What did your toddler actually play with (and not just sit there looking cute)?
I think the main thing is they love something to build with, anything, could be blocks, legos, duplo, whatever, just pick one and then some toys that are the characters living inside whatever it is that has been build. That way the play just keeps going.

What’s one gift you’d recommend for a 1–4-year-old that isn’t just a toy.. something hands-on, keeps them focused, and helps them explore creativity while learning?
Based on my preschool students: Duplo (if durable plastic is OK), Playmobil 1-2-3 (also durable plastic), wooden building blocks, wooden doll houses (the one in our classroom is from Lakeshore Learning but I’ve also seen consumer versions) All of these are open ended, great for imaginative play, durable and will at least somewhat grow with the kid

The best longevity with toys is non-electronic stuff usually. As for learning, many seemingly simple toys can be amazing for learning since they allow for imaginative play. I’m thinking something like a small soft toy that a toddler can enjoy cuddling, but might later be a character in a game for an older child and then a treasured collectible for a teen/adult. Maileg makes good toys for this, although I recently bought a rugaroo toy for Christmas for my 4 year old and I think they are just as nice. If you are thinking less open-ended than that, I think a mini piano would be awesome for the things you’ve mentioned. I also think building toys like duplo would be great.
