I’ve always been a Makita guy without knowing anything about the corporate side. My tools always just felt more solid and durable than coworkers’ Dewalt or Milwaukee. Then I saw this in r/construction.
Yeah, the Hercules is good too. I had started with Bauer a long while ago, so with the batteries already bought, i stuck with it! I use Milwaukee for job tools which dont come home, so for around the house it's hobo freight all day. Just bought the bauer pole saw last week and it's cut about 50 too high to reach branches already!

Also Hercules! Some of that stuff is pretty darn good, for a homeowner. I only discovered Harbor Freight a few years ago, but I’m glad I did. I’m pretty strict about my spending, but also have done/currently do a LOT of different things for my home and yard, and I’d never have been able to pick up all the same tools I’ve acquired if I’d bought them all from Lowe’s or Home Depot. Sometimes being able to get more tools into your life, is “buying it, for (your) life,” where the alternative is “can’t afford the tools, can’t buy it for (your) life.”

I wanted Milwaukee tools for work. Found out they were sold and now are Chinese owned and made? Went with Hercules from Harbor Freight. I was told they are American owned and Chinese made. Whatever, they are half the price of Milwaukee and if i break one I walk into Harbor Freight and they are change for a new one right away. So far all the tool hold up in a very hostile environment and have outperformed my Milwaukee stuff.

Which tool brand ecosystem would you invest in for 2025 and why for the occasionally frugal DIYer?
In my limited experience I would go either Ryobi or Hercules. I have been VERY impressed on the price to performance of the Hercules tools I have gotten recently but haven't had them for long enough to talk about durability. Have also had a bunch of Ryobi tools that I have absolutely beat the shit out of over the past 5 or 6 years that just keep kicking. I've left them sitting out in the rain, beating around in the bed of my truck, pushed them way past what they were made to be used for and they just keep on kicking. Tools have outlasted the batteries by a long shot though. One thing I will say is be wary of cheap knock off batteries on Amazon, I have had very poor luck with them

I'm a new construction plumber running Milwaukee professionally. That being said, ryobi and Hercules have both been looking pretty good lately. I have a few coworkers that are running both platforms and if I could go back before I invested so deeply I would probably look at Hercules, harbor freight has a great return policy as well

picked up hercules after good research on this topic and i would stand by my decision on hercules. you’ll find basic power tools which are of great quality for a fraction of the price compared to dewalt or milwaukee. sure in the comparison videos dewalt or milwaukee may win, but not by a good margin. hercules comes with a no-nonsense 5 year warranty for their brushless tools which made it a no-brainer for me. sure they don’t have specialty tools, but i wouldn’t mind having a different battery system (say ryobi) if there are tools that i eventually want to own.

I personally have Milwaukee stuff bc I use them at work too. But to keep a small toolset in my gfs car/apartment I’ve been buying the Hercules system from harbor freight. I’m pretty impressed by the quality so far.

If you're starting out, I'd recommend Hercules from Harbor Freight. Else, DeWalt, but make sure you buy the professional tools, not the frequently discounted. DeWalt has a bunch of different model numbers that look the same but are offering qualities.

agreed. either pony up for milwaukee if you're a pro and need the performance or stick with ryobi imo. rigid is cool if you really like air tools OR if you really like their warranty. if i was to use rigid i would use air simply because air can't die from being in storage and having a compressor is surprisingly useful. hercules is also worth considering if you're a fan of harbor freight and really value their easy to use warranty. i am flipping an entire house right now using nothing but ryobi. i bought all of it used off marketplace and none of it has let me down.
