  Unpopular opinion: The 'BIFL' mindset is becoming a luxury most people can't afford, and that's by design.

  It is a frigidaire. iirc it was an ammonia fridge in terms of coolant and those are efficient and durable. Ammonia friges are still an industrial standard. It was super heavy and bulky thing, she got a "mid range " model that cost them 275.00 in real money. As in silver. Even at the fractional level of the era, it would be viciously expensive today. And it sealed very well. At least i don't remember feeling any cold drafts out of it, nor did it get cold on the outside. Given the rest of her home was extremely low tech even when i was a kid in the 70s, her power use wasn't much.

  I have a Frigidaire from Walmart that’s been going strong for 4 years now. I clean it monthly with vinegar and hot, soapy water. It takes all day but it works. It’ll probably break the second I post this.

  If it's on indiegogo, you can almost be certain that there are not enough units out there to get a true reliability test. Additionally, a *big* part of BIFL on electronic devices is the availability of parts as well as the continued support from the company, both of which are dubious from a startup. My advice would be to either go with something cheap from Frigidaire or Igloo, or to pony up the money for the GE Profile Opal.

  Had a GE Opal for over 3 years it was great makes really good ice, cleaning it sucks and eventually it kept flashing yellow lights (needs cleaning). I’d run a cleaning cycle its work for a couple days then do it again. Eventually I gave up and got a Frigidaire from Costco. Ice isn’t as soft but it’s working well going on a couple months and seems easier to clean. When it dies just gonna return to Costco.

  Is there anything you're convinced is "the cheaper the better"?

  Never had an issue with that, no. IIRC, any water that winds up in the insulated bucket just gets pumped back into the system to make more ice. It only stops making it once it reaches an internal sensor so you don’t have cubes falling all over the place. For what it’s worth, the kitchen in my last apartment got ungodly hot in the summer, but never had to clean up any puddles or messes. Can’t speak for other brands, but the Frigidaire one is super solid.

  Is there anything you're convinced is "the cheaper the better"?

  Might be worth looking into a countertop ice maker. Got a Frigidaire one from Walmart about 2 years ago for around $80. Needs wiped out from time to time to prevent mold growth and you have to manually add water into the reservoir, but it makes ice at a decent speed and has never given me any problems. Would recommend!

  Dishwasher with no smart features

  A bog standard Frigidaire is still a reliable machine imo. Replace any spinning wand with the traditional sprayer part, ensure all spinning spray heads rotate freely before starting a load, check for solid debris in the drain once in a while, put liquid detergent in main compartment and prewash, run hot water at sink until hot before starting. They work decent if you do all of the above, and no cleaning a filter regularly like you have to do with a bosch. The drain on a Frigidaire eats soft food scraps.

  I know there is no such thing as a BIFL appliance, but what are your thoughts on this washer? Please no speed queen recommendations, they are too expensive and don't hold enough.

  Personally, I would avoid LG, and lean towards Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, Speed Queen, Kenmore, Frigidaire, Electrolux, and more. I know a few of those fall under the same parent companies, but they all specialize in appliances. If you want a Speed Queen but can't afford one now, maybe look at marketplace, nextdoor, etc for a local used one cheap and then save for a bit until you can afford the Speed Queen. I've seen washer dryer sets sell for $40 online and they'll usually run for a year or two at least and you could use that time to save and find a deal on what you actually want and something you know will last.

  Best Dehumidifier for Basement Moisture Problems

  I dealt with a damp basement for years and the thing that finally worked for me was a high-capacity unit with a built-in pump and a true low-temp mode. I ended up buying a 50-pint Frigidaire with continuous drain and pump because I didn’t want to empty buckets, and it pulled humidity down fast even when the temp dipped into the 50s.

  Opal looks nice but it’s notorious for breaking down, mine didn’t even last a year.   My GE Opal made the screech no matter how often I cleaned it and died in less than a year The Frigidaire only ever makes noise when its time for me to clean it. After my first one lasted a year I bought a second one. They do make the occasional slush for whatever reason. They have two models. Is yours the $150 or $200 model? Mine are the cheaper model.

  Oster Blender - received about 1974 as a gift and we're still using it. The original blade and O-ring mechanism are still in it and work wonderfully, as well. Bought my home 28 years ago and purchased a used refrigerator, at that time. It's still working fine, as well. It's a Frigidaire.

  Of the choices listed I'd go for the LG or the Whirlpool. I'd like to recommend the Frigidaire FFHT2045XS but FYI I had to install a child safety lock on the freezer to prevent it from popping open if someone slammed the fridge door. Good unit otherwise though.

  Only from my experience, I have a fridgidaire standalone ice maker, and I basically leave it running all the time. I frequently forget to shut it off, and sometimes the pump runs dry. It still makes ice quickly and consistently.

  What's something you've had forever that surprisingly outlasted its time ?

  There is a 1980 Frigidaire refrigerator in our garage. It was bought by the house’s previous owners in the eighties. It’s almond color, with a little fake wood trim on the handle. Super fancy for its time because it’s a side-by-side with an icemaker and everything. Best guess it’s about 40 years old. It works perfectly. The freezer freezes and the fridge keeps stuff cold. This refrigerator will outlive us all.

  I’ve been really disappointed in Whirlpool kitchen appliances. We bought a whirlpool stove and over range microwave about 9 years ago. The microwave quit after just 2 years. The handle broke off the top oven within a year. We had to replace our 17 y/o Frigidaire refrigerator last year and bought a whirlpool. We’ve had to have the ice maker repaired twice already. I’ve decided that any kitchen appliances that need to be replaced won’t be whirlpool. Our 16 y/o Frigidaire dishwasher is still going strong. After my 20 y/o GE washer died 2 years ago we replaced it with a whirlpool and so far so good!

  I’ve had my fair share of dehumidifiers and honestly, not all of them are crap, but there are definitely some that feel like a waste of money. The key is to get one that’s sized right for your space and has decent reviews for actually pulling moisture out efficiently. I’ve been using the Frigidaire FFAD7033R1 for a couple of years now, and it’s been solid—quiet enough, doesn’t use a ton of power, and really makes a difference in my basement’s humidity levels. I noticed way less musty smells and even fewer mold issues after running it regularly.

  Are there any dehumidifiers that last more than a year or two?

  I’ve been pretty lucky and have only bought 2 in the last 15 years. I bought my GE when the Frigidaire had a recall. We still use the Frigidaire to help dry the basement after heavy rains. It is very damp here so I’ve always had the primary unit plumbed into a drain and they run 3/4 of the year and many/most hours of a day.

  French door (and side by side) is where most of the problems are (with ice dispensers on the front). If you are not particular about the style, you could get a two door (top or bottom freezer) with no dispensers on the door simple fridge. GE/Frigidaire/Whirlpool could work. Pick whichever model provides you the most functions. If you are looking for premium, Miele could fit that price range (Bosch if you are looking for Counter depth). Consumer reports lists LG, Miele, GE for bottom freezer; Wirecutter does almost similar.

  Old Frigidaire. Simple, nearly indestructible. Four knobs for the top burners, one for temperature control of the oven. I'd really don't see why you would need a manual to use it. It's pretty intuitive if you've ever used a stove before. And a stove like this, with no electronics to speak of, is so simple to repair and not likely to fail in the first place. Two problems that might occur is a runaway burner and an oven that's way off, or non functional. The runaway burner( either it's off or running full blast, no in between) is caused by a failed infinite switch. That's the part inside that the knob is attached. It's easy to replace, but be sure to unplug the appliance first.

  It probably had a freon leak. You could try recharging the refrigerant, but that is quite difficult to do on a dehumidifier. As for the quietest units. On paper, Homelabs units are the quietest, with a 33 dB range. But Fridigidaire units are also fairly quiet at 40 dB on paper. I recommend checking out this huge dehumidifier comparison sheet. It lists almost all of the brands and their models. Go through the data and find one that is reputable and has the longest warranty.   Frigidaire stand up deep freeze, dates to the 90's but I bought it used 5+ years ago from the OG owner for $80. Use it daily though I appreciate the reminder that it could use a defrost. We just got rid of our 20 year old washer last year. (Hotpoint brand, think we lucked out on that one). The fridge is an GE French door model from 2011 according to the sticker, that came with the house. But we love it. Pretty typical household use on all items. Family of 4.

Even paying the upper end of market value for the used market, you still get a much nicer product than what the same money would buy new, and you get to help keep more unnecessary stuff from being produced Its a bit intimidating to start buying expensive stuff online, but once you get a feel for how sellers in a particular niche tend to advertise and document things, you can get a very good idea of how the things will function.

  I saw this too. We had an 18 year old Frigidaire with an ice maker in the door. The ice maker leaked at one point, so the previous homeowner disconnected it but the fridge kept trucking. We went to a local appliance store and got the same model. We had such odd stairwells that we had two options: Frigidaire or GE. The appliance place said they repair more GEs than Frigidaire, and we found good reviews of this model. Still early, but four years later, it's going strong. Ideally, we would have gotten a Bosch. But they didn't make a narrow and thin enough model.

  What niches/crucial things to critically consider when hunting for a new refrigerator outside of main points like preferred type, dimensions and capacity?

  I have recently purchased a Frigidaire bottom freezer french door for pretty cheap ($1200) and it works great so far. In the 7 years prior I had a Samsung French door that came with the house that I replaced because the ice maker became a solid block of ice weekly, replaced with an LG that failed the compressor after 5 years. That was replaced with a Samsung that broke twice in 6 months and they gave me my money back.

  Best large size fridge brand and model?

  We've had it for 5 years and no issues so far, though I can't claim BIFL based on that short of a time frame. I will say all of our kitchen appliances are Frigidaire Professional line, and we've yet to have a problem with any of them. But again, only 5 years of experience to go on so far.

  Looking for a counter-depth french door fridge with great ice maker

  We have a Frigidaire with French doors (model fpbs2777rf4). It has two ice makers (one thru door and one freezer), water thru the door and some other nice features. Not sure if it is the depth you want. However, it fits into a pre-made fridge area without issue.

  BEST Dehumidifier today?

  I feel you on the noise and heat issues with older dehumidifiers—my old one sounded like a jet engine and made summers unbearable. I upgraded to a Frigidaire dehumidifier a couple of years ago, and it’s been a total game-changer. It’s much quieter, doesn’t heat up the room as much, and has an auto-pump feature, which is super convenient. I just have it set up to drain continuously, so I never have to think about emptying it.
