  Ethan Allen! I bought my sectional 19 years ago and it’s still structurally in great shape. A few cushions could be replaced, but so far nothing has bothered me enough to order any. The fabric has pilled on some cushions, which led me to investigate reupholstering, but have been told it’s just as expensive as buying a new couch. I still may reupholster because I don’t want to contribute to landfill :-)

  You are not alone. We are all here because we have been searching, fruitlessly and tirelessly, for a quality couch. Don't be like me and do years of research only to end up with something that is too firm but looks pretty. If you don't mind a slightly more traditional or vintage look, learn the top quality brands and pounce on them on facebook marketplace. Ethan Allen, CR Laine, Rowe, anything Italian, most Room and Board or Arhaus models. Expand your radius to search in the wealthier parts of town. You can get top quality pieces in really good condition for a fraction of the price. And you can make any style work with the right design around it. An English roll-arm can look really cool with a more modern rug and coffee table. Pay close attention to dimensions - the seat depth and height is important for how it will sit. Tell them you want to come see it before making an offer. People will negotiate bc they're just happy you're getting it out of their space. If it's a vintage couch that looks almost new, chances are that thing is built to last.

  I lucked into a nearly new Ethan Allen sofa for less than 10% of the retail cost. This thing is really nicely built, lovely fabric, stout cushions. It's even signed by the craftsmen who built it (under the cushions). This one came from an estate sale. I'm thrilled and I think it will outlive me.

  I didn’t buy it but my parents bought me a desk from Ethan Allen when I was eight years old.  I turned 50 this year and it is still the desk I use every day either working from home or for personal use.

  Which recliner would be the best ones for new parents?

  I have had this chair for 7 years since my kid was a baby. Not a recliner, but a glider with ottoman that doesn’t look like nursery furniture. We still use it in the kids room for me to sit and read to her or snuggle time, but once it’s done in there, we’ll move it into the living room.   Is the thuma bed worth it?

  When I upgraded from a queen to king mattress, I looked into many options in all price ranges. I just couldn’t stomach spending so much on furniture. I like design and style but I’d rather spend my money on traveling. I ended up finding a beautiful, Ethan Allen cherry wood 4 poster bed frame for $150 off FB Marketplace. I think it was made in the 80’s or 90’s. It’s not my dream bed, but I sleep and dream very well. And, it was $150 and fit in the van I borrowed from my parents. The original owners used it a long time. I’ve used it over 6 years, moved 3x, and I think it’s beautiful, comfortable, silent, and will last forever.

  I remember going into the Ethan Allen store with my mom some 15 years ago, and we sat down on that in-store sofa, and it was clearly the one they have had in their store for a long tome, and was well love. But oh so comfortable. Then, along came the saleslady, who got cozy with us as she sat down with by my mom with a her clipboard to ask us if we had ever been there before. We had not. We buy so many things ready made, including sofas, and are expected to make us work around their perimeters no matter how much the readymade ones say they are capable of “adjusting to the modern day home & family”. It was a bit of a shock and an experience that my mom & I didn’t know we were going to be receiving, when we got there. Because it works the other way around, we were a bit taken aback by Ethan Allen’s process. But it justifies why they are often mention in these answers. Their business model of how a piece of furniture isn’t ready-made, but is made for you, is why is lasts a lifetime. We left the store that day a little overwhelmed, and didn’t buy anything. But we ~~regretted~~ always remembered it.

  Search Facebook marketplace. I found a secondhand Ethan Allen sofa retailing for 2500 and I paid $800. It's like new and I know it will last a lifetime. I also purchased a vintage Drexel green velvet sofa from an estate sale. It is so comfortable and dog friendly. My unexpected find at $150. The foam cushions can be redone with new filling/foam. I 100% agree with Amish made. We have a local furniture store that sells Amish furniture with sofas starting at around 1500.

  What are the BIFL couch brands that can be found in stores?

  My dogs use my Ethan Allen couches as a wrestling mat and dive on them from across the room. They have held up well to this abuse. I also bought the velvet fabric and have washed off mud with just a washcloth and water.

  Desperately need couch recs please

  Ok hear me out, but we got a fabric couch from Ashley where the cushions are removable and unzip. I mistakenly dried some and there is a rip in the back of one, but after 6 years it looks great. I don't know what kind of fabric it is, but it just works. Also, instead of buying it from Ashley, we saw the same dang couch with the same ugly pillows (threw ikea covers on them), at Mor furniture for half price. we paid 2500 for our sectional  My point is, if you can get a nice one, do it. Ethan Allen, Crate and Barrel, great. If you need budget friendly, there is stuff out there if you are willing to hunt a bit.

  Name your top 5 BIFL items

  My top five: 1. Tempurpedic mattress - going strong for 11 years and still feels like new 2. Blendtec blender - had it for 10 years and over 4k blends (it keeps track on the blender, which I love) and still going strong. I know the Vitamix is outstanding and told myself I’d buy one when the Blendtec dies, but here we are. Especially if you just need a blender and not necessarily all the additional functions Vitamix offers, Blendtec is durable and exceptional. 3. The OG Lululemon Wunderunder leggings - bought mine 15 years ago and they still look like new after years of hot yoga and group fitness classes. 4. Ethan Allen dining table - over 35+ years old. My parents gave their table and chairs to us. Wound up upgrading to new chairs from Ruggable a few years ago, but the table continues to be in exceptional condition. 5. Sorel boots - I live in Wisconsin, so my winter boots get heavy use and I’m impressed that my Joan of Artic pair are still warm and have excellent traction for the past 8 years.

  Yeah almost all of my furniture is from Facebook marketplace. I got an Ethan Allen chair that I adore for $50 and I know it will last forever. Sometimes you can find real gems.

  Second hand. Quality furniture. I have two Ethan Alan sofas that will last me a lifetime that I purchased on Facebook marketplace and an estate sale. Solid wood furniture. It takes a bit of time searching. I have a vintage Drexel sofa in Green velvet that I paid $150 for last year. It is so comfortable and solidly made a new sofa of this quality would've caused thousands of dollars happy hunting.

  I'm no good at buying good furniture. Any tips there on how to make sure I'm getting it for an affordable price while maintaining quality?

  So my rule of thumb is: Spend money on what you use the most. Do not buy from companies that do not give thorough info on the materials and make of a piece. (rooms to go and Ashleys are perfect examples of not giving you information that you need, sure this couch is 100% polyester, but what is the frame made of? What kind of foam is in the seats? 0 info) Secondhand + Facebook marketplace are your friends (for the most part) If you have to buy cheaper-make sure the company is honest about construction. I mainly do this with organizational objects. (IKEA is a good example of honest construction) Focus on buying natural fabrics and other natural materials. I honestly like Crate and Barrel, Arhaus (fucking expensive), Ethan Allen West Elm, room and board, and IKEA- they are honest about construction and offer natural materials. But for any company-some items are great and some are poor. You just need to be thoroughly looking through the construction and reviews for each piece. I have yet to find a company that DOESN'T have bad reviews. Even the like old custom furniture builders from NC. They are honest in construction but still will get the shit review or so. Most of these companies will also have bad reviews for just the delivery and customer service part of the experience. If you can-before you make a purchase online, try to go to the store in person to get a feel for the fabric you want to choose and sit on that furniture or similar items. Know that the floor model will probably be dinged up or more broken in than what you will get. Most good couches have to be broken in a bit before they get really comfortable it seems. This is just the research of a person who has been trying to find a Buyitforlife couch at a reasonable price, that is also cute. Take what works for you. hope it helps and I can save you some of my own personal headaches.

  Where to buy a real solid iron bed?

  Looks like a classic Ethan Allen metal bed. Actually has 4 additional legs down the vertical middle, so a total of 12 legs on the floor. I used to have one from the mid 90s. Maybe someone like Worthen still makes them like that.

  What’s something you should BIFL that most people cheap out on?

  We were going to liquidate my mom’s estate through an estate sale and auction the home. They said her Ethan Allen furniture would be lucky to bring $50 per piece and that usually high end dressers go for $20-$40. Us siblings ended up splitting up the stuff we loved - i ended up with all of the EA furniture and we donated everything else.

  I don't have that budget, either. If you live in a top 100 metro, look for consignment furniture stores near the richest neighborhoods. That's how we scored an Ethan Allen couch in great shape for Ashley Furniture price.

  Is this Arhaus bed a good decision?

  I was looking at the Charlton bed as well. I have had good luck with Ethan Allen furniture in the past, but I decided to buy the St. Martin set because I liked the style better and with the sale it was a bit more reasonable. I ordered the dark brown finish because it goes better with my wood flooring. We got the bed, two dressers and two bedside tables. I hope I like it as much in person as in the photos.   Searching for a quality couch

  A lot of places have cut corners in the past 10-15 years that used to put out great stuff which is very sad. This is all dependent on what style and budget you want, and also if you have the 8ish weeks a special order will take (unless you look used which I highly recommend) First, I would go to a locally-owned, mom and pop place, not a giant chain. You're more likely to find smaller brands that still do things well that way. Things to look for, aside from style and comfort: Springs - 8-way hand/machine tied will be the best, they will be actual coil springs under the cushions that will support much better. Most places have switched to a sinuous spring which is flat and is ok, but not nearly as durable Frame - pick up a corner of the sofa. Is it heavy? Does it stay solid or twist when you lift it? Heavy is good for durability, and is stability. You want corner blocks if you can find them to keep the frame from twisting. Sometimes you can even find built-in legs, rather than removable which is excellent for durability (not so much if you have narrow doorways or hallways) Warranty - how long will the company cover issues? The warranty on the soft bits, fabric and cushions, probably won't be too long, but the frame should have a good, long warranty. Also check how they do repairs, will it be very annoying to actually use the warranty? (Chances are yes, but you never know) Fabric choices - Do they only have a handful of fabrics to choose from? Sounds mass-produced or like they should have a very good reason for it. Your sofa is probably your biggest piece of furniture and is the focal point for your room, people want to have it look a certain way and a good company will give options Cushion - down feels great, but are you up to fluffing it weekly? Loose cushions need to be straightened regularly but are important for even wear - being able to rotate and flip cushions ensures there's not one obvious spot where you always sit (note that this means they should be upholstered on all sides). If the cushions are not loose/flippable, the back/seat should be firm. Size - unless you are in your forever home, don't buy a giant sofa that will be hard to fit elsewhere The top brands I would look for when shopping, assuming budget isn't really a concern (these had the qualities listed above when I sold furniture in 2008-10, fully aware things may have changed): Norwalk - stylish, customizable Smith Brothers - Small Midwestern brand, definitely less stylish but impeccable construction Flexsteel - not just recliners, was a favorite among the sales people Ethan Allen (especially vintage) - My partner has a loveseat from his childhood that sits like brand new If they have a catalog with a huge distribution or are online-only or so influencer marketing, I would question it. All that said, I bought a new sofa last fall and it's from Pottery Barn 😅 I wanted something very specific that was hard to find in-store to test and they gave me financing which I needed. Bottom line, any decent brand-new sofa is going to cost you into the thousands so make sure you can try it and you love it. Depending on where you are and your ability to transport and carry a sofa, Facebook marketplace can have some fantastic finds. I still think about some I missed out on due to logistics/size not working

  We’ve had our Ethan Allen sleeper since 2003 with several cats and a toddler now grown. And a relative sleeping on the replacement (Amazon or Overstock, I forget which) foam mattress for 4 years. It’s still great.

  Anyone have any experience/reviews with Conway sofas from Ethan Allen?

  I have two Conway, one from 2015 and one from 2020 with two chases. You definitely have to be careful about your leather choice and what grade it is. Love them both and they both hold up quite well between 3 boys, my husband and 3 dogs. I buy quite a bit of furniture from them and you have to be careful of anything you buy. The cheaper the grade of material, the less it will last.

  What’s one item you bought that has lasted for YEARS and was worth every penny?

  My boyfriend and I rescued four Ethan Allen dining chairs out of a dumpster, and my god, they're fantastic. I only regret our apartment was waaaay too small to take the table and other four chairs of the set. I managed to sell our old set (a perfectly solid 1980s oak windsor chairs...) to pay for the new cushions and fabric to recover them. The early 20s girl and her mom who bought them were commenting on how much more solid the chairs I sold 'em were than the set they got on Wayfair. I'm 100% sure those oak chairs were older than she was, and they'll last another 20, at least.

  Buying a quality couch that can last more than 2 years?

  Room and Board and Ethan Allen are two brands I bought. New they are over budget. But used you can afford. I bought a decade used Ethan Allen for 400 bucks and it is still going strong after using it myself for a few years. I threw the covers in the wash on gentle and cold even though they say not to and they got clean and fresh with no issues. Ethan Allen is HEAVY, Room and Board is a bit lighter. I hired a local mover for it and they did it themself for 100 bucks.
