  W. German leather is good enough for two lives

  For three reasons mostly: 1. The tanning process uses chemicals that could produce toxic and carcinogenic residue. 2. Ditto for the dying process. 3. The fatliquors previously used to condition the leather, like Sperm Whale oil, are not longer used. While it’s obviously good that these processes are no longer used, modern leathers—except at the very high end—are just not the same. I think we have a duty to save and rescue these great products from the trash heap, I mean they are really the equivalent of a modern product that easily costs over a thousand dollars.
