Can opener that lasts??

I think they still make these. I bought one around 2012 to mix protein shakes, and I bought a couple extra agitators and cups. Still working great and I just toss the agitator and cup in the dishwasher after using it. Much simpler to clean than most alternatives and minimal plastic going in the dishwasher (there's a small plastic circular bit on the end of the agitator).

What’s a small upgrade you made that ended up being way more impactful than expected?
A programmable coffee maker. Waking up to the house smelling like coffee and having it just be done without having to fumble around half asleep to measure coffee things is the best. We have a pretty simple Hamilton Beach one that has lasted years and works great.

Slow cooker suggestions?
You might want to check out /r/slowcooking/ as well. A few weeks ago I read reviews on slow cookers from everywhere I could find, and ultimately concluded that there were two models that seemed to get the best reviews (and were generally first or second on the list, in places that ranked them): 1. Hamilton Beach Temp Tracker 2. Hamilton Beach Set & Forget Both are available in 6qt. I would not recommend thrifting an old one, because older ones -- some models are worse than others -- do not heat up quickly enough. It's important that not only does the food reach its "safe temperature", but that it also spend as little time as possible in the "danger zone" when it's slowly warming up. More recent models are better than older models, in this regard. No slow cooker is necessarily BIFL given that they all have a heating element, but I think that all of them (including the ones with electronic displays/controls) should be considered roughly equivalent BIFL-wise.

I almost burned my place down five different times by forgetting kettles on the stove until all the water boiled away and they started burning. (ADHD) I cannot stand the scream of tea kettles, so I always disable the whistles. (Autism) Having an electric kettle has probably literally saved my life. I got a used Hamilton Beach stainless steel kettle from a neighbor on Buy Nothing, and it’s been going great, working about five times a day for the last five years. It’s probably ten years old.

Parents need all new kitchen appliances
Our whirlpool dishwasher quit heating after 17 years. Ge stove is 19, not sure how old our whirlpool fridge is (at least 15), microwave was just replaced last year (basic hamilton beach from walmart). Avoid samsung at all costs, not worth the headaches.

Toasters that can be disassembled?
I have a cheapo Hamilton Beach toaster and it has screws on the bottom that allow you to take it apart. Im at a loss here, isn't every appliance assembled in a factory, so shouldnt they all be able to be disassembled in reverse order? Are you saying all your toasters are press fit / permanently glued together?

To be fair, unless you treat it roughly, any slow cooker ought to be damned close to BIFL. They're dead-simple devices. Two, maybe 3, heat settings and that's it. No electronics, no fuzzy logic, no touchscreens. Just an internal thermostat and some heating coils. My Hamilton Beach slow cooker is 25 years old. Use slow cooker bags and cleanup easy and you probably won't have to worry about lead content in the glaze.

Is getting an ice maker on a fridge as risky as I've heard?
This is an older thread but I was surprised to hear how many people are afraid of refrigerator water lines. :-) I’ve owned several homes over the last 30 years, and several refrigerators, and have never had a water line break. Am I just lucky? I do agree that it’s probably best to go with braided stainless steel, as critters will chew through the plastic ones if given the chance. Anyways I actually came across this thread because I was shopping for a countertop ice maker and I’m looking for reviews. I found this [comparison sheet of ice maker models](https://www.reddit.com/user/PositivelyMoody89/comments/1lnvpuq/comparing_ice_maker_models/) that another Reddit user put together, and I think I’m now between a GE Opal and a Hamilton Beach. For anyone else looking to forgo their fridge with ice maker, this might be an option for you too. For me, I make smoothies every day so I just need a big ice supply.

Crock Pot, Instant Pot, Pressure cooker
Our Crock-Pot branded slow cooker's lid somehow warped. I replaced it with a Hamilton Beach Cook n Go and have liked it better; it also has a cook timer from 2-8 hours which is useful. We also have and use an Instant Pot and honestly we use that more often than anything. It can be a slow cooker but we like having two separate appliances if needed

What BIFL items would you add to your wedding registry?
All three are different brands but the same exact machine except for the glass knob pressed design and the length of the cord—ADG, Duracrest, and Hamilton Beach 35 cup chrome percolator coffee pots. If you go this route: make sure all the pieces are there, including the cord; make sure they’ve posted photos of the interior, since some can be rusted out; make sure the glass knob isn’t cracked (the coffee percolates up into it so that’s a point you really need to be whole). None of them had a functioning red button but all of them did work when received—we have one I named wheezy (the one designated for tea now) that takes about 15 mins longer than the other two to heat up, but they’re truly excellent for parties. I set them on IKEA variera powder coated shelves so that I don’t have to pull the urns close to the edge of the table (they do get quite hot to touch when working). I let them dry for two days after cleaning before putting them back in the cabinet to make sure nothing will rust. I paid $75-105 for each for reference! Last note, for tea that won’t go bitter with long, hot steeping you want Persian loose leaf black tea. People can dilute it to their preferred strength with hot water. For a Persian-style tea bar you can get tea roses from middle eastern stores, saffron rock sugar, cinnamon sticks, lemons/limes, nice honey, and orange blossoms for mix-ins—that’s what we did for our wedding along with coffee and homemade syrups and it was a huge hit! Local artisan custom crocheted beverage sleeves in our wedding colors were our wedding favors, they let people mark their cups (each had unique antique/vintage buttons sewn on) and were enthusiastically taken home by every guest! We have great photos of guests choosing their sleeves and showing them off for the rest of the night!

Ugh. Please recommend me an iron that (a) lasts, and (b) doesn’t spit water all over whatever I’m ironing. So sick of my last two irons. But yes, I’d prefer a steam iron if possible, because I’m lazy, I guess. Thanks.
Couple of things that might help imo: – Go for anti drip models for no annoying water splashes. – ceramic or stainless steel soleplate- they glide better and last longer. – A self cleaning function really helps if you’ve got hard water, keeps buildup away. – Auto shut off is underrated but nice – fast steam output ofc if you want wrinkles gone fast. Considering these factors, I’d say go for the pursteam steam iron if you want something more powerful(big tank, heats up fast, smooth ceramic soleplate). Or just for essentials, hamilton beach has got really good reviews. I would recc hamilton more tho since it doesn't complicate stuff much but that's just my preference, professionals like pursteam sm better. It's getting harder, mostly word of mouth and a lot of researching. My buy for life items are Ariens Snowblower. 1st 38 years, 2nd now past 15) San Antonio Shoe Company. (1st pair now past 13 years, just resoled). Salad Master Cookware (now past 38 years) Speed Queen Washer & Dryer ( now past 12 years) Hamilton Beach toaster (estate sale $8, made in 1970).

Top BIFL Household Items for Starting Over
We drink tons of coffee and tea, so the last thing I pack and the first thing out of the box in a new place every time we move is the electric kettle. I have a Hamilton Beach stainless steel model that I've had for over a decade, and it gets used multiple times a day every day. It's a beast. The second and third things out of the boxes are my ancient glass French press and my OXO tea infuser. We've replaced multiple Mr. Coffee and Hamilton Beach drip coffee makers, as well as a Keurig that finally died after 7 years, but my kettle/French press/tea infuser combo is a lifesaver. Also in the kitchen, a crockpot. Go thrifting and look at second hand stores for the old glassware/cookware/baking sheets/etc, but see if you can also find a crockpot. The last thing you want to worry about some days when starting over is cooking, so being able to throw something together and let it cook while you deal with life is always a good thing. I'd also add a small rice cooker, but I'm not sure that's for everyone. I love my $15 one from Aldi, but it's only a few months old so not sure of the longevity of the cheaper versions. Kitchen knives are a personal choice. I'd suggest buying a few good knives over a big set until you know what brand you like. Personally, I'm a savage that uses a paring knife for 75% of the time in the kitchen. Do I have a full set and know there are "better" knives? Yes. Do I care? No. My paring knife is my primary knife because I feel most comfortable with a smaller wicked sharp blade. I could get away with only also needing a chef's knife and a bread knife to be totally comfortable, but Husband uses them all. After getting caffeine and something to cook with, I'd find good pillows and a mattress. My opinion only, but I'd rather buy cheaper sheets and have a good mattress with a waterproof/allergy proof type mattress bag, and good pillows with the same waterproof/allergy proof covers. I'm a restless sleeper and rotate how I sleep, so my favorite pillow is a cooling pillow from Sleepy. It is soft, so I can mush it to whatever shape I need for my sleep position as I change during the night. Absolutely balked at the $100+ price tag initially, but the store had a 30 day return policy if I didn't like it. For the rest of the house, a good toilet plunger before you need it is a must. I'm also a fan of having a sink plunger, but we had a learning curve of a house with a sink disposal. They are two different types of plungers, in case you didn't know. As others have said, a good vacuum is a must, but it's less useful if you don't have a lot of carpeting/rugs to clean or pets to have hair drift in corners.

BIFL (but not cost a fortune) food processor?
I had a Cuisinart break on me, and I replaced it with the Hamilton Beach food processor that comes with a bowl scraper attachment. We're frequent users, and it's still working good as new 5 years later. Once you get used to having the side scraper you can't go back to before.

Miniature Plastic Free Electric Kettle?
My Hamilton Beach 1 liter kettle is all stainless steel except the viewport and handle, which are plastic. I've had it just under 10 years - bought it at Walmart, and they still sell the same 1.2 liter model, around $20. My best friend swears by her Chefman electric kettle, which is glass, looks very nice, but she thinks it takes a bit longer to boil water than my Hamilton Beach does. Immersion water heaters are another option, especially if you only want to boil a cup or so at a time. You place the heating coil inside your cup and clip it on the side. Boils water very fast. I have a Norpro immersion heater that's at least 20 years old, but I only use it a few times a month since I find my kettle much more convenient.

What's the current best toaster oven BIFL favorite?
People who bought a brevilla 5 or more years ago are seriously lucky! Those things were legit BIFL. Recently though breville has just lost that reliability… so make sure to get reviews from someone who bought it RECENTLY. I’m a big fan of the Hamilton Beach toaster ovens - but they are basic toaster ovens. If you’re looking for an airfryer cum toaster im pretty sure Cosori is going to be your best bet. I wouldnt recommend Ninja for longevity - ive heard cases of them breaking down after a bit. Whatever you buy, should be popular enough that replacement parts are available if you ever need them. Hamilton Beach Flexbrew
The first one lasted quite a while and I can't quite remember what happened -- I think it started leaking around the single brew side? Like water would go from the carafe side to the single side but all the hoses were intact so idk. The 2nd one just quit suctioning water at all -- again hoses intact & cleaned so it wasn't hard water build-up. The 2nd one was the newer model that everyone hated, apparently, so HB went back to the original model, I think.

Nice. We're on our third (flexbrew) in 7 years 🤦 Whenever it breaks down we haul out the 50 year-old black & decker that's never let us down. But the basket sits on top of the pot & isn't programmable so... we keep buying the damn flexbrews

Coffee machine for life? (or at least a few years)
I used to go through a coffee maker a year but I've had a Hamilton Beach Flexbrew for several years now and I bought it used to begin with. Any coffee maker gets clogged but it's built in a way that makes it easy to unclog. I also have a Cafe Gaggia espresso machine but it's a lot more work to take apart. Really a traditional Moka Pot makes an excellent cup of coffee and is so simple that it will last forever too but the Hamilton Beach is the one I recommend to normal people who just want to be able to simply and reliably make coffee in the mornings.

What home coffee essentials have held up and lasted you over time?
Bodum French press: broke one years ago, re-bought and it’s too simple to fail. Technivorm Moccamaster: workhorse for daily coffee and I expect it to work with regular cleaning and descaling for years to come (my previous Bonavita coffee maker also held up for years). Breville smart grinder: holding up well now for years, I’m concerned the grinder teeth are starting to wear, but still works well every day. Trying out a secondhand Flair espresso maker but seems to be sturdy. Hamilton beach kettle: bought for $20 and I’ve wanted a fancier gooseneck one but this one won’t die and works perfectly.

Hario v60, aeropress, black and decker drip coffee maker and hamilton beach kettle.. For espresso, others will have better suggestions

Hamilton Beach is a total junk company
I have a Hamilton beach rice cooker that I bought in 2020 for like $20 usd ...it still works perfectly after daily use. Also got an electric kettle for $30 ish and it's great as well
