  Same, Feather blades are my favorite. Tried out a multi-pack and the Feathers never tugged or nicked me. They also keep their edge longer and I can get a couple of shaves before having to change the blade. I bought a bulk pack and feel like it will last me the rest of my life.

  I second the leaf btw. I use it to shave my head and I've never had a nick. Pair it with some feather blades and it's the best shave ever. Plus I only use half the blade at a time, so double the savings. It's definitely paid for itself 4 times over easily

  What’s a small upgrade you made that ended up being way more impactful than expected?

  Refillable 5 gallon water jug dispenser in the kitchen. Refill it at the grocery store, excellent quality filtered water, not wasting a bunch of plastic, 10/10 recommended. Safety razor and Feather razor blades with a decent soap. I like Mitchell's woolfat, but you do you man. Cheap, not wasting a bunch of plastic, excellent quality shave. A cheap little cargo cage for my pickup truck bed. Makes throwing groceries back there much better, you don't have to worry about them rolling around on the way home. People are going to hate on me for this, but YouTube premium. I use it four or five times as much as any other streaming service I pay for, and it comes with the music service as well. Definitely worth the money.

  Straight razor for personal grooming

  Check out Dovo or Feather - both solid brands that'll last forever if you take care of them. Just know there's a learning curve and you'll need a strop too

  I have a safety razor (Merkur 33c if I remember right). Used it for 5 years no, with Feather blades (the sharpest, the less irritant they are for my skin). There is no sign of aging on the razor.

  PSA: Please refrain from making posts about inherently consumable products that last you a long time because of sporadic use and not quality.

  I mean I use a feather ss safety razor, and the entire reason I bought it is because the cheap one I go rusted in just a couple weeks. This one is built not to rust, and the blades are propriatary, but they give a better shave and last a long time. I bought 1 pack of 20 blades in early 2022 and have yet to buy another.

  Posted the same. I think the razor was like 88 bucks. “High end” Feather double edge razors is under $20 for 50. I use one blade a week (only using two halves, since 3 is too close for my head). Superior shave for a fraction of the price.

  It's /r/wicked_edge btw. Their wiki has a good guide, and my advice to OP would be to try a few different blades (Personna, Astra, Feather, etc) before buying a 100-pack

  That list looks good. OP, shaving is a personal thing. What works for me might not work for you. And it's also a skill. How I shave now is different than it was when I was Lea experienced with a DE safety razor. And everyone has different things to say about blades. Note that different blades will feel different in different handles. My .02 is to get the merkur 34c and a multi brand pack of razors. But make sure you get some feather blades as well. This is a good, affordable start. The merkur Is plated so it's not guaranteed bifl. But it is a very good choice. It's quite well balanced and sized. I have more expensive bifl options that simple don't shave as well.

  > Like someone else commented, could have been the blade, people recommend Feather as the sharpest on the market. I bought a hundred Personna Med Prep years and years ago and I'm still using them. I've been shaving with a safety razor for 11 years now, bought one on Amazon that came with a pack of Super-Max Platinum blades but I also bought some Feather blades with it as well. When I ran out of the Feather blades, I tried the blades that came with the razor and I found that they were a decent amount sharper, it was almost like erasing the hair instead of cutting it. The only downside is that as far as I can tell they don't keep their edge as long as Feather blades. I think I bought 100 of the Super-Max blades a year or two ago and they should last me for a very long time as I have a beard and only shave my cheeks and my neck, but if I ever manage to run out of them I'll give the Feather blades a try again.

  I have a Merkur 34c handle and I bought 100 feather blades like 10 years ago and still have about a dozen left. I shave part of my face (I have a goatee) about 1 time a week. I’ll change out my blade every 5 or so shaves. I bought a brush and bowl when I got my razor, but now I’ll use just regular Barbasol shave foam from a can, rub it on, shave once over with the grain, then rinse. I’ll go back over against the grain in short back and forth movements. Baby butt smooth, no razor bumps and it only takes 2-3 minutes total, including clean up. Best part is I only have spent about $30 on shaving since that initial purchase.

  It very much goes to technique: 1) Prep. Get your beard wet. 2) Lather up with a brush. You’re looking for a loose wet lather, not stiff like whipped cream. 3) Use multiple passes. 4) Start with the direction your beard grows, with short scrubbing strokes. 5) Next, go against the grain, with short scrubbing strokes. 6) Finally, go across the grain with long strokes. There are a couple of tricks for sensitive spots like on your neck, for instance: turning the blade in arcs. There are a few good videos on YouTube. The trick is to never push hard enough to fold skin into the blade. Think shaving a balloon. I use Feather blades, but they’re scary sharp to start with. They last dozens of shaves, and give you a wonderfully smooth shave.

  Like someone else commented, could have been the blade, people recommend Feather as the sharpest on the market. I bought a hundred Personna Med Prep years and years ago and I'm still using them. Could also be the angle you were holding the razor at, if the blade edge was a bit away from your skin it might want to pull. Or the most common one would be prep, it's really important to take a shower first, or at least use a hot towel for a few minutes. It's part of why the whole routine with the soap and brush is effective, gives the lather more time to soften the hair up a bit. If you're interested in giving it another shot there's definitely ways to solve that problem, and big communities online that love to help.

  I bought a Merkur Futur razor, and disposable feather brand blades. The blades come to pennies each. I usually replace the blade each use - really satisfying to have a new blade each time. Used to spend way too much on disposable Gillettes - made the change over 15 years ago & never looked back.

  15 years ago I bought a Merkur barber pole razor and 100 feather blades for 120 bucks. I shave 3 times a week. I still have a years worth of blades left. Go the safety razor route. There’s a bit of a learning curve but once you got it down you’ll get the best shave.

  Feather, Japanese brand. The most precise made razor I’ve used. Gives a close perfect shave. It’s got no slack when it’s put together. But you do pay a premium for it.

  I have a beard and pretty much only shave some of my neck. I've tried several safety razors and my favorite one is the Parker semi-slant paired with Feather blades. There is a bit of a learning curve, but if you go slow, you will get the hang of it.

  Some of my favorite BIFL EDC items.

  About ten years ago I bought a FEATHER double edge razor. Crazy expensive at that time for $100. I can get a weeks shave with one blade and it's so smooth it glides over my face. Seldom/never a cut of any type. It's no longer cheap to shave but $25 for a box of 100 blades will last me two years.

  Is shaving my face with a razor a bad idea?

  Just get a normal double edged safety razor, and some blades. I use Feather blades. I think my handle is Merkur or something, but lots of brands make good razor handles. They'll all last a really long time unless you send them through the laundry or something. Shaving doesn't make hair grow back faster, but stubble does feel rough. So the skin feels really smooth when freshly shaved and then starts to feel really rough as the hair grows back. As the hair grows out it feels less rough. Plus a lot of people's anecdotes are from puberty when their body hair was increasing anyways. If you get used to shaving every day, and then ten years later decide to stop, it's likely to be a shocking change. Same amount of hair regardless of whether you shave or not, you just get used to it looking and feeling one way.

  Beware the Feather blades. Shaper than a scalpel. But if you can handle it, they're the best blades I've ever used. In any case, never cheap out on blades. It'll be like using an old bic and hurt like hell.

  it depends on the brand, some DE blades come in in a plastic thing (usually the case with feathers and personas and Wilkinsons) and some (like shark, vokoshod, astra) come in a cardboard box - Usually if you buy in bulk (i.e. 100 blades of the same brand like Astras) you get long cardboard tube full of lots of the small cardboard packs of those

  BIFLers, what things do you not understand why people spend their money on?

  For razor blades, get a sampler pack. Any shaving place will sell them, and they're so cheap that you can get a lot of samples for little money, and it's not a big deal if you don't finish the pack.  Every face is different and everyone has different preferences. For example, feather is great, but I have a tendency to cut myself with them. Derby always feels like I'm tugging hairs. Astra ended up being a good middle ground for me. Bought a lifetime supply for $30, 10 years ago.  So try out a bunch until you find one you really like.

  Merkur and Feather are quality products. Not sure if BIFL but Henson has a safety razor that takes some of the pressure of the razor off your skin if prone to nicking yourself.

  What is the best old school safety razor and spare blades? Price isn't a concern unless it's something absolutely ridiculous.

  I've had the Merkur 34c for about ten years now and it's still amazing. I've run Top, Shark, Voskhod, and Feather blades. Of all the blades the Feather were the best IMO. I also run a "badger" brush (not sure it's really badger) and Taylor's of Old Bond Street shaving cream. I have tried a few other handles but I keep going back to the 34c. I wish I could find a butterfly action that's as solid as the Merkur.
