Merino wool base layers - which are the most durable?
Smartwool is solid, I've beat the hell out of mine for years and they're still going strong The euro brands you're thinking of are probably Ortovox or Devold - both are tanks but pricey as hell

Merino wool base layers - which are the most durable?
My experience with wool undergarments: I use Devold every day, wash maybe once a week, just a wool program with wool detergent in washing machine, hang over to dry. No issues so far, normal wear and tear. I have 2 sets, so far 3 years on both of them.

Why is it so hard to find well-made clothes that aren't insanely priced?
Not the poster you asked, but we have [Dahle](https://www.fjellsport.no/merker/dale-of-norway?_gl=1*1c2l64t*_up*MQ), who also produces knitting yarn and knitting recipes, and [Devold](https://www.fjellsport.no/merker/devold). Both very popular labels who produce buy-it-for-life wool sweaters and other quality goods. Machine made, obviously, as a hand knit in Norway is not commercially viable at all. You can buy a pair of handknit mittens for about 100 usd, though you may find some less expensive hobbyist hand knits at Christmas fairs and markets.

Duckworth feom US is always my fiest suggestion. Svala from Finland, Devold from Norway

What are your favorite niche BIFL items that are currently available?
As a Norwegian, Dale is alright, but there are also many more brands that make jumpers: Devold, Rauma, Norlender, Braatens. For woolen underwear: Brynje, Aclima, Janus, Devold, Lanullva

TIL: "Devold Norway" Knitwear Is Still Fully Made in Europe
Yeah they are great. I have one sweater I bought from Norway in 2015 and its still in great condition even though its ny most used shirts in the colder months (which is like 8-9 months here). My cat has caused couple of snags to it but they are easy enough to repair

Same. Honestly these high prices are the “natural” cost of a garment. In a world where all humans have a good life and fair wages, these are the prices. I feel like that’s something humanity needs to acknowledge to move forward as a whole. That, and maybe we don’t need closets bursting apart with clothes. A lot of it is a mindset change.

Just wore mine today. Folding it up to put it away is like handling chain mail, they're fantastic.

Indeed, my heart skipped a beat when I pressed the buy button on a 200 euro sweater, but weirdly I have zero regrets after having the product. I somehow tend to forget how much I spent on stuff once I can appreciate the quality of the product.

Has anyone found any TENCEL or TENCEL-wool/natural blend activewear?
Devold has tencel merino mixes.

Has everything we buy reduced in quality over time? Has anything increased in quality or stayed high quality and durable?
I don't understand everyone's great experience with Patagonia. Everything feels plastik-y and cheap. Granted they have a repair program but there are tons of brands that definitely feel higher in quality (fjallraven, lundbergs, ivanhoe, devold...)
