  I've tried for years and the more money spent the more disappointment when it leaks three years later. I use Frogg Toggs. Cheap, light, easy repair. They all build up sweat inside anyway.

  Not all. See Frogg Toggs, non-durable but never needs refreshing and many time more breathable than dwr/gortex which wears out at about the same rate as frogg toggs.

  This comment is confusing, I believe the point of Frogg Toggs is that they are breathable, I swear by em. They are easily torn, but that doesn't matter because you can buy twenty of them for the price of one gortex/DWR jacket. I get through 3+ seasons backpacknig with one basic Frogg Togg ultralight rainjacket and pants (poncho is another good option.) Aboard a ship taking on waves only thick rubberized suits will work. But hiking in rain, you'll drench yourself in sweat, breathability is key, armpit vents ain't gonna cut it. And no need to spray/reactive a Frogg Togg suit.   Try Frogg Toggs. Very popular with backpackers. Light and cheap. They’re about $25. It’s a non-woven material which means it will be less breathable. But any rain jacket won’t be very breathable so it doesn’t make that much of a difference. They don’t “wet out” like woven rain jackets do. Plus there’s no dwr coating to worry about. Frogg Toggs are famous for tearing the second they snag on a branch though, so not exactly durable. But as long as you’re careful not to tear the jacket it will keep you dry with minimal maintenance for a long time.

  Frogg Toggs are incredible. Super cheap, fairly durable, and better than most expensive gear. Size up if you get the jacket, because more air flow means you’ll feel more dry if you’re actively moving. The poncho is awesome, it looks ridiculous but who cares? You’re dry!
