What Snow Boots to Buy?
Depends on levels of cold and purpose. For the majority of winter here its -40C to -60C with windchill and so there's zero moisture or wet to deal with. Steger Mukluks win out every time or the Canadian Arctic Winter Muck you can pick up from most army surplus stores for far cheaper than Stegers. I wear mine into late spring and just mink oil the hell out of them to deal with moisture from melting snow around my feet on the skidoo. For late spring, summer and fall here I destroy everything. Muks, Boggs, Baffins, Kamiks, etc. Myself and wife each will burn through a pair of Kamiks per year. They're cheap at 80 bucks but again splitting issues in the heel and the salt water and we're outdoors camping every weekend. For the last 2 years though I have had luck with Dryshod. Before Muck boots sold out into private equity and went to shit they were okay. The founders of Mucks actually started Dryshod. and I would say they are much closer to the old Muck boots.

Looking for a full outdoor winter clothes system.
Silk is a great base layer if you can’t stand wool and don’t want to wear synthetic. It is not as warm as wool, but it should do the job for Midwest cold unless you are in the UP. I am a farmer in northern Wyoming and swear by Dryshod Arctic boots. If you aren’t going to be active or don’t need the height to keep your legs dry (they are made for tromping through deep mud and snow), Sorels are great snow boots.

Best rain boots for long wear!
I went through two pairs of bogs in one year, because of its soft sole it flexes too much by the toes and causes it to crack and let water in. I got Dryshods and they have lasted me 2+ years of heavy use. From November to April I pretty much only wear them in mud and snow. The inside is starting to show wear but nothing dysfunctional. I don't think rubber boots will ever be terribly long lasting but some are built better than others.

Work is paying for me to get snakeproof/waterproof boots, what wont immediately fall apart?
OP, i use Dryshod Viperstop boots when I go fishing in areas where there are rattlesnakes. They are tall boots, waterproof, and have an aggressive tread pattern.
