You want a metal shank right at the core of the boot, brass or steel, because anything lighter goes soft far too quickly... and once that happens you feel it every step. Start with the stuff that actually keeps boots alive, not whatever the brand’s marketing team prints on the tag. Full grain lether is what you’re after, while anything marked corrected or polished is usually covering up weaker patches in the hide. Look for a stitched welt, either Goodyear or Blake, because cemented soles are usually the first part to fail and when they do the whole boot is basically done for and there's not much to be done once that happens the whole thing just keeps getting worse without warning. A proper welt means you can resole them without the boot collapsing around it. Inside lining should be real leather, since microfiber feels fine for a while but cracks far sooner than you’d like. Fairfax and Favor meet some of these points, but the quality drifts a bit and you’re paying more for the style than the structure. If you want real durability, Spanish makers like Valverde del Camino are worth a look, with far less fuss and far better boots.

UK brand Fairfax and Favor! Classic, large selection in finishes, colours and sizes, free sjipping worldwide. Handsewn, and great quality. My navy suede tote bag still looks brand new after having been used at least a couple of times a week for the past five years.
