Is there anything you're convinced is "the cheaper the better"?
That's totally valid. I don't do a lot of spur of the moment writing/sketching with pencil. I keep a fisher space pen and small notebook in my wallet, and if I'm going to write-write I use those. I just also try to keep a papermate mechanical on me, for marking cuts, stud locations, quick notes on wood. Literally just a utility item that I don't care to drop or forget.

Some of my favorite BIFL EDC items.
I have carried a zebra f701 with a fisher space pen refill for about 5 years. Prefer it over my tactile turn pen.

What are your favorite niche BIFL items that are currently available?
Leatherman, although that's not niche. Fischer space pen. Writes upside down, underwater, and in space. Brass body, pressurized cartridge that never clogs. I had one for 10 years, ran it through the washing machine have a dozen times, never even went through the entire ink cartridge. The only reason I even replaced it was because I'd worn off the black coating and didn't like the look of the bronze. Replaced it with one with a titanium nitride finish.

Where Does "Buy It for Life" Not Make Sense?
I have a Fisher Clutch. No one but me is allowed to use it. It stays safely tucked away in a leather notebook cover my awesome husband made for me.

Where Does "Buy It for Life" Not Make Sense?
I've used my Fisher for about the same length of time. But a more typical pen version. They actually have a fantastic warranty, the clicking mechanism broke after a few years and they replaced it free of charge. I'll never buy a different pen.

Where Does "Buy It for Life" Not Make Sense?
Yeah, I've carried the same Fisher Bullet Space Pen for 15 years. If you treat it BIFL, it'll last that way easily.

Where Does "Buy It for Life" Not Make Sense?
I managed to keep the same pilot, refillable pen throughout college, but I'm also the type of person who never lost a guitar pick playing a gig. I've had the same Parker jotter, Fisher bullet and cap o matic space pens and no name TI Bolt action pen for years now as well. Assuming that is because I always either have them on my person or in my bag and I never let anyone borrow them.

Fisher grandpa bear wood stove
I have a old fisher grandpabear stove. . Heating a 1500 sq ft rancher. Been bless,, I get free wood every year from a tree friend. Its not all oak. But its good. I get oak . Maple. Cherry. Black walnut. So late Oct stove time starts burns 24/7 till mid March. Its amazing how many times you have to handle a piece of firewood before it hits that stove. Alot of work . But no heat bill for 13 years now. .
