  Just saw a lot of people promoting merino wool here

  Anything with cables is more prone to snagging, with uneven stitch spacing and raised bits. I’ve had to gently fix some of my arans due to enthusiastic dog greetings dozens of times. Less often due to my own clumsiness, but I’ve snagged them on thorns, branches etc. as well. An unembellished crewneck won’t have the same chance, though it’s not impossible with those either. Wool does require storage in cedar or at least with the oil (bonus is it smells nice!) and there is a soap called Eucalan that helps restore some lanolin to maintain the fibers.

  You can buy and use a no-rinse wool wash and wash them at home if you have the space to dry them flat! As long as you use cool water and don't agitate it, it shouldn't felt. I personally like Eucalan, but there are others too. Just soak them in lukewarm water in a tub (I have a laundry tub for that, but like any large enough water holding container works or a bath tub or large enough sink works) with the directed amount of soap for the directed amount of time. Then remove it while supporting the whole thing, let it drip and then lay it flat on a towel. Roll it up in the towel, step on it a few times to squish out excess water, then take it in the roll to wherever you can lay it flat to dry.

  Woolen shawl care and maintenance

  If you need to wash, only use Eucalan. It's a no rinse detergent designed for wool that contains lanolin so it will restore softness to the shawl. Then dry flat (like on a drying rack) on a dry, non-humid, breezy day. Otherwise, just air out your wool items periodically. The yak wool can be washed like the wool.

  Is it typical for darn toughs to look like this after HALF A DAY OF USE!?

  I just learned this recently, so I'll spread the news. All wool textiles have short & long fibers in them. There's a breaking in period for garments where the short fibers separate & work their way out, causing pilling. This happens naturally & is accelerated through friction. Use a sweater shaver to remove pilling. As you keep wearing them, they'll pill less. I don't believe it goes away completely, though. That's the nature of natural fabrics. Using a lanolin based detergent helps keep the fibers from drying out too much. I like Eucalan. Always air dry, of course. My oldest Darn Toughs are around 6 years old & still kicking.
