What BIFL products have bought you your time back?
Eufy vacs have this. When emptying into the bin, there’s a circular blade that comes out and cuts the hair from the brush. Works like a charm. I have 2 shedding dogs and a family of 4. The brush on my old roomba would constantly be full of hair and cutting it out manually was f***king gross. I’ve had the Eufy for over a year and have never needed to clean the hair out out of the bristles. Game. Changer.

My vacuum died... What's the actual best budget robot vacuum under $300 right now? (US)
Our $150 Eufy is still going strong. Doesn't dock itself, doesn't empty itself, no app, and no programming. It just randomly travels around the house and picks up a lot of dirt and pet hair. It will do 1,500 sq ft but must be emptied 3-4 times to do so. After, we always clean the roller brush, wheels, and bin. Don't get the newer model with only one "arm" and brush. It doesn't work nearly as well.

What have you used the most at home these two years?
Our aeropress gets a lot of use and also comes on trips with us. I prefer it to French press since it’s filtered and quicker to make. We have a Eufy robot vacuum that has been used daily for the last 5 years and is still going strong. Not cleaning or food related, but our most used thing in our home is probably our record player. We don’t have a TV on our main floor, so we’re constantly playing music, and records have been a fun hobby to get into.

Wired doorbell\video camera that doesn't require a subscription?
I bought a Eufy after getting rid of my ring for many reasons and now I am looking to buy an extra battery because my hard wiring doesn't keep it charged for some reason. I have to repeatedly take to the top of it to take out the battery and charge it and every time I do I feel like the plastic encasing will break. Everything about it is great I just don't like this not being able to hardwire it they said you could hardwire it and I followed all the directions and redid it three times and not able to get it to charge the battery and I got to constantly keep pulling it off and charging it and I was looking just to get another battery to have one charged so I could switch it out and I don't have to go whole day with out coverage or forgetting to put it back on which really isn't going to work when and if I go on vacation. So I think I might be looking at the real link that was one of the choices that I was up against and I don't remember why I picked the Eufy. Hooking it to my existing chime didn't work which I was fine with I went ahead and forked out the money for the extra time that you plug in but now to buy a battery on top of it is just feeling like maybe i didn't make the best choice

If you had $300 for your kitchen, what would you buy that lasts?
A basic vacuum robot costs about $100, so 3 times the money should get a very good value one. My ex whom I used to live with had bought a eufy one which I used to tend to. We always had clean floors, good vacuum robots are amazing, but they're not paid cleaning personnel, you have to tend to them.

eufy has been working for me for a while. I wanted something that has good quality with easy setup because I'm lazy even though I'm a tech guy. You can access them from your phone and control them or watch prior recorded videos, can store on microsd on the cameras themselves or to a homebase that you could put a harddrive in. You can turn on an ssl like mode for encryption but I don't like the idea of making all the videos encrypted. If someone swiped the camera with microsd you would lose the recordings but for peace of mind for me when I leave home and want to check in on my cat and that someone hasn't broken into my house, it works wonderfully and the newer cameras (non solar) are very clear. I am unsure if you can disable updates on them, and for long term use what happens multiple generations down the line though.

People just not into spending time on research. I found this company called eufy. I can put a sd card in the cameras and sat back and enjoyed my subscription free cameras. Then I got a few more and decided to buy their homebase (it can hold 2.5 ssd or 2.5 hdd). My camera footage last for about 2 months from 4 cameras running 24/7. Eufy system aint even complicated. Just plug in the camera and connect to wifi.

Eufy without their subscription service has been nice for us. Initially used Blink but 24 hour recording is better for us. Customer service is good too. We had one camera where video was pink and one with low resolution on one corner I think and they took care of it right away even though it wasn’t installed until months after purchase. Haven’t had an issue since and stores for a long time with the included hard drive.

This is where normies meet the enthusiast crowd. Those cameras with cloud subscriptions, not owning your own data etc, those are the tradeoffs you take for being able to set up a relatively simple camera system. The alternative (and there are many) is to research different IP camera brands and NVRs, see which ones aren't designed to be trapped in one company's eco system, and most importantly, let you store your footage data wherever you want, not just the limited local storage OR their cloud storage subscription. A good system will let you send that footage ANYWHERE. Whether it be a NAS, the 3rd HDD inside your NVR, an S3 bucket of your choosing, hell, even Google Drive if you wanted to. Something like Home Assistant would be the complete nuclear response to your issue, as it is as open ended as it gets. The issue with it is that it's highly technical if you want to actually set up a self hosted server for your recordings. The closest thing I've found to being noob friendly, yet allowing freedom is the Eufy camera ecosystem (by Anker). You can set up a "home base" that can hold something up to like 4 or 5 HDDs, and on top of that, you have the freedom to route your footage to other places too (S3, your own network storage server, etc), for free. They also have a cloud subscription (that doesn't seem too pricey), but the whole idea of their system is they give YOU the freedom to run everything independently from the internet if you so choose to.

It's infuriating, but also predictable: SaaS everything has even hit home security. For real BIFL gear, I’d recommend Reolink, Eufy, or UniFi Protect. None of them lock you into the cloud, all your footage stays yours, without recurring fees

What are you running? I have Wyze, Tapo and Eufy, and none have subscriptions. All of them have microsd cards with continuous recording, except the battery cams don't have continuous recording. The downside to not having a subscription for the Wyze cams is that the cloud video is short and there's a gap between those videos, and I think it's the same for the other brands. That's not a big deal for me because I can view the continuous video on the microsd card from the app to see everything. I suppose another downside could be that if someone broke into the house they could also take the memory cards, but that's a risk I'm willing to accept. Some brands have a hub that can hold the videos, and the hub can be stored in a more secure location, so that's an option if I want to mitigate the stolen memory card risk.

My Eufy cameras only start recording when motion triggered based on my settings. It's stored to an internal micro sd card that will overwrite when it eventually fills up. I pay no monthly fee and just bought the camera. It's incorporated into my Google Home app but also runs on its own app. It has night vision, but that only works well when it's not up against a glass window. I can set a range of motion detection to keep it from going off when cars drive by on my road.

Eufy, Reolink, Dahua, Lorex, Hikvision, Vivotek, Amcrest, basically anything that either has a NVR or takes microSD cards. It'd be shorter to list which cameras are cloud-only because there's not many. The main reason people buy them is because they're significantly cheaper exactly, and they're significantly cheaper because the companies rely on cloud storage subscriptions to make up the cost.

my solution isnt high tech. 5ish years ago i bought my parents the eufy doorbell camera. mainly to see when amazon drops my moms packages off. no subscription needed. it has a receiver part that plugs in, in the house that has a sd card slot. stores all the files on it. my dad also has the app. you can also add their cameras to the same system. ( video doorbell C210 kit) personally i have a night owl system set up 4 cams that record and save to a hard drive system. kinda like a cctv system. its about 7 years old its wifi cameras night vision. we use an old monitor run to hdmi to the hard drive to see the cams all the time. system cost $200.. possb $300 at sams club. it has an app i can use as well. when the hd gets full it sends me an alert and if theres nothing i dont need to keep i just reformat.

What's this "we" schitt? I bought a Eufy base unit + doorbell + second camera for the back of the house, and added a TB (or maybe half TB) SSD to the base unit - all storage local, no subscription fees, free app for my phone. There are plenty of other brands that give you the same options, but I was familiar with this brand as the parent company of Anker (or some such relationship) and have been impressed/happy with the build quality of other Anker hardware over the past few years. Very happy with the system; whole setup was well under US$500.

Because it works better. 0 experience needed to set up. Apps simplify everything. The issue is when the Chinese company breaks their free app and decides to shut down their servers, what do you do? Most cameras don't offer a true video feed - they are hard coded to talk to the NVR device or their remote servers, who then talk to you via the app. Reolink has many cameras that work outside their NVR and I believe eufy do as well, but companies like nest and Wyse prevent it by every means necessary 'deliberately crippling their hardware' as you put it. It's a camera by camera tech spec search. I can cancel the internet and my cameras will still notify my phone on any triggers, because I did the research and went with a one cost bifl configuration. The cameras do still fail though, electronics in all weather conditions aren't any guarantee of longevity. To get them working over the Internet requires either a domain, tunnel, or ddns service which is outside a lot of people's wheelhouses to configure *and maintain*. It's not a set up and forget event as I *presume* most people want their camera feeds consistently secure, and security is always evolving... The subscription is simply easier.

I have cameras and doorbells from Eufy and they don’t require a monthly fee. It was my first search criteria when I was looking. They’re not the best tech, but there’s no subscription. I think if you’re super serious about security, you could have a closed network system that’s more robust and BIFL, but I’d expect some higher startup costs.

The main thing that I worry about with Eufy is that, one day, they'll shut off their central system that the cameras and the app connect through. The other thing I worry about with Eufy is that since everything connects through their central server, I suspect the CCP can check my cameras whenever they feel like it. So I wouldn't use them if the CCP might be interested in my whereabouts, or if I had friends/guests who were potential CCP targets. And I wouldn't use it inside my home. But maybe the CCP aspect is what will prevent them from ever shutting off their central server. I will say this: when I bought my first Eufy cam, there were some major usability problems. I contacted Eufy and provided them the info on the issues, and a couple weeks later they rolled out firmware updates that solved both of my problems.

Yeah, 3rd vote for eufy. I only have outdoor cameras and the HomeKit or whatever it is called is more than adequate for my basic security needs with zero subscription costs. Add some of the little solar panels on it and it’s pretty much maintenance-free, too.

I got a eufy for this reason. It comes with a local server you connect to your router. I will say the server crapped out on me (I think from an electric surge from brown outs), and so this is also not BIFL. But at least no monthly fees!

With the same values in mind, and after a ton of research I ended up going with Eufy as other have mentioned. I now have several cameras, doorbell, and motion light with a homebase3. I will say they work well and are very clear nice quality cameras. The app's a little glitchy and quirky sometimes but overall the cams work well, and at the end of the day I'm the one controlling my data.

I see the Ethernet as a plus. They use Power over Ethernet, so you never have to worry about changing batteries. And being able to draw more power means they're "always recording", when they detect something you can have it include the 10 seconds beforehand, which I don't think you can do with a Ring/Eufy/etc. The 4K quality is also fantastic. I even have optical zoom on mine.

Eufy is subscription free. You can pay for storage and whatnot if you want but it’s not a requirement.

Moved to Eufy cameras about a year ago. All storage is local here on their HomeBase 3 boxes. No monthly. The subscriptions are to cover things like cloud storage. They aren't rigging anything. Most people just don't want to deal with that side of it.

I spent like $100 on a Eufy C15 max or something like that (forget the exact designation) and, although it uses dumb bounce-navigation instead of the lidar i'd typically prefer, it's far exceeded the low expectations I had, and has cut down on our need to constantly pull out the 'real' vacuum. Have two dogs and one of them seemingly sheds enough weekly to be able knit a sweater from it. Run it every day in the early evening and it does fine, gets under beds and couches well too. Only really complaint is that it can get trapped in rooms pretty easily if doors arent fully propped open, but thats due to the dumb navigation and at the price point I knew what I'd be getting haha. Been happy enough with it that it's made me really want to explore the better/fancier robot vacuums and see what else they're capable of, something with self-cleaning and mopping would be stellar - all wood floors - but hard to justify the $500-$2000 splurge on a nice robovac that has all that

Eufy X10 Pro Omni - this thing is a tank. I have three of them in my house, with one running in the basement on rough concrete floor, and none have yet to fail. All of the accessories, including the battery, are easily replaceable.

I've had irobot, eufey, and roborock. None of them stopped working. They did get louder with time cause plastic parts, but they still worked the same. I don't see why you are having so many issues.

I've been rocking the same Eufy for about 7 years now. I have kids and dogs and I run it every day. I do a deep clean probably once a week to keep it running smooth.

Do smart home items really work in long term?
Most smart items I’ve bought have lasted considerably past the point of “I wish they would fail so I could justify upgrading to new tech.” My original Ring doorbell and cameras are going on 8 years old. My first Kasa outlets are going on six years (did replace some when doing other outlets). Upgraded smart locks for new tech, old one went to MiL’s house and is 10+ years old. Original Ecobee going on nearly 10 years old. Our original Roomba was probably the biggest new tech casualty - good and bad, it worked just as well brand new as it did 8 years later. I couldn’t justify buying a top Roborock while my Roomba was still kicking, so I ended up with a Eufy like 70% off - barely smart but it is so much quieter and does an awesome job cleaning.

Items that made your life so much easier/saved time?
1. Eufy robot vac. I got a dumb one that just boops around/doesn't map your house. I haaaate vacuuming, but I run it 2x a week and do a manual vacuum once a month now 2. I live in an apartment without a dishwasher so I bought a tabletop dishwasher and it saves so much time and water! (Only 5 litres/wash) The two combined have changed my life. I've had both for 6 years each and only replaced the robovac battery once ($25)

BIFL 2024 Holiday Gift Ideas Thread! - Gifts for men!
Not sure what kind of fashion he’s into, but if he collects sneakers, the Nike Jordans are pretty cool. Anyone at a store that sells them would give a good recommendation. A Pendleton blanket might be up his alley. Or something from Norrona if he is the Boulder/outdoorsy type. If he likes fishing, he could probably use a good lure or a kayak. If he is somewhere that has a pool, my younger cousin got this blow up float that you can play beer pong on that he LOVES. Or you could go the “you need this appliance route.” An Eufy robot vacuum would run a little over $100 on Amazon and was my 21 stepdaughter’s favorite gift this year. Some nice knives could also be a winner or a really soft plush throw blanket.
