The 21st Century Ruined Everything 😭
Have you tried Frye? Someone I know will only wear that brand of boots. She has one pair she still wears from the 80s. I don’t really wear boots but that’s her favorite brand.

What was the best purchase you made this year?
Frye comforter from Costco. It's so warm and soft. I love it but don't think I'll have it for life. Levi's canvas jacket. I love it and will have it for life.

If you started your wardrobe over from scratch, what would you buy? (US)
Good leather shoes/boots that can be re-soled (not all shoes can!) My Frye boots are a staple. They go with everything, and are so comfortable.

My 2025 BIFL products this year, how about you?
Leatherman replaced 2 multi tools for me this year for free. My Smartwool socks just turned 10 years old and still going. Got my Frye boots resoled - like new. Grip6 belt still looks new. I also learned how to darn holes in clothing, more of a BIFL skill than product.

any brand recs for fashionable leather boots?
Seconding Solovair hard - got mine 3 years ago and they still look brand new despite daily abuse. Also check out vintage Frye on Poshmark, sometimes you can snag the older ones that were actually built to last instead of the new fast fashion versions

Looking for an overwhelmingly cozy blanket recommendation up to $200
I am not sure minky/plush blankets are very BIFL, but I got a very cozy one by [Frye at ](https://www.costco.com/p/-/frye-luxe-faux-fur-throw/4000281858)costco and am loving it. I think there are other brands that make ones like this that are viral brands, I have seen ads, but cant remember names. Some were larger than this one etc. So maybe this will help your search!

I've been carrying [this](https://www.thefryecompany.com/products/melissa-tote-beige) $400 Frye bag daily for about 5 years. It's still in fantastic condition, the leather is soft and supplement, and the stitching on the handles hasn't frayed at all. I get compliments on it frequently. It's a big bag as well, which I like. It's very understated, no obnoxious branding all over it. Just a great quality classic handbag.

Also going to add Frye in the mix! I see some people complaining, but it depends on what you order. Their leather is great quality and the bags are well made. When it comes to the shoes, I could see some people having issues. It depends on what you order and the construction of the shoe. Any shoe that is glued isn’t going to hold up. But all of their shoes with good year welt construction are buy if for life shoes and can be resoled over and over.

It looks like there's some debate downthread but my best constructed purse is a Frye from about 2017-2018 (not sure if the quality has decreased since then). I've literally carried it for years and it still looks amazing. Another option is Rough and Tumble bags: they're online and you're able to design your own bag. Bags are made in Maine.

BIFL dressy leather footwear for women
You do not buy brands of footwear as BIFL items ever. Most brands make normal and BIFL footwear, so, for example, if you learn that Frye makes BIFL boots (which they do), you can't go running around buying them all up as you'll learn they also make disposable fashion footwear as well. If you want to thrift these, this is where google comes in as no one is going to give you a 100% list of BIFL women's footwear. Your thrifting resource is you in store with the shoes/boots and google.

Good quality boots that will last me a decade?
Couldn’t agree more with this! I got a pair of Frye engineer boots about 8 years back and honestly, they've been through hell and back with me for commuting, hikes, rain, even the occasional construction site visit. I barely ever treated the leather and they still look solid, just a bit scuffed. Only real upkeep so far has been new soles after a few years, but the leather is still basically indestructible.

Good quality boots that will last me a decade?
I have a pair of Frye engineer boots that I've had for about 13 years. I've had them re-soled once. They are pretty high quality shoes and Frye boots are made to last. However you can't wear even the highest quality boots every day and expect them to last a decade. One of the keys to making boots last is NOT wearing them every day.

What products used to be well built back in the day but now are low quality?
Pretty much any brand on this page : [https://corporate.authentic.com/brand-portfolio](https://corporate.authentic.com/brand-portfolio) Absolute shit private equity holding co that acquires the brand/company, then runs the company itself into the ground (and all the employees of the taken over company get let go). Then they just license the brand name to shitty manufacturers. Now you will see things like Frye boots in TJ Maxx on the regular for just this reason.

Agree on fryes, had mine since 2009 and had them resoled twice, still going strong with heavy west. Also agree on GF collective. I bought a few pairs of leggings when they first launched and they are still in amazing condition.

Name your top 5 BIFL items
* My Frye Melissa knew-high leather boots. They’ve been resoled a couple of times. My Ukrainian cobbler approves “Dees boots will serf you your entar life” (sorry, accent hard to convey). I have 4 pairs of Frye boots. I think I either purchased them secondhand or was gifted all of them. I’ve also had 3 or 4 pairs of their shoes. The [Kenzi Venetians](https://www.thefryecompany.com/products/kenzie-venetian-cognac?variant=44106757898431&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21613660737&gbraid=0AAAAAD_SVVvGw7fTNPoOd1GUxw1ap_xZv&gclid=Cj0KCQjwjo7DBhCrARIsACWauSk2mRtHFyLcOLZerEY4qTYnnIrrpK2sUl3BPEVhjGyB6-BK5Td34D8aApqxEALw_wcB) look comfortably worn in after 6 years of office wear. Got them in snakeskin and they’re nowhere near as comfortable. I also tried the [Carson](https://www.thefryecompany.com/products/carson-ballet-woodrose?variant=44106714448063&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22344483775&gbraid=0AAAAAD_SVVuZYbeMk04-TFK5cvzC0s87X&gclid=Cj0KCQjwjo7DBhCrARIsACWauSkSRJ7fLOPPY2L3af5_CCM9LmiRkwsVyjdqgyWwJ7BvZpWpUASvVmkaAkSVEALw_wcB) flats and they were ok, lasted maybe 3-4 years. * I’ve had a pair of men’s Wrangler duck cloth pants from Wal Mart for like 7 years. Granted I don’t work outside but they’re generally handy for any yard work, painting, boating in the cold, etc. * My Girlfriend Collective products have held up really well over the years. I’ve heard some of the reviews were less good recently (so frustrating) but everything I’ve gotten has been good. I have 2 sports bras, a onesie/leotard/wrassling suit, a tennis dress, and a pair of leggings. I prolong the use of my stuff with mending and fixing it when I can. I haven’t had to mend the pants or girlfriend collective stuff.

Boots that will last a long time
A pair of [Fluevogs](https://www.fluevog.com/shop/?r[]=gender%3Awomen&r[]=attribute:6&r[]=colour:black) should last you a good while. Frye boots are another long lasting brand, but I'm not sure you'll find something with the heel in your shot. There's a [Doc Martin](https://www.drmartens.com/ca/en_ca/leona-womens-smooth-leather-heeled-boots-black/p/22601001) with a heel, but you gotta put up with the yellow stitching. I have a pair of [Ten Points boots](https://tenpointsfootwear.com/products/cecilia-laced-boots-black-7?variant=48918897983836) (Swedish brand) that I love.

Looking for a similar boots but high quality
I have Frye 8H boots and have bought engineers from them as well. Basically wear them everyday, The harness is made in USA and better made IMO, the engineers I bought that were made in Mexico had much thinner leather that stretched out pretty quickly, so I’d recommend the former if that’s a look you like

Looking for some quality, american made womens boots
Find your men's size is step 0 for you as that opens up the aperture much wider. Maybe you'll find some men's brands with sizing for you. Allen Edmonds, Alden, Red Wing and Frye are ones that jump to mind. BIFL means goodyear welt construction as the only brand mentioned that is 100% goodyear is Alden, so you have to look carefully to the others for country of origin and construction method.

My Frye leather boots (I have 3 pairs, 7-10 years old) and all are still going strong with original soles. I will get them re-soled when needed. My Scandinavian 100% wool sweaters (I have 6 of them, all over 30 years old). Not quite BIFL but I inherited my partner's father's 2007 Toyota Prius. It just hit 100k miles at 17 years old. My friend goes through shoes/boots within a couple months, are there comfortable, lifetime quality options for restraunt workers in the 300usd range? Please advise, thank you
Dansko clogs with regular insoles (not memory foam). They last forever, provide great support, and are great for standing long periods. The only caveat is if your friend has weak ankles—mine rolled a lot in them. My other rec would be shoes that can be resoled. There are several brands—I have frye chelsea boots that have been half and full resoled several times over the last 9 years and still going strong.
