Why household appliances are no longer built to last
I think sometimes yes, sometimes no. Dyson vaccums very easy to replace. GE dumb dryers most parts are $50 or less and can be done within 1 hour. I think over the past 10 years a lot of manufactuers sold the general public what they were beta testing and we bought it. stick to dumb appliances, esp things that are mechanical and don't have a motherboard and you can keep things for longer than 10 years

Why household appliances are no longer built to last
Our Samsung dryer was on it's 3rd control board in 4 years. So when the 3rd one failed the tech told us he's simply replacing defective boards with new defective borads that will fail within a year so we replaced it with a GE dryer because we never want to buy another Samsung but also because new Samsung dryers do NOT stack on older Samsung washers meaning we had to also replace a fully working Samsung washer. Being bent over from every direction.

Ugh, facts! I’m a baker and I used to rely on my Kitchenaid! My mum’s Kitchenaid was handed down to me & finally crapped out after 7 years but it was at least 20 years old. My new kitchenaid barely made it 3 years 😭 Ps. I ended up going with a GE fridge. I’ll keep ya posted on when it craps out 😆

Had a GE Opal for over 3 years it was great makes really good ice, cleaning it sucks and eventually it kept flashing yellow lights (needs cleaning). I’d run a cleaning cycle its work for a couple days then do it again. Eventually I gave up and got a Frigidaire from Costco. Ice isn’t as soft but it’s working well going on a couple months and seems easier to clean. When it dies just gonna return to Costco.

Basically all of our major appliances. Bosch 800 dishwasher. Cafe induction stove. GE front load washer set with auto-dispensing detergent. And our bidet. The bidet is the only one anyone ever notices. The rest sit there in the background, just casually making my life better every time I use them. It’s never fun to have to replace an appliance. But when you upgrade to one that WORKS, it’s worth every penny.

Dishwasher with no smart features
I really like my GE. Stainless steel interior means it actually dries shit, and it has a garbage disposal that goes on before running. No smart features. Only problem is that even the quick wash takes 3 hours because it incudes the proper drying time

I wanted this too and got all confused from the mixups. Regular fridges will not make nugget ice since the process is different. You either get a countertop nugget maker like the GE Opal or go with a small commercial unit. I priced a few undercounter options and the entry costs were not wild. For most homes the countertop, you can check a lot of options from RestaurantSupply.

I am in the same boat. I have an old Whirlpool freezer top fridge that was given to me. The last couple of months. Ive had to take a steamer to the freezer to clear the ice freezing over the drain line (which cause puddles of water to form in the fridge if I don't clear the blockage) I'm scared to get another Whirlpool because of this but it could very well be a 20 year old fridge! We (house of 2 adults) have a GE profile ventless. No issues with it and love it. The wash and dry cycle is about 2.5 hrs total. Now one thing that caught us off guard is immediately after the cycle finishes the clothes felt damp but like 30 seconds later it’s dry. It’s almost like humidity or steam in the drum made us think it was still damp but that disappears. I will say though don’t over fill the machine.

We got the GE one and replaced our washer with it while keeping the old dryer on the theory that it might not dry everything well. In the year we have had it do you know how many times we have used the old dryer? Once when we had a waterslide bounce house for my son's 6th birthday party. That was about volume, not that it couldn't handle towels. It does take some habit changes... When you take the clothes out they will feel slightly damp. You take them out and shake them as you put them into your basket. This only works well within about 30 minutes of the cycle ending. The alternative is the wrinkle option and forget about them as they tumble for 6 hours.

Over 20 years ago, I purchased an Equator all in one washer/dryer. Our kids were in provincial and national sports and consequently we were doing 10-20 loads a week. That one lasted about 3 1/2 years. Two years ago, we bought a GE combo washer/dryer. It works great, but takes smaller loads than the Equator. In both cases, we saved money over paying to use our building’s laundry machines. Plus, you only use a couple of tablespoons of detergent per load.

We have the GE heat pump. It's great although we have had issues with lint sensors. Wife scrubbed the filter last time and seems to be fixed. It's the only reason I'm not sure about recommending one. Otherwise the thing is awesome. No vents. No gas lines. Runs on 110/120v, standard outlet. Don't have to move clothes over so no mildewy cloths or forgotten loads. Timer helps to run it overnight or when your electricity is cheap. Although it's so cheap to run. I put a meter on it and it was so low I don't even care to meter it anymore. Down side is it's 300+ lbs so near impossible for 1 person to move. Was very difficult for just me to get it over the drip pan, or move it to do flooring. Also not sure about long term use and also long term maintenance. Main one being possibly having to flush it by hand with a wand, basically a full service of inside at the dryer radiator and before that

Owned the GE combo for almost 2 years now, the only annoyance we have had with it is...have to keep the lint filter and the area inside clean or your dry times and dry loads will fail. How often? Hard to tell but we do maybe 3 loads a week and I clean the trap area like once a month sometimes more if we do more linty stuff often (towels). I have a long reach brush and a Dyson attachment to get in there. Other than that the thing has been great! Throw clothes in there forget about it all day while we're out and have clean clothes when we get home. Or we do it at night before going to sleep and wake up to finished laundry without having to swap over. Once in a while a sock gets caught in the rubber gasket area of the door seal and it's not dry...no biggie I just hang dry that one sock.

I have the GE one and it works well. It does take longer than 2 machines IF you move the clothes right when it is done washing otherwise, not a real problem. You need to clean the lint trap and the heat exchanger fins (not difficult). I would get it from Costco on sale with an extended warranty, given the relatively new technology. Also get the pedestal for it at time of purchase so that can be installed as well. It does weigh a ton, so tip the installers well.

My 1947 General Electric fridge.
Very nice and it's super clean. I worked in multi-family housing for 20 years and modern refrigerators are garbage. My best guess is that modern fridges last about 7 years. I still have a select few 20+ year old GEs that are going strong and they were average apartment grade when they were new. Heavier duty coils and compressors, much better refrigerant, granted not environmentally friendly.

I know there is no such thing as a BIFL appliance, but what are your thoughts on this washer? Please no speed queen recommendations, they are too expensive and don't hold enough.
I've enjoyed our GE washer for the past 3 years. Buying from a local appliance store rather than big box retailer can make a huge difference. We bought from a local store, they price-matched Home Depot and offered a 5-year warranty for just a couple hundred bucks more. It has been well worth it as we did have a couple service calls in the first couple years. Called the store we bought it from, had a tech out the next day, fixed it, done and cost nothing.

I need a new washing machine
I hear ya. I have two sets of them. We had Samsung units and they were constantly breaking. I got LG washers and heat pump dryers as replacements and have been happy with them. They don't vent out, so you don't push 9K sqft of conditioned air out of your house with every load. They save a ton of electricity, and the room they are in is now comfortable, vs. an icebox. The newest thing is the all-in-one heat pump units. You dump an entire bottle of detergent into them, and they dose it for you. When it is finished washing, it will automatically start drying. They also take up half the space, so if you wanted to, you could get another unit down the road and effectively have two full sets. You also get redundancy if one breaks. I like the idea of an all-in-one, but the LG units work very well, and I have no intention of replacing them after four years. The downside of the LG is the Euro-sized drums. LG 4000xxx is the top rated machine by both consumer reports and wire cutter. The upgraded model, 5500xxxx, is currently on sale right now at Costco for $699. Electrolux is good, followed by GE profile. Speed Queen's great, if you want a top loader.

I've had a GE gas with the middle griddle and a GE Iinduction. Both with convection. They're both rather cheaply made as to the casing, bottom drawer, oven shelves slide directly on the inner wall, not from a hanger assembly. On the other hand, they function really well. Now that I've tried induction, I'm never going back to gas. Oh, the gas was Home Depot branded Adora, that's GE for real.

I have a GE and was floored to find out the replacement filter is $50 and requires replacing q6months. And they now have a chip that prevents you from using an off brand filter. Otherwise I do love my fridge.

I had a samsung fridge, and can wholeheartedly agree not samsung. My parents switched from samsung to GE, and now I also have [this GE fridge](https://www.reddit.com/user/genaCaribou/comments/1n84xlc/french_door_fridge_that_keeps_everything_fresh/) at home, and I can actually recommend it. Loads of space for storage and proper organization, easy to clean it, love the double doors so much, and the freezer is massive which is a must for us since we do loads of meal prep. In general, I've heard and read a lot of good things about GE lasting and being reliable.

Parents need all new kitchen appliances
$5k budget might be kind of tight, but it could possibly be doable. I bought kitchen appliances in 2019 for around $5250 from Best Buy’s kitchen/bath retailer Pacific Sales. The only items I didn’t buy that were floor models were a GE Profile 5 burner cooktop (this was $1100, I think), and GE Profile Microwave and trim kit for about $425. The GE Profile fridge (which I honestly wouldn’t buy again) was $1500, the GE Cafe built in oven (which I adored) was $1800, and the Kitchen Aid dishwasher was $450. I ended up selling the house in 2020. The fridge was really the only disappointment as the water line got clogged and leaked out the bottom fridge because it was cause a layer of ice to form in the bottom freezer (at the time it was a known GE fridge problem with no fix other than to have the line cleaned). In my new house I did have to buy a Whirlpool fridge from Costco and I have been happy with it. It replaced a Kenmore Elite (which was a rebadged LG) with a bad condenser. I won’t buy an LG appliance product. My big kitchen splurge was a Miele dishwasher, I bought the highest home model available that was being discontinued from Pacific Sales for $1500. It is absolutely worth it. I went back there to buy the same or similar Kitchen Aid dishwasher I had in my old house and I hated the new third row set up and Miele’s just worked better. I had a GE Profile traditional in my old house for 14 years before I replaced it (it came with the house so it was closer 16-17 years old really) and honestly it was still working but my kitchen was small and I gained more space by putting in a cook top and a built in oven. I would buy another GE cooking product. I also bought a new GE Profile microwave for my new house.

I've been using a GE profile Opal 2.0 nugget ice maker for about a year, and honestly it's one of the best countertop ice makers in USA for home use. It's not completely silent but it makes nugget ice that everyone in my family loves. Cleaning is pretty simple too compared to some portable ice machines i've tried before.

How are ventless dryers?
We have the GE heat pump one and love it. Haven't had to re-wash damp laundry left too long since we got it. The only weird thing that takes a little getting used to is fluffing the clothes and pulling them out a few at a time as they go into the basket. Otherwise they hold onto a little bit of moisture, but once you give them a shake on the way out of the machine it vanishes. It's weird, and took a little while to feel normal.

How are ventless dryers?
Had a rental for a few months with the GE Profile all-in-one that had ventless heat pump. Overall it was a very good machine that made me a believer. I had an all-in-one in Australia that took forever to dry clothes and was overall pretty shitty. The only problem I had with the GE was the lint filter. It used a two stage filter: a carbon foam filter on top of a regular lint filter. It was kind of a pain to clean in-between loads. I am sure there was an easier way to clean it out than what I was doing but that’s the only com I had for the machine.

Only one? We bought our GE range with the house over 20 years ago, but it was built in ‘93. We bought our Maytag refrigerator in ‘98 or so. I have a Zojirushi rice maker from ‘92 and a KitchenAid tilt-head stand mixer from ‘94, in case they count as appliances

Looking for a fridge… but can a fridge even be BIFL?
Sadly, I think this is one of those "buy the simplest one you can get from a good brand and hope you get lucky" things. Personally, I've had best luck with Samsung and Norcold, but my GE is about 7 years old and it's still pretty good.

1991 GE Superadio II, a superb budget AM powerhouse that operates on a single IC. Amongst the best analog radios for DX'ing!
I get about a full year from the regular battery setup. I have two of these, great radios. When I go camping with my family, it's the only radio we have that still recieves multiple stations, on FM and especially AM.

LG refrigerators, are they any good?
just to add my 2 cents to the subject. I'm korean and will never buy a LG house appliance ever again.. it took 7 years for my compressor to go out.. which sadly seems a bit longer than other comments I saw here... they did replace the compressor for free since it was within the 10 year warranty period. just not happy about the 350 dollar installation cost. but for sure next time. it's going to be GE, may tag or whirlpool

This is the exact same one that i have in my kitchen. It works perfectly, and was my great grandmothers before she passed. The sides of ours are a fake wood grain and it came with a bacon tray that we still use!

We went through two fridge ice makers before giving up and getting a countertop GE opal ice maker, and it’s been a game-changer. Makes enough ice for the whole family, pebble ice is awesome for drinks, and it’s super easy to clean. Highly recommend going standalone!

The most reliable ice maker brand?
1. We have no idea what you mean by ice quality. 2. We have no idea what you mean by decent volume. 9/10 counter units spit out ice into a lukewarm box to melt quickly, so if that is your idea of a good time, that's your form factor. GE Opal is most recognized BIFL one. Otherwise, buy a standalone ice maker of your budget/use case and go about your day as there is no BIFL leader.

What products used to be well built back in the day but now are low quality?
Refrigerators! I have a GE refrigerator from 1994 that still works like a tank. Not a single thing is wrong with that refrigerator today and there's been zero repairs. I also have a kitchen aid high end refrigerator from 2018 that's had countless service calls and things break with it. Once I call for service, it takes about a month for a service person to come in. Then it takes another 1-2 months to order the part and for it to come in. Idk how they built refrigerator in the 90s,but the fact that it's working in mint condition today is crazy reliable engineering.

Samsung washer and dryer literally fell apart machine died so I upgraded to Speed Queen.
My husband and I were perusing around Home Depot a few months back and walked by a Bosch refrigerator. We did a double take and came back to it. Almost $5k originally, the tag was just over $1k. We starting looking it over. Not a thing wrong or missing. Loaded it up and took it home. We were not even looking for a fridge. It was such an amazing price for the unit. It is now the garage fridge that will be moved inside when our 22 year old GE Monogram goes out. (Hopefully no time soon) we have really come to love Bosch products!!

GE appliances, though not perfect, are reasonably reliable and not difficult to repair if you are able to do basic troubleshooting and can use hand tools. Parts are typically easy to find and not as expensive as the higher priced appliances.

Thinking through induction stove and longevity
Induction has been the most common standard in Japan in the last 20 years or so. It’s much more durable than you’d expect. As soon as we got our first house, we replaced the cooktop with induction for safety reasons. The halogen bulbs in the range hood emit more heat than induction cooktop (as soon as it’s turned off). There’s a child lock on it. My entire household has ADHD, I’m not risking a house fire 😅 Get a KitchenAid, GE, or Whirlpool mid-to-high-range model. It’s a joy to use it once you get used to cleaning it.

Is getting an ice maker on a fridge as risky as I've heard?
This is an older thread but I was surprised to hear how many people are afraid of refrigerator water lines. :-) I’ve owned several homes over the last 30 years, and several refrigerators, and have never had a water line break. Am I just lucky? I do agree that it’s probably best to go with braided stainless steel, as critters will chew through the plastic ones if given the chance. Anyways I actually came across this thread because I was shopping for a countertop ice maker and I’m looking for reviews. Looking to buy a good quality box fan to have on at night
are you planning to use the fan every night? cuz if u are then the main things to look for are reliability, noise level, and how well it moves air so it doesnt disturb your sleep for long-term use, a lot of people here recommend vintage metal fans like old GE or Toastmasters. they last forever and move serious air, but they’re loud and kind of a pain to find. air king is another good shout if you're okay spending more, they’re p loud too, but built to last for a longass time also the [hurricane classic](https://grassrouteguide.com/dp-B06XGSJ94B) is actually not bad at all cuz its pretty quiet, solid airflow, and doesn’t feel like it’s going to rattle itself apart in like a month like most of the new ones do worth every buck kinda. whatever u get just be prepared to have a couple of nightmares in the first few nights, final destination style

Got so tired of my old cheap range.
Just to add from my experience from cooking Chinese food…We had a 30” GE profile induction and although I couldn’t use my wok on it, my frying pan got hotter than it does on our wolf (60” six burner, gas, griddle, double oven ridiculous monstrosity). I don’t think the wolf outperforms the induction even though I can use the wok on it. If we remodel the kitchen, I’m going back to a 30” induction and a separate wok burner.

What’s one item you bought that way outperformed its price?
1993 GE clock radio/alarm/cassette. Still works 32 years later. 1997 Craftsman self propelled lawnmower with 6.25 horsepower Tecumseh engine. Other than replacing a dead ignition coil at 17 years old, it's still works flawlessly with no repairs. Still on the original blade and belt. 1999 Honda Accord LX 4 cyl 5 speed manual built in Japan. Bought new and still the daily driver. 1984 Toyota truck my dad bought new and passed down to me in 1996. Other than regular scheduled maintenance, it has only had a water pump, clutch, and clutch master cyl replaced. All original, down to the 41 year old power steering fluid. 1975 Maytag washer and dryer pulled out of the scrapyard for free almost 20 years ago. Still kicking. This unassuming little A/C unit lasted me 16 years
Unfortunately not, it didn't cool when testing it before installation this year 😕. Just got its replacement, a GE 'Profile' 10K BTU unit! Turns out GE Appliances is owned and operated by Haier since 2016, best I can tell this is functionally one-in-the-same with Haier so hopefully this new unit will last another 16+ years. The new product probably won't last regardless, but you can get your investment to last at least. The trick like you found is to actually get the extended product support plan for these when you buy one. I did it through Walmart, an extra year I think for $7 or something. They don't fix or replace it, just call and they email you your cost back as store credit to go buy a replacement (and buy the plan again). Over a decade, I think I got up to new unit #6 for the cost of one, before finally landing on a basic GE model that's going strong for 5-6 years now. I remember my grandma had an old brown wood-paneled looking one from the 70s that was still going at probably 30+ years.

I’ve been pretty lucky and have only bought 2 in the last 15 years. I bought my GE when the Frigidaire had a recall. We still use the Frigidaire to help dry the basement after heavy rains. It is very damp here so I’ve always had the primary unit plumbed into a drain and they run 3/4 of the year and many/most hours of a day.

OTOH, I live in an apartment with the most basic cheap GE and it’s even a smaller than standard size and I’m shocked how well it’s held up. It’s 10 years old and i run it at least daily if not multiple times a day because it’s so small. The only problem is a hole in the utensil basket which our maintenance person replaced. It’s loud AF though.

honestly check your local thrift stores or estate sales, there's usually a surplus of 1980's alarm clocks as they were built to last forever! we've found several still in their original packaging even! no frills but still cute/timeless design, have had 0 issues with any of ours- we have a couple 80's Spartus branded ones as well as GE!

GE monogram stuff is great. Wolf cookers are awesome. Looks like you want a cooktop, oven separate. I have the dual fuel gas top and electric oven range that has been perfect for 20 years. The most used burners ignition element stopped working for a bit but it just needed a good cleaning but that’s me being messy. I don’t use a microwave much but I have the GE microwave/convection cooker that people seem to like.

Electric Kettle with Plastic-Free internals?
If you're open to buying vintage, the GE K48 series of electric kettles are great. The only plastic on them is the handle and the socket where the plug goes in. They're all made in Canada, I believe. You can find them on ebay for around $50. I have a K48B from what I assume is the early 1960s and it's a tank. It'll get water up to a boil very quickly. It looks pretty amazing, too.

Frigidaire stand up deep freeze, dates to the 90's but I bought it used 5+ years ago from the OG owner for $80. Use it daily though I appreciate the reminder that it could use a defrost. We just got rid of our 20 year old washer last year. (Hotpoint brand, think we lucked out on that one). The fridge is an GE French door model from 2011 according to the sticker, that came with the house. But we love it. Pretty typical household use on all items. Family of 4.

That absolutely ancient GE electric handheld mixer that kept popping up a ton on here a while back. Except mine finally died a couple months ago after many, many years of weekly use. Thing is older than I am by a longshot, but it was a damn good mixer. Other than that, it's a smoker from the mid 70s that my dad bought brand new for his restaurant back then. I couldn't tell you the name as its worn off, so I'd have to ask him. I repaired it and we regularly do smoked turkey & chicken, and I *love* using it to make my own jerky.

Samsung and LG are the predominant used units for sale in this area. Newer designs. Wonder why? Mine failed after 2 years. My GE garage fridge has lasted for 15 years now.

Does anyone regret spending more for SpeedQueen?
I’ve had speed queen for almost 10 years and other than a failed temp switch on the washing machine it’s been great. The warranty covered the part and the repair guy said there was a batch that seemed to fail, that was 6 years ago and it’s been flawless since and they get used 4-5 times a week. My parents have GE, I think they have had them 7 years and they have had a great experience with them. It’s far more complicated but my mom loves the app which tells her when the machine is done. The only complaint they have had is that the app isn’t great and won’t work for a few weeks and then it works fine for months, it’s not a huge complaint but I would be annoyed if it was my favorite feature wasn’t working consistently.

Does anyone regret spending more for SpeedQueen?
If you’re looking at speed queen I would assume you want a washer that fills with water and has an agitator. I got a GE 3-4 years ago that does the same and love it. Will never go back to a HE washer. Compared it to speed queen (which was reporting some issues at the time) and thought it was better for us because it was <$400 and we don’t have a lot of laundry. It doesn’t have the biggest drum on the market but it handles everything I’ve thrown at it like a rock star. May want to look into this!

My house came with a 25 year old fridge. It just finally had to be replaced. We went with a GE, freezer on the bottom, and ice maker inside of the freezer.

Look up some recent videos on Youtube with technicians talking about what brands to buy. We just replaced a 20 year old Kenmore, still worked but I had replaced the icemaker twice and it was on the fritz again. We bought a GE based on the videos I watched and have been very happy with it in the short time we've owned it. Water and ice through the door was a must for us so I'm sure that puts it at higher risk of failure and also GE now puts RFID tags on their filters and if you don't replace it with a filter with that tag on it (or figure out some way around it, again look up videos on youtube), anything that runs through the filter stops working until you do

I tested refrigerators and other appliances for nearly 30 years. Samsung and LG have serious longevity issues, problems with compressors, icemakers, etc. and parts are difficult to come by and expensive. I would purchase a GE model without an icemaker as that is often the number one repair problem with any refrigerator but overall the brand is very reliable. We had our first GE refrigerator for more than 30 years and just replaced it when we redid our kitchen, then added a table top ice maker to use as needed. It’s unlikely the new one will last that long as they are no longer made for longevity but it’s been six years without an issue. Good luck.

What’s one product you bought that has lasted forever and was totally worth it?
So many things... \- I bought a craftsman circular saw when I built my house 40 years ago and it burned out the first day. I replaced it with a Makita saw that I still use to this day. \- I also bought a Robot Coupe food processor around the same time and it's still chugging away. \- Sturdy oak furniture - had it all my life. \- Good pots and pans and cookware. (Calphalon, Le Creuset, cast iron) \- Weber grill \- I have a GE refrigerator in my garage that's probably 70 years old and still runs fine. ($35) And no, they don't make them like that anymore.

Terrible Whirlpool washer experience
Whirlpool service is ***TERRIBLE***. They are severely understaffed and overwhelmed, and just getting ahold of a person is hard. Getting ahold of a knowledgable person is harder. I would not buy another Whirlpool product nor could I recommend one, as their service will literally drive you to drink. My guy at my local appliances store steered me to GE in part due to their very strong service network. I havent needed any service on my GE washer/dryer, but I bought a GE freezer and a shelf in it was broken. It took 15 minutes to call someone and explain to them the problem and send them a picture of the broken piece, and several days later a replacement part was on my doorstep (and they even sent me other spare parts beyond the one I needed...and I have an extra shelf now).

Terrible Whirlpool washer experience
We have a cheap GE from home Depot scratch and dent. Got it for $350. It's going strong 4 years later. We didn't want to drop $1400 on a speed queen. So far, no regrets. Sometimes, you select right and are just unlucky. Regarding balancing, did he maybe mean that your washer isn't level? We had that issue until we bought these foam pads to put under the washer feet which made it level and reduced vibrations.

What’s one product you bought that has lasted forever and was totally worth it?
GE Super Radio 2. Given to me by my grandfather and will definitely last the rest of my life. Great AM and FM range, and the speaker is very powerful. I modified mine with a lithium ion battery and added Bluetooth, and it is a quite durable and loud bluetooth speaker/radio. Puts modern portable speakers to shame. If you're into modding electronics I definitely recommend

I saw this too. We had an 18 year old Frigidaire with an ice maker in the door. The ice maker leaked at one point, so the previous homeowner disconnected it but the fridge kept trucking. We went to a local appliance store and got the same model. We had such odd stairwells that we had two options: Frigidaire or GE. The appliance place said they repair more GEs than Frigidaire, and we found good reviews of this model. Still early, but four years later, it's going strong. Ideally, we would have gotten a Bosch. But they didn't make a narrow and thin enough model.

This! Our Samsung fridge had almost every fridge door shelf crack or break over the 12 years we had it, and it was absurdly expensive to order replacements (we ended up duct taping them). This time around I went with a mid-range GE in hopes of avoiding this!

I bought a very basic GE fridge recently, and my young boy broke one of the plastic shelves on the door. I was able to go online and find the part, order it and have it in my hands straight from GE in less than a week. For under $30. That is something to think about, parts availability.

I recently spent a ridiculous amount of time researching fridges and the one thing I saw over and over again was to avoid the in-door ice maker. Any fridge that makes ice in the refrigerator part of the appliance will fail early and often from my research. We ended up getting a GE with an internal water dispenser and an ice maker in the freezer due to our limited space and budget.

When it comes to fridges that last, there is one general rule: It must be white and boring. Simple no frills. And be from a reputable maker with a long heritage in the USA or Europe. Don't buy Korean or Chinese.

Old Kenmore's are about as reliable as appliances get. Modern Samsung or LG are awful. GE, kitchenaid, and a few more brands still bake basic fridges that should last much better.

Time to upgrade toaster from a 60+ year old GE to a new Cuisinart. The GE still works it's just getting a bit flaky, needs a new spring and where do you get parts for a 60+ year old toaster? BUT I'll keep the GE for when the Cuisinart dies and will find a spring.
My cuisinart toaster crapped out after a couple years so I bought a vintage GE one. Been working great for years now. This is my go to with kitchen appliances. The newer stuff is made to fail so I have been buying older kitchen items. I bought a 1980’s swing away can opener after going through a few modern ones. It is so much more solid than the new stuff

GE A10 T17 toaster, close to 50 years old and still used daily. It was my grandmothers until she passed away and I ended up with it. Don't make them like this any more.
My prior GE microwave I ended up giving away when I moved. I loved that thing! It worked great, but I had purchased a house with an over the stove built in microwave. My older countertop GE worked better. My neighbor needed a new one, so it all worked out (and my neighbor helped me pack and move and lots of other things, so I gave her that and a couple of other items she could use).

I am not saying electronics can't be BIFL but most aren't because we want "feature". We have maybe 6 pieces of electronics that made it past 10 years that we still use regularly. Zojirushi Neuro Fuzzy Rice Cooker Zojirushi Micom Water Boiler & Warmer Vitamax from Costco years A Bothers Laserjet/Scanner combo GE Cafe Series Fridge from like 2013, no Wifi nothing special other than it boils hot water DD-WRT based gigabyte router (no wifi) The common thing these 6 things all do well is that they do their primary function extremely well and based on well established protocols. There no bell and whistles on top.

Washer/Dryer recommendations. Narrowed it down to Speed Queen or LG
So true about LG. I had the GE front loader vent fresh then an LG. The LG is such a piece of junk that leaves clothes either stinky or with detergent residue. On towel mode to unsuccessfully get residue out cycles are almost 2 hours. Basic ge vent fresh always 55 minutes, clean and fresh. Which speed queen did you purchase? The SQ dryer too?

Caulk brand that isn’t porous and is durable for bathroom?
100% pure silicone if not being painted. I prefer GE supreme (not advanced) for kitchen and bath for inside and window and door for outside. Big stretch for everything else. It’s paintable. It cost $9 a tube as opposed to Alex plus at $3 but it’s worth it You get into some specialty stuff for specific thinks like sika sealants and lock tight adhesives but that’s for the heavy DIY guys.

I remember my grandparents had an old GE refrigerator from the late 50’s that was still running after they passed away around 2000. Personally I have an igloo red and white lunch box/small cooler that I still use that I got in 1996.
