What Snow Boots to Buy?
Didn’t know that, I’ve had icebugs and Viking (Finnish and Swedish) boots the past 10-15 years still looking like new, not sure you can get them over there but some lines are still locally made in Europe instead of china. Martens (if production line is from the ones in UK) are extremely durable as well and should easily last a decade.

Most comfortable joggers to own?
My shoes wear out in 3 months, the internal support structures fail. All runners replace their shoes often. For long term comfort, British made doc martens, NOT the Chinese made ones. Not quite a jogger. But they can last for years.

Looking for vegan shoes, which last a long time with frequent walking
Doc Martens vegan boots are good these days. The "Felix" material they make them with wears really well over time. Their *newer* vegan faux leather is made of modern synthetics, which does mean some plastics, but the quality is night and day versus older material styles. Commenters who are saying things like "vegan leather is plastic and will wear out and crack, it's garbage" are burying the lede fairly deeply. I get they likely don't mean to, but it's not like cured and tanned animal skin has a monopoly on durability. Here's a fun fact; Kevlar is a synthetic polymer. Kevlar is a plastic. There are durable, long-wearing plastics that definitely give the appearance and function of leather. If you're one of these commenters and are thinking of coming at me, I have several more words for you; Cordura, paracord, challenge sailcloth of various kinds, xpac, treated canvas. I can list more materials, *we can talk about relative durability if you really want to.* I've had older vegan docs; these crack, flake, get that "shattered plastic" look. My current vegan docs are *six years old* and have worn like leather through, at this point, five and counting salty city winters. That's my recommendation and anyone thinking "you just can't beat leather" should really do some materials research, especially for gear that's *intended to be used in harsh conditions, and over long periods of time* as they will be *shocked* by the advances in materials science.

My BIFL Columbia jacket
Great jacket. Had something similar back in the day but got rid of it when the zipper broke. Had I know how crappy things were made in the future…I would have kept it and fixed the zipper. Same goes for my 1990s doc martens…should have kept it. Looks great on you my friend. Cheers

This is the way - once you go welted you never go back. Look into something like Red Wing Iron Rangers or Doc Martens for life if you want boots, or check out some proper English makers like Trickers or Churchs. Yeah the upfront cost stings but when you can resole them 3-4 times over their lifetime it's actually way cheaper than burning through cheap shoes every 6 months

Wife wants a high quality leather purse for Christmas (NOT “luxury” brands)
Not a fan of luxury brands either but recently went to the outlet and bought a leather Michael kors purse for $100. I keep one bag in my closet at a time and it's been 7 years since I'd bought one. I removed the MK tag that hangs off and there's just a small metal portion with the name which I don't mind. I went to a few different bag stores at the outlet and I liked Michael kors the best because I could find options that didn't scream the brand name loudly. Also never tried these bags but onequince has leather bags available I considered before purchasing mine at the outlet. Imo they are still expensive for not being any type of brand name but claim to be genuine leather. Doc martens also sells leather purses sometimes that maybe your wife is interested in.

I get the Dr. Martens that are handmade in England. They are stitched and not glued and use better materials than the Chinese made shoe. They cost a little bit more but are worth it IMO. On a side note, my kids both have feet issues like bunions and fused bones (I blame that shit on their mother’s genes) and a visit to the good feet store was well worth it. So if you have one one your area or something similar, you might look at that as well.

I'm still wearing my Doc Martens from 2002. Light construction work, maintaining 3 acres with a tractor. I've been told, however, that the new ones are not the same quality. Some say the original manufacturer was spun off into Solovair and is still good. That's probably what I'll buy when I'm in need again.

Okay so, my feet shape is similar to yours and even bigger, I take a little bit less steps than you do, also bike around a lot. Unfortunately Timberland’s have been my go-to as well, I wear boots most of the time, so it works out. If you’re willing to branch out the style little bit, Palladium has nice shoes but you have to try them on before buying, the size & shape changes a lot per style. I thrifted a vintage pair of made in england dr martens, and honestly I wouldn’t suggest them. The leather is much stiffer than what Timberland uses on their boots and after years of breaking in, if I take more than 7k steps they destroy my feet. Their boots in pisa leather (the softer one) are a lot more forgiving, and quite light if you get hot easily. I have a pair of Camper’s in a similar style with a thinner sole that this image that are quite comfortable, but the breaking in is still a process especially around the ankle. You can try to find also “creeper” style shoes, they have less holes at the top, and a thick sole. I don’t know any super comfortable ones, but maybe you’ll luck out. I know some men’s shoes like Ecco sometimes makes similar shoes to these, but you’d go through them in even less time.

It was when Doc Martens started being sold at Aldo and the quality tanked. After an original pair lasted a decade, my Aldo specials fell apart in a year. After that I bought some Wellington welted AEs. I had the outsole replaced every 5 years. They are 20 years old now and look new-ish after a buff.

I have that same pair, (almost) the same age. 3 sets of laces and one minor repair (stitching) and they're still some of my favorite shoes.

What’s something you’ve bought once and never had to replace?
I have a pair of brown leather Doc Marten mary-janes that I bought in 2005/6. I've worn them a lot since; they spent a year in storage and got completely covered in mold. I deep cleaned them and they are still incredibly intact. Leather is supple, soles don't have cracks, soles haven't WORN DOWN ( even though my tread has affected most of the soles of my other shoes). Just amazing quality and craftsmanship. I miss good products.

Had my doc martens for 10 years. finally replaced them this year. wore them every day for at least 6 of those 10 and then seasonally for the last 4. Didn’t take care of them nearly well enough and they still lasted a long time. still wearable but wanted a new pair as a do over for proper care also cast iron pan.

I bought 'For Life' doc martens back in 2015 so technically I do have them for a lifetime. I'm on my third pair and all were replaced because the soles wore down, so i'd actually much rather resole them so I don't have to wear in the leather again every time. And yes, the quality has decreased over the last few years, but I'm going to get my value out of this offer for as long as I can!

The made in England Docs were the best. From the 90s. They lasted years and I didn't even take care of them. I wish I still had those ones, because I tried buying a pair of these new docs in 2023 and I couldn't even break them in. They felt plastic and stiff, unlike the older styles. I had to sell those abominations on marketplace.

I got a used pair of docs off of mercari that are about 15-20 years old. After like a year, the fabric by the heel ripped because I kept pulling them on instead of untying them completely. After I've gotten that fixed though, no problems!

Never having tried Solovairs while vouching so hard for them pretty much describes half this sub. I’ve tried them, owned 2 in fact. They’re ok. If you can get them, get them. If they’re not accessible to you but Docs are, get Docs if you like the style. You either wear them out or get tired of the style, but I don’t see myself owning them for life.

I am 100% living in your brain. I'm there. Inside it. But.....Docs are Docs. Some love the look. You get that translucent Solovair sole which 0 other places have for slight look and comfort differentiation. You get the yellow stitches which no one else has. To some, they will repair them to new condition. Not my circus, not my monkeys. But, we, as humans, often do seemingly ignorant shit. I spent $6000 repainting my shitbox car. That was dumb as shit. But I did it. It was worth it to me. To everyone else, it was dumb as shit. I'm sure you have similar dumb as shit moves. :)

All Saints ain't got boots like that unless I missed them. And based on looks and pricing and lack of website detail, zero of them are of a repairable construction method, so not BIFL. And I can't find those exact ones on the Dr. Martens website but Solovair has [https://us.nps-solovair.com/collections/boots/products/s8-551-bk-zip-g](https://us.nps-solovair.com/collections/boots/products/s8-551-bk-zip-g) which are similar but don't have a laces zipper and are high shine which most would say is less appealing from a BIFL standpoint as the shine wears/cracks. If you like the look of the Dr. Martens, get them. They, like Solovair, are bottom tier BIFL boots so set your expectations there. They can be resoled and repaired by a cobbler, but you have to find a specialty cobbler which means shipping them off which is not ideal for some....and some don't mind. Sadly, most of the asshats here think that unless you are buying $600 Nick's logging boots, every boot sucks. But either Dr. Martens or Solovair should be fine unless you plan on using these at your oil rig job. Are they Nick's quality? Nope. Are they better than a similar find on the shelf at Target? Yep.

Goth/Punk-style combat boot recommendations?
BIFL boots are goodyear welt construction. Blowfish, Demonia and New Rocks are not unless you find a pair that specifically states so. Dr. Martens and Solovair are recraftable for years of use....know that this style of boot does not lend itself to durability, so you kinda are at a loss out the gate.

Tired of shoes lasting 6-12 months. What to get?
There have been some great recommendations in here, as usual from this group. Another item to consider is how often you’re willing to perform maintenance on your leather shoes. I have Doc Martens leather boots that are about 12-13 years old that are heavy use in the winter. I clean and condition them at the beginning of the winter and again in the spring, (I use them sporadically in the summer). My cleaning process takes a day or two to complete. A cleaning with saddle soap, letting air dry over night, followed by a leather conditioner, allowed to dry a few hours, then brushed with a horse hair brush, then a coating of Sno-Seal to weatherproof the boots. Sno-seal is amazeballs and a true BIFL product. I’m not cobbler but, I rejuvenate lightly used leather dress shoes to donate to nonprofit organizations that help people get back into the workforce. (It’s cathartic for me)

The majority are made in Vietnam, but a handful are still being made in the original factory in (I forgot the city's name). The boots you bought in the 90's would probably last you a hundred years save for a few resoles. However, the new styles produced in Vietnam, & other countries offering the cheapest labor the brand can find, are now considered "fashion shoes" & are simply meant for teeny boppers following the latest trend to show off the brand's name on the pull tag. Having loved these shoes and boots so much in the 90's, now represents another product selling out just to make even more money. A complete let down. That said, if you're in the market for a new-to-you pair try eBay and make sure it says "made in England" on the sole.

Very sad to say Blundstones are no longer BIFL. I had a pair in my youth that lasted me a decade. Now after a few short months the soles of this pair has literally turned to dust!
I don't understand what people on here are talking about.... I have spent time in rugged areas full of farmers, hikers, and mountain bikers who live in Blundstones they are absolutely supposed to last more than a few months. Personal I have Docs and I will never go back. I wear my shoes 90% of the time in all weather and conditions and they are holding up incredibly well a few years in. Like OP I would expect far more out of a shoe like this.... they aren't just Chelsea style city boots, they are supposed to be built for adventure.

Got the same show from Doc Martin's, had it for 6 years and done a ton of traveling and hiking in it and it's held up pretty well. We'll see if it is for life, but I'd recommend it.

Chacos go up to size 12 in women's and actually provide sandal repair. They can run a bit narrow, so you could order some from Zappos (they have a excellent return policy) to see if the sizing is right. Maybe also try Crocs and Doc Martins too.

i dont remember the exact year i got my first pair of crocs but maybe 2011-12 been wearing them until this year and they were still wearable tbh but i was decluttering the house and they had to go and also pair of doc martens boots the super basic what every edgy girl wears not the expensive handmade line they have i think it was 2010-2009 maybe and i still wear them till this day and i will till they will be protecting my feet from rain, snow and cold but i remember i had to fight with my mom to get those she told me they will fall apart in two years

Top BIFL Household Items for Starting Over
I am a sustainability educator and finding things that last are a bit part of that. I’ve done quite a bit of research on possible options. Some of these I have (*) while others have been HIGHLY recommended to me. I would still check out the brand as some people who have had their (insert brand name item that they got 15 years ago here) have said that quality has diminished in recent years and won’t last as long. Also if anyone has had bad experiences with any of these, please let me know! I am a sustainability educator and finding things that last are a bit part of that. I’ve done quite a bit of research on possible options. Some of these I have (*) while others have been HIGHLY recommended to me. Comfortable work boots?
I don’t know if this is a popular opinion, but I’ve always loved Doc Martens. They’ve always been comfortable easy to break in and their souls are guaranteed for life so if they mess up, you can mail them in and they’ll repair them. And now Doc Martin actually has more than just the old style combat boot. They actually have tactical boots and other ones too, but yeah, that would be my vote.

Yeah, it's not super popular anymore. But in France, most people don’t really care what you wear. Combat boots aren’t that popular either, except in punk or metal subcultures. Except for Dr. Martens, they’re trendy right now and you’ll see all kinds of people wearing them. If you wanna wear Palladiums, no one’s gonna say anything unless it’s some hipster douchebag from a trendy Parisian neighborhood. But since fashion is an endless cycle, they’ll probably come back in style at some point, just like skinny jeans and ripped jeans. I still remember when wearing a tank top was considered the ultimate fashion faux pas and was something only your cringy uncle from the countryside would wear. Now tons of people wear them and it’s totally normal.

Boots that will last a long time

Frye boots are another long lasting brand, but I'm not sure you'll find something with the heel in your shot. There's a [Doc Martin](https://www.drmartens.com/ca/en_ca/leona-womens-smooth-leather-heeled-boots-black/p/22601001) with a heel, but you gotta put up with the yellow stitching. Ok I know you said the Dr. Martens were a fail but have you tried the 2976 Lenore Chelsea boot? I bought them for a December trip to Chicago because they seemed insulated. No breaking in was needed, the leather was actually pretty supple and the shearling lining did keep my feet warm enough. And I walked I think like 5 miles in one day in them? And the only sore-ish spot I had was from where the seam of my sock rubbed against my little toe. They are more on the casual side so while I have worn them with skirts and dresses, it wasn’t in a way that I would call dressy. My coworker swears by the AirWair soles, which I kinda thought was all talk until I bought these boots. He says the soles are so bouncy, you can’t even stomp on a bug to kill it. I have absolutely no desire to test that so I’m just gonna take his word for it. To date, these are the most comfortable boots I’ve ever owned and they’re way lighter than the other Dr. Martens boots I own.

I love my Doc Marten Chelsea boots. They are soo comfy when combined with my superfeet high arch support insoles. I have had the same pair of Chelsea boots bought brand new 3 years ago and I wear them A LOT. The key is to get the ones with the soft leathers rather than the plastic coated leathers. Other big key is to keep up with your shoe upkeep. Regularly cleaning and polishing your leather shoes works wonders for them! My hot tip for the early break in with leather boots: On day 1 after taking them home, stuff them with damp newspaper overnight in roughly the shape of feet. Remove damp newspaper in the morning and wear the boots with 2 pairs of thick socks until stretched comfy. This made my break-in period with my Chelsea boots and with my other pair of docs very minor.

I thrifted some timberlands a few years back that were roomy enough for nice insoles. Still going strong as my fall/winter boots. Otherwise, I have just gritted through the Dr Martens break in period by putting bandaids on my ankles. One of their new styles though is AMAZING easy to wear right away and they feel SO stable to walk in due to the wide sole. It's the dmxl chelsea. I love these boots so much. I do also have a pair of chelsea boots from franco sarto that have held up very well. I dont quite remember the style name though because its been years and I'm sure they dont make the exact same ones anymore.

I love my Doc Marten Flora Chelsea boots with an orthotic. They look great with jeans, dresses, & skirts and are water resistant (I spray them). I vaguely remember a short break in period but nothing major.

BIFL, but also BISecondhand. What are some things that everyone should keep an eye out for, but can commonly be found for cheap when preowned.
Doc Martens. They will outlive both you, your children, and their children. I've found lots of preowned pairs in the $20 range which is good since I want them in every color.

They didn't last forever, but my Doc Martens lasted me a solid 8 years of work. They'd have lasted longer if I knew more about maintaining leather. My mom's 1993 Kirby vacuum still works to this day. Hardest part is finding bags when the current one fills. I also have a Forecaster of Boston coat from the 90s my mom gave me that's great for all weather, takes a beating, and has only needed the the buttons and zipper replaced because I'm clumsy.

If I were traveling tomorrow, I’d probably pack my Chelsea style Doc Martens. I’ve always said I’d work a double shift waiting tables in them, so that’s my comfort test. I’ve also had them for about 4 years and they’re nicely worn in, but I keep them polished and they’ve held up well and look pretty good with just any clothing item.

I paid around $85 for a pair of Doc Martens. They're plum suede with slightly pointed toes, only available at the Portland store. I've worn them thousands of times since I bought them in 1990. They're still good - my daughters have worn them.

Interesting perspective on post-90 DMs. Mine from 98 are still kicking - and I’ve worn the hell out of them. Still original soles and welt. Uppers don’t look perfect (scuffs, etc), but they do a reasonably good job of keeping snow/water out. And the treads still give me decent grip. My 2015 pair, OTOH, have soles that are in worse shape, despite having far fewer miles on them….

The actualy factory owned by Dr Martens on Cobb's Lane and the NPS factory on the South Street. Both in Wollaston. The made in England Docs are made where they always were but they're pricey. NPS Solovair used to make original docs too, and continue to make their version of them under their own branding and without the yellow stitching to this day. NPS is cheaper and actually a bit better made, though both are on about the same level.

I'm on year 7 of Docs I bought new in 2018. They have scuffs on them but have held up REALLY well in my opinion. They're comfortable and I still have years ahead of me in them if I had to guess. I wear them to work nearly daily, although I wouldn't consider them "work" boots. I do clean and polish them once or twice a year which probably helps them stay nicer.. but I expected them to last nowhere near this long based on how people talk about the brand nowadays!

I have Docs from 1999 and they’re in fantastic condition. I don’t wear them as much as I used to but they’ve had a tremendous amount of use in their lifetimes and aren’t even close to needing resoled. Back when they were made in the UK they were absolutely amazing.

Has everything we buy reduced in quality over time? Has anything increased in quality or stayed high quality and durable?
Most of the items that can be best described as “thick solid piece of metal” are BIFL and will remain so — with a bit of care and maintenance. Le Creuset / Staub / similar Dutch ovens. Good cast-iron or stainless steel pans. Knives (the sharpener is actually more important than the knife). A tea-pot. Etc. We also have more, better looking and cheaper furniture and home decorating items. A vase is a chunk of ceramics or glass — you may tire of its style but that’s as BIFL as can be. Same for plates, cutlery etc. I’ve never considered _any_ cloth as BIFL yet again it’s not hard to find BIF-15 or BIF-20 stuff (ie, for 15-20 years). Barbour, some DocMartens, a nice leather jacket, a high-end winter coat or parka. As before, a bit of care and maintenance may be required. Some brands _have_ lost their quality standards. Birkenstock for example, DocM as I hear it.

Salvatore Ferragamo, Eileen Fisher, Frye, Dr. Martens, Cole Haan, Nisolo, Vintage coach, and LL Bean, but I stall not only sales but also stalk second hand sites. For these brands, especially vintage, I find that these are quality.

Help me clean my BIFL leather boots?
Treat the leather. I use ledervet (Dutch). There are many options. I've used Dr martens wonder balsem before, also worked fine. Imo it doesn't really matter what brand you use, as long as you do it often enough (brush off the dirt first, otherwise the leather gets damaged). Put a new sole on it. I think this is the best bifl thing you can do to those boots. It looks like the sole is one piece of foam, would be good to put a rubber sole or something on there. Let them dry out gently when wet. Don't leave them in a moist environment (mold) or put them right next to a heater (cracks the leather).
