  The travel shoe struggle is something I spent way too much time overthinking. Used to pack 3 pairs minimum because I couldn't find anything that worked for both walking miles through cities and looking presentable at dinner. The athletic ones made me look like a tourist everywhere, and the "travel" dress shoes fell apart after one trip. What changed everything for me was getting custom fitted shoes from IAMBIC. Yeah they're pricey but hear me out - I can walk 20,000+ steps through airports, cobblestone streets, whatever, and my feet feel fine. Plus they look professional enough that I don't stick out at business dinners or nicer restaurants. The app fitting process seemed weird at first but the shoes fit better than anything I've owned. I've put mine through hell - Singapore humidity, NYC winters, hiking through Patagonia between meetings - and they still look great. For more budget friendly options, I've heard good things about the Salomon X Ultra for pure comfort if you don't care about looks. My colleague swears by his Veja V-10s for that sweet spot of comfort and style but I haven't tried them myself. The Ecco Soft 7s are decent too if you need something more formal looking. But honestly after dealing with foot pain for years during travel, investing in proper footwear was worth every penny for me.

  For London or Paris, I’d go with a simple leather sneaker like Ecc⁤o Soft 7, Vejas, or Adid⁤as Stan Smiths. Maybe add a pair of nicer Chelsea boots if that’s your style. Both work well with jeans or slightly dressier pants and don’t make you stand out as a tourist. The most important thing is having decent insoles and shoes that are already broken in before you go. The cobblestones will destroy your feet otherwise. When I did a similar trip, I rented a couple of nicer outfits from Ren⁤t the Runway so I could pack lighter and focus my suitcase space (and budget) on one solid pair of shoes I could walk in all day. Dark socks and avoiding big white running shoes also help a lot with blending in.

  Been wearing Paul Greens for years and can confirm they're solid but definitely lean more classic/conservative looking. If you want something that'll actually last and can handle resoling, maybe also check out Clarks or even some of the European comfort brands like Ecco - they do wider widths and the leather quality is pretty good for the price point

  Make sure the lining is real leather, because anything synthetic just traps sweat and turns your shoes into a little damp box for your feet which is as grim as it sounds. Cheap bonded leather is what ruins most work heels, mostly because it traps moisture and starts to decay from the inside. Look for full grain leather for the upper, anything sold as guenine or corrected leather will crease and crack far too quickly. A real leather insole lets moisture escape instead of sitting in foam that never really dries... and that means far less smell over time. If your feet are wide, skip the so called round toes that still pinch in at the front. You want a last that is properly round. Which is why it matters. For repairs the outsole should be stitched rather than glued, a cobbler can actually work with that construction and it gives you more life from the shoe even if the maker economised elsewhere. A small stacked leather heel block lasts better than the usual hollow plastic heel and you can get it replaced cleanly when it wears down, the whole setup feels steadier too so it just works in a simple straightforward way. Clark’s older Chorus line and some of the Ecco Shape pumps are still worth checking, but look closely because different models vary. Ara’s wide fit pumps are good if you need width without the pointy fashion shapes.

  Waterproof woman's shoe/book that I can hike in or spend the whole day walking in

  I got Ecco Track 25 Chelsea boots at the recommendation of another redditor and I have been very happy with them. I’m a field worker and they work great in the office and in the field. I have no problems wearing them in the rain, snow, or a groomed hiking trail. My true field boots are hunting boots, but if I’m wearing these and something comes up I don’t hesitate to trudge out in them. I’ve had them 3 years now. They’re also easy to clean and maintain. The leather is thicker and doesn’t get that flaky worn look Blundstones get.

  What was the BIFL upgrade that instantly exposed all your cheap versions?

  I like Ecco but they don’t seem to make many high heels anymore. Rocky boots have served me well too. But I guess the problem with shoes is that styles change over time, so what I bought years ago doesn’t seem to exist anymore. If you buy for quality then they should last though.

  Ecco soft7 after 6 years

  I have a question about the Ecco’s. I bought a pair of the soft 7s several years ago and find them very comfortable and stylish. And was also impressed with the quality of the leather upper. I want to get another pair but I just can’t get past the mold seems on the front of the sole. Do any of you have this same issue? I wish I knew how to post a picture but it’s a mold seem straight down the middle of the sole in the front of the shoe. It’s almost like the sole was molded and there is a lot of overflow of material creating a very unsightly seem at front of shoe.

  Looking for dressy women shoes that I can walk a lot in and that are beautiful

  Get slip ons or smth that's easy closure. That'll make it simple to wear. Also a wider toe box can make a huuge difference in comfort, esp in dressier shoes so keep that in mind.   Honestly people here saying they need time for the shoe rest is crap. You get what you pay for until a certain extent. Designed shoes that cost a lot really suck. You can get new insoles but the sole of the shoe can’t be replaced. I’ve had crap shoes and really good shoes. I’d buy DC or Etnies and they would never last and wear out in 6 months to a year depending on use. The soles would wear out. Of course they were relatively cheap. A coworker recommended something along the lines of Ecco brand. I bought a pair and they have lasted me 2.5 years and still have plenty of life left in them. My DCs cost $65 and my Ecco’s cost $200. I also bought a similar type of Ecco for $130. Same goes for work books I bought cheap work boots that would last a year ( around $100) and then I bought a nice pair of Merrill’s ($180) and they have lasted me years and still have plenty of life left.

  Men’s shoes for casual office?

  I have worn multiple brands of business casual dress shoes. The ECCO is by far the most comfortable “on your feet” shoe in front of Cole Haan (imo). My advice, go to a shoe store with a shoe guy and have him give you your size, try on different shoes, then go to eBay and look for good deals on the brands you liked. There are tons of great deals on expensive shoes.

  Very sad to say Blundstones are no longer BIFL. I had a pair in my youth that lasted me a decade. Now after a few short months the soles of this pair has literally turned to dust!

  You're overestimating the distance a bit. 10mi in 1.5hr would be 6.7mph (=9:00/mi pace), which is faster than the majority of joggers run. It's likely that the distance is far closer to 5mi than 10mi. 5mi in 1.5hr would be 4mph, which = 15:00/mi pace ... which is still faster than the majority of walkers walk (I know this because I have a 3.4mi walking route around my neighborhood and if I'm walking fast it takes about 50:00... and I'm 6'3" and athletic). That said, they're decade old boots and he absolutely did just wear them out. I did the same to a pair of Ecco boots I mistakenly believed were for hiking, when I took them trekking in Patagonia. THe soles just absolutely disintegrated.

  I took my Ecco’s with the sole all worn out to a cobbler who replaced the whole bottom sole and treads and the shoes are basically brand new for $90 but already broken in. So comfy and cheaper than buying new.

  I was literally thinking about a pair of Eccos that have become my outdoor/work shoes as I was reading this post. Mine are also about 10 years old, and while they’ve taken a beating, they remain structurally sound. Actually, I think they’re technically sneaker-looking golf shoes I bought for everyday wear at the time because I thought they looked cool. (I don’t even golf.) But I can’t say for sure if Ecco is still making them like they used to. Been a while since I’ve purchased Ecco.

  What brand of shoes that lasts?

  Like over 10 years ago I found 2 pairs of Ecco suede shoes at a thrift store for 10$ each. One pair is a velcro closure and the other is tied but they both are kinda sneaker like. For the first 5 years they were my daily drivers for regular activity. They slowly became work shoe for like gardening, house cleaning etc. They are still 95% functional. I am in Canada and when I have to replace them it looks like a 200$ purchase per pair, but if the new ones are as good as the old ones that is money well spent. The treads on my old ones are wore but still a little there and they are both still waterproof and there has been zero separation of the sole to the body. Honestly, I am very impressed with these shoes as I am really hard on shoes. I did learn in the military to have to pairs of whatever you wear daily and alternate them so each pair has at least a day to air out.

  Ladies, what are the MOST comfortable boots you’ve worn for walking 10k+ steps a day?

  I really like my Ecco soft 7's. I have a slip on, sneaker and chelsea boot. I have tons of feet issues (heel pain, neuroma) and these are the only shows that don't hurt, they have good built in arch support. IMO they run a little small (I'm a 10.5 and need a 42) but they look nice and I wear them on vacation all the time.

  I have been wearing these shorts for 35 years on and off, and I am still in love.

  ECCO makes some nice shoes and some crap shoes too. My favorite shoes are a pair of ECCOs I’ve had for over 20 years, and wear them all the time. On the other hand, I had a pair of their dress shoes. The soles disintegrated during my mother’s funeral. They were 2 years old. Last pair for me.

  Ecco white leather sneakers were perfect for our trip to Europe. The treads were super grippy for wet stone walkways, stairs, etc. Can clean them up in the room, look good with all kinds of clothes. I also did really well in my Madewell loafers for sightseeing, and of course Birkenstocks.

  I have a food condition that requires me to wear shoes with a wide and high toe box. Because ECCO shoes do not come in a wide width, that is somewhat limiting. However, I love their sandals which can be adjusted accordingly (their Offroad and Yukatan styles). I have worn them on travel that required considerable walking. (I do wonder what closed walking shoes that have a wide/high toe box folks have had success with.)

  I wore Josef Seibel and Ecco sneakers on my last trip. They come in good colors so you don't have to wear white all the time. I wear them at home too, because they are good shoes. They're super comfy, well made and European brands. Some people say that Ecco quality is getting worse but mine have been great. Also, you will be clocked as Americans no matter what you wear. It's ok, just be polite and considerate, don't act entitled and you'll be fine. Patronize local businesses, don't carry Starbucks around all the time. Also, depending on where you're going, figure out the subway systems, it saves a ton of money.

  You’re gonna look like Americans 😅😂 just try not to look like Americans for the bad reasons 😅 If you really want to avoid the American look — go for something similar to business casual, smart casual. Those are rather universal for the western world. Unless you have some other cool style to go for. Don’t go for cargo pants, no ball caps, printed tees only if you’re younger, no logos on clothes, Just avoid the generic brooks etc white or off-white trainers. The ones old people wear. New Balance, Ecco, adidas street style, etc are good choices, depending on your age and overall style. And they’ll be comfortable for walking. Wearing trainers, or maybe sports style shoes is perfectly fine here, with jeans, etc. Just the street style ones, and the style depends on age (for example air Jordan’s are for younger people). Although trainers will look sort of weird if your clothes are very clean and pedantic.

  Saw somewhere else in the comments that you’ll be in London and Paris, and it’ll be autumn. One thing about quite a lot of trainers is that they aren’t very waterproof, and that could be quite uncomfortable if you’re walking around a lot while it’s raining. So if you do want to have something like trainers, I’d recommend something reasonably waterproof. Another option would be to get something like Goodyear welted walking boots – those will last ages if taken care of properly, but can take a while to break in. If you are going to go this route, I would recommend breaking in the boots before you go. I’m also seeing other people recommending things like Ecco shoes and Clark’s, and these would probably work reasonably well too. They’re not going to last as long as the goodyear welted boots, but they might be easier to get used to, and won’t require as much breaking in. They will also probably be less expensive than the boots.

  Looking for good dress shoe with removable insoles and repairable sole

  I’ve had great luck with Ecco shoes- they don’t have a removable insole though- however I made exception on these since my first pair are almost 20 years old- and still look like new- I am relatively heavy (215lbs) and go through quality hiking boots every 2 years. I am outside sales and walk on gravel, pavement, inside tile floors- and I am very abusive on shoes in general. But I can’t be happier with the longevity- I will take a picture and post if I can figure out how to do in a comment. my old ( approx 20 yrs) and new ( 3 yrs old ) pairs.

  Try looking into ECCO brand shoes and boots. My wife and I both use them and they are incredibly comfortable, durable and stylish. If possible, try and get them in an outlet store.
