  Looking for a couch that is actually worth the money- why does it feel impossible?

  Looking for good quality furniture

  I swear by Flex Steel! We had two boys, a cat, a dog and a great grandma! I still have the couch I got 30 years ago. Moved it to the basement but it's still comfy. I made a slip cover when I didn't like the color any longer. I've had two since then. Just bought a loveseat for my bedroom. Price is reasonable (for furniture).

  Ever tried to save money and ended up spending more?

  Cheap furniture. In the past five or six years, we have gone through a sofa and three recliners. All mid priced but crap from a furniture chain. We have finally decided to put some money into something that is comfortable for 50-somethings in order to Flexsteel couch from a local furniture store. Got a great price on Saturday and I’m excited for this thing to last perhaps the rest of our lives. Definitely should’ve ponied up before.

  Thoughts on Flexsteel Sofas in 2025?

  Same boat.. I hate buying anything these days. You would think dropping 5k would give you peace of mind. I went thru this same struggle for a mattress last year. I haven't tried a Flexsteel yet but loved the La-z-boys with the neckrest and lumbar controls. It was amazing. I see Ratuken has 15% Cashback with them, so I may just roll the dice. The wireless remotes are also very nice feature. Im currently looking at the Fenwick Cognac Flexsteel sofa at Bed Bath and Beyond

  Desperate for a couch that doesn't suck

  My mid-90’s Flexsteel couch and loveseat are going strong. Other than a few cat snags, they look like new. Downsides are that they’re very heavy to move and that the upholstery is ‘90’s style. I wish they made slipcovers for them.

  Build quality of Flexsteel is top notch. Like I mentioned, we still have 2 sets of Flexsteel - one set is 15 years old and the other 25 years old. I don't know what that would cost these days but a lot of retailers had 0% financing for a year to help break up the purchase...

  best sofa that will last

  I have a **Flexsteel** recliner (12 years) and a sofa (9 years) that are going strong. Both are top-grain leather. They have developed a nice patina. The mechanics/motor haven't had any problems.

  Flexsteel, but Ive read their newer quality is iffy, so if you’re looking for used hopefully it’s a good one. We have a couch that’s almost 25 years old and still used daily. It’s not the squashiest but it’s very durable.

  Exactly. C&B is ply framed and notorious for sinking seating surfaces. They don't even post double rub ratings. Stickley and Flexsteel are quality for example. Pretty soon people are going to be posting stuff from Ikea on BIFL. God forbid you point it out or you are a jerk. 🙄

  Can’t say enough about Flexsteel. I bought my first really good armchair in January, a Flexsteel recliner. I sit in it every day and I love it, no regrets.

  When I was recovering from heart surgery, the doctor said to get a recliner if we didn't already have one. I went to Carpet Weavers on the way home from recovery, our local Flexsteel dealer. I found in one that was instantly comfortable. It was on sale for well under $1K and could be delivered that afternoon. We had room for it in our large bedroom so it was close to a bathroom and had a TV. It was great and I still love it 5 years later. As others have said, try them out.

  BIFL Sectional recommendations

  Keep the dogs off of the couch. From what you've said here, I would get a seamstress to make a slipcover for it. May be $1k, but it'll keep it going in the playroom a lot longer. But... BIFL recommendations... With kids and dogs, I'd go for leather, and make damn well sure it is full-grain genuine leather. If it says Bonded leather anywhere on it, it is junk. The leather should be made of leather, no polyurethane, no latex or synthetic binders... Just full grain leather. That isn't to say that cloth won't last as long, just that in my experience, leather is hardier and easier to clean. But I also have a 70ish year old sofa that is on its 2nd reupholster job, with cloth, and its in great condition... just kinda stained. Hancock and Moore is probably the best until you get into custom bespoke stuff. My parents H&M Sofa is probably 40 years old and while it certainly doesn’t look brand new, it still looks nice and is comfortable to sit in. Stickley is probably just as good as H&M for cloth, and 1/2 step down for leather. Next, there is Bradington and Young, Classic Leather, Smith Brothers, American Leather... probably some others. They’re after the H&M or Stickley customer that just can’t stomach the price. Some corners are cut, workforce isn’t paid as much, plywood frame instead of solid maple. Still probably a BIFL product for 99% of consumers, still made in USA, company will stand behind it. Then you get into the Flexsteel, Bernhardt, Palliser. Now we're still USA, but a lot of corners are cut. If it is reclining, the Mechanisms are imported, workmanship is done for speed - not quality, frames are plywood and stapled instead of jointed, foam quality is a notch down. If leather, you start getting into vinyl or bonded leather secondary surfaces, large gaps in joints and the like. Stitching isn’t as tight, etc. Then there is La-Z-Boy. They’re not what I’d call junk, but not what I’d call good either. It’s the lowest I personally would consider, but furniture snobs would call them bottom of the barrel. I’d call them just above that. Bottom of the barrel will be Ashley, Natuzzi, some other department store brands. Faux leathers, thin flexing frames, light duty mechanisms, cheap cores, cardboard over the arm-cap. You can sit in it in the store and it will just feel cheap and not durable. Imagine an old person who has to basically fall into a chair to sit down, or a fat person, or a drunk person, or a kid jumping in. It won’t last. Then your outliers: the Chinese imports. Some of it is really good, like Hooker. Probably about as good as a Bradington Young (same ownership), maybe the finish isn’t quite the same, but the structure probably is - just made using $2/hour Chinese labor. Some is horrible (what you’ll find in Costco or Walmart, and I’m a Costco fanboi and I say that). IKEA is probably in the Chinese category-some is good, some isn’t.

  I went with FlexSteel back in 2018. It's only me, so lightish use, but it's held up really well. BuyItForLife? Dunno. But it still looks new and liked their steel structure under the cushions.

  Thanks for surfacing those items, I can only speak from our experience with flexsteel, but recognize our experience might not be commonplace. What American companies would you recommend - that also avoid the business practice concerns, and consumer complaint mentioned above?

  Ashley's vs LaZboy for sofa (or what other recommendation?)

  If you are looking for a quality sofa, flexsteel brand is bulletproof. My grandma has a 10 year old flex steel sofa, it looks / feels brand new- but gets heavy use. The cushions are reinforced with springs, and the upholstery fabric is high performance. Ashley and LaZboy are 3-5 year couches, around year 3-4 they really show wear (still better than IKEA longevity wise though). We have been through 2 Ashley sectionals in 7 years, at about 3 years in they look haggard and or lumpy (detached back cushions). We won’t be going with Ashley in the future.

  Searching for a quality couch

  A lot of places have cut corners in the past 10-15 years that used to put out great stuff which is very sad. This is all dependent on what style and budget you want, and also if you have the 8ish weeks a special order will take (unless you look used which I highly recommend) First, I would go to a locally-owned, mom and pop place, not a giant chain. You're more likely to find smaller brands that still do things well that way. Things to look for, aside from style and comfort: Springs - 8-way hand/machine tied will be the best, they will be actual coil springs under the cushions that will support much better. Most places have switched to a sinuous spring which is flat and is ok, but not nearly as durable Frame - pick up a corner of the sofa. Is it heavy? Does it stay solid or twist when you lift it? Heavy is good for durability, and is stability. You want corner blocks if you can find them to keep the frame from twisting. Sometimes you can even find built-in legs, rather than removable which is excellent for durability (not so much if you have narrow doorways or hallways) Warranty - how long will the company cover issues? The warranty on the soft bits, fabric and cushions, probably won't be too long, but the frame should have a good, long warranty. Also check how they do repairs, will it be very annoying to actually use the warranty? (Chances are yes, but you never know) Fabric choices - Do they only have a handful of fabrics to choose from? Sounds mass-produced or like they should have a very good reason for it. Your sofa is probably your biggest piece of furniture and is the focal point for your room, people want to have it look a certain way and a good company will give options Cushion - down feels great, but are you up to fluffing it weekly? Loose cushions need to be straightened regularly but are important for even wear - being able to rotate and flip cushions ensures there's not one obvious spot where you always sit (note that this means they should be upholstered on all sides). If the cushions are not loose/flippable, the back/seat should be firm. Size - unless you are in your forever home, don't buy a giant sofa that will be hard to fit elsewhere The top brands I would look for when shopping, assuming budget isn't really a concern (these had the qualities listed above when I sold furniture in 2008-10, fully aware things may have changed): Norwalk - stylish, customizable Smith Brothers - Small Midwestern brand, definitely less stylish but impeccable construction Flexsteel - not just recliners, was a favorite among the sales people Ethan Allen (especially vintage) - My partner has a loveseat from his childhood that sits like brand new If they have a catalog with a huge distribution or are online-only or so influencer marketing, I would question it. All that said, I bought a new sofa last fall and it's from Pottery Barn 😅 I wanted something very specific that was hard to find in-store to test and they gave me financing which I needed. Bottom line, any decent brand-new sofa is going to cost you into the thousands so make sure you can try it and you love it. Depending on where you are and your ability to transport and carry a sofa, Facebook marketplace can have some fantastic finds. I still think about some I missed out on due to logistics/size not working

  The Stanton 888 sounds like a great fit, but I’d check its frame and cushion quality for durability. La-Z-Boy’s Tall Man series and some Flex steel models are good for taller folks too. If you want power recline, Southern Motion and American Leather are worth a look. You might find more options at local stores.

  Help finding couch set / sectional

  We were in your spot. We've been together 30 yrs and had been through a couch set and two sectionals. I didn't want to have to replace another sectional in 5 years so we went Flexsteel. It was $13k. It's got separation bumps between every seat so it's not the most comfortable thing to lie down on until you're used to it. A few years in and it looks new and the full grain leather is amazing. The recliner chairs are comfortable and sturdy. Make sure to get full grain leather. Our most recent last soda had top grain and it was awful

  Flexsteel modular sectional?

  It comes in lots of boxes that then have to be assembled. It was very easy though. My husband and I did it in less than an hour and neither of us is what you’d call handy. I’ve heard the Lovesacs are much more labor intensive to assemble.
