GR2 26L goes everywhere with me. It’s the single best backpack I’ve owned, and I use it daily for work items, travel with a bunch of smaller engineering kit on work trips, climb building rooftops and towers with it, and use it for personal travel. Well-designed layout, durable construction, lifetime warranty. Happened onto a sale a year or so ago, and I haven’t looked back. I came from an Eagle Industries three day pack that literally traveled the world with me, has soaked up jet fuel, hydraulic fluid, dust and god knows what else, briefly set on fire, shot at, thrown out of the back of a helicopter, and launched three Amazon warehouses. I still have it, but I’m sticking with the GR2. It’s that good. Goruck’s shoes are another great product. My feet are messed up from several of the above adventures, and the Mackalls are the only shoes that I seem to be able to wear without pain and fit my orthotics and toe box. I just sent one of my pairs to them to have a small tear from a bolt on the side of a cell tower repaired. No hassle. Decent turnaround. Now they have a scar. Still wear them as my rucking/workout shoes.

Goruck. I’ve owned a bunch of backpacks from Osprey to Maxpedition to Mystery Ranch, and the Goruck will outlast my great grandchildren. It’ll also have the best padding and structural support (outside of a metal frame backpack) for frequently carrying heavy things. You can also use it as a one piece gym if you add some weight plates.

It is definitely a pretty big investment, but Go Ruck have a legitimate lifetime warrenty and the packs are pretty much indestructible. I daily used mine for over 10 years, hiking/rucking, gym, office, motorcycle. The ribbon on the zipper did eventually tear (the zippers are one of the few parts they don't produce) and they sent me a new one for cost of shipping. Now I have 2 of them :) The straps will never detach

Help Me Find the Perfect Backpack (Laptop + Portable Monitor Setup, Lifetime Warranty Preferred)
I think overall I have a Goruck that's my favorite backpack. However that's a very different kind of backpack. I use this on business trips and family trips where I have to carry multiple devices. I will carry a 12.9" iPad, a 14" MBP and a personal machine for gaming that is 18.4". I have put a lot of weight and it has held up both on the back and on top of a carry on using the strap for that. I've had no issues and it has held up perfectly, it has a nice pocket layout and is well made.

Searching for Everyday backpack
I like it for lugging around my laptop and random stuff but I also ruck with a goruck gr1, I regularly throw 25kg in that and will walk for hours- it’s a more extreme build and the older 1000d cordura back panel models like mine will damage clothes due to being abrasive. If buying the journeyman clone, get the YKK zipper version.

Anyone keep a “BIFL Roster”?
Work jackets are tough since all clothes are a bit different and some fit better on different body types. I’ve loved my Filson jacket(s) for many years if you take care of it, it will take care of you. Bushcraft knife - Ive had and used my Dad’s Buck 192. Vanguard for at least 15 years. It’s a tank. However, I do have several winkler knives on my wish list. They’re still hand made, the quality is excellent, and the dude made all the weapons on the last of the Mohican movie. Pots and pans - can’t go wrong with All clad and Le creuset Kitchen knife’s are tough since they are a big “preference” item. But Wusthof makes excellent mass produced knives. If you’re looking for something more custom I’d research your local blacksmiths. One of my favorites is Henry Hyde. His site is Hyde handmade knives(all one word).com. His stuff is amazing and beautiful. Don’t have any griddle recs since I’ve never gotten into them. As for a bbq grill, I think the big green egg is the best you can buy with its lifetime warranty. But if it’s for the cabin and you don’t want to worry about someone making off with it. I’d say just a good old fashioned Webber kettle works just fine. Roller suitcases I don’t know: I’ve been using my goruck bag and a leather duffle from Pendleton. I love your list, my friend! Review: GoRuck GR1
I am the OP for this review and wanted to update in 2025 that the GR1 is still my edc bag. Everything is still in good shape, the only things that have “broken” are the shrink wrapping on two of the zipper pulls, though the original paracord is still in good condition. The black cordura fabric is kind of faded from lots of sun exposure, but that really about it. The front slash pocket has stretched a bit such that I can fit more things that are deeper in there now. The average weight of my daily carry hovers around 32lbs, since I’m using the bag as my camera bag. The straps are still going strong. Side note: I also still have and use my Filson tote bag that I originally mentioned in the post. I plan on getting some Rit synthetic dye and seeing if I can get the bag back to a deeper black. But it seems this bag is definitely a BIFL item for me.

Travel Bag that are common and are everywhere?
I use a GORUCK backpack for one bag traveling. Its pretty big but they allow it as carry on and I've never been forced to check the bag. Its definitely durable, holds a ton of volume, and has hip belts and straps to secure the contents. The downside is that its about $50 over your price range and might not be the style of bag a woman would want. But I've had mine since 2019 and its basically in the exact same condition still

Proper heritage style hiking backpack

Have several of these. Of the lot the one I’ve had the longest is my Goruck GR1 going on around 12 years now. Been through university, all over the world, plane cabins, short trips. Don’t see it giving up any ground any time soon. No signs of wear or distress for the most part.

I used to have an LTT backpack and the bottom wore out, they said it would have 2 layers but it didn’t. To their credit, they gave me a return after almost a year, so props to them. Now I have a GR1 from GoRuck. Their stuff is on another level for people who beat the absolute shit out of their stuff and it needs to last forever. Almost all 500D and YKK zippers.

What are your thoughts about Filson bags?
I LOVE Filson products, and have 4 pieces all USA made (I'm in the UK so have imported them) bought from Ebay at great discount :) That being said for travel they are pretty heavy/bulky and I don't find them hugely comfortable for longer carries. If I were going to get a rucksack I'd go for a GoRuck I think it's the GR3. I have a GR1 26l and I have to be honest it's the one I'd miss the most if I had to slim down.

1. Goruck GR1 - survived deployment and multiple field excursions. It’s been around the world and back with me and it looks like I got it out of the box yesterday. 2. Lodge cast iron and Dutch oven - never had a problem, period. 3. Tough to narrow down but probably my Moccamaster with a 1zpresso hand grinder. Great coffee every time. My only regret was a waxed canvas field jacket from Orvis but it’s no fault of the coat. It’s an awesome coat but I should’ve bought something warmer.

Backpacking with Back Pain
Two things. For back pain, especially you’re traveling and carrying load, you need to start strength training. Specifically working on core strength which when lacking is a leading cause of back pain. As far as a travel pack that will last forever- Goruck GR2 30L. Have had mine since 2012 - it’s been on many week long trips with no other bags and held everything I needed it to. Still looks new.

Check out GoRuck (lifetime warranty) . Pretty stripped down with regard to features, but super solid. I love them, but prefer Alpha One-Niner Evade series for features and comfort : deep water bottle pockets, huge amounts of organizational features. Have carried daily for several years and have no issues

Young professional purchases
I was looking at go-ruck the other night, seems like they make great durable products . On the pricey side a little? . I like the mission ones because they mix style durability and function. They are a little expensive too, but are all waxed, and look really unique.

Getting the right cases/bags is really important. I have a smaller Go-ruck as my daily backpack and love it, Ideally I want a duffle/backpack combo for weekend trips, briefcase and hard suitcase. Not too many uses for a briefcase yet.
