  Replacing my safety razor

  I've been using the Henson razor for about two years now. It's fine, doesn't always get as close as a shave as I want. In terms of build though, it seems very solid. Two piece head, one piece handle, very standard refillable blade, I can see mine lasting an extremely long time.

  Electric Razor with no Stubble? (OneBlade or epilier?)

  My understanding is that electric razors simply can't shave as close as a safety razor or similar. Safety razors are more fuss, but they can just get smoother than electric ones. That's certainly been my experience anyways - I've used both a Henson safety razor and a Phillips OneBlade and I use the Phillips more often for convenience's sake (and less irritation for me personally) but I definitely can't shave as close and the hair does grow back faster for me. I'm transmasc nonbinary from a family with shitty facial hair genes so "faster" is still not that fast for me and there's not a ton of it to get through, but I usually would touch up every other day with the OneBlade instead of only maybe twice a week with a safety razor. I would say if your hair is so thick that it's clogging up a safety razor that fast, a OneBlade probably ain't gonna do what you need. There may not be one solution that's perfect for every part of your body here. There may also be some trade-offs depending on your goals. For example, waxing, sugaring, or use of an epilator could work really well for you in some areas, but if you're getting electrolysis or laser, or doing home IPL, you actually need that little bit of hair under the skin and would have to stick to shaving/potentially put up with a little more fuss shorter-term for the longer-term more permanent results. If those are all way out of your budget right now, an epilator (or sugaring/waxing) might be better for your body hair in terms of smoother results, slower regrowth, etc, but my understanding is that epilators, waxing, anything that really rips the hair out at the root is not suitable for full-on beard hair because they're so thick and the roots are so deep it can cause a lot of skin trauma and risk infection and other complications. I have a few thoughts on how you might want to go here: 1) You could stick to a safety razor just for your face and use an epilator on the body (caveat being that I don't know if they're safe/viable for intimate areas but it would at least minimize the areas needing shaving) 2) You could stick to a safety razor for the face and do waxing or sugaring for the body, either yourself or having a professional do it; upside - lasts longer than shaving and should make hair grow in thinner/slower over time, downside - more painful than shaving, expensive over time especially if you have to pay a pro to get good results, and the hair does have to grow out a fair bit between sessions so the wax can grab onto it (I assume it's similar with sugaring but am less familiar with that one myself) 3) You could keep using the safety razor everywhere (although personally I wouldn't use the same one for my face & pits/intimate areas at least not without aggressive sanitation and a fresh blade in between), and (assuming your skin and hair tones are suitable; optimal candidates have light skin and dark hair) invest in a good home IPL device to help thin/slow/stop the body hair over time - it's not as powerful and needs more maintenance treatment than laser, but many people still get very good results. Expect to pay quite a bit up-front, but potentially save money long-term vs. getting pro laser on your whole body. Caveat: the IPL would mainly control the body hair. These devices are generally not advised for facial hair on AMAB folks, partially for safety reasons and partially because they're just not strong enough. The face would likely still need electrolysis or professional laser down the line and shaving in the interim, but you could save a lot of hassle on the body hair with a good IPL device over time. 4) You could go with #1 or #2 and prioritize saving towards electrolysis on the facial hair first to have it permanently gone ASAP, since that's going to be some of the hardest hair to deal with and most visible day to day. r/HairRemoval is probably a more helpful sub for you - you may need a "mixed methods" approach for different parts and may need to consider what kind of trade-offs you can deal with where, especially when thinking about shorter-term annoyances for longer-term more permanent gains with certain options.

  Is this worth the pick up?

  I bought a Hensen DE razor and I am pretty happy with it. It will probably last my lifetime and the blades are not only much cheaper than these, but also guaranteed to still be produced in 50 years.

  Hi, I need help deciding what should i buy.

  This isn’t exactly what you’re looking for, but as someone who uses electric grooming tools, I also needed an actual manual razor for detail work, my neck, etc. I highly recommend Henson razors. I have used multiple safety razors and this is by far the best. It holds the razor in such a way that nicks are impossible and there’s much less margin between the blade and the blade holder. I really love mine. It feels like a true BIFL purchase.

  Leaf razor lifetime warranty

  The Henson razor has been the the best DE razor for me. It’s my daily driver. I keep a Gillette Fusion 5 on deck for when I’m travelling, or need to shave incredibly fast.

  Merkur (OG, current safety razor) or Hanson (haven't tried this, Canadian brand, seems like an interesting improvement). Astral Platinum blades but get a sample pack from Amazon or somewhere to find what's best for your hair.

  10/10 agree with the Henson recommendations. Had a merkur first ended up giving it to my brother in law after trying a Henson. Now both my wife and I have our own Hensons. She's much happier using a safety on her legs rather than throwing away all those lady razors too.

  Henson. Best shave I've had and the razor is absurdly well made. Each blade lasts me a week or more when shaving every day, so I still haven't used up my free 100 pack of blades after 2 years. The cost at purchase feels like a bit much but it does save you money in the long run. I've also dropped the razor a bunch of times and there's been no damage to it. If you get one, definitely look for coupon codes on youtube for the free blades. Answers with Joe pushes them, so maybe he'll have one.

  Very true! Although, the big selling point of the Henson is that the blades sit with an extremely tight tolerance, so sharpening the blade by hand could lead to a less smooth shave Those blades have been around since my parents were kids & are dirt cheap, so I personally think it's better to call off the frugality for the sake of a nice shave here :)

  Safety razor for life?

  I love my Henson, but I know people don't recommend it as "the best" due to the price. I tried a lot of stuff that struggled with my coarse hair, but the Henson seems to do just fine with it. Take my opinion with a grain of salt, as I haven't tried many other safety razors in particular!

  I upgraded my BIFL razor to make it portable!

  I have a Henson razor and it sandwiches the blade between the top dome and bottom plate by screwing in the handle. I just flip the bottom plate upside down and screw in the handle. The set up sort of protects the blade edge when I toss it in my kit to travel.

  What are your “keep it for life” hacks?

  Henson makes the best safety razors from aluminum and titanium. Either will last a lifetime. I only buy stainless steel blades and rust is never a problem.

  Get a Henson razor and use it for the rest of your life. Blades are much cheaper than cartridges and you will be less likely to get razor burn and ingrown hairs. I’m still using the bulk blades that I bought years ago. I typically get 100-200 at a time. Each blade lasts about a week. Could easily go longer but it’s just easier to stay on a weekly schedule.

  I've had 2 razors before the Henson, a cheapo no name safety razor & an old Gillette slim adjustable. With both of those I would Nick myself probably once a week or over a few years. Now with my Henson I can go a lot faster and no nicks still running the same feather blades this whole time. Once you look at their website you'll start seeing their ads on every website for the next few months tho.

  I moved from Murker to Henson. Figured it wouldn't be a big difference but I enjoy the Henson much more. I don't know enough about safety razors to say what makes it feel better but I enjoy shaving more with the Henson.

They use standard razor blades, easy to clean, stainless steel from the airplanes the company usually makes, engineered to perfection by those same airplane engineers. I got recommended it from this sub, and it is still to this day the best purchase I’ve made from here. I have not had a better shave from anything else I’ve tried. Not only will the handle last a lifetime, but the blades are so cheap and last 2-3 clean shaves (can be stretched out, but honestly it’s so cheap you’re saving maybe pennies), with your current shaving needs you probably would only spend <$5 on blades per year. It’s $10 for 100 on their website, but they work with any standard double edge razor blade. I’m still on my first 100 blade pack and I bought it 3ish years ago.

  What are your favorite niche BIFL items that are currently available?

  Yeah. Even the "cheap" ones will typically last a lifetime, as long as you are in the de89 zamak clone range. I've used some vintage US stuff that felt really cheap and crappy, but it still shaved. I love shaving thanks to wet shaving. My son has a Hanson, and I've got lots, including high end stuff like Wolfman, Timeless, Blackland, RG, ATT, probably more. Yes, there are definitely levels of quality, but it's all fine. I like Hanson as an entry point, particularly if you only need mild aggression - that's why I got one for my son. But, nearly any DE would fit the bill.

  Merkur and Feather are quality products. Not sure if BIFL but Henson has a safety razor that takes some of the pressure of the razor off your skin if prone to nicking yourself.

  I got a Henson razor since I have never used one before and it's great. Super easy to use, very difficult to cut yourself with. It's not the closest shave I've ever had but it improved as I learned to use it. I had really bad tugging, got it for Christmas and it's been life changing tbh lol.

  Just those brands! They make solid electronics. Sharp too, but they’ve been focusing on certain products as of late.   What’s one item you bought that has lasted for YEARS and was worth every penny?

  I got a Henson razor like a year ago to upgrade from my no-name Amazon purchase and it was night and day better. It came with 100 blades, but I’m still finishing off the 100 blade pack I bought years ago… I probably wont have to buy a razor blade for 5 years or more at this rate! Just shave soap, and a bar of that lasts me over a year
