What product category has gotten worse in quality, even at the premium level?
Dehen 1920, WeatherWool, and Darn Tough are 100% still absolutely uncompromising BIFL clothing. I can reasonably say Filson still is BIFL based on about 10 items I've bought over the last 3 years.

Alternatives to Filson
Recently I visited the flagship Filson store in Seattle and they have a manufacturing floor where some clothes are made. I believe it was a style of vest and the mackinaw jacket were both made there. You could see the persons on the sewing machines making them right in front of you. Really cool. Check out Dehen 1920. Made in Portland. I have a sweater and hat from them, both excellent quality.

I’m looking for a BIFL hoodie
Champion Reverse Weave, I’ve gotten vintage ones on eBay for $40 and the quality is amazing. Dehen 1920 seems to make good things. I also have a few crewnecks from Real McCoy’s and the hoodies may be a bit more than your budget but the quality is genuinely amazing. The crewnecks are $200 but they’re so good I think it truly is 5 times better than a $40 sweatshirt.

What are the most durable shirts?
US brands like freenote cloth, dehen 1920, 3sixteen sell nice t shirts. Japan made like whitesville, samurai jeans. merz b schwanen has gotten popularity from the TV show The Bear Wonder looper sells one of the thickest t shirts at 17.5 oz (593 gsm) but who’s paying 250$ for a t shirt

Why is it so hard to find well-made clothes that aren't insanely priced?
My personal experience - pinnacle of quality and construction is Dehen 1920. Those pieces will outlive you and they're like $350-425 for sweaters (to use your example). They're all manufactured in America too. Not sure where you're getting $700 sweaters but my guy tells me you're picking random examples online and not something you've actually purchased.

Men’s cardigan - preferably natural fibers
Would you consider used? If you would, I suggest that you buy a used Dehen 1920 Shaw Sweater. They make their own worsted wool yarn (heavy twist). They last forever. I have one that I bought used, it was maybe 10 years old when I bought it and I have worn it regularly for the last 5 years. It still basically looks new.

Carhartt Detroit Style Jacket
Heat Straps makes some great jackets that look like they took a Carhartt jacket from 20 years ago, then improved the construction quality while adding lots of quality of life improvements to them. I bought one for a buddy of mine for a wedding gift. I wore it around the house for a while to see if it was something that I might want for myself. However, it just felt like complete overkill to me. It felt like I was wearing an armored jacket. Hey, if that is your thing, more power to you; Heat Straps is probably one of the top ones you can buy if that is what you are going for. My favorite jackets, that might still be up your alley, are my Dehen Flyer’s Club and Cargo Carrier jackets. They are just so well designed that they feel an extension of me when I am wearing them. They are still very durable and built extremely well, but they don’t make me feel like I am wearing them. The Heat Straps was something that I would want to take off immediately, the Dehen are comfortable all day. The shell fabric on the Cargo Carrier jacket is particularly nice, it is a dry waxed herringbone cotton that does not look or feel like waxed cotton. I highly recommend it.

I'm looking for a warm winter coat that is not bulky
Just moved from New Hamshire, so am used to New England winters. My main advice would be to learn to layer. Then no single item is going to be too thick and you can mix and match for the unpredictable weather up there. In your price range, I would recommend that you try to snag a used Dehen on eBay. They are classy and you definitely won't be replacing them in a year or two (I have one that is >15 years). You see their Flyer's Club, Winston, and Cargo Carrier jackets come up pretty frequently, as they have made them pretty much unchanged for decades. Their Deck Jackets are excellent, but you will pay for it and the one I have is heavy enough that I only really wore it while hunting or ice fishing in Maine.
