Why are bikes so unreliable?
As someone from the Netherlands who rides a bike *a lot* I do not related to this at all. We ride bikes everywhere, all the time. I can't even remember when the last time was I had a flat tire or had to "tinker" with my bike. My bike is 14 years old, and the one thing I do is spray some WD-40 on the chain maaaaybe once a year. Just get a decent bike from a decent brand like Gazelle, Batavus or Koga. Edit: (I don't even know if these brand are available outside The Netherlands)
