If gas Ariens Pro Path SS21E 21 in has some commercial level long term performance (I'm talking lasting several years with decent gas and basic to no maintenance) If electric EGO is the go to right now for battery operated the EGO SNT2112 it's got a stainless steel auger and the link i sent comes with the charger and two batteries. Just in case I'd buy 1 or 2 more batteries at 5.0AH You'd prep before the storm charging all 3 or 4. Then as you get low swap the next one in if it gets to that. Worst case after your first storm and gauging the range and usage you can return the extra batteries.

Anyone keep a “BIFL Roster”?
I haven’t used the Milwaukee chainsaws but I have used their blowers - which sucked. IMO Ego destroys all other brands for battery powered yard equipment. It’s pricier but definitely check out their line of products - well worth it

The Ego is the best bang for the buck with that battery deal. It is also the best. It has more blowing force than the Greenworks. You just have to bite the bullet on batteries. Cheap batteries use cheap cells. Cheap cells go bad much quicker and are more dangerous. A more expensive battery will give you longer life with less chance of a fire due to better quality materials and production. There are a lot of places to skimp on things, but some places you don't. Electronics and lithium batteries are pretty high on that list for me. In this instance, you are getting the best product and a great battery for free. I was looking for power tools a couple years ago and Makita had a BOGO offer like this but better (+$100 off and free battery) on their 40V line. Was looking at 18V - but the deal and the tools were far better than other options I was looking at. Took full advantage of the opportunity and bought 3 BOGO kits. Saved $300 and got 3 free batteries ($200 each). I still kinda feel like a thief.

Personally, I would look at an EGO or Ryobi over the Toro. I really appreciate the network and existing parts distribution system that Toro offers, but their batteries are not well regarded and don't seem to be built for longevity

Costco greenworks has(or had) a 8 year warranty on batteries. Electric is the way to go unless you need the power of a gas one. I'm happy with my greenworks 80v tools, but think ego tools are probably better overall.

This is BIFL, not which of my two choices based on reviews is best. The king of outdoor battery stuff is EGO. Regardless of your opinion on price, they pretty much invented this market and all others followed. If you have no existing battery eco system, EGO is a top choice. You can use Chinesium amazon batteries for savings as they are being made now are are not teabag as I have two. Blowers are battery killers and they last way less long than a trimmer in duration, but I have a weed wacker, brush cutter, pole saw and blower. The brush cutter and saw are on their adapt a head system where you swap out the head with 3 batteries all 5AH, with two Chinesium batteries. I did have their saw, but ditched it when my use case changes after 25+ trees fell on my property and a Stihl gasser was needed due to speed and longevity, but their saws are pretty nice for a casual homeowner.

I bought a Craftsman V60 mower and blower on closeout that were being phased out. They lasted 2-1/2 seasons but didn’t have good battery management system. I researched and found that EGO comes out on top with a system that amongst other features, will discharge full batteries after 2 weeks so they don’t stay full all winter if you forget. No regrats.

Ego makes a lot of good stuff. I've had the mower, leaf blower, weed whip, multi head unit with pole saw, hedge trimmer and edger tool for 6 or 7 years now. I've had one of the 2.5 amp batteries go out and that's about it. The standout piece is the weed whip bu far, but everything else still works great. Just be aware you are committing to a battery economy and make sure you pick the one that fits all your needs.

I dont think i'd quite need 880 CFM but i'd say it's nice to have it available. Seems like the 765 cfm from the ego is pretty attractive being $299 on sale right now and also comes with a free extra 2.5 battery. Which I know are very expensive. I would be mostly blowing off driveway, clearing yard drains, blowing debris off the roof (some parts of the roof aren't easily accessible by walking around or safe, so a strong blower that I can just blow a further distance would be sufficient), drying the car after washing, blowing out the garage, blowing out patio, etc...

My ego stuff has held up well. I have had a mower for about 7 years and it’s still doing great. One of my string trimmers is at least that old, still chugging along. The batteries have held up well. The blowers are the best electric blowers in my opinion. I have a backpack blower (around 650 cfm IIRC) and a handheld 880 cfm blower. I had a 765 handheld and sold it. They have all been great but the 880 is on another level. It’s truly amazing and I primarily use it with a shorty / snub tube. I prefer the Milwaukee multi-head but the Ego blowers are definitely superior and their mowers are a better value. The ego multi head is good, I just prefer the Milwaukee. I wish ego made a bed redefiner and reciprocator or rotary scissor attachment like Milwaukee but they don’t. If you just want a blower, or blower and mower, I’d go ego. If you want a multi-head system to match and don’t quite need 880 cfm anyway, Milwaukee is another option to consider and Home Depot runs some good sales.

To clarify…I’m a consultant, who recommends by doing. I bought a Makita trimmer because it was in my battery ecosphere, used it on some property clearing, loved it for variable speeds and reverse, more like a scalpel. But when I put on the brush cutter it started to tap out. My recommendation to my client and his gardener, was to get into Ego products. We have two Ego professional chainsaws, ego weed wacker, ego blower, mini snowblower , and now an ego walk behind. All those purchases were a discount FOR the batteries…now all those batteries and chargers sit in a few locations on the property-just being convenient for the gardener. When it’s possible to be convenient to chargers, I recommend DC electric. Inversely there is a grandfathered Scag zero-turn, and I wouldn’t change that.

This not /r/best and there is no hive mind BIFL string trimmer. And we have no idea what battery ecosystem you own, so the answer is really based on if you are a Milwaukee man, get their trimmer as you already have the batteries. Replace Milwaukee with whatever brand you are a part of. EGO is a fan favorite if you aren't Powertool Johnny, but their eco system is currently mostly limited to yard tools. I'm an EGO and Milwaukee man but was an early adopter of EGO and haven't had an issue with them in 10+ years other than finding out electric chain saws are not on par with gassers.

Ego. Yes it's pricy, batteries are obnoxiously pricy. But the power is great, replacing string is easy. They have different models if you want adjustable lengths (which I have). Has high and low power modes. I run it in low and have cut through thick stuff. I also have the self propelled mower and leaf blower. Ive got 3 coworkers so far that got into the Ego line and are loving it. One coworker just bought the chainsaw and said it has a lot of power. So plenty of other tools you can use with the same battery system.

Project Farm on Youtube has done a couple videos on this. I'd check them out. Ego is up there. I have a Makita because my other tools are also Makita. It's been great for the 5 years or so that I've had it. I will say that you want to spend another $30 or so and get the Echo quick-feed head for it. Makes your life much easier. That's true for any trimmer that doesn't have a quick feed head though. The other reason I didn't go with Ego was the cost of the batteries. I was already getting batteries with the Makita (a deal where it came with 4 5ah ones) and I also bought a Makita chainsaw with the same deal so I have 8 total. I can do anything on my property with 4 batteries. I would say that if you watch the Project Farm video and look at the top 3 or 4 trimmers, any of those are going to be just fine.

I look to AGZA for BIFL electric lawn equipment, they make recommendations for commercial use based on durability in real-world testing. Their recommendations for this would be EGO Power+, Stihl AP, Husqvarna Commercial, Makita, and Greenworks Commercial. Of these, EGO and Makita will be the easiest to get and the most affordable. I can also attest that Milwaukee's lawn equipment is very good. They have one of the best electric mowers out there, and my dad and I both have Milwaukee weedeaters that work great

I got an Ego aluminum shaft with 2.5aH battery and like it a lot. r/egopowerplus is highly recommended for battery powered lawn equipment. When I was researching these a couple years ago, I read many reports of Milwaukee battery tabs burning out because high load of trimmer and battery seemingly not producing enough juice for the load.

I agree that performance is sacrificed for convenience when it comes to battery operated tools. But I disagree that the life of the tool is impacted. I am just now coming to End of Life on my earliest Ego batteries, after about 8 years. Luckily I bought a chainsaw and a lawnmower with bigger (heavier) batteries that work just fine in all the other tools. The tools themselves aren’t the weak spot.

I’ve always been a Makita guy without knowing anything about the corporate side. My tools always just felt more solid and durable than coworkers’ Dewalt or Milwaukee. Then I saw this in r/construction.
I have Makita circular saws, drills, and a weed wacker. I regret the weed wacker, cause it feels underpowered compared to my Ego blower and edger. After getting an Ego mower, I bought the other Ego lawn tools. My two cents: try out the Ego blower and mower before buying Makita.

Love our EGO stuff. The lawnmower is so quiet, you can actually talk to people while it's running (not the safest idea, just an example of volume), and the snowblower works great up here in Wisconsin. We've only got the three batteries, but I don't know if we've ever completely run out of juice before the snow has been cleared, and we have a moderately decent sized driveway and sidewalk.

Also Makita here. I’ve added two other battery systems though. I have a handful of the very small Bosch 12v tools and have loved every one of them. And for outdoor/garden I’ve gone with Ego. My one experience trying two Makita 18v batteries to power a lawnmower was extremely underwhelming. For demanding stuff like chainsaw and leaf blower you need a little more than the 18v line can give you.

Thanks for the thorough review. I feel like I'm leaning E-Go for lawn and etc, and DeWalt for tools. I'm 100% with you on B&D. If I didn't buy it when I needed a drill that day and I wasn't a broke college student that day, I wouldn't have got it. It does still work but battery life and power are very subpar. I'll definitely look into the mower before investing more. I still have a gas mower, and will probably get a pressure washer next, but tma big difference in electric mower reviews might make a big difference.

We have DeWalt and EGO, I can't offer comparisons to others. But I can share my experience with them. DeWalt has been solid, no complaints. Love. My husband uses them more, and it's his preferred brand. (He builds things, I am the yard maintenance person) I can say Black and Decker is not my fave, I find them to be affordable but not great. I have had them over time myself when money very much mattered. Just not very powerful, maybe it was whatever models I owned. I remember having torque issues. EGO -We have had a mower for about 6 years, and added since then. I think the last addition was maybe 3 years ago maybe 4. We were gifted the mower and a trimmer when we moved in to the house and so sort of ended up with the EGO system. I usually do lot of research on things. I had not on this system and there was not much to add to at the beginning, they hadn't expanded their line at that time. The mower is ok. I can tell is is not as powerful as gas, it struggles some in taller grass, you can here the change in the motor. That is my biggest con on any of these tools, and the plastic body of the mower on the bottom is starting to crack. It gets the job done but it's not super powerful. I do like I can adjust the handle height (I am 5'6") and how compact is folds up for storage. I like how easy it is to adjust the height of the blade. Maybe the newer batteries or newer mowers have improved on the power issue, but IDK about the body. The first battery we got, one of the big ones, is only now starting to lose charge. We'll be buying a second larger one soon, they have a lot more options now. (We had two but we had a garage break in and the took our OG trimmer and one of the larger batteries =/) I love the leaf blower. It will even run a decent amount of time on the smaller batteries. The larger one is not always enough for the area I need to clear some times of the year. I have a plug in one that is a blower/sucker/mulcher, and I prefer the EGO, much more ergonomic. I wish they had a leaf vacuum/mulcher. The trimmer and brush cutter are fine over all. The smaller batteries work for a good amount of time with them. If I have a lot to trim, I might need two. I don't use the brush cutter much, but it has worked well on the stuff we have needed it for, mostly english ivy. Trimmer, I wish I had picked a different one, it's more if an edger and I need one thats more for clearing high grass and weeds, but it works well over all. Main complaints on the trimmer are it can be tricky to get it to advance string, it was easier when it was new, and the weight is top heavy, battery is on the top end, and can get tiring for my hands to hold for long periods of time. I am not sure if it would be different in the center though, this is probably just a hand strength thing, maybe I need to do more kettlebell workouts. I find all the tools to be fairly comfortable to use, ergonomic-wise. I have a Sunjoe pressure washer, which is a plug in. At the time I didn't know EGO made pressure washers, maybe they didn't then, but I kinda wish I had one now...but I'm fine w/ the plug in, I don't have much to pressure wash far from the house anyway. But now I know! Oh and we have almost a half acre lot, its not all grass, maybe 1/3. We have a lot of driveway to keep clear with the blower, lots of areas to use the trimmer. They get a lot of use. I guess my main feedback is compare the mowers first, then the other tools. They just don't need as much oomph, or get as much abuse as the mower does. I'm curious to hear other folks experiences with this and other brands. Over all I have been happy with EGO, but I have no experience with other brands. Going to follow along!

Greenworks through Costco has an extended battery warranty fwiw Ego probably still makes the better tools though.

EGO is my personal favorite for lawn stuff. They have everything from weed whips to riding mowers and chain saws. No power tools though. DeWalt, great for power tools and they do a couple of yard tools like weed whips and leaf blowers. Good quality/price Milwaukee, same as DeWalt, but they also have a few neat things like heated jackets and pants. And have better battery size than DeWalt. So I went with EGO and DeWalt. Which I've been building up for 10 years or so.

That makes a ton of sense. I had not thought about that. No wonder I couldn't find much info about the best cross compatible battery for both those use cases. Thanks! I'm thinking sticking with e-go for lawn since the only truly bad unmitigated feedback is that their trimmer doesn't take universal attachments (proprietary only) and there's an Ace basically next door if I need a replacement. You wouldn't happen to have any feedback about their brand that I'm not seeing do you? For hobbyist level hand tools it seems to be just be team rivalry with none truly outclassing the others in reviews. Its almost tool specific.

All EGO products use the same batteries though they come in various capacities. They are backward-compatible unlike Greenworks. I’ve got a 7 year old EGO mower as well as a trimmer and chainsaw. I’m still using the original battery that came with the mower. As someone else said, I don’t think looking for commonality between tools and lawn equipment is an optimal solution.

Agreed. I have Ryobi for tools (saws, drills, etc ) and Kobalt 80v for lawn. Ryobi does lawn, too, in both 18v and 40v. Ryobi has a huge product line, so you can probably get any tool from them if there's a battery version. Milwaukee is probably the top mass-produced line in terms of quality, but it's priced accordingly. No lawn tools I know of from them. Lots of people like Ego lawn tools. They use a 56v battery. Take your time, check around and decide what works for you.

They're so good. I had some and gifted them to my dad because I found a killer deal on some stihl products at my local ace while shopping for stuff for my dad. It's weird, but he wouldn't take stuff if I bought it brand new for him, but he'd take my hand me downs. So I kept the stihl and gave him my ego stuff. Really miss it. It was a lot better.

Very happy I took a chance on ego. Push mower, blower, and whacker for my small property. Between the 3 batteries I get everything knocked out in about 2 hours and I don’t have to mess around with fuel. Never had any issues with em.

You already have ridgid, and ridgid has a lifetime warranty, so I'd just stay there. I have mostly Milwaukee tools, but I found such a killer deal on a ridgid cordless air compressor that I couldn't pass it up and ended up with a few ridgid tools as well. They're excellent. For a casual diyer, they're more than adequate. For your lawn tools, go for ego. I've had stihl, Milwaukee and ego. Ego wins.

I am in SE and I love the ego products, lawn mower, leaf blower, weed whacker and chain saw. I cannot handle the maintenance of a gas engine either, too many repairs, louder and more noxious overall.

It was lockdown splurge in spring 2020. Have never had one issue. I have harsh winters too which means it’s only used half the year but also stored in the shed in freezing temperatures the other half. It was always a major hassle bringing my gas mower out of hibernation in the spring, Ego immediately starts right up.

I’d add battery lawn equipment. My Ego mower is so much better than my previous gas Sears. More powerful, better cut, no oil change or exhaust. It wasn’t that long ago the battery stuff had effectively no power now if you make the switch you don’t notice any difference.

If you need yard equipment for summer too I would go with EGO. 2 10ah batteries in a 21 inch blower is insanely powerful considering the whole thing weighs about 60lbs too and they should last you about 10 years. It blew snow as fast as I could walk I love the sound of turbo mode. A little weirdly balenced to have a 10AH in a string trimmer though. The lawn mower has a beautiful amount of torque I mulched about 85% of my leaf clean ups this year and the leaf blower is the reason I fell in love with EGO. Not dealing with gas equipment that gets used a handful of times a year is very nice

Minnesota here. Same 2 stage Ego. Works just fine for me. But electric costs more initially. Lower (no?) maintenance and higher convince make up for the cost. Power is adequate or more than a same sized gas thrower. Plus, and this is the best part, my clothes don't smell like gas after I've cleared the drive. A single stage may work for you. Ego seems to be the best right now.

I live in the upper mid-west and this is my 2nd winter with an Ego snow blower (2-stage). I have a large driveway and over \~130' of sidewalk. Both the machine and the batteries are holding up fine.

Yeah, like a car which has a battery right? Stop using blanket statements like the ignorant. If you have battery snow blower experience, help OP....if you don't, keep your blanket over your head. OP, I have no advice as to whether they hold up or work well which are the TWO points you need to know, not just holding up. I also didn't know and I just got a gasser, but you do have a valid question. Also, it you already have a battery ecosystem, that would be the one to run. For example, I have a bunch of EGO stuffs and Milwaukee stuffs, so that's what I'd go with if I made the switch.
