Deuter. Mine has been through the ringer shows no sign of wear. They use the best materials and they're made in Europe. Most of them have a mesh backing that keeps your back from getting sweaty. All around great company.

I bought my wife Deuters and it looks quite sturdy. And we both have Jack's Wolfskin jack pot deluxe backpacks and so far after 2 years they feel like new ones. We also both have Timbuk2 messenger bags but Timbuk2 also sells backpacks. These are bit pricey but after a year of almost every day use, occasional heavy grocery buying, and using during travel - probably the best bifl bag I have ever bought. Would recommend.

so only real issue is almost no bags are made for 40oz bottles (the 40oz bottles are literally designed large enough to be something you have to carry and thus show off). Cute is something that's totally personal choice. for what you're looking for Jansport bags (with the list of items probably aim for the 30L size bags [https://jansport.ca/collections/laptop-bags](https://jansport.ca/collections/laptop-bags) Alternatively if you are going to have longer commutes (walking/biking etc.) something like an Osprey, or Deuter pack (osprey if you're in north America, Deuter if you're in Europe as available to you) Lastly if you aren't doing huge commutes take a peek at the Fjallraven laptop packs as they might work well.

What did you wish you had at 21?
Seconding this. My cool traveling aunt gave me a really nice Deuter backpacking backpack before I moved out of my home country and I've since brought it with me moving to three other countries and visiting dozens more. Got a lot of miles/kms with that thing and it's still in great condition. A really high quality winter jacket would also be worthwhile. :)

Proper heritage style hiking backpack
Honestly this one looks more fashion based than genuinely rugged. It's pretty hard to find a good canvas rucksack with modern ergonomics, especially an inbuilt frame. Almost none of them will have a decent hipbelt. If you really want to satisfy hiking specs, buy a frame and rig it up. Takes more effort for sure, though. Probably easiest for you is just to stick to Deuter or Osprey and get a black one, if you care about the aesthetics.

That looks heavy as fuck for actual hiking. Probably the prepper/bushcrafting communities would be a good place to look, but most won't be hydration compatible and many lack good harnesses because half those guys seem to just be out cosplaying. A lot of people into that sort of thing will tell you to look for military surplus but I gotta warn you, as someone who used one in the military - those are fucking shit and I never want to carry one again and vastly prefer my Deuter when I'm not doing ultralight trips. Can't decide on a backpack
My current backpack is a Tom Bihn Synik 30. Have had it two years and it’s great. Before that I used a Deuter for about 10+ years before I retired it. It still gets used occasionally and it held up well.

Camping suggestions?
gear isn't BIFL, unless you never use it. the best you can hope for is reasonable repair costs and good warranties. good european brands: tents: vango, quechua, hilleberg (most expensive but very high quality) pack: deuter, berghaus cooking: your current canister stove is great. wood is really hassle for frequent backpacking. given that you're in the UK, what if all you can find are rain-soaked twigs? trangia stoves are popular but alcohol is more fussy.
