  I bought the Dyson SV25 stick and I love it. It's easy to use and picks up everything on my bare floors and lite weight carpet. I got it at Sam's for around $300 - to last me. It also runs about 40 mins before needing a charge. Attachments are easy to use.

  How can a company continue to make money if their product lasts forever?

  The company should be based on an innovative mindset, not a specific product. That’s one reason why private equity destroys companies. It never capitalizes on the human capital. Good companies can use the revenue from one product to fund creation of the next. I am not a big fan of ninja brand products-but they are really good at innovation. Same with Dyson. Festool and Patagonia are good examples of combining quality and innovation

  My Dyson vacuum just turned 9 years old. My dog sheds a lot, and I've got two cats too. I vacuum a few rooms every weekend, and it still works like new. I'm amazed I haven't had to replace any parts yet, but I'm good about cleaning it. A couple years ago, I fucked up the factory lube around the beater brush when I accidentally vacuumed up some damp carpet soap (my fault, I didn't wait long enough for the carpet to completely dry). I let it dry out completely before using it again, but then the beater brush started squealing like hell. I opened it up, gave the bar some fresh silicone grease, and it's been happy ever since.

  Why household appliances are no longer built to last

  I think sometimes yes, sometimes no. Dyson vaccums very easy to replace. GE dumb dryers most parts are $50 or less and can be done within 1 hour. I think over the past 10 years a lot of manufactuers sold the general public what they were beta testing and we bought it. stick to dumb appliances, esp things that are mechanical and don't have a motherboard and you can keep things for longer than 10 years

  I bought a return Dyson battery vac. The original battery wasn't great, but it did the job. After 5 years, the battery was weak enough that we couldn't work around it. I bought a new (genuine) Dyson battery for it 1.5 years ago, and this battery is fantastic compared to the original. It does everything I need it to do, and hasn't run out of power on me yet.

  I'm one of those whose experience doesn't align with the hivemind- everyone in my family has a Dyson pet ball and most have at least 10 years on them. Mine is a refurb with 5 years. All of ours work exceptionally and do a wonderful job of sucking cat hair out of every nook and cranny. Sometimes the advice passed around here feels like the regurgitated experience of a handful of people mixed with a healthy dose of marketing. Ironically, Darn Tough actually lives up to the hype and some here are convinced their popularity is due to bots.

  Madewell for jeans. Ruffwear for dog stuff. Seconding Patagonia. Darn Tough and Smartwool. Dyson (I’ve dropped one of their fans and my dog ate the remote and they still function perfectly despite looking rough). And an honorable mention to Ruggable: their customer service is exceptional.

  I was coming here to comment about the dyson v12 cordless I just bought. My absolute favorite feature (besides it being cordless) is the laser on it, had no idea you could just buy a laser attachment.. that’s awesome. I vacuum like 3x a day or more now since I got my dyson. The laser just makes it something that you look forward to and is fun. Insane how much accumulates on the floor even in a few hours.

  Our robot vacuum. I got it back in July (roborock) and it's been great. I only have to spot clean once or twice a week with our dyson. Another close second is Comma AI (third party add on for my car that adds lane assist to my Prius. ) it has made a huge difference on long road trips.

  - Mauvel Copper cooking pots, stock pot. Pricey at Williams Sonoma but they will last hundreds of years. - Dyson chordless vacuum (get the extender) these are excellent spider killers. Will never live without. - Fiestaware plates. They just don’t break like other brands. - Mexican wool blankets, these are incredible and will last decades and decades. We have several we keep outdoors, they are sturdy and hold up to bad weather! Take them camping, beach, picnic. They are so bright and pretty.

  My Dyson often clogs right at the J bend between the brush and collection tank, but it's easy to take it apart without tools and fish out the blockage. I bought a spare pair of filters and clean them both monthly and the thing still works like new ten years on. Whenever it stops working, it's invariably because someone sucked up a Lego or bit of twig and the pet hair just piled up around it until the motor heated up too much and switched itself off.

  I feel like my Dyson is from before the company started building towards obsolescence. I was gifted mine in 2014 and it was probably manufactured even earlier. I've had to repair two small plastic parts, clean it once or twice a year, and it's run like a dream. I'd rather have a vacuum that i actually use but have to replace every five years over a vacuum that's so big and clunky that it stays in the closet 100% of the time, but at least I'll never have to buy a new one.   My dyson bagless is 15 yrs old and hasn't missed a beat. Dogs, cats, foster pets with long and short hair... Whole 9 yards. Maybe they got worse later, but the 2010 era version, tank. Bought one for my SOs mom in 2012. We've replaced the hose. Also runs perfectly still.

  We have both a Dyson and a Miele . Had the Miele coming up to 10 years now , it’s still going strong . But it does get tangled a lot. We have three cats , 2 of whom are long haired shedders. The Dyson was a bit of a game changer for the little tufts of fur they leave after they’ve been playing/mauling each other. It’s light and portable and easy to use for both me and my arthritic mother. The Miele is a big heavy stick vacuum that needs to be plugged in. The Dyson is a convenient light battery operated thing. It also helps give my mum agency and allow her to keep doing things. She never used the Miele in 10 years whereas now she uses to Dyson nearly every day. Both struggle with long cat hair , but the Miele moreso that needs to be cut free every few weeks with a razor. The Dyson tends to clog under the roller where it spins up. I think that’s just an expected thing when you have lots of carpets and lots of pets

  What long-lasting cleaning appliances are worth picking up?

  I love my robo vac, but imo you can't go cheap. I bought one for about $350 2 years ago and it was great for a year. Now it gets lost all the time and doesn't connect to the app anymore, so it's lost a lot of features. I still use it and it's 11/10. But when I purchase the next one, I plan to go for a brand name.   I got a factory reconditioned Dyson in 2012 and it will not die. I did have to replace the hose after 8 years. I did buy a Shark 3 years ago because the carpet is so deep in one room of the new house the Dyson couldn't handle it.

  I have a Dyson, but a while back I got a medium sized wet/dry shop vac from Home Depot with various attachments. It is truly fantastic, the filters are cheap and easily available, the suction is great, you can vacuum large objects, and if it ever breaks, it costs $100. I don't think there is much reason to ever get a big brand vacuum.

  I have a Dyson and a shark. I change out the filters and do a full cleaning of the vacuum every couple months. Maintenance matters. I just bought 6 pads and filters for my shark for $8. Makes a huge difference. I also have vacuflo central vac which uses a canister and vents to the outside. It is 25 years old and the suction is amazing.

  I don't get the Dyson hate at all. I love our Dyson, we've had it for over 5 years. Battery started crapping out last year so I replaced it for about $100 and it works like new again. We live in an apartment, if I had a large house I'd want a different vacuum, but this works great. Battery power is a huge game changer, and wall mount means we don't have to awkwardly dig it out of the closet all the time.

  I’ve had the same corded Dyson since around 2008 and I just recently replaced the cordless one, because the battery had degraded and with a sale it was like replace the battery for $120 or buy a newer model for $300. Batteries are often the limiting feature on cordless tools. There’s no way around it, so see what the options are for battery replacement. It looks like OPs specific model takes the other piece of longevity out of the equation with self cleaning filters.

  I know Miele is very popular here and understandably so based on its durability. But I'll offer my story. We replaced a broken Dyson with  Miele C1, used it for a few months, hated it awfully, resold it for half what we paid, and got another Dyson. The Dyson had better suction, WAY longer power cord, was more readily swapped between upright mode and hose/attachments mode multiple times per cleaning session, and it didn't swing around behind me like a little attack tank on what felt like a 2ft cord, constantly smacking into me or my furniture or rolling over onto its side. I think if we didn't have a split level home with many half-stairways I may have hated it less. Dyson has worse parts availability and is less durable, but our first one lasted us 15 years, and the second one is now neseing 5 years and works like new. Take it apart down to its components and clean it once in a while, and it will work perfectly for a long time.

  What will you primarily use it for? That changes my recommendation. Couches/light cleaning: Any decent handheld works (like Bissell, shark) Pet hair/heavy use: Look for something with >=500w, strong airflow and a tangle-resistant brush (Like Dyson V11/V15 series, Shark PowerDetect / Stratos) Mattresses: Specialized vacuum worth it (Jigoo J300 is good here) For long-term durability: Motor power matters most, but also look for washable/ replaceable HEPA filters, easy-to-service brush heads, and good heat management.

  What have you used the most at home these two years?

  We got a fellow coffee grinder (not the super expensive one, their mid-range one that is like $200) and at the time it seemed crazy to spend that to replace the 1970s spice grinder we had been using. We use it 2+ times a day every day, and it's so nice to use a nice piece of equipment, and it looks good too. I used to have a robot vaccum, but I found it so fussy to have to "pre clean" every time I ran it. Flip over the rug, pick up the dog toys, tidy the bedroom floor. And after all that, it still did kind of a half-ass job. I since got a Dyson with the green laser thing, and it's a miracle for dog hair on hard floors. I use it way more often than I ever ran the robo, because it's kind of fun to do.

  So I’ve tried a few over time and only the ones that double as an air duster + vacuum are actually practical. Cuz you can blow dust out of tight spaces and vacuum the tiny stuff without having to swap the attachments. This one for reference, also don't go for dyson n all, you'll only use em if your place is dusty af. A few tips: Check battery life and charge time. Dual filtration (HEPA + mesh) for allergies. for your car, make sure you get an extension hose or a narrow nozzle.

  I have a Shark that feels worse than the Dyson. Performance is fine, but it feels more fragile and has had more issues with the design itself having some major oversights.  I had a Dyson v10 that was ~8-9 years old that my ex took when she moved out. It was still running strong. I’d have preferred to keep that one.  I know there’s debate about what BIFL means, but Shark and Dyson are either both BIFL or they’re both not. They’re too similar in quality. For me, the 8+ years on the Dyson was pretty good. Maybe not BIFL, but it wasn’t done yet.

  Most people here will tell you to stay away from Dyson. Like everything else, everyone's experience is different. I have a Dyson Animal upright that's a decade old and still works like new. We've always had a stick vacuum for the convenience, but both Shark and Samsung models we had weren't even worth the convenience. We dropped the coin for a V15 and honestly it works even better than the upright. My only problem with the V15 is the battery is not removable, and of course anything with a battery is not going to be BIFL. But in my experience Dyson makes a great product. Bagged vacuums will definitely have better longevity odds but if I'm getting even 10 years out of a vacuum, that's good to me.

  So, I'm not sure where all of the Dyson gate is coming from, but I love ours. We bought it two years ago and it's still performing like it did on day one. Also: No annoying bags. No hoses that pinch you like an angry crab. (I hate you, Shark.) Super easy to clean filters, including the HEPA filter. It's also relatively light, easy to use/maneuver and is very multifunctional. I will say, however, that if you go cordless and have a space larger than 900 sq ft... you're going to need a second battery (unless they've improved on this over the years), or clean your space in shifts.

  I think think the V11 and above are where they start to be worthwhile. They aren't BIFL but they are really convenient for hardwood floors. As others have said you can get the battery adapters which extends the life . I will keep buying a new Dyson every 5 yrs or so just because it's so easy.

  The only problem with cordless Dyson is you have to replace the battery periodically since it gets really worn after a couple years, but outside of that nothing else degraded, just needed some cleaning. I think I have the v8 but if I were buying now I would just go with what ever is most current as long as the battery can still be replaced at home.  What I found personally and through reviews is the battery price is directly commensurate with battery strength and longevity, so you should go with the official battery. The cheapest batteries lie about their capacity and can die in a few months, while the more legit battery I found, and bought, which was priced right between the cheapest batteries and official one, ended up with a middle life span and power. Also, the official battery comes with a little installation manual so you don’t have search for instructions online and it comes with fresh screws and washers, which is very good because if you strip one of those screws taking it out you’ll turn your vacuum into trash. I think with cordless there are always some major trade offs you have to accept in comparison to corded vacuums. I hate having to deal with a cord so I accept the trade offs.

  I like my dyson V11 and V15, but they aren't exactly BIFL. While it might be technicaly possible to get some parts if something breaks, parts are often out of stock for months, and you might end up replacing most of the vacuum if what should be a minor part fails. E.g. most of the stick vas have a small plastic tab that keeps the dust bin attached when you're emptying it over a trash can. That tiny tab broke off of my V11, and the bin flys off if I'm not careful when emptying it. To "fix" the tab, you have to replace the whole "main body and cyclone" assembly, which is basically 90% of the vacuum and costs > $100. With that said, they do seem to pick up dirt pretty well in my experience on rugs and hardwoods, and they are light enough to easily maneuver and the battery lasts long enough to do our whole 1500 ft\^2 house. I also got mine refurbished so they were far less than retail price.

  I have had a V10 for 6 years now. I love it. It doesn't have the swappable batteries so that is a limiting factor. It works amazingly well otherwise. You are able to unscrew the battery and buy a Amazon battery and just swap them that way. They don't lock in place but the friction fit holds the battery in place. At this point the original battery doesn't last more than 5 minutes but the Amazon battery will last a while and only cost like $40.

  I found a couple of Dysons in the trash with a bad battery. Maybe a V6 and a V7. I replaced the battery on each with the ones from ifixit and they were fine. They have OK design from a usage viewpoint, but they all plasticky. Certain small failures can kill the machine due to inherent unrepairability and lack of parts support. So in summary, I can certainly recommend Dyson stick vacuums from the trash but I would never buy one new.

  [BIFL Request] Small apartment vacuum. Preferably able to hit carpet and bare floor, and be small, those are my only requirements.

  I forgot the password to this account and haven't been on it in years and I was looking back on old posts and it's funny cause I did end up getting the Dyson, and I actually didn't have any complaints, eventually the battery wore out and I got a replacement but it worked really well for my old apartment. That being said, my mom got a Miele, the most basic model and when I clean at her place I love using it. It has so much suction that if you crank it up to the highest setting she can't even pick it up off the carpet lol. She didn't realize it wouldn't come with a rolling brush type attachment and bought a non manufacturer one that spins using suction since there's no power at the end of the hose but I never feel the need to use it. Her apartment is 2 bedroom 1.5 bath with a balcony it's much roomier but the vacuum is great and when the time comes I will probably go Miele.

  Quality blender is up there for me too, I am a Blendtec guy but Blendec or Vitamix, either way, if you use a blender regularly it makes a huge difference. I also have the Dyson hair dryer, I got a deal on one of the refurbished models with a coupon, seemed like a ridiculous purchase but that thing is really good. Doubly ridiculous because I really only have a beard to blowdry but a damp neck is not a good thing if you didn't know. Since you mentioned Dyson - Their vacuums are pretty good but in the end I'm not a huge fan, I think bagless is inferior, but a great vacuum is a real convenience, not a fun one but it makes life easier. I recently bought a Sebo D4 and that thing is next-level. Zojirush water boiler/dispenser. I like electric kettles but in the USA with our 120VAC they're slow. The Zojirushi dispensers will hold water at 208º and they last forever. Older models had gaskets that required occasional replacement but they sell the parts, my current one with the double-wall design has been on pretty much for ten years straight except when I unplug it to go on vacation. Great convenience appliance for coffee and tea lovers, especially for someone who does a French press every morning. Great kitchen tools, knives, cookware, utensils. They're all just hunks of metal in the end so anything good quality is buy it for life. Apple electronics, although laptops, phones, etc. can't really be BIFL. Porsche car - Not necessarily the cheapest to keep for life but they claim 70% of the cars they've made are still on the road. Not brand-specific but decent home audio, especially a 5.1 or better surround setup for movie and TV. Even YouTube documentaries sound so much better, you get spoiled by great audio, I find even narration lacks impact and presence when I'm listening to a podcast through earbuds vs. watching on my surround system. And while audiophilia gets people spending ridiculous amounts of money with the proliferation of cheap consumer electronics the last few decades you don't have to spend much to get a way better experience. Bicycle stuff, but not really brand specific and I don't go as crazy as a lot of enthusiasts, but don't mind spending on good bikes, good gear and good accessories. Ekornes Stressless furniture - very comfortable to me, IMO even most expensive furniture isn't really comfortable or ergonomic, a lot of it is plush, superficially comfortable but not supportive and wrecks your neck and back if you spend a lot of time in it. Similarly, Herman Miller Aerons for office duty. Travelpro luggage - most of their lines aren't expensive enough to be a real splurge, but very nice and durable, way better than cheap luggage some of which seems to be single-use these days.

  Mine, the suction gets bad when the attachment rollers get wrapped in hair or the canister is full. Still has strong suction after 5 years or so and it was a refurb one. I leave it on max suction permanently though. And I do change the filters...sometimes. Battery life kinda going...but the replacement is expensive. Stronger suction than my Mom's Tineco by far also. And I have used other people's Dyson's that were definitely broken or clogged and the suction was bad. Don't know what happened to theirs. No issues personally with mine. I have a small apartment so the canister size and battery is fine for me. Also the mini motorized brush is surprisingly powerful.

  Just to leave my experience, I bought a $250ish Tineco a few years ago (A11 Hero iirc) after everyone told me it was better than Dyson for cheaper. It was fine. I recently got a Dyson V11 at goodwill for crazy cheap since it needed a repair, fixed it in an hour. It's not comparable. At all. Not even remotely. The Dyson is so, so much better. Suction is INSANE, it gets my floors so much cleaner, the brush roll doesn't get a single hair on it, and the dirt chamber doesn't clog up like the Tineco did. Obviously Dyson is much more expensive but if you want BIFL, that's the closest you're gonna get... But no battery powered vacuum is BIFL.

The Dyson V15 is amazing for quick daily cleanups, especially with the laser that shows hidden dust (we have hardwood + rugs). The Miele C3 Calima is quieter and better for deep cleaning hard floors, but struggles a bit on plush carpets. I keep the Dyson upstairs and the Miele for bigger weekend cleans.

  Yeah, we replaced the Dyson DC14 with a Sebo (the one at the top of this list, actually) because they were running a sale for their anniversary (the local sew/vac place, that is), they offered a trade-in even though they couldn't fix my old vacuum and my husband offered them cash in hand on the spot, so we got a pretty hefty discount on it (did not pay $1400 for sure). They also gave a 10 year warranty at their shop for free repairs on it. I wish my vacuum had made it to 20 years.. but it certainly did better (with only one belt repair) in the time we had it, which I guess is better than most people's experience.

  I agree with this list. I have a V15 detect and it is what I use 95% of the time. It is just so convenient to grab it off the charger and be cleaning up a mess 1 second later. However, I bought it expecting it to last 10 years, probably with a battery replacement along the way. If I were to own only 1 vacuum, the Miele cat&dog is what I would have bought based on reviews. Call me lazy, but I bet my house would be less clean if that was my only vacuum. Dragging it out, dealing with the hose and cord, getting an extension cord or moving the car if I want to use it outside are all small but annoying barriers to quick cleans. I can take my Dyson off the charger, suck up a little spill, even step outside and empty it into the trash by the time I'd have a corded vacuum ready to go. If you live in a small house or apartment, the battery Dysons can be your only vacuum, but I think for larger homes you still want a corded machine. For what it is worth, my other vacuum is a DC24 from 2004ish, and while I didn't expect it to last all that long either, it still works good as new. I replaced the hose once about 10 years ago after I tore it. I like how modular it is so it can be taken all apart and cleaned and parts can be replaced like Legos.

  Companies with reliable “right to repair” products: can we compile a list?

  I've got one of those Dyson Ball vacuums I got at a thrift store, everything on it is totally repairable at least in that generation. I don't buy things like that new, so I wouldn't know how their current gen products are, but if you're looking for a solid BIFL vacuum, I'd say that my little $30 thrift store Dyson is as good as you can get without upgrading to a wet/dry vac for home use.

  Probably fair to also give consideration to how you use it too. I’ve had a Dyson (V8 I think) for several years with no issues. That said, I use it lightly because I have house cleaners come every other week so I’m not thoroughly vacuuming the whole house with it regularly. And I don’t expect a lightweight battery powered anything to last forever. If I wanted a tank for heavier use I’d buy the Miele everyone loves or something comparable. For what it is, the Dyson is very good.

  I just don’t get the Miele. We inherited one. Yes powerful yes reliable but honestly an absolute pig of a thing to pull out lug about and use. We got a Dyson V8 5 years ago that we use everyday. Pure ease and simplicity and powerful enough which a nice rage of attachments. The Miele never got used again after getting the Dyson so we got rid of it.

  My parents lost me borrow a oreck bag Vacuum that's been in our family as, long as I can remember when I bought my house. A couple years ago I found a Dyson dc14 at a yard says for $20, replaced the clutch and it "worked" but never well, but I just properly cleaned the rollers of all the hair again, unclogged the small hose from the shroud to the ret of the unit, and it's sucking like a dream now. I've never pulled this much dust out of my rugs in my life and now I want to puke. Anyway, moral of the story is use what you have, and fix what breaks. Searching for used Dyson is a great option.

  I did an extensive amount of research looking for a good new vacuum. I explicitly wanted a cordless one and reddit could not *fathom* that I didn't want to plug it in in every room. It made my research surprisingly difficult. I wound up scoring a Dyson V12 Absolute on Goodwill.com for $80 with a broken trigger which I replaced for $10. It's incredible and I absolutely love it. It DESTROYS the other cordless vacuums I've used. Would a high end corded vacuum deep-clean my rugs better? Sure probably. But I'd never use it. My Dyson is convenient, easy, and super powerful. I can't recommend it enough.

On one hand its does really well especially for the weight and for a cordless and has actually useful features like the laser detection. But on the other hand its more susceptible to breaking / battery degrading and is less repairable. And its not cheap. So yeah it'll get raves, but also disses when it breaks.

  A fan that makes great white noise

  As someone who has slept with a fan next to my head since I can remember, no one can answer this for you unfortunately. The pitch of the noise will be different for everyone and movement of air will be personal preference. When my last fan died (12" Hawaiian breeze lasted damn near a decade), I researched for weeks and weeks, buying and trying/returning dozens of fans to find that right noise. I am currently a few years into using a 12" comfort zone fan on my night stand. I have five fans in the cut in case this one goes out and I start the process again. For example, I kept a vornado air circulating fan as backup, but it just didn't sound right to me. In my 36 years, I've gone through about 4 staple fans. In my experience, I can tell you that any standard 12" desk fan or something like a Honeywell turbo will probably get you a good five years minimum. I have never tried a Dyson, but you can sometimes see them on display at a best buy to get an idea of you would like to spend that money. A standard box fan also gives a very deep and strong white noise. I can go on for hours about this shit.

  Our Bissel Spotclean Pet Plus machine. We have two BC-mix pups who have sensitive stomachs and I am also very prone to spilling wine. That machine makes all those stains disappear without much effort and you’d never know anything was there in the first place. Love it. It was €199. Oh and our Dyson combination air filter and air conditioning unit! We love this thing and it works so well! Our house doesn’t smell like we have two dogs and all the cooking smells go away quickly too. It’s fabulous. It was €500.

  Dyson vacuums. I have a golden and anyone who has ever vacuumed after a golden will know how quickly it will die. Dysons are good because they can be pulled apart very easily to remove blockages or to replace specific parts. I’ve had the same one for almost a decade. I’ve had to unclog it dozens of times but it’s almost relaxing with how easy it is. Makes me feel like I’m fixing up a gun.

  Aw I love my Dyson too but all my plastics have broken 🫤. It's got more clear JB weld holding it together than original plastic but it still outcleans any other vacuum I've tried to replace it with! Plus I really like the sound it makes during use, and it makes such nice vacuum lines. And it really pulls from the edges of the carpet right against the wall. Mines the DC65... I love that I can completely take every piece apart and sanitize it if needed. Well, used to be able to anyway, lol.

  We have a Cuisinart double Belgian waffle maker that we got at a yard sale for $30 back in 2010. It’s been a favorite and always a standby for breakfast. We had 2 of us then, now a 5 person family and that double function is amazing. I think small appliances sometimes have a tendency to move around if they’re reliable enough and a good unlock.   Do smart home items really work in long term?

  I’ve had a house full of Homepods driving Philips Hue lights, sensors and smart plugs for 6 years, also homekit cameras and doorbell. None of the hardware has had a problem, nothing has broken at all. All the basic functions have been 100% reliable. I’ve sent all kinds of elaborate automations there has been some difficulty making my madcap plan work as expected but half of the time I had to learn something before I could get it to work as expected. Some more advanced functions have been a bit buggy. However, overall, it has been an extremely good experience. I have a lot of rooms where if it’s dark and I walk into the room the lights just come on. I’ve got a lot of scenes where I can do things like except the TV room up for watching, that one will set the lights correctly, turn the TV on, set the room temperature on a Dyson heater and load the app on the Apple TV for my media server. So I just say ‘siri sofa time’ I’m by the time I arrive in the room (often carrying my dinner), everything is ready to go. Another favourite is I’ve got a smart plug linked up to an electric blanket in my bed and it preheats the bed for me every night and turns on the projector in my bedroom and sets a few ambient lights on low when I enter the room at night so I can watch something before sleep (usually David Attenborough wildlife documentsries). It’s adding a lot of convenience and I doubt regret investing in it.

  Look for true HEPA filtration, and formaldehyde filtration. Dyson TP09 or HP09 are amazing, as is their BEAST the new Big+Quiet Formaldehyde purifier. These are very well made and designed purifiers with a true commitment to air quality. Some of these purifiers end up making things worse.

  I'm on the Makita train. Here's a tip. You can buy an adaptor for the Dyson V8 vacuum that accepts 18V Makita (or other brands) batteries making it a nearly BIFL Vacuum.

  Duct tape, basic tool set (screwdrivers, hammer, nails, etc.) wd40 (so many uses, help to loosen things, address creaky hinges, etc.), plunger, and a bucket (catch leaks, carry soil, flush toilet if power out etc.) I invested in a dyson vacuum year ago, and it's been great. You can also buy and replace parts on their site, so I feel like it was truly worth saving up. I also LOVE my hepa air purifier. It personally helps with my allergies so much, but also, if you're near wildfires, or have a dusty prone room, I would highly highly consider one. Also I'm a bidet convert, I got a basic $40 one, and my TP consumption is down and it's so game changing!

  Buy a high quality vacuum for cat box area. We got a Dyson handheld one and it has lasted a very long time. High quality sheets and towels can last a really long time if you take care of them. Garnet Hill has some good towels. Just avoid Target/TJ Max/Home Goods. Those products just fall apart or fade so easily. Get referrals for a cleaning person to do a deep clean every once in a while. I was always too frugal to pay someone but I was also total shit at cleaning a bathtub. Soap scum is hard AF to remove from shower doors/grout and ovens are disgusting. A good cleaning person can handle all that for like $100. Do that a few times a year and it makes cleaning in between so much easier.

  Someone got us a Dyson as an engagement gift maybe 8 years ago? I’ve never been anything but let down by it.   BIFL Request: vacuum

  I have a Dyson I got off of woot! in like 2011. It's been a beast. It's one of the 'All Floors' models. I have replaced a couple of the hoses over the years (after first dealing with them ducktaped together...), but otherwise, it's been great. Maybe cost me $30 in a couple of hoses. All have filters. 2 of them have been running almost 24/7 for about 6 years. 1 of them has ran probably 40 hours a week for about 5 years. The last (newer one) I use probably 8-10 hours per day 3-5 days per week, and have been doing so for 3+ years. I also have an old school Dyson animal ball vacuum that I bought in 2010. I gave it to my son a few years ago for his first apt and it still works great. All of them work great and they are amazing fans if you maintain them and change the filters.

My mom is still using the Dyson we used all throughout my childhood and it’s still going strong - I’m 32 and don’t even remember time before that Dyson.   We have the Miele Blizzard CX1 Electro Bagless, which does a great job on a home with an always-shedding Pug who has a Corgi as a bestie who comes for play dates. Love the bagless! After many years with my old Miele, this was a great upgrade! We also have a Dyson V11 hanging on the charger in the kitchen for quick pickups that does a great job hitting the wood floors, low-pile rugs and upholstery (with attachments) that’s really effective, too.

  I have a Dyson cordless Animal and it’s perfect for me. I also have a really nice almost new Kirby ($800+ price tag) I picked up for $10 at a garage sale because the people didn’t understand you could replace the belts for a couple dollars. I use the Dyson all the time because it’s so much easier and less mental commitment for my ADHD brain to pick up and use a cordless vacuum whenever I need it. I can vacuum for three seconds and put it back before I get distracted. Easily worth the money because now I actually vacuum as opposed to getting stressed out about the whole process of plugging in, lifting, storing the giant Kirby and not vacuuming at all in the end.

  Which, in my opinion, Dysons are. The batteries can be replaced, or modded to accept tool batteries, they do not require filters, they’re easily repairable, and they’re incredibly convenient to use, which encourages regular vacuuming, leading to a cleaner home. People talk a lot about socks here, and those don’t last five years. Dysons are solid for at least a decade. Our Meile is pushing 20, but my mom has probably spent thousands on bags, and she’s had to repair the elbow mechanism more than once. I think it’s more than appropriate to discuss quality items here, even if they won’t last two generations. If we only talked about things that lasted that long, our sub would be full of hand tools and leather goods. I think it’s pretty widely accepted here that this sub has evolved into a sub where we seek out the highest quality entries for any product category.

  Seem's about right. Though it's funny to see a cordless vac from Dyson in second place. It's so good that BIFL isn't enough of a motivating factor to not buy it. God does the competition suck in comparison.. The only problem with Dyson today (as well as Zojirushi.. the pieces of shit...) is they're purposefully gutting customer service, and the most important spare parts are not being offered practically speaking (honestly I think there is grounds for a class action on this latter portion).

  YMMV, but I have had a Dyson Animal, the non-upright one... since 2009. Its still kicking and we have had a smaller sheddy dog, and now two larger less sheddy dogs (pit bulls). It still works great. It. looks like the upright version is #12 on this list. I don't think that was even available when we bought ours, but either way I think Dyson can be good. I personally prefer the canister too. No worrying about having to mess around with bags or find replacement ones.

  I have had the Dyson V8 Animal for over 5 years and I love it. I replaced the battery with an aftermarket one when the original’s battery life went way down. Works like brand new again. That said, I won’t buy a new Dyson again unless something major changes with the company. It seems their customer service has completely tanked in the past couple years. If I’m paying a premium for a product then I need to know I can communicate with the company and get support if I have any issues with it.

  some areas of WDW resort custodial use the Dyson V15's and I gotta be honest, theyre the only ones that have lasted months instead of mere days like other brands. They are worked HAAAARD and they still work great.   I had many vacuums in decades. Older vacuums were better built than modern vacuums on average. My mother still uses a vacuum bought in the 90s' and it's great. But it has a bag that I hate as you will 100% be covered in dust trying to clean it. I tried different vacuums and eventually ended up with V15 Dyson and I will mirror some others. It's awesome. It collects dog fur really well, you can see dust on the floor as you use it. I have 2 accumulators for it, but 1 is typically enough as we mainly have hardwood. It works very well with both carpets and sofas (I compared with my older corded vacuum that has crazy suction power). And I do understand that cordless has a downside of accumulators eventually dying out, but not having to carry the god damn cord and base around is something I prefer to live without.

  Yes, many in google. You remove 2-3 screws pull out the battery, and swap in a cradle for the power tool batteries and then replace the screws. Maybe 5 minutes total. Changing the batteries on Dyson handhelds are just ridiculously easy and anyone who harps about them Not being bifl because it has a battery is just misinformed. Almost all of their parts can be easily sourced, and if not plenty of vacuum shops (around me) service them.

  I’m sorry, the cordless Dyson isn’t that great for carpet/rugs so I wouldn’t rank it that high. The attachments are excellent for their specific uses like couch/mattress, the nozzle for corners but I have the old school Dyson Ball vacuum cleaner and it’s sooo much better for rugs.   It's very lightweight and extremely powerful for its size with good run time. We live in a large old house with 3 kids and a pet. I have a 15 year old Miele which is fantastic, but I'll be damned if I'm going to drag that thing up and down three floors regularly. Our Dyson V6 is 8+ years old and still going strong. It does 90% of the vacuuming because it can be easily picked up to spot clean a specific area and does a good job of it. Yes, it requires a bit more maintenance (cleaning) than the Miele, but it also doesn't require bags that are several dollars each, and again, most importantly, makes vacuuming a LOT easier.

  Yes, being cordless and effective for what I need. They have HEPA filters, at least mine does. The no bag is a feature for some of us not a defect. It's all a tradeoff. For some the tradeoff for cordless, no bags, good suction, etal means we vacuum more than we otherwise would. I dont make a mess emptying it vs making a mess swapping bags - cause I overfill it. That's a me thing but it's a consistent me thing and I dont have to worry about it with the Dyson. I never would have thought I'd defend a near $1,000 cordless vacuum but I got one as a gift and will never buy anything different now.

  Just search eBay or Amazon or whatever for “dyson v8 battery adapter dewalt” or whichever vacuum and brand of power tool you have. The basic idea of how it works is in the listing, but it’s dead easy to take out the old battery and put in the adapter. Three screws, that’s it.

  I know this topic comes up often and it's always said that a cordless vacuum isn't BIFL. But damn if the Dyson V15 isn't life changing for me. I actually *like* vacuuming now. Lugging the cannister and cord around of my old vacuum room to room was such a chore. It's just so much easier and I like their little gimmick of showing how much dirt it's captured. Granted I've never tried a Miele before, but I only have hardwood floors and a few spot rugs so I don't think I'd never the extra power or whatever else advantages it brings. Especially at the expense of lugging the cannister around with me.

  after years of researching, i finally settled on a Dyson V15 for our 1000sf wood floor home. we’ve got cats and lots of rugs, so just needed something for easy rug cleaning once a month or so. though the wood floor attachment has been a game-changer, and the laser “Detect” light honestly makes vacuuming *fun,* being able to see the stark difference after making a pass on the floor. yes, batteries will die. (we only use it on the Auto mode) yes, the plastic feels like it’s going to break. but beside the limited sf / use, i finally settled on a cordless Dyson because that is their area of expertise. they have been making cordless sticks for 15 years, with a huge community of users who have figured out how to keep them alive and working (like battery adapters, so i can use the batteries from my power tool system), not to mention Dyson selling parts and replacements. i looked at Miele for a while, but they only introduced a cordless stick in 2020! yes, there is no beating a corded, bagged vacuum in most all measurements. but that would be *way* too much machine for our needs. as is discussed here often, understanding your own use case is primary. everyone doesn’t need *the best,* they need the best for their circumstance.

I destroyed my last one in a flour incident (I could probably clean it and still use it, but the cleanup process already took several weeks. Yes, several WEEKS!!!) and it was easier on my mental health to buy a new one. My first Dyson lasted 15 years before needing replaced.

  Recommendations on Cordless Vacuum

  Disagree, I've had a Dyson V12 for a few years now and have found it excellent as a primary vacuum. Had the V7 for a couple of years before that and whilst not as good as a V12 it sufficed as a primary vacuum. I've got a top of the range Karcher as a wet/dry wokshop vacuum for things that you'd never use a household Miele for, and I don't think I've ever found the need to use it because the V12 didn't cut it in the house. Not saying you're wrong, experiences and opinions differ, but I have the option of a super powerful corded vacuum, and I only use the V12 in the house.

  After 50 years of dedicated service, our Electrolux Super J has breathed its last.

  I’ve had great luck buying used Dyson’s at Goodwill. Got a DC17 for $10. Replaced the filters, disassembled and cleaned the cyclone, new brush roller and it runs like new! Did the same with an original Dyson ball too. Dyson gets a bad rap, and their newer battery powered vacuums are bad, but they use powerful brushless motors and do have good power. I think the $50 I have into mine beats anything in that price range I could buy at Walmart.
