlemen. Companies like Dehen (knitwear and jackets) and or Crown Northampton (shoes) would fall into these categories.

  A note about clothing quality

  Something I encounter fairly frequently is that people can still recognize decent quality clothing, but for many, it never goes past that. Here is a recent interaction I had with a friend of a friend: FoF: "Wow, that's a nice sweater! Who makes it, I want one" Me: "Thanks! It is Dehen. They make really nice stuff. You want to try it on." (note it was a Shawl-sweater so, wears like a coat) FoF: Trying it on "So, nice. What's the brand again?" They take out their phone to look them up after I answer. "Eek, way to expensive. I have never paid more than $50 for a sweater." Me: "It is made really well. I actually bought that one used, I think I paid $100 for it 5 or 6 years ago." FoF: "You paid $100 for a used sweater!" Stairs at me like I just grew a second head. Me: Putting it back on. "Yep, and if I lost it I would look for another used one. If I couldn't find a good used one, I would buy one new in a heartbeat." Lots of people don't even want to consider things like "Cost per wear", they will complain about how things have gone to poor quality and fall apart, but then don't want to pay the cost of decent quality clothing. The idea of buying used is anathema to them. I know that it isn't everyone, and that this is a community of people looking for the better quality stuff (and for the most part willing to pay the extra to get it); unfortunately though, fast fashion is popular for a reason.

  The MA-1 Bomber Jacket is Perfect

  I really like Bomber style jackets. I have heard that the Alpha Industries one is pretty good, but have not held one. I have a couple Bomber styled jackets from Dehen. I would also call them BifL and like the alterations that they made from originals, which are primarily differences in cut, pockets, and some materials.

  BIFL - Best products from the USA

  There are great makers of lots of items from the US. The problem is, most people don't want to buy something that costs what is does because the people making them are paid a living wage. Even on here, every time I see someone ask for "moderately priced", I assume that they mean "just barely more expensive than Temu". Things I use every day that are made in the US: Dehen sweaters and jackets Freenote Cloth flannels and pants We still have a few decent furniture manufacturers (My house has King Hickory, England, Oak for Less, and some Amish made furniture) All-clad cookware

  Carhartt Detroit Style Jacket

  Heat Straps makes some great jackets that look like they took a Carhartt jacket from 20 years ago, then improved the construction quality while adding lots of quality of life improvements to them. I bought one for a buddy of mine for a wedding gift. I wore it around the house for a while to see if it was something that I might want for myself. However, it just felt like complete overkill to me. It felt like I was wearing an armored jacket. Hey, if that is your thing, more power to you; Heat Straps is probably one of the top ones you can buy if that is what you are going for. My favorite jackets, that might still be up your alley, are my Dehen Flyer’s Club and Cargo Carrier jackets. They are just so well designed that they feel an extension of me when I am wearing them. They are still very durable and built extremely well, but they don’t make me feel like I am wearing them. The Heat Straps was something that I would want to take off immediately, the Dehen are comfortable all day. The shell fabric on the Cargo Carrier jacket is particularly nice, it is a dry waxed herringbone cotton that does not look or feel like waxed cotton. I highly recommend it.

  Doubts about waxed cotton durability

  I have 3 waxed cotton jackets all from the same manufacturer (in my case, Dehen). They are all different in one way or the other, the tags inside of them state the fabric and type of waxing. The heaviest jacket feels like it might stop a small caliber bullet, whereas the lightest is about 1/2 as thick and has a completely different feel. The light one is labeled as a “dry waxed” cotton supplied from a Scottish mill and has a herringbone weave. It is definitely not as durable as either of the other two, which are more traditionally waxed canvas, but I would hardly call it a fragile material. Long story short, waxed cotton can mean many things.

  I'm looking for a warm winter coat that is not bulky

  Just moved from New Hamshire, so am used to New England winters. My main advice would be to learn to layer. Then no single item is going to be too thick and you can mix and match for the unpredictable weather up there. In your price range, I would recommend that you try to snag a used Dehen on eBay. They are classy and you definitely won't be replacing them in a year or two (I have one that is >15 years). You see their Flyer's Club, Winston, and Cargo Carrier jackets come up pretty frequently, as they have made them pretty much unchanged for decades. Their Deck Jackets are excellent, but you will pay for it and the one I have is heavy enough that I only really wore it while hunting or ice fishing in Maine.

  BIFL Woolen Gear: Dehen 1920

  I just got my shawl cardigan in the mail. It's like a heavy worsted wool -- so it's kind of coarse feeling vs cotton. It's not like a wooly yarn sweater that was knit -- those are the ones that I associate with being itchy. Ask yourself if it's truly making you itch or if it just feels a little coarse against your skin. Like I said, if it's really bothering you I'd just see if you could return it. As for me, I absolutely love it - feels like it's going to last a long time, and it looks great. Not bulky/shapeless/grandpa like some cardigans.

  Same. Wool used to drive me nuts on bare skin. Somehow I seem to have grown out of it. The Dehen sweaters are all made from “worsted” wool that’s generally softer than other types.

  Got my Dehen for I think $75 a few months ago. With that budget you can easily get a kickarse hoodie. The Warehouse lot 484 (483 is the sweatshirt) is $170 at Standard & Strange and that is before a 20% off new customer discount. That will take it down to $136 [Warehouse lot 484](https://standardandstrange.com/products/lot-484-reverse-weave-loopwheel-pullover-hoodie-black?variant=43268215931053) Looks like they only have S and M, but it does run pretty loose.

  Haha that's what i hear from everyone whenever i ask about Dehen. Though they seem to be known more for their woolen knits compared to their cotton stuff. Definitely a great look for the brand and gives me confidence if i buy from them. Just hope it not only hype and because of the actual product.

  Best Heavyweight Cotton Hoodie

  I have the Dehen one and it is pretty good. I would include the Warehouse & Co lot 483 as it is both quite heavy and the brushed interior is pretty plush. That said, looks like you are keeping it strictly MiUSA. That said, the Japanese manufacturers are pretty tough to beat. If staying MiUSA, I would also include 3Sixteen. Actually, they are made in Canada. North America I suppose.
