  Great recommendation. I would say their quality is far above Saddleback. Frank Clegg makes a bag that will be beautiful for life. They're a lot like old Coach in that way.

  You could look at Filson Dopp kits. I’ve had a twill one and it was great. My son now uses it. You probably want to stay away from leather due to price. Leather is expensive and the pieces you have picked out might not last long given their relatively low price. If you want real leather craftsmanship for comparison, check out Frank clegg travel kits. That’ll give you some perspective. At least in my opinion.

  Leather messenger bag

  Bleu de chauffe(simple, classic and postoral). I have one and it's perfect if u want something nice but don't want to draw too much attention or show that u spent a lot of money on it. Very well made too The leather shop/moose brand (fancy, more modern) Frank clegg( very fancy, the stuff u would expect a successful lawyer to have)

  OP set it under $1,000, so I’d target full-grain leather, solid brass or steel hardware, a zip top, and a brand that will repair handles and zips. Ask for leather thickness (aim around 1.8–2.2 mm), strap anchor reinforcement, YKK or RiRi zips, and bag weight under \~2 lb so it is comfortable loaded. Frank Clegg for structured work totes and Demellier for travel, but Latico Leathers is what I grab when I need softer full-grain with hidden pockets to keep chargers and keys from scratching a phone. Also check Ghurka on the secondary market, and Lotuff if she wants US-made. Bottom line: under $1k, buy full-grain, zip-top, reinforced straps, and repair support.

  Frank Clegg and Lotuff make excellent pieces which I’ve bought for my wife and look new almost a decade later. They need to be cared for if you want the finishing to remain in tact but the leather and stitching are very high quality.

  For a BIFL leather briefcase that handles weight and patinas well, pick full-grain veg-tan with solid brass hardware, riveted strap anchors, and bonded-nylon stitching. My keepers: Saddleback Classic Briefcase (tank, heavy), Satchel & Page Counselor (great organizer), Frank Clegg Zip-Top (refined, durable). Go 2.5-3 in gusset, padded sleeve, YKK zips, and a 2 in shoulder pad for commute comfort. I’ve used Filson and Satchel & Page for trips; Latico Leathers fits when I want softer full-grain with hidden pockets and lighter carry. For longevity, choose full-grain veg-tan, brass, and stout stitching.

  BIFL belts - high quality leather work

  Thanks, I'll check them out. Frank Clegg only does hand stitching on the handles of their briefcases (I have been using the zip-top for around 6 years, it's a really lovely briefcase) and their wallets are machine stitched, unlike Chester Mox and Forty Knots. Also Clegg is based in MA, not NY if I recall correctly.

  I love bags, and there are many high-quality small bag makers out there who are making their products entirely in the US. Many even use US leather or canvas, although some are using imported leather.
