What’s the BIFL item that you love but everyone around you thinks is ridiculous?
I carry a small gerber box cutter in that little useless watch pocket that most jeans still have. I use it for all kinds of stuff. Need to open a box or annoying clamshell package? Have an annoying thread hanging off of your shirt? Got an annoying hangnail that keeps catching on stuff? Someone else ask if you have a knife? Box cutter!

Looking for a BIFL multi-tool
I will chime in on this. I have a 20 year old leatherman and it is sitting on the desk next to me. It has been through a lot. I've also used Gerbers and SOGs, but I tend to lose them more than break them. For his 10th birthday, I bought my son an EDC kit, and went with Gerber. But those three brands last forever.

Looking for a BIFL multi-tool
I had my Gerber multi-tool, from 1993 until 2024 when the main blade finally snapped off. The closest thing to it now is probably the [MP-600](https://www.gerbergear.com/en-us/shop/multi-tools/all-multi-tools/multi-plier-600-stainless-needlenose-g07530n) My Gerber was identical with the exception that the design of the blade was slightly different. 31 years of use was a damned good investment.

Looking for a BIFL multi-tool
Most of the Leathermans will be a great buy, the hardest part is which one, and how big. I personally went through the Leatherman phase, the Gerber phase and landed on SOG tools. Mine was a larger heavy on that I wore daily on my job as a video tech, the best part was that I could open the knife blade one handed and without fully opening the pliers to get to it. Also compare warranties, and availability of parts. I don’t’t know about the others, but SOG sells parts right on their site, and they are easily repaired and tools swapped out. I dropped mine into a leaf pile that was later burned, and i found it while it was still too hot to pickup. The internal spacer was plastic, and had melted, but the whole thing still functioned. I sent it in for the rebuild/repair service, and they determined that the “heat treatment” that it received in the burn pile compromised the metal enough that they determined it was no longer fit for use so sent me a new one.

What's a purchase under $50 that has genuinely improved your daily routine?
I got a money clip that has a built-in blade. (Gerber GDC). I don't know if it's BIFL yet, but having something to cut with is a life-changer. Other people can get away with a leatherman or full-on belt knife, but my muffin topping makes that uncomfortable. *It's not for self-defense.* 90% is opening packages. The other 10% is split between a bunch of things that are very situational, but the blade in your pocket is closer than the blade way over there in your kitchen/tool chest.

Not much to go on... a good first step is what is your primary use for a multitool, because different designs focus on different things. Your priority may be one handed blade opening, or fitting in a small pocket. For me, my most common tool is pliers, and I often need them when I'm already holding the something with one hand, so my priority is one-handed-opening pliers. There's a few more brands that do that now but twenty years ago the Gerber Multi-Plier was the only option, and it hasn't let me down since. There's an MP400 and a larger but easier to find MP600; IMHO the MP600 is too big for everyday pocket carrying.

Gerber Dime on car key rings. Victorinox Huntsman with wood scales in the pocket most of the time. Gerber MP600 if the situation calls for it, or I have the pocket space. I'm less into the Skeletool type designs personally, it feels like a gap in options that I just never would use. My Huntsman has more tools that I use more often and is smaller/lighter, and if I need pliers then I'd rather take the MP600.

There have been some periods where I've carried other knives on a daily basis, but I keep coming back to this one. It's super light, and before they kicked up the sensitivity after 9/11, I used to be able to take it on planes without setting off the metal detectors. I also have an Emerson CQC-7 from the late 90s. I carried that every day for awhile, and it was fantastic, but I don't wear jeans ever day anymore and it's a bit heavy to have in my shorts pocket all the time.

What did you wish you had at 21?
As an engineering student, perhaps a quality, reliable computer, if you don't have one. It's definitely not buy it for life. But, if you don't graduate into a job, nerds like us can use a computer for income to keep you afloat. We're probably not talking about a car-level purchase, but if we are, a reliable car is housing with minimal rent cost. With a mid-level set of hand tools you can fix most things in every day life. Or a Leatherman (or Gerber or other quality multi-tool) will handle the large majority of minor things. A wide-bottoom, oven safe, tri-ply stainless steel saucepan. You can cook everything from steak to pizza to pasta. some will say cast iron. That stuff is heavy and a hassle to clean. Steel is dishwasher safe and will easily last your lifetime if you don't abuse it. A job... Seriously. Can they get you a job? As someone who graduated stem summa cum laude, and then couldn't find work, and going myself living in my car- a job is what you actually need at this point.

My experience with it was stellar, but I never had a purpose for it so I sold mine. A few such as the twitch passed the test of time, but far more often I had (foldeing) knives wear out due to grit, and so on. In the army I've been given and issued tons of knives, it's always nice getting a new one; they're not expected to be bifl.
