One of the most bombproof, apocalypse ready watches you can buy.
I would rate a digital watch over an analog. Too many moving parts in an analog watch put it at a disadvantage when compared to a digital. Now the G-Shock GW-M5610U - that is bomb proof.

I have a $100 REI Gift Card. Should I get Darn Tough socks or Maui Jim sunglasses?
Do not buy expensive sunglasses. Sunglasses are disposable because sooner or later you will break or lose them. Sunglasses are 20 bucks tops. Also, darn tough is overrated and under sized. Socks should be all the same neutral color so matching them is easy. Maximize your life by saving time. Go to target...buy some socks there. Replace them every year or two. If you got rei gift card and you want to stay in the spirit of the sub....buy a gadget. I recommend a gshock or timex watch. If you are set on apparel get a Patagonia fleece or put it to an arcteryx shell. I know folks here are going to cry as they sip coffee strained through wool in their moccamasters but trust me on these points. You will be better off if you take this advice. Get a cool watch.

I'd vote for pretty much any G-Shock variant, but am partial to the simplicity of the GW-5610. Low profile and lightweight. Solar and atomic (assuming the atomic clocks are still functional during the apocalypse), and nearly indestructible.

I love G-Shocks and the Master G series are awesome, but I feel like they are more like a piece of jewelry than a daily watch. A 5000 or 5610 are more practical and offer better value for the money.

A little bit of hyperbole there, OP, but G-Shocks are robust watches that offer great value for money and definitely have their place in BIFL.

Looking for a good quality wrist watch
The watch subs, the main one and the brand related ones can be super helpful. Quartz, analog with a battery, are very accurate for the price. Digital are obviously battery. Mechanical have to be wound, usually every day or two. Automatic are self winding mechanical watches that wind while walking/moving. Mechanical and automatic aren’t as accurate as quartz, unless you pay for a high end one. There’s also solar and other funky battery options. Quartz have the classic ticking sound while mechanical are quiet. Quartz are also more robust, but they require batteries. In theory a mechanical watch can run indefinitely if it’s always wound/worn. If you want digital and cheap, then Gshock Decent quality and price, then seiko, citizen for both mechanical and quartz. There’s also all different tiers of luxury brands. From a few $100 to $100k. There’s also styles, I prefer divers as they’re more water resistant than most other styles. Personally I wear an Omega Seamaster Pro, and I have a Gshock for work as I am a mechanic, but I may change that to a mechanical diver soon.

Unpopular opinion: The 'BIFL' mindset is becoming a luxury most people can't afford, and that's by design.
It only takes junk to be bought and replaced or trashed to open up and develop a BIFL mindset. Well used 10-40+ years and going strong: fountain pens, old Oster toaster, Zojirushi Rice Cooker, same old silverware, pottery bowls I've thrown, Le Creuset Dutch Oven, Lodge cast iron pan, 8 qt Fagor Pressure Cooker, Classic Victorinox Swiss Army Knife, G-shock watch, butter knife from Goodwill, old repaired Patagonia jackets/vests, etc ... the BILF list goes on and on but it is just stuff that helps make life less hassled, don't have to worry about because the quality lasts or I can repair. Not so much about luxury, just use over time. I think all of these things can be found used, on sale and not full retail.

Most Durable Everyday Watch in 2025?
Tacti-cool is meant to refer to things that are tactical in look only. G Shocks are tanks, and not all of them are bulky. Many of them are considered luxury watches actually.

Most Durable Everyday Watch in 2025?
1. Lots of people will be reccomending you swiss watches, truth is that they are manufactured in China and they are priced as luxury products(what they can get away with, not by the level of finishing, qc etc.) 2. For traditional watches above $100 take a look r/chinesewatches 3. Up to the Gshocks - only meaningfull diffirence between them and regular Casios is use of mineral glass, which may take longer to get scratched up. Outside of that they are the same. Preferably go for models that use EL instead of diodes.

What is your budget? What style watch are you looking for? A $50 G-Shock will serve you well but will it be appropriate for how you will be wearing it? Do you want a dress watch? A sport watch? Quartz movement? Self winding? Best to look at some watches in your price range and figure out what you are looking for and then come back for a recommendation.

Lots of different styles, shapes, and sizes of gshock. Most people that initially resist them for their appearance end up switching over to them when they get tired of buying watches for looks when they actually need durability. I bought a g-shock aviator 10 years ago and just 2 weeks ago i noticed it was 12 seconds late with my phone. Not much loss over that much time. Also it was 400$. Only changed the strap a couple years ago that cost me 10 $ on amazon.

The most durable watch in and around 20 dollars.
One turn off for me was the bulk of g shocks but If you don't mind the branding, the 'baby g' ones are targeted toward women and are in my opinion the actual perfect size of what a g shock should be. I've bought two from eBay in the $20-25 range, absolute favorite watches. Might want to measure your wrists though as I'm 2 holes from maxing the strap and I have fairly average size wrists, not large.

I have that g-shock, and while it's quite good, I wouldn't call it a lifetime purchase. Tbf I wear it for manual work. But the strap broke after about three years, and to get the plastics replaced was almost the cost of the watch. Another three years on, and the bezel plastic is starting to break down. Don't get me wrong, that's pretty darn good for a $50 watch that I wear while digging holes in the sun, and I'll probably replace it with another g-shock when it breaks.

The most durable watch in and around 20 dollars.
>You get what you pay for in terms of durability. That's not entirely true in terms of watches. For absolute budget I'd always recommend a Casio F-91W. Very cheap, very durable. But requires a battery change every few years. Stretch that budget a little higher and get a G-Shock 5610. Radio controlled, solar charged battery. Last watch you would ever buy. It will probably outlive you. Both of these will be most tough, scratch resistant, and accurate than a expensive automatic watch.

Why are we allowing posts that are not in the spirit of BIFL?
Dropping in...I think there is a pretty solid bifl argument for either one tbh. You are correct. But I'd say the Gshock wearer probably has a pretty good bifl watch too - as defined by the sub anyways

Marathon watches - Are They BIFL?
I'd recommend a Hamilton Khaki Field. Either quartz or mechanical depending on what you want. But if you care most about function and don't want an analogue watch you can't beat a G-Shock. Pick whichever most appeals to you and go from there. If you like a smaller watches, I'd recommend a square G-Shock. I like the DW-5600 on my small wrist. There's also a solar powered atomic clock version for about $100. I wouldn't worry about the battery either since by the time it has to change out, a mechanical watch would require maintenance anyways.

Buy one vintage watch, whatever brand - keep it for life!
F91w is good for what is should do, but the light sucks, the band breakable, not water proof enough. Gshocks typically are anywhere from $50+. $100 can get you a real nice gshock that will last a lifetime

Bravo! I have a protrek that I bought probably close to 20 years ago and it's now semi retired sitting on my window sill but still "ticking". The compass ring is a bit loose but that's mostly cosmetic and it still looks fine. I had to replace the band and that's it. It's been through all manner of weather and conditions. I splurged (for me) on a gshock mudmaster a couple years ago and wear it every day and during all activities. These things really are a great brand in my experience.

What are some of the best products/brands you love splurging on?
I worked in jewelry for 40 years. Omega makes a nice watch but it may cost you several hundred dollars to have it cleaned. And it might take months. There are very few people that do watch repair so it would be mailed to repair shop. I would never buy one of these watches. When someone brought one in for cleaning and repair we would always get an estimate first but we would tell the customer to expect 400-800 dollars and it may be 6-10 months before finished. I would go for the G-Shock!

How do you feel about buying things?
Honestly, there are things that are made to endure everything and anything, and things that are not. If you buy a good cashmere sweater, you can surely have it in very decent condition for 10 years. If you wash it correctly, and use it with care, but you obviously shouldn’t bring it hiking or climbing. If you want to protect your phone, there are very good rugged and strong phone cases for that, if you want a watch that you can bring surfing and mountain biking, then buy a G-Shock, it will last you literally forever (with cheap bracelet replacements every 5 years). Every thing has a place and a way it has been built to use and enjoy. If you buy correctly. If you take care of your woods and leathers, clean and oil your metals, protect your electronics. If you wash your clothes correctly, repare them and use the correct ones for outdoor recreation and indoors lounging or house chores… Things will last you a long long time, you will have quality things and you will actually spend less and be more environmentally friendly.
