  Happily, Patagonia remains great. Other excellent brands I’ve found include Evergoods backpacks/bags, the Point 6 socks mentioned above, Wigwam socks, and Unbound clothing.

  Backpack suggestions?

  If you’re using it for school, Swissgear makes affordable, versatile backpacks with a lot of pockets for one thing or the next. I had one that lasted me 10 years before starting to rip. Ogio makes really good backpacks for office and school too. Mines lasted 5 years so far with a good amount of abuse and weight. But I find their stuff to be more expensive. There are plenty of other options that make more specialized backpacks. Outdoor/travel brands: osprey, north face, Cotopaxi. Travel specific: aer, tortuga, matador, evergoods,: the list goes on. I find these aesthetic but I think I would have preferred the extra pockets and all where I find these other brands make really nice bags for large compartments with some organization pockets that might be good for minimal use of office supplies and more packing space. Some of the smaller commuter backpacks might be good to use for school. But I still love my Ogio renegade for standard use with way too many pockets. I have a glasses case on top for my safety glasses. Two zip pockets on each side for everyday carry stuff. Water bottle pockets. One of the water bottle pockets holds zip ties and twisty ties. Laptop and folders of course. Main pocket holds all my bulky stuff. Two secondary pockets: one holds all my Office supplies. The other holds flatter objects that I need separated from everything else for one reason or the next. Unfortunately this is padded which you don’t like.

  The Best Backpacks for Travel Available Now?

  Evergoods has some good stuff that's well constructed and pretty well thought out. Main downside are price and that their back material isn't great in warm climates.

  The Best Backpack Today?

  Been pretty happy with my Able Carry Daily Plus for every day use. I also have a smaller Evergoods. Both are built very well. I live in the city without a car and I'm constantly hauling heavy groceries or getting caught in rain with the Able Carry and it is really solid, but low profile and fits under a plane seat.

  Can't decide on a backpack

  Have you looked at Evergoods? I think you can get them sent there? Maybe not from their site but there are resellers. CTB 26 would fit the bell well. 35 might be too big based on your requirements. They do pretty well in rain but if you get caught in a deluge you may just want to find a waterproof bag cover you can slap over it really quick, regardless of the bag.

  A new or lesser known brand you're trying, hoping it becomes BIFL-ish

  I really like Evergoods backpacks so far. I got a backpack from them 2 years ago and while it hasn’t seen extreme use, it’s held up well and it’s solved my backpack problem. I just picked up a duffel and some organizing products from them so we’ll see what those are like!
