  Exactly my point. I am still using many items that belonged to my grandparents who passed decades ago. Tools, pots / pans, guns, knives, furniture etc. FYI: There is only one BIFL toaster that could find. It’s a Dualit made in 🇬🇧.

  Hand-held electric mixer

  I have owned a Dualit for like 10 years now, but now it is cracking up. Plastic has broken, and faced with whipping cream it gives up - it is exhausted. But it has seen regular and heavy use. So not quite BIFL, but sturdy.

  Rowlett Toaster. Great Quality

  My toaster literally kicked the bucket this morning. I’ve been looking off & on today to find something better than the cheap ones I’ve had over the years. Kinda curious/thinking about getting the Dualit Classic 2 piece toaster…But dunno how I feel about paying $300 for a freaking toaster lol. But rather have something to last this time. Anyone have recommendations?

  Good toaster for 30/35$

  bifl option is Dualit, but way out of your budget. Cheap toasters are all the same, makes nearly no difference what you get. Instead get a sandwich maker/grill. For 30$ you can get one with replaceable faces that are much easier to clean and usually gives you the option to also do waffles. These also have more beefy heating elements than toasters. I like grilled flavour much more too (cheese gives the toast some moisture...).

  When buying a used Dualit just check that all the heating elements glow evenly the timer dial feels smooth and the cor plug look solid. Toast a slice to see if it browns evenly that’s the quickest test. Four years old isn’t bad at all for a Dualit and since they’re built to last with replaceable parts, you should be fine if it looks clean and lightly used.

  If it's a genuine US model and looks well cared for you should be fine. When you test it, check all slots heat evenly, timer clicks smoothly and levers feel solid. Dulaits are built like tanks so a 4 years old one in good condition should easily last years with light use.

  What is everyone’s favorite toaster, 2 or 4 slice?

  I'd love to agree here, but the sad reality is that companies aren't making products like they used to. They aren't built to last anymore unless you pay for the build, and I rather invest in an appliance that I'm going to use everyday. I bought [this dualit toaster](https://www.reddit.com/user/Earthwormcarma/comments/1n841ux/the_best_toaster_you_didnt_know_you_needed/) a few years ago, works like a dream, and the heating element is also replaceable, and I think that's part of the spirit of bifl :)

  The Best Toaster Oven???? Does it exist, do you care???

  Ehh ... honestly, I've spent a ton of time digging into BIFL-worthy toaster ovens available on the market today and came up mostly empty handed. Lots of folks will recommend the FlashXpress from Panasonic, and ours worked great - for just 14 months before breaking. Since then, we've just been using a regular toaster from Dualit (actually feels solid) and a standard Bosch oven. Unfortunately, it seems that the toaster oven market prefers feature count to quality ...

  Which items are most needed to be BIFL but currently aren't?

  As someone else mentioned above, Dualit and other expensive brands exist. But you used to be able to get a good quality toaster for like $12. I had one from freshman year of college until I was in my early 30s. Ex tossed it to register for a “nice” one that lasted 2 years. Have not had one last more than 5 since.

  How are we feeling about Dualit Kettles?

  We were bought a Dualit Kettle a couple of months ago... It says it's got a Whisperboil function, but it's only slightly quieter than a standard kettle. Think of the Juice-Loosener from The Simpsons: "IT'S WHISPER QUIET"! It's also heavy and if you want to test whether the kettle's boiled or not, you better prepare yourself for a quick burn because the sides are metal and get very hot, which makes me wonder how efficient it is given the heat loss from the sides. It doesn't seem to boil any quicker than any other kettle I've owned... On the positive side, the spout is well made and the water flows quite laminar-ly out and the kettle feels like a sturdy piece of kit. I'm not sure I'd recommend it unless you have money to burn...I'm sure there are better kettles at cheaper or the same price point. I suspect it will last as long as any other kettle as long as you descale regularly (if necessary for your area)...

  I have no idea why he deleted it but here is the comment: Washer dryers - The closest to "life" i think you are going to get is either Speed Queen or Miele (of the two the Miele hands down) .  If you have the electricity to power a Schulthess, its probably the best machine one the world. Ovens - Miele Cooktops - Thermador Range hoods - Vent A Hood Dishwasher -  Miele - Bosch is acceptable but not its equal. For fridges/freezers -  it's probably either Sub Zero, Liebherr ,or Miele. Toaster the Dualit is hard to beat

  You don't necessarily need to, but any toaster is going to have some bits that are slightly hotter and slightly colder. The dualit design just makes it super easy to flip it around midway if you want anally retentive level of even toast.

  Time to upgrade toaster from a 60+ year old GE to a new Cuisinart. The GE still works it's just getting a bit flaky, needs a new spring and where do you get parts for a 60+ year old toaster? BUT I'll keep the GE for when the Cuisinart dies and will find a spring.

  Time to upgrade toaster from a 60+ year old GE to a new Cuisinart. The GE still works it's just getting a bit flaky, needs a new spring and where do you get parts for a 60+ year old toaster? BUT I'll keep the GE for when the Cuisinart dies and will find a spring.

  Why not get a dualit classic. They’re practically unchanged for 75 years, and offer a full complement of spares? Truely a BIFL toaster

  Euro-bros recommend a kettle please!

  Had [this](https://www.dualit.com/products/architect-kettle) for nearly 10 years, it is excellent. Some plastic on the bottom of the lid, which the water doesn't touch, and some holding the filter by the spout, I think. Can grab a photo of the inside later if you want.

  Not what you’re looking for, but when it comes to drip coffee makers the Techni Vorm Moccamaster is a buy it for life item. Extremely well built, and they sell service parts for repair instead of replacement should anything go wrong in the future. It sits on my counter next to my Dualit toaster which I bought for the same reason - build quality and serviceability
