  How Did America’s BIFL Culture Die Here… But Thrive in Japan?

  As a lifelong vintage collector, I noticed in the 80s and 90s many Japanese consumers focused on collecting American-made brands. All the classic brands many of us take for granted (Levis is a good example) they were buying up, so much so that the Levis company actually sold their original loom to a Japanese buyer, and to my knowledge, the first production runs of Evisu jeans were made of denim from that loom. I used to live next to the original Levis building and it looked neglected and boarded up. So much for respecting an American heritage brand... This was around the time Levis was mass producing in China. Anyhoos, because Japan's market collecting American brands was booming, many US vintage sellers would sell their goods straight to the Japanese market because they will pay top dollar for our goods. On a side note, I worked with a retailer selling used US military uniforms, and we could not move our basic made in the USA coats and jackets to US consumers. However we had a few buyers from Japan that would visit a few times a year and buy out our stock. Many buyers just value a brand name or cheap priced goods unfortunately, while the Japanese consumer respects the details and quality.

  Kapital, Pure Blue Japan, Japan Blue, Samurai Jeans, graphzero, Full Count, Momotaro Jeans, Oni Denim, Evisu, TCB, etc. Basically any manufacturer that [Denimio](https://www.denimio.com/en_US/home/) would carry. All made in Japan. Many based in Kojima, some in Osaka. If Naked and Famous has something novel, you can give it a try. Tate and Yoko’s shop is in Montreal, however, they do not have a friendly exchange-return policy. Be aware when ordering.

  BIFL, but also BISecondhand. What are some things that everyone should keep an eye out for, but can commonly be found for cheap when preowned.

  Jeans. I don’t think I’ve paid more than $25 for a pair of jeans in the last 10 years, I look out for Levi’s, Diesel and Evisu jeans in charity shops.
