Where do you usually buy printer ink in the UK without getting ripped off?
You need an Epson EcoTank, those are very good value for money for bulk printing. Ideally you shouldn’t be using a standard inkjet printer for such high volumes but any third party cartridge website will do. That or a colour laser printer

I’d say there’s nothing hidden about it. Historically laser printers are cheap to run. Compared to cartridge based inkjet printers they’re still economical. Laser printers haven’t evolved though and inkjets have. Now every major printer manufacturer is offering ink tank printers including brother. But Epson were there first and not just by a few months. By years. They have a massive ecosystem of ink tank printers at all price points with a range of features. Worth spending that money on a laser printer? For what? To print some documents that it seems only you are going to read - fyi an inkjet can typically print at a higher quality / resolution than most business class lasers anyway. There’s other considerations of course. Massive size and weight difference. Massive difference in power consumption.

What sort of budget are we looking at? I’m gonna say Epson EcoTank but the specific model depends on a) budget and b) use case. Epson tend to be very versatile with their media handling capabilities so on the face of it I’d say all your listed needs are doable with most models. Do you need to handle large format media, for example A3+? Do you need to be able to work with textiles / dye sublimation- for T shirts, mugs, etc? Are you printing in high volumes / need speed?

Yes. I spent several hours doing a bunch of research into the various printers and eventually went with an Epson Inkjet EcoTank printer as at least you can get 3rd party ink and even OEM ink isn't that expensive. Definitely more hassle to deal with than a laser printer as I had to set a reminder for myself to print a test page weekly to avoid nozzle issues.

My work office use brother all in one laser printer. At home, I have 4 yrs old epson ecotank (no fax). I work from home, I print a lot and there are other users in my house too. I only refilled the black ($20) once while the other colours are still half from the original purchased included in the machine. And I always print in colour. There are ecotank model that has fax available. The ink is so cheap compared to those that use cartridges.

I had an old Epson TX-115 custom fitted with refillable tanks. Looks a bit like the printer has a colostomy bag, but it works and it's so much cheaper than getting cartridges. I have to do a lot of printing, so it was a great solution.

Brother is B/W specialized and Epson ecotank shines after A3 size. If you just need A4 size but with absolutely low maintenance and low ink cost, Canon g550 or similar is the answer.

Everyone is gonna scream brother laser, but it's black and white, and you're going to pay more for color and a scanner. The Epson ecotank has everything. I have been using mine on the ink it came with for literally 6 years, and I feel like I could go 3 or 4 more. My color is half gone, my black is full and I have half a bottle left which could basically fill it again.

Subreddit decline in quality
Anything computer related won't be. I do have a 20 year old scanner that still works on my new machine but 20 years isn't buy it for life either lol. (Old school Epson it still manages to work with its old ass drivers). I consider 20 years pretty hood for a scanner though. My 15+ Canon printer is still going too although I refill my ink myself lol. Most stuff however is planned to be obsolete.

Probably one of the few Epsons that are okay. I have a smaller epson 3in1 that wasn't in use for a few years. When I tested it, black and yellow had obviously clogged ports and didn't print well. A plastic tube, a syringe and alcohol made it an easy cleanup, even if any technician tells you it can't be fixed. Original ink cartridges are rare to find, but third party ones are a few euro each. It's about 10 years old and as any other inkjet, it needs to be used every now and then so it doesn't clog - but even if it does, it's an easy fix. And it's a model from before they started locking you out of using the device and doing some veeeery questionable things. Still, it does start acting weird sometimes (the software part of it) and reinstalling it fixes those. Epson is not a manufacturer whose printers i'd recommend to anyone, but if you are lucky enough to have an older model without those heavy anti-consumer software locks, unclog those ports and use it!

What is the best, small printer? Preferably one that can do color as well, but I don't want ink and not the most expensive. So if it has to be black/white only that's fine. I hear Brother is good, but most I see are HUGE.
Not sure what your budget it, but I just helped a family member printer shop who needed something small and color for occasional use. They ended up settleing on the Epson xp-8700. There is a similar 8800. Not sure if the shop around prices are in your budget, but these had decent reviews and were way smaller than most every other 3 in 1 on the market in that price range. Being able to print the occasional picture in between photo orders was a nice extra.

i bought the epson ecotank et2865 (EU so it will have different numbers in your region...) and it came with bad printing quality. Had it returned and they fixed it without telling what the problem was. It's working now and prints good but very slow. It's also one-side printing.

What’s one item you bought that way outperformed its price?
Epson Ecotank printer. Ive had it almost 6 years or so and am still on the ink it came with. I print pretty consistently except for a period of one year where it sat. I ran the maintenance purging the lines which took several hours and it printed good as new after.

No printer is BifL, but right now (May 2025) you won't go wrong if remember this: **Epson for Inkjet, Brother for Laser.** Even easier if you go to Costco and buy whatever model of those brands are there. Costco does a lot of research, proofing, and their mass buys mean you get the second or third best product in its category for the absolute best price. No need to pay $800 for a model when the Costco choice will do 90% of all that for only $250.

I got an Epson Ecotank ET-2850 not too long ago. I can't speak to it's lifespan/durability yet, but so far it's been great. The print quality is great. I got it as it uses refillable ink instead of non-refillable cartridges like most printers. This will significantly reduce the cost of ink. So far, it has been so much easier to use than any other printer I've had.

I’ve tried them all and used to work for HP. My current favorite is the Epson eco tank. I’ve got the 2850 and it works fine enough. Wish I bought this long ago. Ink cartridges are a plague on society. Cost/ mess/ waste not worth it. Kudos to any printer manufacturer balls enough to give up profits and make a jumbo tank printer like the eco printers.

Tried the ET-8500 recently and wow—this should 100% be on your checklist if you’re into photo printing. The quality is incredible (6-color ink with gray + photo black makes a difference), and since it’s EcoTank, you're not burning money on cartridges every other week. Borderless prints up to 8.5x11 look super clean, and the running costs are way lower than you'd expect for this level of output. Great mix of pro-quality results and hassle-free use. Definitely worth a look.

I sometimes print on those paper-backed fabric sheets for quilters, so I needed inkjet and not laser. Epson’s “Ecotank” line (where you buy ink bottles instead of cartridges) has been great for this—I bought the lowest-priced one that had a glass scanner instead of a document feeder because I wanted the option to scan things from books. So far the only trouble it’s given me was my own fault (accidentally dropped a tiny piece of plastic in the paper slot which caused some jams) and the ink has yet to need refilling in about a year’s worth of occasional printing.

Brother Printers - No Longer BIFL
This is a several-years-old change. I've been mentioning this in every thread about printers for over a year now (and it wasn't new when I first found out about it). The chip swap also worked for me though, and, at least for now, it's still pretty easy. A lot of people still swear by them because they have old, non-internet connected brother printers that don't get the auto update, not realizing that newer printers are different. Unfortunately, there aren't that many better options. Epson Eco-tank printers are apparently good if you are ok with inkjet (I've never used one so I don't know, but people online appear to be happy), but if you want a laser printer, I don't know of anyone who doesn't do this kind of BS, so Brother is (probably) still the least-bad of all the options. Since their actual hardware is pretty good, and, for now, getting around their DRM is pretty easy.

Brother Printers - No Longer BIFL
Epson RX380 and externally mounted CIS system since 2006ish. $200 for the printer, $120 for the CIS system with all SIX bottles of ink. Prints CD/DVDs as well, edge to edge, paper, photo paper, etc. ZERO issues in all this time, never had to buy spendy Epson refills (at $120 for 12ml x6 cartridges!) either.

I bought one of those Epson liquid Ink tank printers and we haven’t had issues. We’ll only sometimes needing to turn it off and on again. It was prettt expensive but paid off long term. Idk about “for life” but we haven’t had it for 5 years ish.

You cannot buy a color Megatank printer to print exclusively in Black and White(the colour head might clog up). If you are just printing black and white, then you are better off with an Epson Ecotank M3170, which is intended for fast, cheap b/w prints. No laser would beat your printing costs. If your prints are distributed across the week, you would absolutely love this printer.

Canon Megatank (With Replaceable Heads & Inkpads) & Epson Ecotanks (With replaceable Ink pads). No laser printer comes close to the per page cost of 0.3 cents per page, not even monochrome lasers. One refill will give you close to 7000 pages b/w or colour; original refills cost you around 60$ for 4 genuine bottles. If you buy aftermarkets from reputed brands (such as LD), the cost is halved 20-30$= 7000 pages. These are the best printers for bulk printing. Only suitable if you use it regularly (at least twice a week, all colour print(CMYK)). If you must replace a head, its easily replaceable and you don't have to replace ink pads often as long as you don't do a lot of head cleanings. Besides that its much cheaper to run continuously (15W vs 1000W for a laser), no toner waste other than small plastic bottles, and the printers generally cost about 1/2 or less than that of a laser printer.

That has not been my experience either professionally or personally. I own a Brother Laser and an Epson tank; both are less than five years old and have worked seamlessly without issue. Most of the problems owners run into is simply failing to due routine maintenance.

IDK about the paper or cardboard but I have been very happy with the Epson ink tank printer. You can usually find them on sale at Costco. The ink gets refilled from a larger container and it lasts a long time. I've had mine for 2 years and haven't had any issues. I can't say that about Canon or Brother.

If I needed a new printer, I would go with any non-Walmart Epson EcoTank. My first printer was an Epson, and it lasted my family well over a decade. Our second and third ones were HP, and they sucked. They each died after two years. Bought a Brother printer, still using it five years in, but we're locked in to using "genuine" cartridges as dupes don't interface properly.

I recently (2 years ago) bought an Epson refillable tank printer and have been extremely impressed with how long the ink lasts and the quality of the printing. I previously had an HP and with software issues and only being able to use HP cartridges, it was a cluster f**k.
