Any experience with Manduka yoga mats ?
They're supposedly slippery when new and have to be broken in. Jade Harmony is the grippiest one and Manukas main competitor for high end mats but they do have a faint rubber smell that sticks around a long time and wear out faster than a Manduka. Thicker isn't necessarily better for a yoga mat either, as most of what they provide is a clean surface and grip, padding can interfere with stability on some poses and movements which can be just as frustrating as the hard floor chewing on your knees or whatever. For your first yoga mat get something affordable like a Gaiam and reevaluate in a few months. You might see the Manduka you were interested in in class anyway and that gives you a chance to talk to someone about it and maybe make a friend. Also by then you'll know if you need a wider or longer mat than is standard. Anyway lots of people do consider Manduka to be the best ones made but there's no reason to rush into getting one imo.
