  I have multiple styles of Duluth, some 6 years old; I’ve taken just two out of rotation. 1. snagged on laundry day and tore a hole in them, 2. the band wore out. Have had no issues with the bands or wear in any other pair. I’m heavy yet very active in both work and leisure activities; I would have consistently told you to stick with the Duluth for my two cents.

  What are the up-and-coming companies known for quality goods?

  I just recently wore my Truwerk EDO pants on a hiking trip and they were perfect. I just have trouble with the prices. I know there's stuff out there even higher, but I hate wearing $100 pants to work and trash them. I've been wearing Ariat Rebar and Duluth Fire hose pants more lately.

  I’ll second the thrift situation. I’ve got a coat I bought in my mid twenties (in a different country, mind you) that I wore very often for years. Still have it. Bought it for less than a dollar American. Thrift is your friend. Someone else here mentioned Duluth for pants. I’ve it multiple pairs myself. They’ve lasted a while. No issues. I personally still enjoy Duluth generally but buy most of my stuff used off eBay and such. The point is that good quality stuff exists but is usually older. Some restoration may be required. But if you’ve got the ability to restore, or learn to restore then hey, you’re well on your way to being a god in the BIFL world. That’s how people in the old world did things. They just repaired and maintained as needed.

  Wool, cotton, silk, cashmere, alpaca. Natural fibers constructed well. I would focus only on classic brands I love that hold up forever: Pendleton, LL Bean, Orvis, Duluth, Barbour, Levis, Ralph Lauren, Max Mara, St. John, Lafayette 148, some Brooks Brothers, vintage Armani. I would thrift more. I would buy more classic basics. Wish I would have known about fabrics and good construction in my 20s.

  I’m actually in the process of this right now. I donated nearly my entire wardrobe last month.  To replace it I’ve bought 7 pairs of darn tough socks. 100% wool, made in Vermont.  10 pair of Duluth Buck Naked Underwear. Next I’m going to get 7 American made short sleeve T shirts with no logo. Probably black, olive green, and grey.  and a couple American made flannels.  My jacket and boots are also 100% American made.  My whole idea was to minimize decision making, own as few clothes as necessary, and to not contribute to slave labor.  I hear all these people talk about saving the planet that are constantly wearing the newest fast fashion. I challenge more people to put their money where their mouth is.

  Looking for a winter coat

  Stormy Kromer makes a couple of great coats. They aren't parkas, but are great for being outside. They are pricey but have a life time warranty and they do have sales on a pretty regular bases. I've had one for the last 4 winters and love it. Duluth has their Whaleback coats on sale right now, I just got one and it seems like a solid heavier winter coat, waterproof with a hood.

  I have some Duluth T shirts that are maybe eight or ten years old and have been in heavy rotation. You can tell they're old but physically they're holding together really well. Nips and nicks along the edges on some of them, faded dye on most, but still solid. The ones that are past that are gym shirts now.

  You could maybe try the Patagonia denim - they are sturdy with a warranty and make a short version although they still may need to be hemmed. Also a lot of the barn staff where I volunteer do wear the Duluth in the summer.

  Big fan of Duluth. The elastic is very good. Materials are nice. Design is good. They do lots of fun patterns (obviously not important but it's nice on top of hitting all the important marks), and the sales are crazy (got fun discontinued patterns at $6/pair for what's normally $25)

  Levi's jeans failed after 2 years - what are the best hard wearing jeans that will last longer?

  I noticed 20+ years ago Levi starting to use nylon/spandex/plastic in their jeans when they broke within the first year (mostly in the same place as yours). I miss their 567s. 501s but boot cut. And 100% cotton. I still wear their 501s that are 100% cotton and I have some that are 15 years old. Well worn but still solid. But 501s have become my "going out" pants when it's casual. Today my work pants are Duluth. The 100% cotton ones. Their cotton blends break just like Levi's poly blends - that break just like Carhartt polys, etc. I'm rough on my cloths as my work is rough - if you're looking for more "designer" denim, Japan makes some quality shit. And a few American brands are about on par with them. But I can't bring myself to spend over $80 on work pants. Duluth is my go-to right now as it's decent quality and they really do live up to their warranty.

  Pants with crotch gussets also last longer since the extra panel takes the strain better. Duluth's ballroom jeans and fire hose jeans seem to be pretty good quality. A friend of mine just bought Huxtly Jeans, which also have a gusset. I agree with all of the comments on 100% cotton, though.

  The Duluth fire hose pants (not the stretchy ballroom kind) are still good. And their free swinging shirts work well. Their long tail tees still hold up. Just be sure to create an account online so you have record of what you bought and when.   Also might have to size down, my Duluth shirts are labeled a size smaller than every other t-shirt in my closet and they're still a little looser than my preference. (And mine are "standard fit" because that's what was on the clearance sale. Slim fit might be able to get away with my regular size) Keep an eye out for end of season clearance sales, I imagine there will be good deals on summer clothes in the next few months. They're also really good about taking returns and exchanges, and I've gotten store credit when something went on sale a day or two after I bought it.

  I agree with you. I have 4 different pairs of long underwear, depending on what I am doing. I live in the US close to the Canada border, so we get all four seasons and lots of snow. Not to say it's cold all year, it is currently 88°F and 81% Humidity. But I also travel to North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, and Texas often. I purchased a few different styles from Duluth, and we'll see how they go!

  I am a huge fan of the Duluth long tail T's but might I suggest an undershirt instead - if you are able to find a good undershirt it will allow you to style the overshirt however you like and give you some versatility that being said the undershirt will untimely become a consumable but are usually cheaper than a higher quality overshirt... finding the undershirt become the problem though, start with natural fibers like cotton or wool - cotton absorbs moisture. wool moves it & the synthetics tend to trap it

  I got a Duluth whaleback parka a couple years ago and it is impervious to midwestern cold. It still surprises me when I walk outside and my breath is taken away from the cold on my face but my torso and arms feel like I’m still in a normal warm room. It’s not bulky and it’s waterproof and it is longer than a normal coat that stops at the waist.

  Anyone know any good overalls?

  I have a handful of the gardening overalls both in shorts and full length and been very happy. I also wear any of the dry on the fly stuff in the heat!   Does culprit underwear last?

  I got a couple of pairs of culprit over a year ago on a big sale, and so far they've lasted me just fine. I like the feel of them, very comfortable. I wear them for general/day use, not for working out or running or anything. For reference, i also wear Duluth Buck Nakeds and am perfectly comfortable in either pair. The men's culprits run long in my opinion. I had to get the trunks to get a "standard" length boxer brief, as the normal boxer briefs are the length of other brands "long" sizes. However, i do work an indoor office/lab job, so while i'm up and around a good portion of the day, i'm not getting hot and sweaty, so i cant speak to how well they'd hold up in those circumstances.

  I'm fat and sweaty with an outdoor job in Texas that involves lots of hiking. I've been wearing Duluth Armachillo boxer briefs for a few years without needing to replace any. I also have long femurs, so I wear the xtralong length, which many people seem not to like. I used to wear one of the sportswear brands (Champion or similar) compression undies and they were great and less expensive than Duluth, but they got discontinued as most great things do. Duluth is always having sales, which is the only time I buy these undies. They're pretty damn expensive when not on sale. My general rule of thumb is that if Facebook spams me with ads for something I haven't heard of and don't see elsewhere outside of social media, then it'll likely be shit. Culprit strikes me as that.

  Work is paying for me to get snakeproof/waterproof boots, what wont immediately fall apart?

  TLDR: LaCrosse Grange and Rattler brand snake gaiters for water/muck less than 18 inches deep. Probably looking at US$180 for the combo. No boots will be waterproof if it's deeper than that. Then you use waders unless it's hot. If it's hot it's better to just wear synthetic blend (quicker drying, non-cotton) pants, merino wool socks, and non-waterproof boots you don't mind messing up. Longform for anyone who may be in the same situation, or looking for more long-term solutions: For almost 20 years I have worked year-round in Texas swamp, desert, rocky slope, Piney woods, and everything in-between, kicking a shovel the whole time. I wear a combination of boots and snake gaiters. My gaiters are Rattler brand, and I'm usually wearing them just for thorny brush or vines. I don't wear them when it gets above 95° F. I only ever wear two types of boots: Zamberlans (really expensive) and La Crosse Grange 18 ($100). I can hike all day in either, and both are waterproof; Zamberlans are Gore-tex and breathable and LaCrosse are rubber and NOT breathable. Zamberlans are about as BIFL as waterproof work-hiking boots can get. I'm on about 3.5 years on my current pair and they're still waterproof and bombproof as they were day 1. Similar quality brands are Alico, Meindl, La Sportiva, Danner, and Lowa. Asolo may fit in there somewhere, but they've fallen apart on me before. The LaCrosse are gonna be like 1/4 the price of the Zamberlans, but they're just rubber boots with a shank (this is VERY important to have in whatever boot you get). They'll last a good long while and are super comfortable for rubber boots, but eventually their tread wears down, they get holes, and the material will break down, probably after a year of frequent use. If you're gonna be in legitimate swamp, where it's over 18-inch deep water, then snake gaiters and waterproof boots ain't gonna do shit for you anyway. They'll just weigh you down, which is more dangerous than snakebites. If you're in hot weather, I don't recommend thigh, hip, or chest waders, either. It's a recipe for heat stroke, which is also far more common and far more frequently deadly than snakebites. Better to just wear all quick-dry clothing (I wear Duluth Flex Firehose if vegetation is thick...otherwise I wear Wrangler ATG quick-dry pants) and boots that you won't mind messing up each day. To help take care of your feet, wear merino wool socks. Any merino wool blend will be better than cotton. They'll be more important than your boots if you'll be wet all day.

  Actually Durable Clothing

  A year of walking will wear out the soles of any normal boot with rubber outsoles. Metal would last longer, like horseshoes, but that has other issues (weight, low friction, damage to what you walk on). So shoes for humans are typically foam or rubber. Anyone saying their boots last more than a year with original soles is probably not wearing them much (or is just very light). Boots that last long can be resoled. There is a ton of information and misinformation about this topic. My suggestion is Jim Green footwear, by far the best on the market considering their quality and cost and also ethics as a company. Best US-made option generally are Thorogoods. For clothing, as noted - washing and drying makes a big impact. Duluth and Carhartt are certainly decent - there are more durable options but these should last a while if your washing and drying is fine.

But this other pair is still going strong.   Underwhelming 1620 Pants

  I have lost 30lbs since this post and can now where the pants with lots of room and way more comfortable but they still all 100% fit different. It just doesn’t make much sense. I think their quality control is lacking for the price point of their pants. I’m now wearing them in rotation with my Duluth Firehose pants just out of pure pity at the price that I paid for them. The material is very tough though. I give them that.

  I've been wearing their Ballroom Double Flex and DuluthFlex men's jeans (as a similarly curvy woman) for years and while they're incredibly comfortable, the thighs start to wear thin in less than a year, and all the pairs that I have that are over two years old I've had to patch multiple times. Their non-jean pants might last better, since their denim is stretch denim, but since OP is looking for jeans I really don't consider Duluth BIFL (or even Buy It For Long) in that department.

  I wore two pairs of caterpillar jeans with extra layers of material that I got from big lots for $8 for quite a few years without having a problem like that. With most clothing I would rip the hell out of the inside of the thigh especially while riding my bicycle. Also check out Duluth. I think specifically they're called ballroom jeans. They definitely have extra room for your balls.

  Duluth, Schmidt, and Duxbak all make canvas barn coats in that style. I prefer Duluth and Schmidt because the canvas is softer, and 2nd hand prices are much, much better than Carhartt. Canvas by itself is not warm. You'll want to look for one with a wool liner if you want warm.

  I’ve started leaning heavily on thrift stores for clothing, almost everything was objectively more well-made before it all went horribly wrong. Lately I have been buying some clothes from Duluth, especially flannel, outerwear, and other clothing for working outside. If Gap ever goes under I have no idea where I’ll buy jeans from, they were always the one company that made jeans that fit my figure. They didn’t leave a dreaded gap between my lower back and the clothing itself. More than anything, properly washing and drying your clothing will make it last longer. Look up EstateSales.net, local garage sales, and furniture consignment shops for home decor that will last, and has personality. My advice on decor is, “Collect, don’t decorate.”

They have held up like champs. I have like 4 pairs or so that I rotate and they show no signs of wearing out. You can do it yourself by simply buying high quality materials (full grain leather, military nylon) with instructions from [Art of Manliness](http://www.artofmanliness.com/2012/11/30/how-to-make-a-wallet/) for <$40. If you are super-excited about that ring (which is really a bad thing to me, personally), why not just make it yourself or contact a leatherworker. Wallets are not $500 complicated.
