Definitely utilize poshmark and other thrift sites! Eileen fisher is great for sophisticated but comfy. It tends to run about a size large, so she may be more of an xxs depending on the item.

I second that. If you have a local consignment store I bet they’ll have Eileen fisher. I shop almost exclusively used EF. It still might be a bit spendy for used clothes but it will last a lifetime.

I'm not sure that BIFL and clothing go together. To me, quality clothing means natural materials. Linen, silk, hemp, cotton, and wool. With care, those materials can last a long time, but not indefinitely. What I do is buy most of my clothing used, and I stick with Eileen Fisher and older LL Bean. I've found that those two brands seem to last, as long as I know how to fix a small hole, replace a button, and perform similar small repairs.

I was hoping I wouldn’t need a base layer so I hadn’t even considered silk! It could be a great option for when I travel. I just looked up Eileen Fisher and saw there’s a lot of pieces from that brand on sale at Nordstrom right now. I’ll try it in store and see if it works for me!

Sweaters for sensitive skin
Eileen fisher cotton/silk/linen blends? I have had sweaters that lasted years. Also, kowtow clothing has some great cotton sweaters. Is cashmere an option? I live in Texas and I know it’s psychological but wool makes me itchy and feel sweaty.

One can also search by label and size on ebay. There's an astounding amount of good clothes listed there. I recently bought an Eileen Fisher coat, baby alpacca no less, for much less than half price from someone. I had it dry cleaned and it looks like new! So soft, warm and light like a cloud. I paid around 250 usd for it and a similar new coat from them is almost 1 000 usd. i wear coats at least 4 months of the year and I'm sure i will last me the rest of my life (which may not be that long, granted, but still).

Eileen Fisher is really nice and you can oftentimes get them (gently used) at the consignment shops in the “fancy lady” neighborhoods. I have a couple long-sleeved EF tunics that were < $50 and were practically brand new. In general, consignment stores in wealthy neighborhoods are a goldmine. You won’t find anything dirt cheap, but you can get high-quality, barely used clothing for a fraction of their retail price.

I buy Eileen Fisher linen on EBay from buyers who allow for returns. I have several linen tunics from her and agree, they wear like iron when treated properly. I just got a wool coat for $100 with tags on ($398) in perfect condition and it will definitely last me for life! It’s so great when we’re able to get high quality clothing at such prices!

I have an Eileen Fisher linen tunic top that I wear (and wash) *at least* one time per week. Have had it going on 5 years. It’s still in pristine condition. Retailed for $199 and I got it on sale at Nordstrom rack for $89. 90 bucks for a shirt might seem steep but considering I’ve worn it well over 260xs and will continue to wear it, that breaks down to around 34cents per wear. And I second the thrift store tip. I always look out for silk shirts a size up and pay my seamstress a few bucks to tailor it. I’ve found the silk quality has declined significantly even in higher end new clothing.

Patagonia, Marmot, Orvis, LLBean (admittedly hit or miss), Barbour, Eileen Fisher (for women), check Irish import stores. Look at thrift stores for older Brooks Brothers, Ralph Lauren, Banana Republic, even Gap.

Women's professional/officewear?
Mostly pay attention to material. Linen, wool, 100% cotton. Check for sturdy stitching/good construction. Avoid anything synthetic if you really wanna BIFL (polyester is the worst). I have a vintage Pendleton blazer made of wool that is BEAUTIFUL (tbf I rarely wear it bc I work in a relaxed dress code office) but and I know it will last forever so it is my never-letting-go blazer. Silky tops made of polyester look cool but will not hold up; tops made of real silk (or cotton sateen) will. LL Bean, Pendleton, Eileen Fisher, Anne Taylor seem good, but I mostly shop thrift/vintage + make my own clothes so I can’t recommend a ton of brands specifically, just material tips :)

I love linen/hemp/ natural fibers like silk and wool. Eileen Fisher second hand is always a lovely find- just make sure you’re checking the tags. There must have been an era of their production that wasn’t great and they used more synthetics.

Garnet Hill has great cotton knit nightgowns. Also Hanro. Unsure about sizes. I like Eileen Fisher, but it's woven cotton, not knit. Vermont Country Store is overpriced but often has good sleepwear.

It is truly a tragedy what has become of stores that used to have quality pieces, especially given they have not adjusted prices according to their falls from grace. In any case, you may like Kuna for knits. If you like color, Maliparmi has exceptional pieces, but the price tags reflect this. Overall, small European or South American brands seem to pride themselves more on their quality of material and production. Less whimsical overall, but I have personally moved onto Eileen Fisher for quality simple pieces. They do seem to cut their clothes in an overall very flattering way. I have tested their tops against other fast fashion, including the ones that tout quality, and they simply hold up better. I mix in other pieces made of reliably solid materials (e.g. linens like from LinenHandmadeStudio on Etsy, real cashmere or other quality fabrics from wherever I’m traveling) to make my wardrobe more unique.

Cotton, Linen, Wool clothing recommendations?
Eileen Fisher in Poshmark or thred up has a lot of linen. I buy my linen tops and dresses off Etsy. I basically found one brand/supplier I like and buy a shirt or two and a dress or something else every year or so. They are all still in great condition. I scour sales and read labels like a hawk. I have 15 year old wool sweaters from GAP that still look nice. I do a sweater wash day every so often, they are all laying flat to dry. The ones that say machine washable, I wash on gentle and still lay flat to dry.

Which women’s clothing brands do you stalk for sales? (20-30 age style)
Salvatore Ferragamo, Eileen Fisher, Frye, Dr. Martens, Cole Haan, Nisolo, Vintage coach, and LL Bean, but I stall not only sales but also stalk second hand sites. For these brands, especially vintage, I find that these are quality.
