  I picked up a Filson Mackinaw jacket about 5 years ago, and I cannot imagine a wool jacket that is more durable. I genuinely don't think you could damage it without making a concerted effort that employed heavy-duty shears and/or a blow torch.

  I drive Toyotas, my watches are seiko and my denim is Japanese. In terms of Filson, made at filson > made in USA > imported. Just the way the build quality is. Not to say the imports are not also great, but there is palpable difference in quality. Why else would filson themselves indicate “made at filson (Seattle)” vs “made in US”

  Yeah the canvas tin cloth quality is really exceptional. I can’t tell between my MiUS field coat and imported tin cloth cruiser and tin cloth primaloft. I think the wool stuff with more buttons and trim is where the build quality is more noticeable. But who cares? It’s still great and works for me.

  I have a Filson shirt that I bought in 1998, before my fieldwork began. It’s still with me and holding up great. Some of my other older filson items are holding up just as well. The new stuff is hit or miss, I did just get a thick flannel from them and it appears to be very high quality. Nice collection you have there!

  Dehen 1920, WeatherWool, and Darn Tough are 100% still absolutely uncompromising BIFL clothing. I can reasonably say Filson still is BIFL based on about 10 items I've bought over the last 3 years.

  Anyone tried the Filson Wool Jack-Shirt?

  Filson sizing honestly varies product to product. Each one of their garments usually has a unique ‘sizing’ link so check all of the ones you’re interested in. I wear a lot of Filson and sometime shit fits and some times it doesn’t. Which is super frustrating, but I really like their stuff. It holds up better than other brands I’ve tried like LC King’s pants are falling apart and my dry tin-cloth pants ares till going strong. I love my guide shirts and my cruiser jacket.

  Faherty Brand Flannels?

  Yeah I've had similar issues with Faherty - the pilling is real and for that price point it's pretty disappointing. Their marketing game is strong but the actual quality doesn't match the hype imo Filson is solid though, those things are tanks. Have you tried any Portuguese Flannel? Way better value and the quality is actually there

  Faherty Brand Flannels?

  I’ve bought many of their shirts and pants and I don’t find the value for the price they demand. They are nice clothes don’t get my wrong but they don’t hold up for very long. The flannels seem to pill and kinda bunch up in spots. I know everyone has their own preferences, but I do really like my filson flannels.

  I work outside in Texas all year, and 100% of my socks are wool blends. Even the thick ones are never too hot. In fact, the more wool content they have, the less hot they feel. I cringe when I think about what my cotton socks felt and smelled like before I switched to wool, especially in the dead of summer. As for your OP, yeah, some brands are way better than others in both quality of fur (wool) and workmanship. I personally would not buy wool stuff from the places you mentioned above. They might be cute or stylish off If you want to "invest" in a high-quality garment that will last, then there are several "buy once, cry once" brands with beautiful and durable sweaters. When I feel my Filson ($$$$), Pendleton ($$$), and Schaefer Outfitters ($$) wool outerwear against my wife's Old Navy ($) wool peacoat, the difference in feel/scratchiness is VERY noticeable. There are several UK/EU brands that make reasonably affordable and very attractive sweaters, with the best all-around probably being Aran.

  I’m also. Neurodivergent but I typically don’t have issues with clothing. You’ve made me wonder if that could be exacerbating the issue though. Maybe I’m noticing the scratchiness more than most other people would.  I’ll look into Filson brand, thanks for the recommendation!

  A few things that I would recommend: 1) If you expect to do a bunch of weekend trips - a Filson Duffel bag, 2) Not sure which 3D printer you already have, but a Bambu might be a great upgrade, 3) Full Cordless Tool Set, 4) Handmade boots or Solovair boots, 5) 2 year subscription for Cursor Pro or similar, 6) Nice professional jacket that you can use to level up your outfits for prof/faculty events or interviews. Anything you can do to invest in yourself is the best. Until you start making real money, I wouldn’t divert your money into savings. Keep your tools up to date so you are not limited by the tool.

  You could say the same about Filson. Both companies have a few signature items that they've always built well and continue to be build well. LL Bean and Filson both make a lot of strange overpriced junk that is a result of private equity boards. Things like the river diver shirt, classic barn coat or maine guide parka are still as good. Filson moved tin cloth cruiser production to Bangladesh, they are still solid. Their MiUSA stuff is solid. What you can't say about these brands is that their entire catalog is solid like you could have back in the day.

  Wool coat for the Northeast

  You need to examine what kind of coat you want for the temperatures. It gets really where you are so there are a few styles that can work well: 1. Technical jackets with down insulation - Think canada goose, Fjallraven, Patagonia, and Rudsak. These jackets can last a long time if you buy their higher end jackets. Over time you might find wear in the seams and you can bring it to a good tailor for repair. My gf has had hers for 15 years and its still going, I see small wear and will bring it to a tailor sooner or later. 2. Wool jackets - Wool is a classic coat but will not be as insulating as your down choices. There are many styles of these coats that range from a peacoat to Filson style Cruiser jackets - Schott, Filson, Stormy Kromer, Weatherwool. These jackets last a long time and keep you fairly warm and theyll hold up just as well as the technical jacket but theyre a different style. layering is a must with these jackets IMO when its brick outside. 3. Shearling style jackets - These jackets offer a similar warmth to the wool jacket and relies on wool and leather. Certainly a different style for the Northwest but itll keep you very warm. Being leather, its the most expensive choice if you go with genuine sherling instead of polyester and cotton. N-1 Deck are a style of sherling jackets are very warm and you can find them from Buzz Rickson, The Real McCoys, Iron Heart. Schott also sells different styles of shearling jackets that you should look at Golden Bear is another company that does Shearling. All of these jackets can last a long time with enough care, the technical jackets needing the lesat amount of care to the wool and then finally the shearling which requires the most care. I think you have good choices and when it comes down to it, its about price and style. Used models of all the above are found on marketplace to ebay to grailed/depop/vinted.

  PLEASE Help me find the perfect toiletry/dopp bag for my boyfriend

  Yeah, my husband has started doing leather crafting as a hobby, and even getting scraps and samples adds up! And the amount of time it takes?! I honestly need everyone who is able to learn at least one fibre art or craft of some kind so they understand the time and labour that goes into making things. I sew, knit, and do woodwork (can do metal, too, but don’t do it often), and my husband does woodwork, now metal, and can also crochet (v jealous, I’m trying to learn lol). It easily took me 40+ hours to make myself a gown. 50 hours to make my daughter’s DOLL a knit sweater (“how hard could it be????”). We really don’t adequately understand labour, and while that’s intentional overall (capitalism), it absolutely needs to be understood when people are buying things for the long haul. Not everything expensive is high-quality, but new, high-quality pieces are *definitely* going to cost more if the people making them are compensated fairly. All that to say, I think Filson Dryden was a great alternative recommendation!

  Need new wardrobe. Do I go LL Bean, Filson, Patagonia, Huckleberry? Main goal is to last a long time.

  I feel like I know your style from the list and it’s the same as mine. I used to have quite a bit of LL Bean and Patagonia, and a few more technical brands like Black Diamond. I now have a closet that is almost entirely Filson, with just a bit of Fjallraven in there too. I couldn’t be happier with it and it covers everything I need except some very dressy occasions. For reference, I am late twenties, spend half my working time in an office and the other half in the mountains and traveling to remote areas (for work). Also, there’s nothing wrong with having nearly everything from one brand. Some people have brand loyalty when products don’t let them down. I worked for a lumbermill right out of high school and ended learning about Filson from the guys I worked with. They lasted longer than my Carharrts so I always kept a few Filson jackets for work. Now I use their stuff for just about all areas of life, with the lightweight Alaska guide shirts being my office button downs (as an example).

  Why is it so hard to find well-made clothes that aren't insanely priced?

  On one hand I've had a Uniqlo wool crew neck sweater for like 8 years that I paid 40 bucks for. 100% got my money worth. On another hand I have Filson brand wool sweater knit in the UK with wool from a sheep's first shearing. Also a sweater from Merz B Schwanen with merino and cashmere in the blend, knit in Portugal. I would rate both as extremely good quality. Both were around 300. You don't need to pay 700 for a sweater. And tbh a sweater isn't really a good candidate for buying for life. My Filson sweater I've worn really hard, hunting, camping, skiing, as well as casually. I've begun to have to do some darning on it and eventually it will wear out. Knitwear is not inherently durable IMO.

  Filson waxed canvas, they call it tin cloth, was all I wore in SE alaska where we got 13 feet of rain a year. That place made where I grew up near Seattle seem like a desert. They also survived everything I threw at them as far as abuse, felling trees for firewood, pushing through devils club and alder tickets etc.

  I agree with you OP. I also agree with all the people explaining why handmade things are so expensive. I do wish the commonly available options, from popular or common brands, were still decent quality, and not made of plastic and purposely designed to fall apart in a year or two. It can definitely be hard to find middle of the road options, between the $30 pants that need to be replaced every year, and the $200 dollar hand made in Japan options. I find a lot of times paying $75 for something I'm still unsure if it'll fall apart in 2 years anyway. The best solution I've found is used or vintage. A lot of old made in America stuff was fairly impressive, and can be bought fairly affordable. I love wool, so the first examples I can think of are Patagonia, LL Bean, Pendleton, Carhartt, Woolrich, Johnson Woolen Mills, Filson, but there's a lot of others. I've found I can often find vintage clothes, that look like they were hardly worn, for $20-$100 dollars and wear it for ever. I think companies like this are proof that it is possible to make clothes for the masses that last 30 years. Companies now just choose not to. I guess the answer you're looking for, OP, is greed and capitalism. :)

  Wife wants a high quality leather purse for Christmas (NOT “luxury” brands)

  Depending how feminine she wants it to look, Nick’s Handbade Boots and Filson both hand work quality leather. Filson offers a lifetime warranty and honestly Nick’s doesn’t need on. Neither specifically make purses but I own bags from both. Added bonus, Nick’s is a small, family owned company and source most or all leather from small mills in the US.

  Don't underestimate the power of a wool sweater and layers. My husband is a door installer. Coats and jackets get in his way. On a normal winter day 20⁰-30⁰F he does wool base layer, work tee and a wool filson vest. Colder days he adds wool base layer bottoms and will often add multiple layers under his work clothes. Don't forget a wool hat to lock in lost heat. If he really needs to be warmer he will add a hoodie and/or a water-resistant shell. Me? I'm a down jacket gal and when it gets too cold for my cheapy down jacket ($20 Eddie Bauer clearance from Sam's club) I pull out my LL Bean parka. Always wool hat and wool mittens. If you know someone who knits and spins and also someone who raises Husky dogs, see if your spinner will make some dog fur yarn and commission a sweater. You'll never be cold again. Rumor has it that most people who make items with dog fur cannot wear it, too hot. 😅

  I haven’t purchased any wool clothing in a long time so I’m hesitant to recommend any. I’ve got some older [Filson](https://www.filson.com/collections/outerwear) and [Woolrich](https://www.woolrich.com/us/en/) that have been great. I have more recently purchased blankets and throws from [Fairbault Mills](https://www.faribaultmill.com/collections/apparel?page=1). Their apparel section is limited but I’ve been really happy with their products. Another option is [Pendleton](https://www.pendleton-usa.com). Again, I can’t personally vouch for their products since I don’t own any but they’re been around for a hundred years so hopefully they’re doing something right.

  Not 100% what you mean by not liking plastics. Is it any synthetics or just the crinkly loud stuff? I have a couple Arcteryx jackets (Camosun, Thorsen) that would be great for upstate NY. These are down on the inside, a rugged nylon outside (but smooth not puffy), and Goretex, so waterproof. Patagonia makes similar jackets as well. You can also look at wool, either pea coats or more work coat styles like Filson. These are less inherently warm but depending on the weather and your layers will be fine. Another option would be something in waxed cotton with a wool or quilted lining or cotton duck (like Carhartt). I would really think about two jackets. One puffy “style be damned” jacket for trudging across campus in freezing rain in February and one for late fall and early spring that fits your style criteria and doesn’t need to be totally weatherproof. Would help to have an idea of budget and what you’ve seen that you like so far.

  Work jackets are tough since all clothes are a bit different and some fit better on different body types. I’ve loved my Filson jacket(s) for many years if you take care of it, it will take care of you. Bushcraft knife - Ive had and used my Dad’s Buck 192. Vanguard for at least 15 years. It’s a tank. However, I do have several winkler knives on my wish list. They’re still hand made, the quality is excellent, and the dude made all the weapons on the last of the Mohican movie. Pots and pans - can’t go wrong with All clad and Le creuset Kitchen knife’s are tough since they are a big “preference” item. But Wusthof makes excellent mass produced knives. If you’re looking for something more custom I’d research your local blacksmiths. One of my favorites is Henry Hyde. His site is Hyde handmade knives(all one word).com. His stuff is amazing and beautiful. Don’t have any griddle recs since I’ve never gotten into them. As for a bbq grill, I think the big green egg is the best you can buy with its lifetime warranty. But if it’s for the cabin and you don’t want to worry about someone making off with it. I’d say just a good old fashioned Webber kettle works just fine. Roller suitcases I don’t know: I’ve been using my goruck bag and a leather duffle from Pendleton. I love your list, my friend!   I do something similar, but with a little more vanity 😭 I have been using Goodnotes 6 on my iPad to make a kind of “posterboard wishlist”, including company name, model/product name, photos of it, price, and a link directly to the listing online.   Filson might be making their stuff less heavy duty than they used to, but it’s on their dime because they’re repairing it. Made in USA is still guaranteed for life and honestly some of my Filson gear from the 70’s - 90’s is very utilitarian. I have a bunch of rugged twill bags from the 90’s and they’re thick and HEAVY. Great for organizing gear. I like the newer lighter/softer bags for clothing and something I’ll take indoors. Mackinaw wool isn’t exactly the same, but it’s still like a suit of armor and it’s great from beating the sh*t out of by carrying or dragging wood in the winter. It really has to be pretty damn cold for me to put it on while I’m that active and if I need more heat, I’ll layer.

  I think mostly you just need to shop their flagship items. Redwing and Danner makes TONS of models but their USA stuff is all good, same for Filson and everything else. It used to be that anything you bought from these brands was top notch, but that was also before more models = more revenue.   The best belt leather is Wickett and Craig Bridle leather. It strikes the perfect balance between durable, weather resistance, and comfort. If you want a belt that lasts forever, go get yourself a double belt from Filson. They just take two Wickett and Craig belts and stitch them together. You won’t find a better belt, not even Hank’s. I don’t say that as a big fan of Filson, I say that as a leather worker who has been asked about leather belts a lot.

  Try the Raven Backpack from Fjallraven. Really any of their G-1000 backpacks will do the trick. My wife uses their Haulpack for a diaper bag and it’s been about 3 years and it looks brand new. If you go a more traditional route, you could try Frost River or Filson, but the prices go up and the look isn’t for everyone. If you like their stuff, respond to this comment and I can tell you about the ones I have of these brands. My go-to travel backpack for years was the Black Diamond Street Creek 24. Lots of features while still being a stuff sack type. Took that bag around the world and it too, looks new. The biggest failure points on packs are zippers. Look for branded zippers YKK or RIRI (RIRI is better, but probably wont see it on most bags). And generally the bigger the zipper, the longer it lasts. Things can get in between the teeth and it will still work unlike a smaller zipper. #10 is as big as you’ll typically see them and that’s great if you want a beefy zipper. 8-9 is good too. People have mentioned Osprey, and I have plenty of their stuff, but it’s a hiking brand. They have a few heritage line packs with a cleaner look, but unless you want ultralight and full synthetic fabrics, I’d look elsewhere.

  1. Tie between my 2006 Toyota Tundra and 1994 Toyota Camry. Both well over 300k miles and run just fine with normal maintenance 2. Darn tough socks, I am on my feet 16+ hours a day in all kinds of environments and they hold up like crazy 3. Le Cruset skillet, I splurged and got the expensive cast iron. When my partner dropped it and it broke in two, the outlet store replaced it zero questions asked 4. Filson medium duffle, again a splurge purchase, but it’s the perfect size for me for a three day weekend trip and it looks sharp 5. Carhartt Sherpa lined jacket, bought it in 2002 while still in the military and it’s gone through every winter since with just a little fraying on the sleeve and some discoloration from staining

  hard wearing wool henley sweater

  I would suggest getting some experience with secondhand wool sweaters, such as from thrift stores or ebay. The quality of older knits is generally higher than what's offered in stores now, and it's be a much cheaper way to learn your preferences when it comes to wool knits. My experience from having bought way too many secondhand wool sweaters and also from hand-knitting is that shetland wool and lambswool are both substantially hardwearing. I use a thrifted lambswool pullover for winter yardwork, for example. In my experience merino has nowhere near the durability, but perhaps really expensive merino (like the Filson sweater) would be more durable. Be aware that occasional mending is basically always necessary with 100% wool, and it's a skill anyone can learn and quite possibly even enjoy. There's also the necessity to appropriately care for your wool, e.g. using wool detergent (regular detergent eats protein, and wool is protein), hand-washing or using a very gentle cycle with cool water, and air-drying. It is a shift from 'regular' laundry, but not any more difficult especially since wool needs far less washing than, say, the Better Sweater (so, wool is actually easier, I think). Since you mentioned "hard wearing," you might consider blends such as 80% wool 20% nylon or even 50/50 wool/polyester. Since Patagonia prioritizes durability (e.g. without the need for mending), most of their wool clothing is a blend such as those two examples. Even though I'd generally prefer 100% wool, I have Patagonia 50/50 blends in both baselayers and an outer layer (a felted wool-poly pullover) and both are fantastic. There are also various treatments, such as "superwash," which alter the wool to give it more resistance to shrinkage or felting. Here too I theoretically prefer natural wool but superwash wool, such as from Ibex, can also be great too. (Incidentally, Ibex does make a henley, though it is lightweight at 195gsm.) Patagonia makes a "woolyester" fabric you might look into.

  I just went through a messenger bag/ briefcase buying spree on eBay. I got a buffalo Jackson, tumi, Timbuk2 and a Filson. I think the Filson is the winner for me but the other 3 are also very Solid pics. The Buffalo Jackson is a little big for me and the Timbuk2 was a little small. The timing is beautiful black leather and very practical but the Filson original briefcase just feels right to me for the style I’m going for. But you really couldn’t lose with any of them. Found them all on EBay, the Filson was of course the most expensive($230) and the Tumbuk2 was the lowest $60. The other two were $150 to 160

  Hi there! First off, I'm not a lumberjack, don't work on an oil rig, and I'm not a farmer. I really love outdoor tourism and leisure, as well as the heritage style, but it's more of a hobby for me than a job. I have a fairly large Fjallraven collection and about a dozen Filson items, including some of the popular ones like the Tin Cloth jacket, Journeyman backpack, Mackinaw Cruiser, and so on. (I even made a separate post about Fjallraven if you're interested: [link](https://www.reddit.com/r/Fjallraven/comments/1fsvwwj/my_fjallraven_collection/)). I think that despite their outward similarity, they are quite different both functionally and spiritually. Filson is concentrated American heritage, and you can feel it in everything — the style and design, materials, hardware. It embodies the spirit of cowboys, lumberjacks, and people working hard outdoors. Their materials are as strong as they can get, simple and even a bit "rough." Just take a look at their detachable Tin Cloth hood and you'll see what I mean. Fjallraven is a modern reinterpretation of classic outdoor clothing. Even though they look pretty authentic, their items are far more functional — they use modern blended fabrics that are much more wear-resistant (let's be honest, pure cotton can't beat a high-quality 35/65 blend), plus they breathe better and dry faster. Fjallraven's pieces also have a complex anatomical cut (check out their Vidda Pro or Keb trousers and the Skogsö jacket — lots of handy pockets, articulated elbows, and a hood that adjusts to your head without hindering your view or movements). With Fjallraven, it's super easy to walk, move, and use the pockets with zippers or buttons. Almost every item has a special inner mesh pocket for your phone — it's 2025, right? Waistbands and hoods adjust, and sleeve and leg openings are adjustable too — Filson doesn't have these features, just basic two-position buttons. If you wax them thoroughly, both G-1000 and Tin Cloth will resist rain for quite a while, but with moderate application, you'll feel the difference in breathability: Filson is like a non-breathable tarp, almost like rubber; thinner G-1000 allows your body to breathe. If G-1000 pants get wet, they dry quickly on your body (remember, only 35% cotton); Tin Cloth, on the other hand, might take overnight to dry (100% cotton, very dense and thick). That said, I truly love both brands. For style and "spirituality," I choose Filson. When I'm going camping or on a light trekking trip with a tent or hammock, where I won't be moving a lot, and the main goal is to enjoy nature, not the activity or route, or when I just want to stroll through the city feeling comfortable — Filson is my pick. But for serious hikes, where comfort and freedom of movement are key, it's definitely Fjallraven. I can't imagine a five-day hike with Filson: it would be sacrificing comfort just for the brand. I should mention, this is all just my personal opinion. Every brand has exceptions. Fjallraven has some less modern or practical items, and not every Filson piece is in the "classic wooden" design and materials — I'm talking about their main range and iconic items. P.S.   In my experience, Tin Cloth and the fabrics Filson sources from British Millerain are tougher than G-1000. I had a G-1000 jacket and a G-1000 backpack, and just from rubbing against each other, they wore holes into both. Fjällräven was nice enough to replace the backpack, but it wasn't BIFL.

  In cookware a cast iron pan is easily the lowest cost thing I can think of that will be BIFL. A good stainless steel pan will be BIFL. Faribault wool blankets. Stormy Kromer double mackinaw coat. Dehen1920 sweaters. I agree with the other poster about KitchenAid stand mixers, a good chef's knife, and carbon steel woks. I'm not sure if Filson has kept up their quality but I have had tin cloth heavy waxed cotton bib overalls and a packer coat for many years and they are really tough. Most people don't want wood furniture anymore and you can get entire dining room sets made out of oak or cherry for a few hundred bucks on places like NextDoor or OfferUp. Some of these sets are 50 years old and will last another 100 years if given basic care.

  Certain carhartt options are higher end and cooler looking. Filson maybe. There’s also high end designer brands that I’m sure people can post, I forgot what they were If I wanted functionality, I’d want a hood. And I am outdoors daily working in all seasons. The price on the high end stuff is so silly for what it is that it’d be hard to justify for something that might get fucked up. That’s why I’d lean towards carhartt for the overall prqcticality. You gotta decide between fashion or function I think, because the fashion coat for 500 bucks willl get muddy and ripped up being used in a heavy duty setting

  I just bought a Filson, based on a recommendation from this sub. It's extremely well made but has two design flaws: (1) no outside pocket for water bottle and (2) not enough holes on the straps. I am short and will have to pay someone to add an extra hole. The first flaw is constantly annoying and the second one I can throw a little money at. I paid half price for this very expensive bag because I bought an odd color (which I actually like) so at least it was not that expensive. If you don't mind about the water bottle, check out Filson, it's a work of art and they may still have some odd colors on sale.

  Looks like we might have the same Filson bag. Over the 15-20 years I’ve had mine I’ve washed it probably 3 or 4 times. Use Woolite or similar. Don’t put it in the dryer and oil the leather immediately! Leather looks worn but still fine. Have done the same with the canvas Mackinaw I got from my dad. All are unwaxed. The one pair of waxed pants I have gone back to Seattle once to get repaired and rewaxed.

  A couple options here and I worked for Filson, so you should listen to me! Option 1: mild soap (clear dawn, Dr. Bronners, etc.) and a super soft bristle brush (toothbrush would be my choice) go with the grain and lift up with a damp cloth. DO NOT brush around in circles or scrub at it. A lot of people don’t realize that the fiber in the rugged twill is waxed during production so while it’s not “waxed canvas” it’s also not just standard cotton canvas and you’ll see the difference if you just scrub at parts. You’ll still notice it going with the grain but not nearly as bad and it should even back out after some use, especially since it’s on the side that hangs by your body (this will get the most patina due to the wax). Option 2: If you want it to really get done, I’d send it to New England Reproofers who can give it a good enzyme wash and work with Filson regularly. Someone recommended removing hardware and using a washing machine. I would NOT do that. If you damage the leather or hardware through neglect you’ll void your repair guarantee, which negates the buy it for life premise. And soaking leather with detergent would most definitely be considered neglect. Plus, repairs on bags is one of my favorite things Filson does.

  I have the same Folsom bag. Call the store and ask what they recommend. I hand washed mine using dish soap (or laundry detergent, can’t remember) and it came out great. Might need to condition the leather after. It’s quite durable canvas.

  How does BIFL feel about Filson?

  I own a 100% cotton flannel from Filson that I bought used in a thrift store around 2007-ish. I wear it every winter on the coldest days (it is warmer than any other flannel I own) and I have washed it many times, and it looks just like the day I bought it. I have no idea how it's lasted this long given that it was used when I bought it, but it definitely strikes me as BIFL, as much as you can get for a cotton flannel. I'm a bit hard on my flannels, I wear them a lot and they usually wear out in about 5 years, some of the cheap brands less. I have no idea about their other products' quality. However I will say, in response to accusations that the quality declined in response to them moving production overseas, and saying that this happened recently, this shirt is clearly 15+ years old, and is made in Morocco, and is top-quality. Take from that what you want.

Folks there don't like that they've even started adding a logo patch to the outside. I have a Filson messenger bag and travel about twice a month for work.   I have (or have had) many of their bags. I currently have the Surveyor 36L backpack and medium Tincloth duffel in my travel rotation (mostly Goruck). I travel 42+ weeks a year and all of the Filson bags I’ve used have held up well.   Western / Americana style coats and jacket suitable for winter season, available in Europe?

  I'm a bit confused because to me "Western" style stuff is not suitable for winter Winter because the jackets have a shorter cut which means colder than a longer coat, are more boxy which means more cold air coming in from the bottom and through the sleeves etc. All I can think of is maybe a Filson wool and a waxed canvas jacket, but even those I would only deem suitable for winter in a city in middle/south/western Europe. For actual snow and rain in freezing temps I'd go for a different style.

  I can’t speak in terms of long term durability but I’m happy with the quality of my Filson Alaskan Guide shirt. Their Field Flannel shirt isn’t bad quality, but the Alaskan Guide shirt is noticeably better in terms of quality.

  Filson is my go to, but I have a couple Orvis that have really lasted too. Both have tall sizes. For the arms shrinking, make sure you hang dry them. It’ll make ‘em last way longer anyway.

  Flint & Tinder Waxed Trucker Jacket

  Yes. I originally got a different color (I forget what they call it). It looked tan on their website, but in person it was yellow-ish. My teen daughter told me to exchange, and she was right. Havana is great. Matches everything. I’ve gotten many compliments. My son has a Filson. It’s like a coffee-with-cream-in-it color. Also nice (and more the tan I was envisioning with the first jacket I ordered), but I like my darker F&T more. Filson is heavier weight, cut a bit shorter (I’m too old to pull off that look, I think), and not as wrinkly/rugged looking to my eye. Still very nice, and I don’t think either one would disappoint. Oh, for what it’s worth I’m 6’ 185lbs and have an athletic build. The first order was size L and it just felt too short. Again, my daughter agreed and so I ended up with an XL. My dress shirts have 34-35” sleeves and the jacket sleeves are maybe 1” longer than I’d like, but it otherwise fits just right. I actually fold the cuffs in half and it looks like they are meant to be that way. Anyway, the sizing is a bit weird so I thought I’d mention it. You might order two sizes and return the one that you don’t prefer.

  BIFL 2024 Winter Gear Request thread!

  Many of the brands recommended to you are fair in quality but don't expect 10+ yrs from LLBEan, lands end, or even most Carhartt any more. I personally own multiple coats from each of these brands and none have performed so well as my Filson insulated mackinaw cruiser. Filson (despite the unwarranted hate) is made from the highest quality materials, and is still mostly made in the US(despite the lies ppl tell for clout). Their Items are expensive, but they do massive sales every year at this time, and you can easily get coats for 50% off. Well worth the cost, and wool will never let you down. Also beware of down, difficult to clean and does not insulate when wet, unlike wool which is nearly as warm soaking wet as it is dry.

  How do you feel about buying things?

  I have totally fallen into the consumerism traps trying to find the “perfect item” specifically with handbags, kindle accessories and journaling supplies. Some people consider these things their hobbies but I find equal parts guilt and pleasure in buying things that suit my hobbies. I found my ideal journaling system and now I don’t shop for journals, and would consider new pens/other items for journaling a splurge I don’t have the mental capacity for currently. I read a lot on my kindle and found the case system that works the best for my lifestyle and the positions I prefer to read in. I have bought many handbags in the last year, and I had a baby a little over a year ago, so I feel like my hormones being out of whack has contributed greatly to me adjusting to this stage of motherhood and of course the identity crisis. It makes me feel sick every time I buy one but I couldn’t stop. Even now I wait on one in the mail, but I justified it because it’s a Filson, they were on sale and if I go back to work (journeyman piledriver) I can use it for that too. It’s appropriate for every life stage (except for formal obv.) and will last me the rest of my life. I’m hoping to put that to rest with this final purchase and so far I haven’t even looked at other bags waiting for this one to get to me. I am conscious of my over consumption and actively trying to reduce it. I have no other vices, as I quit smoking cigarettes before I had kids and I no longer drink. I also don’t go out often or even leave my house unless it’s to take the kids somewhere or go grocery shopping. For some people this is a good enough excuse, but I don’t think there realistically is one when you look at what it’s doing to our planet

  Unpopular Opinion: "BIFL" as an excuse for overspending

  Some clothes ARE buy it for life. Specifically outerwear- jackets, hats, even boots. As an adult who learned their lesson after my first pair cracked after 2ish decades my lacrosse snow king boots I bought last year will out last me. My filson double mackinaw hat will too. Most well made (not electric) tools are bifl. That and every gun i own is bifl quality.

  Ibex is a quality merino brand from what I've seen. I'm a big fan of merino in general and I have pieces from Smartwool, Icebreaker, Ibex, and Filson. My favorite shirt is Ibex and I'd say Ibex and Icebreaker are probably tied for the best merino clothing I've personally tried. That said the item you've linked to appears to be a wool/polyester blend. It is mostly wool, but I've never tried any of Ibex's blended fabrics.

  Question about flannel shirts.

  The Filson is worth it if you have the money. A lot of people are talking crap about the Filson flannels, but if you were to compare the weight between a Filson and some of the others will be very different. The Filson is worth it for the nice heavier weight for sure!

  I have the Filson Guide shirt. I have LL bean, Brooks Brothers, Eddie Baur, woolrich flannels as well. All but the Filson was thrifted (gift). The Guide is easily twice as thick. I wear it as outerwear. Too thick to tuck into any pants I currently own, if that's your thing. Just fyi, its a different material.
