They used to be called tissue tees, I think some brands still have them. Thin cotton shirts, like so thin it would be see through on its own but great for light layering for normal everyday wear. I have some from J Crew, banane republic, gap, madewell etc that have help up pretty well. Of course the thinner it is, the less longevity but I have some basic J Crew cotton long sleeve tees that I’ve had for 10+ years.

Basic brands like gap and Uniqlo often have solid basics like this. Pretty easy to find a cotton or blend, depending on the amount of stretchy and tight you actually want/need. I wear mostly gap long sleeves under my sweaters, and they work great! Had them for at least a decade by now.

If you go to a used clothing store, you will probably start to see which baby and kids’ clothes last over time. From my observations, brands like Hanna Andersson, Tea, Boden/Mini-Boden, Joules, vintage Gap, Lands End—also some smaller boutique brands. Look for organic cotton. My trick in 2nd hand shopping is to look for “lots” of clothes on ebay in those brands, so you get a bunch of quality clothes in a bundle and save on shipping. Like search for 5t lot Boden and see what turns up. And make offers!

My kids are tweens/teens now, so my feedback is in retrospect. Boden was my favorite for special occasions. I have many pieces (pinnies and tees) saved. Hanna for pjs and babies. Tea for every day, but it fades. Gap and Cat & Jack for school. Now that my kids are older, I shop a lot at Zara, Abercrombie, and still Target.

my kid is wearing mostly his cousins hand me downs rn, but i generally buy on sale/clearance from h&m kids/baby, old navy and gap baby. old navy for some basics for a cheaper price (on sale) my toddler grows like a weed and is quite tall for his age so he outgrows things very fast. h&m things usually fit a bit bigger/long so i get more use out of them which is what i always prefer. I'm always told by people my son is really well dressed which always makes me happy as i do like to dress him up! A lot of his hand me downs are also from h&m and my nephew IS the best dressed toddler i know haha. I have had pretty bad luck with carters and nike stuff, runs small and shrinks a lot! i only use cold water to clean and low/air dry to dry all my things but they still shrink. for colder weather/thermals the wal-mart thermals are super comfy and the uniqlo warmest ones WILL keep ur kid cozy (they are expensive but imo totes worth it). but def lurk on the apps and check out the stores if youre ever in the mall i always find some deals in the sales/clearances

I try to buy natural fibers (cotton, mostly). Everything holds up well and resells well because everything it is in excellent condition even used.

Hanna Andersson, Primary, Boden, Land's End/L.L. Bean (great for swim and winter outerwear), Gymboree, Gap, and Oshkosh (older especially on the last 3) I go through Poshmark and make bundles. Sometimes you can get another 20-40% discounts from sellers who just want to clear things out. A bit older is best - not only will the sellers normally give higher discounts (the old 'I don't need a 12mo jacket for my 7 year old') but the quality was a lot better across the board. Carters, Old Navy, Garanimals, Gerber are all cheap enough new that it's fine to fill out a wardrobe, but I typically have more issues with tears/wear/not being able to get stains out.

Personally, I find Old Navy kids to be the most disappointing brand out there. I got my 4-year-old sweatpants there less than 6 weeks ago and every single pair is already torn at the knee. If you have Once Upon a Child go there and look for second hand Primary, Hanna Anderson, Boden, and vintage Gymboree etc... take your time feeling the fabrics. I recently got a Gymboree shirt for my oldest that I'm confident will make it through all (soon to be 3) of my boys because it's so thick and well stitched. Look for shirts that feel sturdy. Some old Gap and Old Navy will be good too. I've also bought kids Ralph Lauren and Tommy Bahama second hand and those are durable too.

Another thing to keep in mind is girls cloths are often MUCH poorer quality. Old Navy boys T-shirts are usually pretty durable, but their girls can barely handle 1-2 washes. I find Walmart has better quality for girls clothes than Old Navy. Gap clothes tend to last the best of what I’ve tried, and there are usually tons of them at second hand shops because they hold up longer. We have picked up some [Duns](https://www.officialdunssweden.se/) items when they are on sale from a local children’s shop and they are really nice quality, but honestly, they are kind of excessively nice for how long things are worn 😅.

Target’s Cat and Jack has much better textile quality when compared to Walmart’s Garanimals and Carter’s. They hold up to hot water washes far better than those two brands, with minimal fading. Carter’s was especially disappointing since they are all marked up and double the price. Old Navy is level with Cat and Jack as well, but don’t shop there as much as Target since Cat and Jacks cuts,m and consistency in clothing sizes for my daughter best. A step up from Cat and Jack would be GAP and H&M, I always forget to shop there more often. We don’t budget for much more than those brand prices since they grow so fast. I now have a few pieces from Cat and Jack that have lasted 2-3 years from my now 6yo, that will be put away for her baby sister. All of the Cat and Jacks clothes that she has grown out of has held up well enough to be great quality hand me downs.

You can absolutely find 100% natural materials at Old Navy. You have to be patient and then my super hot take is TO NEVER DRY ANYTHING IN THE DRYER. I have tops from gap and old navy that are 12+ years old because they’ve never seen the inside of a dryer. I got 2 100% cotton cable knit sweaters from Old Navy last year that still look brand new. Again, because I hang them to dry.

Sweaters for sensitive skin
With so much high tech clothing these days for warmth, I see no reason to have anything like wool close to my skin. My sensitive skin can't even tolerate merino next to my skin. My feeling is that if they don't wear it at base camp in climbing expeditions, then why would I buy it? LOL Cotton "sweaters" are very heavy to launder and take forever to day, so they use up a lot of utility dollars as well in dryer. Best way to dress is an underlayer next to skin that is not going to encourage your eczema like soft, breathable, and moisture-wicking, 100% organic cotton, bamboo, silk, and TENCEL (Lyocell). Thsee also reduce friction and heat, helping skin stay cool and dry, while rough textures and synthetics like polyester, nylon, and wool can trap heat and can trigger flares. Then put a layer over that. Can be merino or whatever you like Old Navy, Gap, etc. sell cheap cotton jersey Tees that are thin and about $10.

I have a Gap sweater from around 1990, which I got when I was about 16. It has held up really well and I wear it all the time. It has frayed a bit around the wrist area because it has special stiching that's not as resilient to wear, but I have repaired it easily.

Nowhere near the longevity on the sweater but I have Gap fit and flare dresses from 2013 that I am still wearing to work to this day ! They have retained their fit , colour and vibe even after the decade of use they’ve had . They also push me to stay fit so I can keep wearing them for the next decade .

Quality sweatsuits that don't pill? (For women)
I totally get the Aritzia concern... once a brand gets popular the quality sometimes shifts. Their older CozyAF sweatsuits really were top-notch ( I have one myself), but the newer ones just don’t have that same thick, plush quality and tend to pill faster. I’ve also been trying a few alternatives lately, and here are my findings: Gap’s CloudLight sets and Abercrombie’s Sunday collection are still really solid. Super soft, good structure and they hold up pretty well after tons of washes. But my number 1 favorite is still AUTOMET's 2-piece sweatsuit. It’s got that trendy look and has super soft thick fabric and just feels like it's meant to be expensive. And of course, I wouldn't be letting you know this if it pills. You can get easily get it from Amazon. Handwash when you can, or put it in a laundry bag of some kind. Some form of care is still needed, no matter the brand. But for now, mine still holds up and has yet to pill. No nasty fuzzballs so far!

Seconding u/tjc4. There’s a ton of great stuff out there. I’m wearing a $200-250 sweater I got on sale for under $100. I have a stack of $40-50 secondhand sweaters. My new sweaters are outstanding and $250-300 at full retail? But also, most of the time how you take care of your clothes has more bearing on longevity than materials and construction as long as you aren’t buying SHEIN garbage. My clothes from non-niche Gap, Uniqlo, LL Bean, Banana Republic don’t fall apart because I read labels and avoid high heat in the dryer. There are plenty of other specialty brands out there making great stuff. But good stuff isn’t cheap, and a big part of that is labor costs. Too many people want high quality clothes with sweatshop price tags.

Madewell jeans - not a bifl!
I bought two pairs of madewell jeans they were both around that price range, 2 years ago as well. One might’ve been on sale for under $99. They’ve lasted and I wear them all the time. On the other hand just bought two pairs of gap jeans on sale one for $50 and one for $30 and the quality feels the same. All in all I’ll probably never spend over $100 on jeans again.

Giiiirrlll!!! I too, only purchase jeans from GAP. I am 6 foot and on the thinner side (125lbs). I have stocked up on most of their high rise jeans till the day I l fly from here. I have around 10 pairs, ranging from black, grey and different ‘blue-jean’ colors (lol). I have been buying GAP jeans since the day I turned 16 (in 2000). Their jeans are affordable (I have the app and ONLY buy their items on SALE) as they are comfortable. I like that their TALL size is true to tall (long sleeves, long pants), but their quality went down as well. Just in the past 5 years, I noticed the quality in their sweats has diminished. It’s unfortunate. But the day that ALL of their clothes start falling apart, I will go elsewhere. And I’m a GAP girl, through and through. I buy stuff from there at least once a month; sweat pants in different color. Sweat shirts in different styles; boyfriend cut, girlfriend cut. The only items I haven’t purchased are under garments, socks and swim suits.

How to identify good quality clothing (so you don’t waste your $$$)
I have a sweater from the GAP. I don’t even know how old it is, maybe 20? 15? It worthy like 8 lbs and it’s one of the best made clothing pieces I have ever owned. I remember shopping back in the early 2000s it was still possible to buy quality made clothing at decent prices even at rack stores like TJ Maxx. Good clothing is getting harder to find. I'd also ask in r/capsulewardrobe and r/womensfashion. This really depends on your style and price point. To be honest, I find thrifting vintage to have the best quality, but you might try Banana Republic/Gap, Loft, Talbots, Land's End, and L.L. Bean. Aim for natural fibers (some mix wool with polyester will help with longevity for blazers/trousers) as they tend to wear longer than synthetics. Avoid acrylic. And don't overwash or use high heat to dry. The way you care for clothing has a huge impact on its life-span.

Half of my darn tough socks have holes in them
I found Gap or Gap Factory to be about the same or better quality as these lifetime brands for a fraction of the price. Mine are like 2 years old and have no holes. I'm pretty sure it'll last another 2 easily.

How to identify branded or unbranded clothes or fabrics that are not " fast fashion" and high quality, long lasting?
As a layperson who loves clothes, the biggest thing for me is not considering fast fashion brands and spending a bit more for less. Fast fashion is a strategy, and isn’t the same as inexpensive clothing. Avoid Shein, Zara, and to a lesser extent H&M as their model is to crank out cheap copies of current trends. On the other hand, Uniqlo makes solid basics at lower price points because they do invest in fabrics and designs years in advance of the clothes hitting the market. After that, it’s about learning what you like and experimenting to see where quality and your budget intersect. A lot of people will point to things like fabric weight or stitching, but if you aren’t a professional this is far harder than it sounds. So don’t sweat it too much. If you aren’t a clothes person, then buy what you like and take care of it. Honestly the washer & dryer are more big culprits for clothes falling apart. Heat and agitation break down garments. Places like Walmart or Target may occasionally have decently durable pieces, but you’ll have better luck going upmarket. Places like Uniqlo and the Gap are great for basics. If you can wear J. Crew monitor the sales. Ralph Lauren makes good stuff. Find a piece you love and buy two of it instead of five crappy pieces you don’t enjoy. Brands like Quince that bait consumers either cheap cashmere are crap. I wear Everlane shirts to the gym, but their stuff isn’t great so I only buy them on deep discount. But if you are interested in clothes… Research brands or manufacturers. New brands like Buck Mason or Imogene + Willie are making great stuff, some in the U.S. However, country of origin isn’t as important as people think, because places like China and Vietnam have some incredible factories creating quality garments the U.S. can’t make today. Secondhand & vintage are great sources to experiment and learn. High quality trousers are *expensive*. Most of my trousers new would retail $300-800, but I didn’t pay $100 for a single pair. And you can tell the difference in construction and materials, even as a layperson.

Yea, Old Navy’s been a constant in my shirt drawer for decades. Also just recently got a 100% organic cotton t shirt from the Gap that seems pretty good. We’ll see how it goes

A note about clothing quality
For Gap in particular-and BR is the same IMO- I’d say no later than 2000. Gap Inc brands have a tag inside with the season and year. For denim in general, look for 100% cotton w/o stretch. For clothing in general, with a few obvious BIFL exceptions, pre 2000 will be better quality than new. Someone else in this sub w garment industry expertise will know the why.

Where Does "Buy It for Life" Not Make Sense?
Whoa! I've had cotton undies for 20 years! And many other undies for over 10. I wonder what the scoop is. I don't buy anything particularly special... I'm still hunting for the best value/quality. Currently buying duluth when on sale, and wearlively, and pact. But undies I bought at the GAP lasted 20 years. I don't use harsh detergents in the washer and I hang dry like half of the time. Maybe that's why? (I use Dr bronners sal suds for laundry, before that I used to use arm and hammer no fragrance etcetc) And never ever ever use fabric softener

I’ll add which OP didn’t ask for my all of my period underwear are made from merino wool. A recommendation OP did ask for is I love the Gap all cotton high rise but I will say I don’t put them in the dryer which generally makes stuff last longer.

Women’s clothing, accessories and home decor like Anthropologie but actually good quality?
I’ve started leaning heavily on thrift stores for clothing, almost everything was objectively more well-made before it all went horribly wrong. Lately I have been buying some clothes from Duluth, especially flannel, outerwear, and other clothing for working outside. If Gap ever goes under I have no idea where I’ll buy jeans from, they were always the one company that made jeans that fit my figure. They didn’t leave a dreaded gap between my lower back and the clothing itself. More than anything, properly washing and drying your clothing will make it last longer. Look up EstateSales.net, local garage sales, and furniture consignment shops for home decor that will last, and has personality. My advice on decor is, “Collect, don’t decorate.”

Cotton, Linen, Wool clothing recommendations?
For linen, check out Linen Handmade Studio (Etsy or their own website). Very high quality linen in the pieces I have and lots of dress options. I also own three GAP “boyfriend shirts” that are 100% linen and they’ve held up really well over several years now. For wool, it depends a little bit on what you’re looking for. Sweaters are a great thing to find in thrift/consignment stores. I’ll also shout out Anián, a Canadian brand that uses recycled wool, cotton and cashmere to make new pieces. I have a wool button up from them that I love, is very warm and feels very durable (I only bought it a year ago).

Cotton, Linen, Wool clothing recommendations?
Eileen Fisher in Poshmark or thred up has a lot of linen. I buy my linen tops and dresses off Etsy. I basically found one brand/supplier I like and buy a shirt or two and a dress or something else every year or so. They are all still in great condition. I scour sales and read labels like a hawk. I have 15 year old wool sweaters from GAP that still look nice. I do a sweater wash day every so often, they are all laying flat to dry. The ones that say machine washable, I wash on gentle and still lay flat to dry.
