  Swiss army knife and a good flashlight like an OLIGHT or Fenix... Also a good lighter. Zippo is a BIFL... Depends where you are going if it get cold a stormy kromer hat. If it's warm, some sort of hat for warm weather (sorry no opinion)

  What’s a purchase that’s not fun, not flashy but now you swear by it?

  My Fenix headlamp. I lived in an area that had frequent power outages so I needed a headlamp. After several years and multiple headlamps, I revised that to "I needed a headlamp *that lasts.*" Every brand I tried suffered from some sort of design defect. They all seem to take three triple-a batteries. They all seem to have faulty switches that just stop working after a while. They all seem to have faulty contacts or wiring on the battery terminals that makes it so you have to constantly slap the headlamp to get it to work. They either have a protection circuit that makes them turn off randomly or worse, no protection circuit that makes the batteries explode. Then there was the one that might have been ok electronically but we'll never know because it was held together by an adhesive that reacts with the salt in sweat and literally eats through the wires and plastic turning the whole thing into a gelatinous, smouldering mess. Eventually I figured there must be some communities where crappy headlamps would not be tolerated so I researched on subreddits for law-enforcement, spelunking, and stage-hands and that's when I heard about Fenix. They aren't cheap but if I had just bought one of those first, I would have still saved money. My HP25R is going on ten years old and it has never had any problems. It even survived a high-speed impact when I spastically accidentally flung it at the pavement by trying to get a wasp out of my hair while I was riding my bike. Not a scratch. It's made out of a single block of high-grade aluminum so I can't even tell where it got hit.

  Fenix definitely makes great headlamps, I totally agree. And I didn't realise they had replaceable bulbs, that's an awesome feature.  I think with a small amount of care most headlamps can be a pretty BIFL item for most people though, so I don't think it's necessarily a bad choice for people to buy something based on their priorities, rather than the absolute single most bombproof construction available. For example, the solid construction of Fenix lights does make them a bit heavy, and they're generally a little less comfortable to wear than some other options, so I've been sticking with my little BD headlamps for ultras, but there are lots of different options which work for different people

  But the headlamp itself… Solid metal. Changeable bulb (so you can get the light temperature you want and replace them as needed). And waaaaaaaay more light (on even the medium setting) than any BD headlamp. Fenix headlamps for running (camping) are based on the ones for all-night construction workers ans first responders, but lighter and balances. When you hold a Fenix and a BD or Petzl in your hand, the difference is obvious and vast.

  A true BIFL headlamp would be something that uses a 18650 battery, like the Fenix HM65R-T.

  What’s the best flashlight for an appliance repair guy

  I can say without a shadow of a doubt you want a fenix. I have both a magnetic base and a headlamp. I use the headlamp 4-8 hours a day Monday through Friday for the past eight years. The mag base maybe 1-2 hours a day. This headlamp in particular is the one you want.   Brands you swear by that have Buy It For Life quality products

  Interesting. Out of 75 coworkers, none have had an O-Light fail in 5 years, and prior to that only from extraordinary falls. I'll agree their website is quite a trip and they seem to be doing a lot more endorsement now versus when I got my first headlight from them. I've been guilty of leaving them on in my pocket a lot and never had an issue other than being hot to the touch, but still usable. Seen enough Streamlights melt or explode within a year, or just from snow, if any of the fasteners actually stay in them that long before falling out. I haven't bought a new light in 2 years ish, so maybe their quality has crapped out, but Streamlights was never there to begin with. I had really good luck with my Fenix lights but I know they're a crapshoot.
