  And so my journey with the Muhle R89 razor begins, along with Astra green blades.

  Congrats on your foray into wet shaving. Beware, the rabbit hole goes deep. My one recommendation for now, would be to pick up a vintage Gillette safety razor (Tech, Super Speed, Fat boy, etc). That razor you bought, while a great shaver, is made of zamak (zinc alloy), which will break if dropped in the sink. Vintage Gillettes are made of brass (nickel-plated), and built like tanks. They are great shavers as well. You can often find a Tech on ebay, or in an antique store, for under $20. It's fun!

  I would like to know which BIFL purchase has saved you the most money or hassle over time?

  Double edge safety razor from Gillette circa the 1950s. I think they call them “fat boy”s. I used to get razor burn and hate shaving. Now it's like a fun treat. Plus you save lots of money and you don't throw away a lot of plastic disposables.

  I wholeheartedly agree. I have a basic Gillette razor and small shaving cream spray can (that fits in your palm) that have been with me for the past 2.5 years. I get that I should be replacing the blades but they are sharp enough even after all that time. The can itself feels like a bottomless pit. (To be fair, I don't sport a clean shaved look and only shave around the cheeks, chin to shape my beard)

  Disposable razor blade and old-school Gilette shaving cream (the white foamy kind). Merkur double edge works great for the heavy stuff, but for a smooth final pass, the Sensor 2 disposable razor is amazing--and so forgiving. I can finally get shaves like they have in the commercials.

  Something you didn’t expect to be BIFL but outlasted your expectations?

  I don’t know if this counts because I didn’t buy it (it was free) and I replace the blades often, but over 30 years ago, Gillette sent me a razor on my 18th birthday. It looks a bit grimy, but it’s travelled the world with me and kept me well groomed almost every day since! Kind of a smart business model for all the replacement blades I’ve used over the years but I’m also impressed how well it’s held up for a simple plastic handle with some movable pieces that I feel like would probably be prone to breakage or failure if constructed under current conditions.

  Women’s Body Razor Recs

  I made the switch to a Edwin Jagger Double Edge Safety Razor a few years ago and gone are the days of irritation. It takes a while to feel confident with a safety razor but i have in 2 years only ever cut myself once and that was because of silly user error, they are so much safer than i ever expected. Edwin jagger do a long handled version for Ladies, and i like to use the Gilette silver blue blades which i find gentler, and extremly cheap to replace.

  Whats some item you bought online that earned BIFL status?

  I love my safety razors. I originally got into them because I hated that I couldn't fully clean my disposable razors between uses very easily and also because the replacement blades are pennies each (you can find 100 blades for $5-$10) , and a quality safety razor will absolutely last a lifetime. There's a reason there's a thriving market for vintage Gillette razors from 1960 or earlier- the build quality is outstanding. I've become a collector. But collecting isn't for everyone, and there's plenty of good, brand new modern safety razors too.

  In drips and drabs, got a Swiss Army Knife (Victorinox) when young--had it since (50 years), zippo lighter ( 45 years), Same two original razors--a straight edge and Gillette. Tools were not the same--had to get cheap to pay bills , replace as they broke. Cooking gear sort of the same---maybe you move? maybe you just need to cook, eventually when living the same place buy the best you can. Never cheap gardening tools/farming implements. That might have been the turn key event--

  What's a purchase under $50 that has genuinely improved your daily routine?

  Change the blades you’re using. Astra I’ve seen recommended a lot do a really good job, but they’re harsh. Someone recommended Gillette blades to me and while I don’t prefer them because it feels like it takes me longer to shave, they’re way better for sensitive skin. Sometimes I’ll switch to them if my skin is having a sensitive day.

  What's One Product You Bought Thinking It Would Be Temporary But It Ended Up Lasting You For Year's?

  I bought a double edge safety razor just to try out since the blades were way cheaper than the Gillette cartridges. It must be going on about 8 years now and has no signs of ever breaking. I bought a pack of 100 blades for less than 10 bucks and that should last me years as well.

  I have a small collection of Gillettes from a 1940s GI issue through the 90s. They all work just as well as the next and I have had zero issues with them. I don’t think I spent more than $25 on one, most of them either hand-me-downs or $10-$20 at antique stores.

  Find an old Gillette at a secondhand store, rummage sale, etc. I have my grandfather's Gillette from WWII and it works as well today as the day it was made. You can find these for under $20 on a regular basis. Blades are cheap. Just go SLOWLY the first few times and moisturize the hell out of your face afterward. The shave is a little harsher than your $7, five-blade cartridge of today ... but once you feel how much cleaner the shave is with the old one, you likely won't go back. One PSA: absolutely DO NOT shave your boy bits with an old school safety razor.

I go around a month between blade changes (when I notice it's snagging), and am nearly to the bottom of a box of 100 I bought in 2016 for $12 on Amazon, which puts me a smidge over a dollar a year for consumables. I just shave with water after a hot shower, and the handle is a Gillette from the '50s that I bought on eBay for ten bucks ages ago.

  I have the same razor and I gave up traveling with it. That damn thing got me searched 100% of the times I traveled with it, apparently it looks like a weapon in the scanner. These days I just travel with disposable Gillette razors that I can just throw away.

  To be honest, a Gillette Mach 3 is great if you clean it correctly. I don't live by the sea so I can't generalize but I clean my disposable heads after each use and dry them right away, and I can safely use them for 6 months at the least.

  What are the best sleep masks these days?

  Stay away from synthetic ones. They will seem super comfy at first but will eventually ruin your eye area. You might even get rashes or acne with the buildup that the artificial stuff causes. I've always liked the ones made from organic cotton or silk tho. Much gentle + they don't press hard enough on the skin but still keep the light out. Buttt that brings them a bit on the pricier side too. Some are priced around $50 which is lowkey insane af(can't afford), a bit cheaper but in the same category would be the [fusion5 mask](https://econsumerproductreviews.com/dp-B09MJFVC72) imo(basically a dupe). Quality is still really good tho, it's got silk instead of foam like buckys and since it's the mulberry kind, it feels really light. Also if you've got sensitive skin issues, this should help with its hypoallergenic stuff. Should last you a good amount of years too.

  My wife bought me a knock off Merkur handle lots of years ago. It broke a few months back, and I went to a local antique shop I knew had some razors and bought the one that looked in best condition. It turned out to be a Gillette from the 1930s, plated in 24k gold. Really light, short handle, with the teeth for a more aggressive cut, super nice cut, and for just $20. Just got some Wilkinson Sword blades for it and I love this thing.

  What are your “keep it for life” hacks?

  A good safety razor should not rust. Look at getting a three-piece instead of an adjustable. A cheap Zamak (Zinc Alloy) such as an Edwin Jagger will do most people fine for an intro to safety razors. The softer metal is not as durable so you do need to baby them. You can also find good stainless steel for a decent price - RazoRock has some stainless models at a good price. Those will last a lifetime of abuse. For the adjustables, if you want one that will last a lifetime, look for a vintage model - The Gilette Fatboy is very popular and can be found for a somewhat decent price on trading forums/ebay etc. Something current, like the rockwell T2 it get's much more expensive.

  Get a double edge razor and a big box of blades. Try an assortment until you find a type you like, then stock up. As for handles, I like the Merkur, but the old Gillettes are good too. Spend maybe 30 to 70 bucks on a decent handle and you'll just need the cheap, long lasting blades for as long as you shave. Forget about those Mach 5 cartridges that cost $40 a pack and last 3 days each...

I've seen some from the 1920s, a hundred years old and still still in good shape. There are even places that you can have them restored and re-chromed so they look & feel brand new. I bought a used Gillette black beauty from the 1970s that was actually made with a plastic handle and it still works great without getting restored. I bought a new [Viking](https://www.amazon.com/VIKINGS-Emperor-Adjustable-AUGUSTUS-Vintage/dp/B07K254P2J) adjustable and butterfly open and really like it, but it is hefty like a Gillette Fat Boy. But a safety razor is a great way to save money. You can buy assorted packs of razor blades on Ebay to see what brand you like. The brand I like I bought 100 blades for $10 and have seen them as cheap as $8. If you want to buy a safety razor I'd start out with an adjustable. This way you can tell if you need an aggressive or mild setting. The market for used Gillette razors has been steadily increasing for the past few decades. You can easily resell them and might even make a profit if for some reason you don't like the one you bought. I'm not sure what a light duty razor means to you.

  Unpopular opinion in this sub, but I will advocate the opposite. Stay away from safety razors. I have shaved every day since I have been like 12. I have never had a worse shave. I’ve been gifted a safety razor multiple times in my life and purchased one. Every blade tore my face up. If you do decided to get the safety razor with those incredibly cost efficient blades, invest in a great, not good lathering facial product for your shaving cream and only go one stroke to get a shave. Dont go over multiple times or you are on your way to ingrown hair land. Cheers to the Gillette razor. I had and lost that one when in highschool. I give Gillette credit for using the same blades all these years later!

  Second this been using it for over a year now. 50 pack of blades for like 7$, about 6-7 shaves a blade. Also get the good shaving cream that you mix with water lasts so much longer and feels way smoother of a shave than the normal stuff.

  Not true. I use the same gillette razor as OP to shave. The key is to a) shave in the shower, with shaving cream. Piping hot shower, shaving cream, and clean the razor when you're done. The blades last a very long time if you do that.

  Fortune yea. I use Gillette too, not heaviest beard grower but use it often multiple times per week. Last time I bought refill was I think over a year ago, and still have about half left. Do I always instantly renew after the slightest dull no, is it necessary? No. So in the end I spend about 15 euros a year and for me as well the handle is as old as the first time I shaved. Further, I don't want to cut myself and while I heard you can do it properly with experience quite sure these are more robust and have more safety for the general person. For a possible say 10 euros a year saving if that, I won't change something that works perfectly.

My sis gave me a gym bag I wanted once, it eventually wore out but even now when I work out and use the one I bought that I replaced it with, which is different, my brain still reminds me of the gift and when we were young.   They still sell Sensor two blade cartridges. The handle is hard to find though. Worth the effort. Cheaper and smaller. I like fewer blades and don’t shave enough to get into straight razors.

  I have on of those and it's just as old. However, I stopped using mine years ago and traded it for my late grandfather's Gillette safety razor. If anything, it's a cheaper endeavour

  I've still got my Gillette handle which is about the same age, they're definitely well made. I've not used it for over a decade though, I'll echo everyone else and say give a safety razor a try. Far cheaper and once you've got the technique down (keeping the angle right) they give a better shave.

  This all day. I ditched the cartridge razor scam 20 years ago and never looked back. My go to is a Merkur Slant, smoothest shaves I’ve ever had. Once you purchase the razor and brush you are set. The blades cost next to nothing. I’ve got a Gillette Fatboy from the 60’s, a couple of Tech’s and a few other vintage Gillettes but I keep going back to the Merkur Slant.

  Any recommendations for a pubic area trimmer?

   If you're on a budget or prefer something specifically designed for the pubic area, you can try Gillette Intimate Pubic hair trimmer. It has SkinFirst technology that helps prevent nicks and cuts, and it's waterproof too. However, it won't give you a completely smooth shave, so you might need to follow up with a razor if that's what you're after. Just one advice, I tried a ceramic blade trimmer once, and while it's safer, it just doesn't cut as well as stainless steel. If you're new to trimming, it might be okay, but for thicker hair, it's not ideal. Hope this helps, and happy trimming!

  I travel a lot too. After trying and failing to find an acceptable alternative for years, someone recommended the India-market [Gillette Guard razor](https://maggardrazors.com/products/gillette-guard-single-blade-cartridge-razor). It's not quite the same experience as my safety razor at home, but it's about as close as a TSA-allowable razor is going to get - being single blade and plenty sharp enough to cut my rather coarse facial hair. The fact that replacement cartridges are cheap is a bonus.

  Yes! I did a Gillette double edged king c safety and a box of a hundred blades. I spend like $5 a year on shaving, it’s more fun and technical, and the shave is waaaaay better. I cut the shit out of myself for a couple months learning the nuance though 😂
