  Looking for camera recommendations - family/vacation photos + kids' sports

  You would have to go for at least something like Fujifilm XS20, VI100 or T30 or a Sony A6700 (or earlier generations depending on your budget.) and a standard zoom/travel zoom lens. If you don't want to spend >1-2k $/€ you should stick to your phone.

  What purchase changed your habit?

  I bought an analog Canon AE-1P because I wanted to shoot film. It's really expensive to develop so I borrowed a older Canon 550d to see if I enjoyed digital, which I did. A few months back, I decided to get a Fujifilm X-T30II which has become my main camera. I still shoot film, but since it's more expensive, I am a bit more selective with what I want to shoot. Still prefer to shoot analog. Head over to /r/analog to get some inspiration.

  Digital Camera - any forever cameras?

  Really depends on what I want to shoot. However I use a spread mostly of three lens based on that. I have the fixed [18mm](https://www.fujifilm-x.com/en-us/products/lenses/xf18mmf14-r-lm-wr/) on it right now as it is a great all around lens that can shoot landscape to street photography and due to the massive sensor on the X-T5 allows for you to crop photos down and still have awesome shots. Then for my midrange as I love wildlife photography is the [55-200mm](https://www.fujifilm-x.com/en-us/products/lenses/xf55-200mmf35-48-r-lm-ois/). But to go along with that I got my big boy for the deep shots with the [150-600mm](https://www.fujifilm-x.com/en-us/products/lenses/xf150-600mmf56-8-r-lm-ois-wr/). However, most people go for the 100-400mm for their telephoto lens on this camera, but as I already had the 55-200mm I opted for the larger lens as I got it used for about 30% off. I also like to road trip and hit national parks, and I have had issues with not being able to reach far enough out to photograph wolf packs or get tight enough to small birds to really catch all the details. It really came in clutch the day after purchase when we were road tripping to Portland, Oregon and went to Cape Disappointment State Park and a bald eagle was perched in a tree. Also got some cool shots of some Coast Guard choppers and crew doing some training out off the coast.

  A few things I would suggest looking for. I'm not especially into cameras, but I do use a lot of older tech: * Make sure third party batteries are available * Make sure third party lenses are available * Bonus points for lens mounts that have been around a relatively long time like Sony E (2011), Micro 4/3 (2008), Fujifilm X (2012) Canon RF and Nikon Z should also be great options

  One big factor is your budget. Fujifilm makes excellent cameras. The X100V and X100VI get over-hyped on social media. Neither is an ideal camera for a beginner: there will be a learning curve to use either one appropriately. I have owned em both. This can show up as spots on images. Since the lens does not come off, you would need to send the camera to Ricoh for cleaning. Despite those drawbacks, they can shoot wonderful images. I sold mine. Canon cameras are fairly user friendly for beginners. Canon R10 is one good choice. R7 is a little better and a little more expensive. I would not buy the standard kit lens with either one. I would consider the Canon RF-S 18-150 lens if u want one that 'can do almost anything'. That lens would not be ideal in low light. The Sigma RF (for Canon) 18-50 f/2.8 lens would be a bit better in low light but that zoom range is not as versatile. You 'zoom with your feet'. In theory you could stick to just one lens and get lots off use out of it once you learn how to use it. Canon USA Refurbished, MPB and B&H all sell quality used camera gear. B&H also sells new gear. Although I have no direct experience with them, Panasonic makes some very nice all in one zoom compact cameras, according to the reviews. MPB has a section at their website "Panasonic compact cameras". My most compact camera is discontinued but is available at the same website, used, for more than it cost new.   Digital Camera - any forever cameras?

  I have the Fujifilm X-T5 and it is awesome. It has the smaller body due to being a mirrorless camera, however on release it had the largest sensor for a mirrorless camera. I absolutely love it, but the one thing I highly recommend is get just the body, and then buy a couple lens as the 2 different bundles they have, the lens in both have super slow with their autofocus. Once I got some better lens the autofocus hasn’t been an issue at all.

  Digital Camera - any forever cameras?

  I'd check out r/M43 and r/AskPhotography to educate yourself more before taking the plunge. M43 has the advantage of being smaller and cheaper. Both subs should have info on used websites, that might be the best/cheapest route to go. All that said, the best camera is the one you have with you so you could just get a smartphone with a stellar camera and use that.

  Digital Camera - any forever cameras?

  Depending on your size requirements, I would like to add Fujifilm cameras as an option for you. From what i understand, they are well-built and they create nice photos straight out of the camera. With many cameras it is more or less required that you do some post-processing. You probably won't have much time for that.
