  I never want to buy cookware again

  I'm from Notrhern Europe, my skillets are mostly Fiskars 3-ply stainless steel. Quite heavy pans, probably similar to All-Clad. Alumnium core, couldn't justify copper core. For baking, I use Lodge cast-iron combination cooker oven. It is black, and heavy/dense, which is great for radiative heat transfer, compared to Le Creauset which is cream colour inside. For boiling water I use any pot, large enough stainless steel, brand doesn't matter.

  Yeah, they do. And you are in the buy it for life subreddit, the place wear people most likely care about that kind of thing so I added that info because it can genuinely be useful if you didn't know it, I learned it from a creator on YouTube and it was incredibly useful to me. Certain designs of scissors Excel at certain things and using them on improper materials will absolutely dull the blades. I only mentioned it in case you cared or needed specific scissors, like a pair for just cutting cloth. Seamstress shears are particular for sure. Their edges get messed up by course materials, including just regular old printer paper. It's also why I added that for beater scissors for around the house, I use fiskars. They hold up well as beater scissors but still get messed up. When I bought mine, I could glide them across Christmas wrapping to get nice clean edges. My fiance cut up cardboard with them once and now they don't cut cleanly anymore. It's not the scissors fault that they were used for the wrong material. They still work, just not nicely anymore.

  Side note. Scissors aren't general purpose. Once you use it for a task, it's best if it stays for only that task. If someone uses your cloth scissors for paper, you will feel the difference in the cutting and it will piss you off lol. If you have purpose specific scissors, they hold up a lot better and you'll be happier with them over time. As someone who has a significant other who doesn't give a fuck, I have general purpose scissor in my house cause she would destroy any nice task specific ones I would like to have. I just got the fiskars ones and I really like them, they take a beating well enough and still work fine as a set of scissors for around the house tasks

  For crafty or gardening stuff, the failure point is almost always cheap metal or soft plastic. Once that goes, everything else follows Forged carbon steel is worth paying for because cast pieces like to snap right at the neck when you actually lean on them and it’s maddening because you can’t fix it. Anything with a cutting edge works far better in high carbon steel since the mystery stainless on Amazon gives up almost immediately. Garden tools with ash or hickory handles are far safer picks, while those shiny laquered softwood ones feel nice at first... then the handle twists in half. Skip the battery powered self care gadgets. Mechanical gear lasts longer and you can keep it clean. A boar bristle brush with a wood handle will outlive everything else, the plastic vented ones melt or crack or drop bristles everywhere and it’s just a mess you don’t want. Craft tools that screw together are repairable, riveted ones go loose and you’re stuck with it but not in a good way. If you want examples, Fiskars Pro forged hand tools are solid and Kent hairbrushes are proper heirloom tier even if that sounds a bit dramatic.

  Any Fiskars tools (axes, shears, scissors) - they have a lifetime warranty and they perform exceptionally well at an excellent price. Estwing is a good American made alternative. Leatherman multi-tools that have 25 year warranty and can last a lifetime when maintained. Victorinox is a good alternative. 2 Oz of Silver. Because it’s cool.

  Great list. You focused on items that really last. knipex and malco make excellent hand tools. Fiskars and Patagonia are very durable for everyday use. Darn Tough socks basically come with a lifetime warranty. Replacing worn out items with BIFL products saves money and hassle over time.

  What signs do you look for to tell if something will actually last years?

  They did say it’s not a perfect system, but I have to agree it can usually be a good sign. I guess I’m also “cherry picking” because I can only go off my experiences, but from my experience, most of the examples come into my mind are backing the point. Well, maybe not that the brand only sells one thing, but that the one thing they are known for is going to be reliable: Fiskars for blades, makita for drills, ninja for blenders.

  [Request] Lopper?

  I kept only Fiskars powergear loppers at my camp for a few years, and I was quite content with absolutely everything about them except that I had to replace them every year. I am a 50-something petite, out of shape woman with an IT desk job, located close to Canada (very short gardening season) and I would destroy them over the course of the season. I love Finnish cutting tools and knives, and have always loved Fiskars. I have been to Finland, and am very fond of the brand. But they don't hold a candle to Felco. **Fiskars:** The BEST of the local hardware store brands for hand pruners and loppers. Great for beater jobs and loaning out. Generally $20-$60 depending on the model, sale, and supply chain antics. Easy to find locally. Not long lasting, but far more lasting than the other commonplace brands. Replacement blades are extremely hard to find, and the part numbers make no sense at all. **Felco:** One pair is worth 20 pairs of Fiskars. Hide them if your spouse is daft and prone to ruining tools or doesn't appreciate the care of blades. Plan a few hundred dollars for a pair, spare blades, spare springs, sharpeners, a pouch to keep parts in, etc. Only found at posh garden centers where they are often out of stock, and online. Cheaper in the long run than Fiskars. Replacing and sharpening blades is easy. If you want a saw to go with your Felcos, A Silky is a great bet, but Japanese steel rusts FAST, so you will have to take extra, extra care to not let it rust inside the scabbard. Japanese knives and swords are infamous since the Samauri, and their saws are as well. Do not loan them unless you have a meticulous friend/neighbor.

Previous to that, Buck shears, not the traditional scissor pattern but the kid that come apart into two pieces for cleaning. I gave a set of these as a gift, and the recipient thought they "came apart" and threw out a brand new pair, so I only gift the kind with a traditional screw connection. Cutco makes a pair similar to the Bucks, but the list price is frankly insulting for a pair made of 440 steel. I'd buy a set at 80% off, though.

They did respond after all this time, and came through with replacement parts feee of charge. Go Fiskars! That includes the height adjustment knob, drove chain, set screw for the sprocket that holds the chain, and newly-upgraded front wheels! The sad part is the grass catcher is not available and they don’t sell it, so if you can find it on the open market, that’s your only chance.

  I use the fiskar kitchen scissors in my garden. They've been hanging on a nail in the elements for 15 years. Still no rust and I use them for everything from harvesting, to cutting slugs in half, to popping weeds. Once in a while they get sterilized with rubbing alcohol if I use them to cut something that was diseased.

  Home improvement gifts for a first time homeowner?

It folds in an A-shape or is an extension ladder. It will help you change light bulbs, get cob webs out of high corners, repaint your interior, get on the roof, put up Christmas lights, clean outside windows, etc... Shovel with steel handle welded to spade like this[here](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Fiskars-57-in-Long-handled-Digging-Shovel-396680-1001/202681767). Maybe it's just me, but I can't resist using my shovel as a lever to pry up the dirt in digging. Picture standing on end of shovel to pull up dirt. This had led to broken shovel handles both fiberglass and wood. Now I could change the way I use the shovel but let's be real, I'm not going to, so I change the shovel. With the steel handle welded to the spade part this shovel is heavy but I've jumped on the end if this already, I will not be able to break this!

  this is interesting. I own a gransfors Bruk splitting maul; the very same as is pictured here. After using it to split to heat my house for two winters, I bought a fiskars 10lb, and it is miles better at the job. The bite angles on the gransfors just don't do it for me. It gets stuck in every log that doesn't split on a first swing as the wedge is too narrow. more than that, within the first few weeks, splitting maybe a cord worth of softwood, the head came loose from the handle and collar. it didn't come off; but it's definitely loose. I contacted Gransfors who did not then ship me a new handle and said I had to work with the store I bought it from. It was a gift, so it took some doing to connect with Lee Valley (very reputable retailer in Canada), who did not have any replacement parts available and apologized, leaving it at that. For these reasons, while the piece of steel will undoubtedly last well beyond a lifetime, i would not consider this product to be Buy It For Life. Instead, it is a pretty wall hanger and my fiskars does all the work, two or three times as quickly. my only caveat is that i've only used it on Maple, Oak, Ash, birch, poplar, and spruce, in Canada. It's possible that it is a more affective tool on other stove woods. sorry OP. Hope you have better luck with it than I did.

  I've got the splitting axe, model 445. 5.5 pound head, maul profile but not a maul. It's lovely to swing, I was using a Fiskars 8lb maul and it was just overkill for most of the rounds I get. The lighter Gransfors splitter is just so much nicer on my back, and the maul only comes out for the really stubborn ones. The Fiskars stuff is also perfectly BIFL, but I just really enjoy swinging a classic Swedish axe. I've also got a Gransfors large carving axe, and a Svante Djarv small cutting axe.

  Yes. For one, I've never sharpened my blades, just adjusted them a few times to make sure tolerance is appropriate; cutting has continued without noticeable decline... That said, Many people do sharpen these by running the blades back and forth with a lapper compound to facilitate some filing (with blades brought into light/moderate contact with bedknife)... plenty of videos on YouTube demonstrating the process.

Their products tend to have a more repair-friendly design as well. My favorite power tools to repair have generally been from Bosch, DeWalt, and Makita. They tend to have the most spare parts available for the best prices. The repairability of the KitchenAid Classic/Artisan stand mixers can't be overstated. Parts are easy to get and cheap. Repairs can be a little messy, but require few tools

  Fiskars has a few different quality levels, I would avoid the cheapest stuff, but their mid and upper tier tools seem to be good options for the price. I've also had good experiences with their warranty process (via Gerber, but the warranty goes through the same process)

  Best BIFL gardening tools?

  I like my Niwaki secateurs a lot (I got the sharpening stone as well but I haven’t used it yet - should probably do that this weekend) and I like their shovels more than any other brand. I used to be a landscaper so I’ve used a lot of shovels and the Niwaki is my favorite. I have the short and the tall lengths of pointed shovel (the gold ones). Fiskars loppers have been fine for me. Some no-name heavy duty garden fork I found at a thrift store has been my favorite thing recently. We have a Stihl weedeater and an old Honda mower and both are good.

  Fiskar has a decent model. Main issue is that wall, you are going to need a trimmer as well. So an alternative is to get an electric trimmer and do the whole yard with it.

  Fiskars push-reel mowers: they won't last a lifetime BUT... (see comment)

  Just broke out my fiskars again now that has minimal weeds. Lots of wildflowers and buffalo grass cause I prefer a natural lawn but this little guy cuts through what I need it to cut through. I have a rather large yard (about 1/4 acre) and I don’t mow all of it because I like the wildflowers and I let the buffalo grass come to seed so it will spread. I also don’t have beds for my plants/trees as I like a more natural look. This guy gets around those very close so they can be the star of their area. I love mine and nothing has broken yet but good to hear the company will help if it does!

  Most of it is junkie, yeah, but in terms of harbor freight stuff, at least the axes and hatchets, if you put some work into the handles scraping off the varnish and just making them slightly nicer, they're pretty good. That said, just going and getting say the Fiskar's version will be a little more expensive, but we'll save you having to do any of them.

  What’s one product you bought that has lasted forever and was totally worth it?

  I have a pair of their micro-tip pruning snips for delicate and precise flower trimming. It's an absolute beast. Other snips I've had have worn out after 100 buds or so. The fiskars have lasted me nearly 10 years so far. Still work like the day I got them.

  Does anything ever become BIFL?

  I've never broken a Fiskars axe/hatchet/maul/sledge. I've been processing 2-3 cords of wood per year for over 15 years with them. They're the same as ever. The X25 gets a 180/600 grit sharpening maybe twice a year. The mauls only get filed if I ding the apex of the edge.

  I'd add [Varusteleka](https://www.varusteleka.com/) to the outdoors gear category, their Särmä line is pretty skookum. Fiskars (at least their knives and scissors) and Iittala are pretty good too. And you can't go wrong with Mora Knifes.

Mid quality clothes pins, needles and a seam ripper Some solid cotton fabric to patch with if you have holes A pair of right or lefthanded Fiskars full size scissors, which you mark to dedicate to fabric, as cutting paper with the same scissor will dull it's edge.
