My coffee maker needs replacement - but is Moccamaster more hype than BIFL?
I have a 20 year old Cuisinart that the past 5 years was only used for when I had guests. I've mostly been doing pourover on a ceramic Hario or Kalita. I recently splurged on the MM KBGV (got one for $240 on Black Friday week Amazon-returned it because I got a lighting deal on one for $179). I did a head to head comparison of taste between my MM and the Cuisinart. The MM tasted notably better taking the same amount of water, same amount of coffee and brewing in both machines. That said it's not going to match my pourovers but for drip coffee, it's about the best drip I've tasted in over 50 years of drinking and making coffee.

Number one premise for good tasting coffee ist freshly ground coffee. A 20 dollar filter machine will do fine, if you grind your beans just before making the coffee. As to the kinds of setups. The world of coffee is very big and there are many ways of brewing. If you want to spend around 200 bucks for a set and forget machine, the Moccamaster is the absolute winner. You put freshly ground coffee in, flip the switch and wait a few minutes- done. But again- the quality of each cup is dependant on a lot of things with good coffee beeing the number one factor. If you only need small amounts of coffee and you are willing to put some time into making it, then go for a handfilter setup. Look at Hario for example. It's like a filter machine without the machine. You have to put hot water into the filter yourself. But in exchange it's super cheap, gives you a lot of freedom and will probably never break- it's just a piece of plastic. If you were to go this route, I'd suggest to read up on grinders and water filters. You could get a handfilter + quality grinder + a water filter (filtered water is important for coffee but you can definitely start without) and some high quality coffee beans for less than 200 bucks.

Looking for wedding registry ideas.
Go for quality pieces over sets for sure. No knife set, no cookware set. Here’s my recommendations so far. - Duralex Picardie glasses (timeless, still in production, super durable. - Corelle plates and bowls (they make strange designs, but they also have simple white rounded and squarish plates) Le Cruset maybe if you prefer the style. My grandma handed some down, so they last. -Oneida flatware if there’s a style you like from them. I think they have a lifetime warranty and my parents’ has still lasted my whole life, although I have had a couple table knives rust from the dishwasher. (Haven’t tested their warranty) - All Clad stainless 12in skillet D3 (I got the D5 because of a sale and I liked the brush metal). - All clad or Demeyere 3qt-3.5 range saucepan…something with a lip for easy pouring - Demeyere 10in saucier? (I got this massively on sale and it’s super heavy, but it kinda bridges the gap if I need a smaller skillet like surface, or a larger saucepan surface. The rounded edges make it perfect for, well…sauces lol. - Le Cruset Dutch oven (although, the saucier has a lid and can go in the oven…even fits a sourdough loaf!) - Asahi professional line cutting board. Natural color is cheaper than black. Maybe not quite for life, but it’s the closest thing besides an end grain cutting board which is much more maintenance. They’re beefy. They’re rubber with some wood in it, so avoiding the microplastics and the bacteria growth of other boards. You can fairly easily sand off a micro coating of it and haha a completely new surface as needed. - Get a quality chef knife (or Santoku or something if you prefer), paring knife, and serrated knife, and learn how to sharpen the former 2. (I’m currently learning on the Sharpal double sided sharpener…maybe practice on a cheap knife before your nice BIFL ones though lol.) - Nordicware sheet pans, bread pans, cake pans if you’re into baking. - Pyrex 3 piece measuring cup set (sorry I broke my rule about sets lol) - Kitchenaid stand mixer (if you’re into baking) - Hario V60 Pour Over Coffee Starter Set (the one with the plastic pour over piece) if you’re into coffee Might have other recommendations for rice cooker, coffee stuff, and cooking utensils, but it’s probably not as BIFL. Hope this helps! I know people love cast iron and carbon steel. Go for it if you like, but I really do prefer a stainless steel pan myself.

The very simple pour overs (hario, malita, etc etc) are all things that would last until you broke them. I have had two hario v60s over the past 16 years. One’s handle broke because I dropped it in the sink but after sanding the sharp edge (after cutting myself on it) it still *works*, just annoying. The thing I got recently that I love is a small scale meant for small measurements. Overloads at 500g. Great for getting quick, accurate measurements of tiny things. I have a BIFL bigger scale I use when I need like, 800g of flour, but for everything else I just use the little guy. And of course shout out to the aeropress. I could see maybe eventually needing to replace the plunger part? Maybe? I feel like the coffee world is (thankfully) chock full of durable, very-long-lasting, quality stuff and it isn’t always even expensive.

To be clear for others, this means the Hario Switch. It's an immersion brewer, which means you pour the water over grounds in the cup, where they stay for ~3mins, then you push a release lever and the coffee drains into your cup. Super easy and a consistently good cup.

I had a Chemex that swore by, left it behind in a move and never gave it a second thought. Save your money. I used cheap French presses for years because I didn’t want to spend money on filters but recently I got a Hario V60 (on special offer for around £10) and it’s fine. The filters are cheap, the coffee is tasty, and it’s easy to clean up and better for my drains. But I don’t think it’s any better than the £5 pour over I borrowed from a friend on holiday. They’re all fine, and they’ll last as long as you don’t do something dumb.

If you're looking for a manual pour over, then just get a plastic V60. They are durable, easy to heat up, easy to clean and simple (they do have a learning curve). If you want to go more durable, you can look for a stainless steel V60. If you have more money then I would get the Hario Switch, which uses both percolation and immersion and gets you a better cup. If you want BIFL+Zero waste, get a metal mesh filter for the V60 like an Able Kone.

Late to the party but I was given an Hario v60 coffee drip filter (the plastic one that looks like a cup) about 8 years ago from someone who was given it and didn't even drink coffee. I've made thousands upon thousands of cups of coffee with this and taken it on holiday and camping multiple times and it's shown no signs of wear. Some coffee stains, yeah, but that's it. It's one of the best (Didn't) Buy It For Life items I've come across

Yup, totally agree with that answer. Grinder first (for consistency of particles size). One important thing about grinders: there is only few options that allow to grind for both pour-over/drip AND espresso. Baratza ESP encore is one of them. And I think the Niche Zero is another. Moccamaster is great, and seems build to last (I have mine since a few years, I descale it any time I open a new box of filters, and it makes the same coffee as day 1). V60 is a great and affordable option if you want to get into manual pour over. All products from Hario are fine. A kettle is necessary. A gooseneck temperature controlled kettle is a nice to have upgrade. Consider buying an accurate scale (regular kitchen scales are not so accurate, and on 15gr of beans, one gram more or less goes a long way, taste wise). Hario VST-2000 is a good option. If you want to go portable at some point (which is probably going to be, since falling into coffee is a never ending pit of compulsive buys), You can look into the regular Aeropress, and a proper handgrinder. r/Coffee is a great place to get feedback on what you intend to buy before you push the cart button. True BIFL coffee makers. Plastic / electric automatic makers will breakdown and add microplastics to your body and environment on a daily basis, lesser quality flavor as well.
Pretty much any pour over should last forever as long as you don’t drop it, though I’ve dropped a chemex from about 4 feet up and onto hardwood floors and it didn’t break. I’d be wary of an imitation being made of borosilicate glass, I’d consider that essential considering you’re pouring nearly boiling water in it. If you’re brewing for one the Hario v60 is generally considered a superior brewer, though it’s not as pretty. I have both and regularly brew for two, I find there’s no recognizable quality difference between the two.

Okay, how many cups do you want to make? 1 cup- Aeropress, but it is plastic and will eventually wear out or hario pourover. If you need to make 2-3 cups there are plenty of great siphons brewers like hario, it will last as long as glass lasts. If you need more than 3 cups Moccamaster or bunn for home depending on your budget. Hario also makes an amazing coldbrew maker, I can't explain why its better than no name brand ones but it just is.

I've had the Technivorm for about 15 years I think and you can't beat the customer service and warranty service long after purchase. That said, made with some pretty crappy plastic parts except for the carafe and it makes good coffee but we've taken to using Hario V60 for pour over instead. The coffee is just as good if not better because we stir the slurry this way. I guess it depends on whether your priority is making a pot of coffee or a cup of coffee one at a time. The new glass line thermal carafe is a real upgrade one of several they did for free in addition to paid service for repair.

I like the Creano XXL but I also removed the plastic basket arm and lid from the carafe. It works with the same in place but it’s tight. There are many threads on this. If you want to keep the basket arm in place the Kalita wave, Kalita 102, Hario V60, or Cilio, or Orea all work. I tried the 3 hole Kalitas with the arm and found placement too finicky. I prefer to use #4 filters so went with the big one.

OP I would think about how much time you wanna spend making coffee. If you are trying to break the habit of drive thru, and do it at home quick and easy, you gotta think in terms of what ritual you wanna follow so that you stick to it long term. Drip is super easy, turn it on and walk away to get ready for the day. The other options in here have varying times to brew and some require a kettle and you manually doing things. I use a hario v60 or a chemex depending on how many cups, and it's about 15 min all-in depending on how much water I'm boiling.

Good suggestion. I prefer similar, but more circular shaped pourover brewer, such as the [Hario V60](https://a.co/d/cq3xrWF) because you can easily fold the cheap basket style paper filters into a cone shape and avoid buying expensive ones. It comes in plastic or ceramic - plastic works just fine.

Stove top kettle, ceramic pour over + metal filter, a manual grinder from Hario. Takes some time to get the process dialed in but I won't ever go back and these items will last.

Pour over coffee (Hairo, Yeti, Ikea, OXO) with a gooseneck tea kettle French Press depending on the make (Frieling is very BIFL- made for cafe use) Moka Pot is very BIFL as well. Lots of options out there that are not a percolator. If you want a more traditional coffee maker there is Moccamaster.

For me (a filter coffee/french press drinker): *Ceramic Hario V60 dripper with Hario paper filters (thrifted) * A digital scale that measures in 0.10 g increments * Baratza Encore grinder (if I were an espresso drinker, would go for a Baratza Esp) * Bodum french press (though in my case I wouldn’t call the glass ones BIFL because… glass and ADHD don’t mix well) For those times when I fancy something more akin to an espresso, I’ve got a Vev Viganò moka pot, stainless steel (18/10), made in Italy, that I bought 10 years ago. Also have a larger Vev Viganò (if I have guests) that I found at a thrift store about 15 years ago. Have only needed to change tge rubber gasket. All this said and done, good quality whole beans and soft, tasty, clean water is where to start. Before getting the Baratza I used a Mr Coffee burr grinder and only had the French Press. 1000% difference already from in-store ground beans Also, highly recommend checking out James Hoffmann’s YT channel for how-tos and product recommendations in a variety of price ranges!

CleverDripper (or Hario Switch) is my go to. Dead simple. Less pressure. Gasket lasts forever. Cheap. Easy cleanup. It’s like a French press mixed with a pour over. Highly recommend it!
