  My 2025 BIFL products this year, how about you?

  Wera 1/4” wrench set and 2 screwdriver (1 ratchet). Burberry duffle coat cotton/rabbit fur and trench coat cotton/reindeer leather trim. De Buyer carbone plus frying pan. Liebherr fridge.  Replaced all my batteries with Eneloop rechargeables.  I helped my parents choose a Miele washing machine this week to replace a Samsung. I went ‘round to fix a worn gasket and found it had worn away because the drum was warped. I didn’t bother trying to find out why the drum was  warped. Oh I also found a Knomo leather bag for my mother.

  Rechargeable Christmas candles

  Anything with an embedded battery will die eventually. I bought ones that take AA batteries and use Eneloop batteries. They’ve been working great for about 5 years so far.

  Ikea LADDA are the best value, if you decide to go for Eneloops I would go for the Eneloop Pro.

  Rechargeable Battery Help!

  I just spent some time down this rabbit hole. I ended up with Enloop AAA and Ladda (IKEA brand) AA with an IKEA charger. My understanding is that they are both made in the same factory in Japan. The reason for the split in brands was my local IKEA didn't have AAA in stock and Best Buy offered free shipping. I have also seen many many recommendations to NOT purchase Enloop batteries on Amazon. Apparently they are frequently knock-offs.

  What's a purchase under $50 that has genuinely improved your daily routine?

  hario v60 pourover or mokka pot if i want something stronger, burr grinder coffee grinder to accommodate both pourover and espresso based beans. ground beef separator tool eneloop rechargeable batteries klean kanteen 800ml bottle - bought an off brand flip straw thing various lighting, usb a, usb c adapters... because my household has all kinds of devices with different ports.

  Oh totally agree. The devices I use eneloop for, they work great. But totally agree 1.5v is necessary for certain devices.  I have a Flume 2 unit, straps to my water meter and measures water usage and detects leaks. I use Tenavolt 1.5v rechargeable lithium batteries. First go around they lasted 8 months

  Fyi, any battery with USB charging built into the actual battery is going to have less capacity than one without. I'm all for rechargable batteries, I've got Eneloop going on 8 years now, but I prefer the standalone charger.

  Eneloops especially for higher current demands. I use them in my professional grade Camera flash. They also have a very long shelf life for holding a charge when not in use.

  What is a BIFL item/product you recommend?

  I have the briggs and Riley Baseline carryon, medium roller (getting the Large/XL means you will be over the 50lb domestic (US) weight limit), and a cabin 2-wheel underseat roller. Great bags, although the wife wanted Away (seem nice so far, but not my preference). Tom Bihn backpacks. Took a week long trip to the tropics and the bag is a little unorthodox but it can hold a lot of stuff. And you have a variety of fabrics to select. Bose over hear headphones - great for travel and mine have lasted for awhile. For life is somewhat limited but its an electronic item that has a little tech, its a tradeoff. Sonicare toothbrush - It is like 10 years old on the original battery. Teeth are life. Agree with the Leatherman Wave+, good tool doesn't really excel at any one thing, but useful to have. Cookware: DeBuyer carbon steel country fry pan. I prefer this over cast iron. Demeyere Atlantis Fry pan - great steel fry pan. Allclad copper core (functionally similar to the d3 but I like the appearance of the copper line that shows through and I don't worry about cleaning it). I have watches. Mechanical ones are nice but as the old joke goes if you have to pick a watch to wear for the rest of your life what would you choose and no you can't choose your g-shock. NiMH batteries - where possible get rid of alkaline even if they are cheaper. They will leak and ruin your day and maybe even the device they are in. I choose Eneloops, the normal not the pro variant. Skip the LION batteries for now as they are 3.7v and require a voltage regulator to go to 1.5v, but if you need the 1.5v instead of 1.2v for the device meaning the NiMH won't work then the normal 1.6v lithium batteries would work. High quality LED lights - CRI should be 90+. They are a long term consumable but higher quality light is better. Knipex and Klein for tools. Knipex makes my favorite generalist pliers/wrenches. Klien makes great hand tools, I prefer the MiUSA options and use their linesmans for random things. Klien also makes a bottle opener, Wera does too and they are somewhat comfortable to hold. Clothes that don't have spandex. Spandex and elastic fail. I have had Patagonia fleece for 30 years and it still works. Randolph sunglasses - I just like them. Ray Ban 4140, they have spring hinges which means I can wear my spouse's and they have had theirs for 15 years although I had to buy new aftermarket lenses. Also discovered a french brand Cartel that also uses spring hinges, but don't know enough about this brand. Miele Washer and Dryer - gets rid of the vent ducting behind and they are solid if a little quirky. They canister vacuum is great. Converted the in-laws to this brand and they just went from the upright to the canister.

  Use rechargeable batteries. Have two sets, one on the charger and one in the frother. This worked well for me for years, until I stopped drinking coffee. Enloop is a good brand, or you could go with Amazon's generic brand. I've also heard putting milk in a French press and going up and down with the filter is really good at frothing milk, but I've never tried this.

  Fastest AA Charging Dock for Enloop rechargeable batteries

  The CC17 is an extremely slow charger and IMHO not great if you don't have sufficient spares to swap out. If you need your camera to run continuously, I would recommend purchasing an additional six cells (whether they be rechargeable or not). Powerex chargers are BIFL. When I purchased my MH-C9000PRO around 2010-ish, they were considered state-of-the-art. I still use it to this day, and I still use a lot of eneloops that I purchased around and before 2010. The charger has the ability to refresh NiMH batteries and it does this very well. You can also set the charge rate, so it can charge super fast. They offer some options that hold more than 4 cells, although I am not sure if they are advanced as the 9000. Eneloop produces several fast-charge chargers optimized for their batteries, too. I own one, but I can't say much about its longevity. It does charge quickly, but I am not sure if it is as capable as the Powerex regarding the ability to rescue dying cells. You may want to check out a subreddit like r/flashlights to see what the top recommendations are today. There could be better options than Powerex as a lot can change in a decade and a half. Finally, it is worth noting that there are some devices that just do not play nice with the lower voltages of NiMH. They are increasingly rare, and usually devices do better with NiMH than they do alkalines, but some exceptions exist, and this is more common with devices that take a high number of AA batteries. This is likely what you are experiencing. You can either continue to accept having to charge them more often, try eneloop pro (which may give you longer periods between changing, but at the expense of cycle life), or use alkaline batteries.
