Good list. I agree with a lot here. I’ll note that the new Levi’s always wear in the crotch for me. I’ve since switched to Patagonia pants. I’ve heard the USA Levi’s and vintage ones still hold up great though but their elastic or blend jeans aren’t as durable. Patagonia is great. Sent in my down puffer to fix a hole in it. They patched it up and refilled the down. Only downside was the wait, but I did it in the summer after the cold. Patagonia worn wear is great as well. Can get some good deals and the condition is always accurate/great. Boot-wise red wings heritage is awesome. Grant stone is also another company I greatly enjoy their boot quality. Le creuset Dutch ovens are absolute work horses. After getting one, it is my most used pot. Incredibly versatile. Also shoutout to the book all about braising by Molly Stevens. Made me a much better cook. All clad pans as well are tanks. Zojirushi rice cooker if you eat a lot of rice multiple times a week. For an office chair, Herman Miller. I found one on Facebook marketplace for cheap after Covid and it saved my back. I’ve had darn tough socks for almost eight years and I’m finally noticing wear/a hole forming on my oldest pair. So once those wear through I’ll finally use their warranty. Incredible value. Artisan cooking/chefs knives. I got a set from a smith and they hold up so well and look beautiful. Hold their edge much longer too. Only had them a few years but I cook quite a bit and I’m genuinely impressed by their build.

It might be worth asking if you can pay someone to deliver a chair if you find a good one on FB Marketplace. I bought two Herman Millers for my hubby and I at $170 each (they were 10 years old, however, but in great shape). We picked up but never hurts to ask if you find a gem!!

Herman Miller Aeron Fakes?
I bought a 12 yea old one for $350, used it a year sold it for $250 and bought myself a brand new slightly larger one. Lots of used out there as they last a long time and when businesses get rid of them they have to go somewhere. The person I sold that old used one to is still using it today that chair is over 20 years old at this point and going strong.

I ended up buying my Herman Miller from someone on facebook marketplace. He had a business selling used office chairs. I was able to actually go sit in the different chair options to see what was the best fit for me. I paid $450 and it’s in great condition.

Got a Mirra used from a warehouse space in Denver where they absolutely could have murdered me and no one would have known. A deal is a deal though and thankfully they did not murder me. Replaced the cylinder and armrests a year or two ago but it has otherwise gone strong for the better part of a decade now and I don’t foresee needing to replace it any time soon.

Both my aeron chairs were used, in the $300 range. Once on eBay, once on Craigslist. Any grubby or worn parts can be easily and cheaply replaced. One is 22 years old. Bombproof.

I got my girlfriend a Mirra 2 on FB marketplace for $250, confirmed it’s legit.. Looked brand new, the guy got it from his job and had a different model HM he preferred. Keep an eye out for deals and you can find one. I have an Embody (purchased new 4 years ago) that I love every damn day, used 6-10 hours per day.

Honestly a used herman miller is your best bet. For back pain the embody chair is the best on the market, but if you can’t find one used there are a lot of mirra and aeron.

Echoing others thoughts about FB Marketplace for refurbs. In 2014 I was shopping for one, but had a $400 budget. I found this guy on Craigslists who must have been on some meds, or off them, he was super hyper. Anyway in his scatterbrained way scheduled me to come to his house to pick up the chair. I show up and his entire suburban property was dedicated to Herman Miller. Back porch had 5'x5'x5' plastic bins full of just arm rests, another area with seat backs, and lift pistons, and casters. We picked a good base, swapped a few parts, he even used this special spraypaint he tracked down that exactly matches the finish on the metal pieces. Walked away with an Aeron for $360. In 2022 I had more money so I bought a brand new Aeron (new model) and sold the old one on Facebook Marketplace for $400.

A $300 used Herman Miller? Aerons are widely available used, on CL, FB Marketplace and then from local furniture liquidators as they're one of the most popular office chairs of all time so there's always a second hand supply. They're built like tanks, have a 12 year warranty and service parts are widely available, they're very serviceable chairs although the most likely repair will be the gas cylinder for the height adjustment which eventually wear out and is an easy swap and tons of kits are available on the Internet. If you are really lucky you can find one with a worn out cylinder for cheap and replace it. I've seen them as low as $250 depending on specs, but you should be able to find plenty in the $250-450 range, I'd recommend adding the PostureFit kit for better lumbar if you get one with the classic basic lumbar pad which really sucks. If you can find a local liquidator they'd probably deliver.

On FB marketplace, this seller is selling a chair they're claiming is a new Herman Miller for $650. I'm assuming it's a copycat Herman miller or a scam?
I did end up going for another seller on fb marketplace but it was very similar in price. Got it for $600 and was legit. Dude had a whole storage unit for chairs he gets for cheap from offices. Mine was actually basically brand new even. Idk about $250 though, I'd ask for more pictures or even just go to see it in person first. If it's used and older then the price may make sense.

And seriously, stand up and walk around periodically - no chair is gonna save you if you're sitting for 8 hours without moving. Hope you find smth that helps

I know a lot of people are mentioning a used Aeron or Gesture but if you want something new, the Desky Pinnacle is $500. Has all of the features youd want for a mid range ergo chair. theres lumbar support, mesh etc. The Steelcase Gesture kept coming up for a reason. I heard it's great if you sit cross legged during games. For the Herman Miller Aeron, it's great but the hard plastic edges around the seat make it uncomfortable if you change positions much. If you like getting cozy or changing how you sit, that's something to keep in mind. Try to test in person if you can, or make sure there's a good return policy. Chairs are super personal.

Are RH (formerly Restoration Hardware) products BIFL-like quality?
I spent $4K on DWR branded bedroom drawers and many of the drawers stick. Made in Malaysia vs RH’s Made in China. Both are decent but personally don’t see either as BIFL. Herman Miller on the other hand has been really solid for me. Have lots of their furniture that is 15+ years and they are standing the test of time.

Is there a name for brands that only focus on highest quality?
Actual "luxury" to me means something that is the very best version of itself regardless of the effort or cost involved to get there. But this is far from what most "luxury" brands deliver. Most "luxury" vehicles are just pretty trash and cant hold a candle to toyotas reliability and have models that are small econoboxes or SUVs, decidedly compromised. Many luxury bag makers have "gold" hardware thats fake. But there are some that still do right. Nothing Rolex makes could be argued to be anything less than the very best technology, craftsmanship and reliability. Certain cookware like all clad are completely uncompromised. Some chairs like Herman Miller.

Everyone is going to say Herman Miller or Steelcase and they're all going to be right. Personally I'd suggest the Herman Miller Mirra 2 - it's the most adjustable. HOWEVER - you say "most comfortable" - that's not actually what you want. You want correct posture, and that isn't necessarily the most comfortable. My Mirra 2 is incredibly ergonomic (after careful adjustment) and I can sit in it for hours a day and be absolutely fine - 12+ hours a day during COVID between work and games. In fact when I have back issues from carrying a wiggly toddler, sitting in it for a few hours makes me feel better. But it's not comfortable like sitting on the sofa is.

I have had a bunch of Herman miller and steel case chairs over my career. I always buy them used for around 50% retail price. No reason to buy new. Any chair in either of their line ups would be good. If you can, find a retailer in your city, go into the store and try all of them, you’ll get a good idea of which suits you best. Right now I have an embody at my studio and an aeron classic for clients. I have an Aeron remastered at home.

I bought a 25 year old herman miller for $400. Guy I talked to clears out offices when they buy new furniture. He said a lot of places do it every 2-3 years, so these chairs don’t actually get a whole lot of sit time. Used is the way to go. I have a Aeron size C. They’re harder to find than A and B. $300 should be able to get a good condition A and B size.

A good chair new will not be affordable but totally worth the investment if you can find a way to swing it. Look for used but putting a grand into a new herman miller or steel series is well worth it. Make sure you get something with a postural head rest. Your neck and back will thank me later.

I found my herman miller at an office liquidator store. It was about $300, it's almost 15 years old but the best! Look around liquidation stores around you, give them a call and see when they'd expect to get these kinds of chairs (many companies get new budgets in the new year and may switch out office chairs early in the year).

There's obviously going to be a difference between a $100 and $1000 product. The quality is gonna be better, but one thing is that just because a chair is more expensive, it won't necessarily be better for you than some other one. Office chairs are a really subjective thing, people like to sit differently and all, so you need to try a chair before buying it. Adjustable armrests helped me the most when I had similar issues. I went with the Forma (around $720). The armrests adjust in pretty much every direction and the seat depth is adjustable too. It's been solid so far. Everyone's gonna say Herman Miller or Steelcase and yeah those are great if you have the budget, but the Forma does what it needs to without the $1k+ price tag.

What exactly makes expensive office chairs better?
Not all expensive chairs are the same. Just like clothes, some will fit your body better than others. I bought the Aeron when they first came out and the chair truly saved my back over the decades. Unfortunately, the metal frame at the front of the seat would dig into my thighs, causing discomfort and numbness after an extended period of sitting. When it was time for a replacement, I got the Humanscale Freedom Headrest in leather and have not looked back.

Herman Miller makes the best Herman Miller chairs - if new is out of budget, buy one used - you can usually find one in the sub $200 range with a little looking. Steel Case is another good option, similar price range and availability. I can speak to experience buying a used steel case, sending in a warranty request, they honored the warranty and sent me a brand new chair, even with telling them it was a second hand purchase (i only asked if I could order a replacement part because it broke)

You might want to consider a used HM chair. I just replaced the cartridge in my 30YO Aeron chair and it’s good as new. I’ve never seen anything else in the category hold up with that level of durability.

Herman Miller chairs are not uniquely ergonomic. Hell, for some people they're downright uncomfortable. What chair works best for you is a pretty personal thing. Top tier brands like Herman Miller and Steelcase are well-regarded because of build quality alongside ergonomics that work well for *many* people. If you know you want a Herman Miller, the best affordable option is just a used one.

I have Leap in the office and the Herman Miller in my home office. Both are excellent but for me the main differences are: ¹ The HM has a mesh that keeps you cool. I never get that warm feeling after seating for a while. The Leap keeps me warm ² In terms of pure comfort, I prefer the Leap. I'm quite tall and the Leap also has extends more to support my legs. ³ In terms of lumbar support, I much prefer the Herman Miller. Either way, both are excellent.

Aeron. I don't like the leather on the Steelcase plus the back looks really low. I had to buy a 3rd party headrest for the Aeron, this makes my neck hurt just looking at it. Like another poster said, the Steelcase forces you to sit a certain way. It's not for me. FWIW I bought my "remastered" Aeron from Madison Seating and while the chair is top-notch and I'm happy with the chair, the service at Madison Seating was terrible. If spending an extra $50 means better service, you may want to consider it.

I’ve had both brands. I prefer Herman miller for a hot office, but I prefer the steel case for long sitting and especially the higher back model to deep recline and take a quick chair nap in. The higher back steel case model would be my general choice, but it doesn’t look as good and is hotter in summer. Can’t go wrong with either frankly.

Ideally, you would be able to go in-person and sit on both. They're both well reviewed and have fans. I did and chose the HM Aeron. My budget only allowed for used too. I preferred the HM because there were less cushions, and I felt icky about buying used cushion. I don't know too much about Steelcase, but I can tell you about HM Aeron. They have 3 sizes, A,B, and C. Average size person is fine for B. The depth of the chairs are not adjustable. I am short. B was fine, and most of the used availability is B. I have a C at the office and it's too deep for me.

My office just switched from Aerons to Steelcases in 2022. We had the Aerons since 1997 and when we switched over, we let the employees take them home. Most of them ended up being sold on Facebook marketplace, they were all in fantastic shape except for some of the arms that needed replacing. The steelcase chairs (we got the Think model) are not quite three years old but they’re already scuffed as hell, and the leather is giving out in some places, and the lumbar support won’t stay straight in some of them. Just garbage chairs compared to the HM’s.

I just had to replace a HM AERON seat which cost about $230. The chair is about 10-12 years old before the seat frame cracked. New seat has a 3 year limited warranty on it only. I couldn’t get it through the company itself and had to go through a dealer from a list provided by HM. You should call all of the dealers to get the best price and some won’t even bother to return your call. The dealer I used was extremely quick to answer my questions and very helpful while I was dragging my feet. Much appreciated the patience and professionalism. The seat came loose in a box and with instillation instructions that made you fear touching it because anything and everything voids warranty. They did not provide allen keys for the screws which sucked and seemed they cheaped out. The seat was sliding in the package and wasn’t secure so possible damage can happen with shipment. Installation is simple but annoying. Hope that helps you with your decision. It is comfortable though.

It's my time to shine! Hey OP, I have both! It depends on what you like in a chair. I started with the Leap and later got the Herman Miller out of luck. I'd say that the Leap forces better sitting habits, but if you ignore that and start sitting in other ways anyway, you're gonna be uncomfortable. The miller is more comfortable but won't force you to sit right, so it depends on your needs.

Which you prefer will depend on your anatomy and how you move around while you sit. For me, the Aeron and Mirra are more comfortable than any Steelcase I've tried (both Leaps, Gesture, Amia, Series 2). They just suit my back the best, and I prefer their free rocking to the way Steelcases lock in place. Also, I've grown really dependent on their forward tilt feature. In comparison, other chairs now seem to sit way too far back. I'd also argue the Aeron has a stronger claim to BIFL status, since the Leap's upholstery flattens with time and is expensive to replace. The only part of the Aeron that wears out is the seat foam, which you can replace for less than $20. That said, Steelcases have a lot of advantages. The Leap V1 is the cushiest, most luxuriant office chair I've tried—you can almost treat it like a recliner. The Leap V2 is almost as comfortable despite the foam being thinner. Also, depending on where you live, Steelcases are easier to find cheap on Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist. I've snagged a Leap V1 for free and a Leap V2 for $75. I had to wait a *long* time to get a used Aeron for $300.

I've purchased each of these chairs for personal use and for me, it's an easy choice - HM Aeron. The Steelcase is so uncomfortable, I purchased the Purple Ultimate Seat Cushion to try and make it more usable. I can sit in the Aeron all day without discomfort. Both purchases were made direct from the manufacturers and each was >$1k. Are the prices you've shown for used chairs? If I was in the market again, I would not buy any office chair new. If you haven't already, seek out a used office furniture dealer, you should be able to save a lot of money for a lightly used chair. That way, if you end up not liking it, your loss is greatly reduced.

The office I work for has both. The Herman Miller ones are way older and seem to be holding fairly well. The steelcase were new when I arrived and some started to have issues a year after. Then I did my own research because I was in the market for one and noticed that Herman Miller offers 12 years of warranty if I'm not mistaken. I can't remember how much does steelcase offered, but I remember it was less. Therefore I went with Herman and those are my 2 cents.

I fucking love my Humanscale Freedom headrest. It also looks really good imo. I paid retail brand new, it was 14xx iirc and I don’t feel like I overspent at all. You can get them used for 4-600ish, a friend of mine got a leather model for 650ish from one of the used office furniture websites and it was immaculate. I think the basic recommendations are great. Leap V2 is a really great chair. The HM Aeron works for a lot of people but personally I hate the mesh seat. The HM Embody is the only chair I consider in the same league as the Humanscale Freedom.

Steelcase Leap and Herman Miller Aeron are highly reviewed chairs. I actually tried both and preferred the Aeron. I also liked that there was less cushions on it as I could only afford used then. I bought it used like 5+ years ago for $450, and it's still good. Aeron has 3 sizes and B was fine (most common size). I have a C at work and it's too big and long (depth size). The downside of the Aeron is that there is no ability to change the depth of the chair.

I've been sitting in a Mirra for going on a decade now and I can't see myself needing anything more. Lumbar support is good, mesh seat and plastic back are well ventilated, I've never had any need for a head rest. Picked it up for \~£180 from an outlet, it's without a doubt the lowest investment to highest use item I own by a large margin, with only computer monitors and wired headphones coming anywhere near in cost compared to time used.

Herman Miller and Steelcase are popular recommendations and different designs fit different people. I like the Herman Miller Aeron enough that I bought a used one for my home office, and I had an officemate who liked his Herman Miller Embody. About any of those can be found used within your budget, and they are both reliable and repairable to make them truly BIFL.

I owned an Aeron after lusting over it for years until i could justify it. Sold it after a couple years because the mesh sagged enough that the front frame bit into my legs creating discomfort and circulation problems. (Btw, at time i was fit, athletic, not heavy at all so my body mass shouldn’t have been an issue) Can’t consider an Aeron as BFL based on my experience. Prior to that i had a Herman Miller Equa. It was the perfect chair. Wish i still had it.

I think that first one is a Herman Miller Reaction. Aside from being generally kinda boring to look at, they're actually really solid chairs that should last you a good long while. $150 for a used one seems pretty steep to me (at $100 I'd consider), but you could do a LOT worse.

You need to get lumbar support as well. I know a lot of used chairs are sold without the lumbar piece. Be aware of that and if it's missing you should buy a knock off from Amazon. Also for neck pain a chair won't help really. I bought a knock off head unit from amazon and it's incredible.

Aeron is a great choice. But also check out the desk chairs made by Humanscale. They have a really nice alternative to the Aeron. Currently I am using their Saddle Stool and I like it much better than a chair. Easy to get in and out of. Encourages you to use your back muscles and not slump. When not in use fits neatly under the desk. Comes in great colors. Looks really good without overwhelming the rest of the room.

The Herman Miller Aeron is built to be repaired, not discarded. It's also built to last without repairs. The most common size to find on the used office market is size "B", or two dimples. Discounted cost of a new unit with minimal options should be in the $900 range. Used in the $500 range. The gas cylinder goes out eventually, usually 15-20 years based on use. They take a bit of extra care to clean because of the nooks and crannies, but again they're built to be in use for decades, not years.

I hated the Aeron from using in multiple offices that had them. But then I went to the Herman Miller store and tried some. I had no idea they actually came in different sizes. And there was one that was so much better than the ones I've used before. So you really need to try them in person! That said... I much preferred the Embody. So I got the Logitech one. I love it, best chair I've ever used. My only gripe is I wish they made the seat fabric removable so you can wash it. Its very hard to clean while attached to the chair.

I've been using Aeron chairs for over 25 years and like them a lot — the mesh is wonderful in our hot humid climate (and no A/C). But they're not for everybody; whatever you do, go to a showroom and spend some serious time in the chairs you're considering. Ideally, your dealer will have a generous return policy. I made the mistake of thinking that "bigger is better" when I got my first Aeron, and although it was very comfortable, I went down a size when I got my second and the fit was much better. A good friend switched from the Aeron to the Herman Miller Cosm and had this to say about it: "it's lovely. There's only one thing to adjust — the height. Everything else just adapts to your body. Definitely feels like the 'next generation of the Aeron'." And one of my bosses used a Steelcase Leap that he thought helped with his bad back. I don't think you could go wrong with any of these chairs.

I bought my Aeron back in the early 2000’s from Herman Miller. I believe I paid 600-800 for it back in the day. Now they used recycled plastic and it’s more than double the price. Holy shit!! I can definitely say the Aeron is buy it for life. I’ve had it for over 20 years and it’s still rock solid as day one. I even upgraded the wheels to rollerblade wheels and it rolls as smooth as butter.

Herman Miller Aeron. Here I'm going to politely assume that there isn't something more to the story here like extremely high bodyweight, but I have an Aeron I bought used back in the 2000s and I've been in the 200-240 lb. range since then and the pellicle material hasn't developed any noticeable sagging or loss of elasticity. These chairs have a mesh back and seat so there is no foam cushioning to degrade and wear out (although the original foam lumbar pads were crap and tended to tear and fail). The Aeron is eternal, 12 year warrant, cast metal parts, service parts available, maybe needs a pneumatic cylinder every decade or so. They are widely available used on craigslist, FB Marketplace and from furniture liquidators in the $350-450 range. I recommend the PostureFit add on kit if you get one that doesn't have it. Make no mistake good furniture doesn't come cheap, but the good stuff can be buy it for life and if you're spending a lot of time in it $1000 is nothing compared to having to deal with resolving overuse injuries, muscle, joint and nerve problems from poor working posture.

There is a huge second hand market for all Hermann Miller chairs and many many retailers. You can go to actually sit on one at a retailer before you buy. Or go the second hand route. Husband is very particular and we have had zero issues with them. They have a great warranty as well.

If OP wants something a bit more breathable tho, Herman Miller Aeron Chair mesh is a good shout too. Both are built to last, just depends if you're team cushion or team mesh tbh.

A decent upholster, can easily replace the foam in just about any office chair. Herman Miller chairs are designed to have any part replaced I’ve replaced the foam on my own once in 10 years. But any half decent office chair can be deconstructed and the fabric removed, foam replaced and new fabric attached. One of my best mates is an upholsterer, he would charge about £60 to come to your house and do this job on the spot. So as long as your chair isn’t cheap shit, you should never throw out a chair because of limp foam.

Herman Miller Aeron Chair is brilliant. Steelcase Leaps is a close second. Neither are cheap, but both are leaps and bounds ahead of any "normal" chair. Remember that you might spend more time in your chair than your bed, so spend accordingly. Me - I insist on Herman Miller. I had a job a few years ago with barbage chairs. It was exhausting to sit at my desk. We replaced the chair with a Herman Miller (I had used one at previous jobs). The different was (no surprise to me) night and day. Not sore, more endurance, easier to focus. etc.... I now own one of my own in my home office. I won't sit in anything else. You can usually get them used for under $400. The new sticker prices is super high, but used.... that's the price of 2 "normal" chairs, but it will outlast them by a decade. Herman Miller Chairs tend to last a couple decades.

Everyone is different. I have had multiple back injuries and a back surgery. The Aeron was great until my body decided it wasn’t. The Embody works for me much better now but I figured out a long time ago that the best approach was either a standing desk with a good stool or a sit/stand desk. A Swopper stool works really well too. If I have to be stationary, it helps immensely for me to be stationary in a variety of positions.

I refuse to give them any more money at this point. I will see if I can find an aftermarket one, though. Good call. Then I can give the chair to one of my kids when I get the Herman Miller.

I've got a Herman Miller Embody and I love it. The Aeron was too ergo for me to comfortably WFH and game after work. I like to sit cross legged while I work and the Aeron was too rigid to be comfortable in that position. The Aeron is truly a task chair while the Embody is a chair you can live in. I've spent 8-14 hours a day in my Embody for the last 3 years and have not had any pain or issues with the chair. For your price range I would look at picking one up second hand like other posters are suggesting.

Chairs are very personal. Not every body is the same, and some people will fit some chairs better than others. As far as gaming chairs go: SecretLab is at the top, they even have the EU certifications for ergonomic chairs. Some people also swear by Herman Miller Aeron chairs, those are not comfy for me at all, and after a day of working I'm kinda sore. It's not a quality thing, it's a preference thing

I went down this rabbit hole a few years ago and saw people commonly recommend Herman Miller Aeron and Steelcase Leap. I was so close to getting secret lab as well but ultimately thought it looked hot and bulky. I went with the Aeron mainly for the mesh (more ventilation, didn't wanna overheat) and I think it works really well for me. There's a huge aftermarket for these chairs so you can easily find them for a fraction of a cost used. You can also find parts easily if something breaks. Ive tried the leap in my old workplace and it's also very comfortable, but I haven't sat in one for hours so I can't give a good review on that. But regardless of what chair you end up getting, I really urge you to try them out if you can. They're much like shoes where there's no one size fits all.

Hey friend! Have a lot of thoughts on this. For me: Herman Miller Aeron. I had a nasty back injury at the start of covid, and was working 8 hrs/day in the shittiest desk chair™. So I did a TON of research. HM, Steelcase, Markus, general gaming chairs, etc. and ended up buying a Herman Miller Aeron classic on Craigslist. Incredible chair, I'm officially a shill for them now. Since then, I've bought 6 more Aeron's for family/friends. 5 were the classic model, and I recently bought one of the new remastered series for myself as an upgrade. **For the classic model you shouldn't spend more than $350/chair.** They're incredible. Built like absolute tanks, amazing back support, great cooling, excellent 3rd party headrests, all green flags (though they collect dust and will catch headphone cords at an absurd rate). The Remastered chairs are expensive, but the Classic bought pre-owned are 1/5 the price and 90% as good IMO. Different folks prefer different chairs so definitely do test any chair out before you buy since it's an expensive purchase. Aeron authorized dealers typically only sell the Remastered so to get a true apples to apples, go to a refurbisher and find a Classic to try. Otherwise you risk talking yourself into a $1,300 brand new chair. Also try a Leap as much of the above applies. Different preferences between people. Ahnesty has a good video on how to find Aerons used from a few years ago on YT. Used that a lot.

What are some of the best products/brands you love splurging on?
Quality blender is up there for me too, I am a Blendtec guy but Blendec or Vitamix, either way, if you use a blender regularly it makes a huge difference. I also have the Dyson hair dryer, I got a deal on one of the refurbished models with a coupon, seemed like a ridiculous purchase but that thing is really good. Doubly ridiculous because I really only have a beard to blowdry but a damp neck is not a good thing if you didn't know. Since you mentioned Dyson - Their vacuums are pretty good but in the end I'm not a huge fan, I think bagless is inferior, but a great vacuum is a real convenience, not a fun one but it makes life easier. I recently bought a Sebo D4 and that thing is next-level. Zojirush water boiler/dispenser. I like electric kettles but in the USA with our 120VAC they're slow. The Zojirushi dispensers will hold water at 208º and they last forever. Older models had gaskets that required occasional replacement but they sell the parts, my current one with the double-wall design has been on pretty much for ten years straight except when I unplug it to go on vacation. Great convenience appliance for coffee and tea lovers, especially for someone who does a French press every morning. Great kitchen tools, knives, cookware, utensils. They're all just hunks of metal in the end so anything good quality is buy it for life. Apple electronics, although laptops, phones, etc. can't really be BIFL. Porsche car - Not necessarily the cheapest to keep for life but they claim 70% of the cars they've made are still on the road. Not brand-specific but decent home audio, especially a 5.1 or better surround setup for movie and TV. Even YouTube documentaries sound so much better, you get spoiled by great audio, I find even narration lacks impact and presence when I'm listening to a podcast through earbuds vs. watching on my surround system. And while audiophilia gets people spending ridiculous amounts of money with the proliferation of cheap consumer electronics the last few decades you don't have to spend much to get a way better experience. Bicycle stuff, but not really brand specific and I don't go as crazy as a lot of enthusiasts, but don't mind spending on good bikes, good gear and good accessories. Ekornes Stressless furniture - very comfortable to me, IMO even most expensive furniture isn't really comfortable or ergonomic, a lot of it is plush, superficially comfortable but not supportive and wrecks your neck and back if you spend a lot of time in it. Similarly, Herman Miller Aerons for office duty. Travelpro luggage - most of their lines aren't expensive enough to be a real splurge, but very nice and durable, way better than cheap luggage some of which seems to be single-use these days.

A huge wooden 80in long Uplift sit to stand desk with hidden cable management, Razer keyboards and mouse, Herman Miller Embody chair, a 43 in Dell 5K monitor paired with a 36in 4K monitor connected to a docking station. The best purchase however was the Ubiquiti Dream Machine SE with scream U7 Pro XGS APs throughout the house so Teams calls don't get dropped when I roam from one end of the house to another.

I used quotes because I was actually able to get it for free from an older woman on our street whose husband had passed away and was clearing out his home office. If you can swing the price, it’s absolutely worth it. You can find a ton of lightly used ones for a fraction of the price if you look at office furniture wholesalers / used furniture companies.

Yeah - They’re rubbish I bought mine at the beginning of COVID Build quality sucked and weren’t very comfy. Mostly made of cheap plywood and cheap foam, held together with staples. Looked cool though. I’ve since gone for a Herman Miller Embody, which costs a lot more - but you can get a Herman Miller Aeron for around the same price as a secret lab. I wish I’d done that.

Firstly, get a good quality office chair. Even gaming chairs are really bad. Office chairs are better in pretty much every way, especially for gaming oddly enough. Head over to r/OfficeChairs for more info. Look at spending at least $200 if not much more. Look at Facebook marketplace. In my area, marketplace has a lot of cheap herman miller and steelcase chairs because there are a lot of offices. You should be able to get a great used chair for less than $500 once you know what to look for. The cheapest way to fix your back, is to learn how to sit with proper posture. There are a few great youtube videos like [this one](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSd1sgO8cJk) that will help, but you generally need a decent chair to be able to have proper posture. In addition to posture, make sure to do some stretches every now and then. There are a lot of stretches you can do without even getting up. A good desk as well. It doesn't have to be super expensive and sit to stand, but you need more space than you think, especially working for moth. 30" of depth is a must for me. Ergonomic foot rest is a nice addition. Decent peripherals: Headphones, whether its good noise canceling headphones to focus, or the opposite with open back headphones to pay attention to your surroundings. r/headphones has helped me out before. Ergonomic keyboard and mouse. Logitech is generally a good brand, but do your research. Please get a wrist rest and a mousepad. If you can learn to get used to them, they make mice that look like shark fins, that help reduce arm strain and carpal tunnel. Additionally, since you go into the office, a good idea would be to get a mouse that has a wireless dongle, and Bluetooth, so you only need one mouse. Or just keep the nicer mouse at home and get a different one for the office if you are forgetful. Keyboards can get pretty crazy, just get a functional keyboard from a good brand and it wont die on you. r/keyboards is a good place to look if you wanted to get a nicer one. Any webcam that can do at least 1080p. Not sure if you need a webcam or not, but trust me, whatever webcam you buy is likely gonna be a bit better than a laptop webcam. This will help you look more professional. Monitor with adjustable height. Helps with the whole posture thing. An uninterruptable power supply is great especially if you have a desktop and if you have somewhat frequent black/brown outs. Just make sure you buy one that can handle whatever the maximum wattage is of all the devices plugged into it combined. If you have any questions or want any specific recommendations, just let me know. I have spent the last few years perfecting my home set up. If you only take away one thing from this comment, is learn about sitting posture and get a better chair.

A lot has to do with pressure distribution - the seat and back mesh material help distribute weight more evenly, reduce pressure points, while improving circulation even if you shift your body around or sit with one leg crossed or what ever. It’s also keeps you cooler in the summer time, though I do have to put a blanket on it first in the winter (I’m in north east). The mesh material has a bit more flex and travel compared to foam cushioned chair. When we first started working from home, I had a cheap fabric covered foam chair that started hurting my back 2-3 hours in. Then the next day I’d go in the office that had Herman Miller chair and I could sit all day with zero issues or back pain. So I figured out it was my sitting arrangement at home and bought a mesh/mosquito chair to replicate the one in office. No more back pain. I really wanted the same Herman Miller than the office provided, but I couldn’t justify 1k price tag, so I bought one in $300 range. Pricey, but it’s probably the best part of my office setup.

First ergonomic chair advice
Do you know your measurements? A good chair, like good clothing, is made better by being fit to your measurements. Knowing the distance from your inside knee to the floor helps you pick a chair that will go low/high enough for you to be in a comfort position. I like to be able to adjust 10 degrees +/- from 90 degree knee bend for my comfort range. I have a long torso as well so I needed arm rests that could adjust so that my elbows rested on them naturally with my arms at the side, knowing my seated distance from butt to bent elbow helped me eliminate chairs. Well you covered #1--- I bought a reconditioned Herman Miller Embody when I was going to be working 10 hours a day in a chair. Game changer---worth EVERY cent. I'm not promoting the Embody---other people love other Herman Miller Chairs, others love Steel Case--my body, this worked best--the Embody. (there's an office chair sub on reddit and plenty of better off reddit stuff). Organizers--having plenty of on hand Manilla folders and file cabinets (with hangers) to accomodate being organized. A dedicated drawer to office supplies-staples clips, binder clips , stapler, scissors ruler a few pens...game changer. Battery back up with a surge protector that covers power spikes. AC unit (window unit) in the room, space heater too. Big water bottle (the 5 gallon) with a pump unit (Amazon sells these so you don't need a whole water heater)

Mine and my wife's were both technically "scratch-and-dent," mine has some damage to the cushion that hasn't spread in the 5 years I've had it and my wife's looks pristine. Do that or find one used or buy one from a business that's closing an office, but get one. I sit in mine 8 hours a day for work and then sometimes another couple of hours to play video games and I feel fine.

From my experience they're super easy to clean, but ymmv. Except for dust on the underside (which Aerons do collect quite a bit if) I couldn't tell it's not brand new and I've had it for years. Depends on what part "unclean" bugs you. Also, if you haven't already, I'd go to a store and try sitting in any kind of chair you're thinking about buying first. Some people prefer the Leap, some the Aeron - you might try it and realize some chair just isn't for you

Genuinely a real suggestion! I have two Aerons and have helped buy 4 others for family & friends over time. If you're buying from a refurbishment store it's much less likely to be an issue, but if you're buying off Craigslist, you definitely don't want to get home. only to figure out the chair is gross. It's a very small check for an expensive thing. Since there's no stuffing just mesh, if it's visibly clean & smells normal then it's fine. If someone spilled gasoline on it or something, you'll know.

Best thing I bought in the past 5 years was a reconditioned Herman Miller Embody. I work sometimes 9 hours ---had every manner of Staples Chair, Amazon chairs over the years. Pain went away. Worth every scent --cost me about $600. I went to a place that had Steel Case and Herman Miller across many models. Chairs are very personal- I'm glad I tried them before I buyed them as they say.

Best options are Herman miller Aeron and steel case leap v2, I use an Aeron in the office and a leap v2 at home. The Aeron forces proper sitting position which can be annoying but does let you work long hours, the leap is very adjustable and lets you sit however you want. I highly recommend finding them used even if you have to referb them, they’re not like cheap chairs that are junk if any part fails, you can get replacement parts, I got mine used from a store that does office chair referb so it came with new upholstery which was nice. If you go Herman miller please reference their size guide, chair size is indicated by bumps on the back near the top, 1 bump = small, 2 = medium etc

Herman Miller Aeron chair. It is the iconic best office chair of the 20th century. Lots of great competitors to it now though but the warranty from Herman Miller is amazing and I think 11 years. But, the real amazing thing is even outside of warranty they can perform repairs for less than you would think. The mesh seat can be replaced for under $100.

You know I never really understood why Aerons are so popular. My work has these things all over the office and they're garbage to sit in (and yes, they're HMs and not knock offs). Every single one I've ever sat in feels rickety and cheap. The arm rests are not bad but sitting in them for any amount of time isn't great. I'm much prefer the Embody if we're talking HM or the Hamilton Fern.

I was having problems with one knee, and I could not sit with my knees bent for very long. I work at home and spend all day in front of a screen. Conventional desk/chair wasn't going to work. I have this setup -- Stressless recliner/ottoman with attached laptop tray. Recliner moves with you as you change positions. Laptop tray swivels every which way. I can rest my elbows on the chair arms as I type. Shove it out of the way when you're not using it. Easy to get in and out of. It ain't cheap, but...geez, it's so comfortable and well built. Had this for about 10 years now. Still looks brand new. (This isn't me, but this is exactly what I have.) As a restless sitter, this chair was absolutely game changer for me. No more back pain. I absolutely do not sit with both feet flat on the ground. I rock the chair and swivel around. Occasionally tuck a leg underneath but mostly the rocking and swiveling hits those restless-leg-urges. The chair is wonderful but it’s not one size fits all. I did go to the Herman Miller store and sit in chairs for about an hour before finding my exact model. Maybe the Aeron just isn’t your chair?

Well, Herman Miller makes more than just Aerons. Supposedly the Embody is much more forgiving and the back looks super comfy cause it kinda hugs you. I've also heard a lot of good things about the Steelcase Amia. I've only got personal experience with the Steelcase Leap 2 andthe Herman Miller Aeron (Remastered, size B). Both had their good and bads. Leap 2 was more comfortable to sit in when in random posture positions but it got hotter and the tailbone pain issue I had with it was a deal breaker. Aeron was not as comfortable for long sitting sessions but that's because I don't sit in the one position it wants you to be in. I want to try an Amia or its frankenstein version, the Lamia.

As an Aeron owner, I cannot recommend highly enough to make sure you enjoy sitting in it before buying it. At that price, you can probably flip it with a profit because Aeron buyers are serious. They're well made chairs that can have parts replaced and rehabbed so you could very well buy it and maintain it for life. (Or until HM stops making replacement parts, don't hold your breath) My only complaint is the lack of back height and head support, but they make head rests. The Aeron comes in 3 sizes, A B and C, make sure you get the right one. You can google an Aeron buying guide and it will give you so much info. Good luck!

Yes. Every part is replaceable and Herman Miller is still selling them. There's a reason so many office chairs are Herman Miller. I bought my used over a year ago and it's held up so well, despite being used. I haven't noticed a drop in quality even though I sit in it for up to 12+ hrs a day. It's light while still supportive, it's solid in all the right places. I was getting back pain from my previous chair which is why I upgrade. Well worth the money. You can replace the wheels to inline skate wheels (not for actual inline skates, but in that same vein of design, they're much better for your carpet/hardwood floor and they roll much easier without being a magnet for hair). They also sell the head rest separately, which can be installed without drilling any holes. If I needed another office chair, I would 100% buy it used, as long as there wasn't any physical damage.

A Herman Miller Aeron is what I have - secondhand. BUT that alone is not enough. Consider a convertible standing desk, and even consider an under desk treadmill. One of those giant gym balls as a chair is good too. I say this as a mid-30’s woman who works (long hours) from home, has had back surgery, and is in PT for back pain now… the stiffness is greatly reduced by being able to move around throughout the day. Also, it’s generally a good idea to be sure the rest of your ergonomics are set up - screen distance, desk height, placement of mouse and keyboard etc.

That’s an amazing find! I have been exploring secondhand options more lately too, especially to avoid cheap fast furniture. If you are into quality vintage stuff like that, definitely check out Reperch in SF. They resell pre owned pieces mostly higher end stuff that’s been inspected and photographed properly. #TLDR: Ergonomic chairs from reputable brands are 100% worth the extra money. These can easily become stupidly expensive though. I own: - HM Embody (6 mo old) - Eames Lounge Chair (2 mo old) - HM Rodhe Easy Chair (2 weeks old) - Recliner from PC Richard and Son. (1yr old) In my personal experience, all but the recliner are stupidly comfortable **for my body**. Sitting and sleeping in the recliner always hurts my neck and tail bone really bad. I tested the recliner at the *PC Richard* for almost 30 minutes and thought that it was good enough for me. However, soon enough I've realized how wrong I was. I'm sure it's not the price or the materials, it's a bad design. My mom really enjoys it and thinks it's comfortable. She supports her claims by falling asleep and waking up without issues. On the other hand, getting one fancy chair (or three) is stupidly expensive and may not be worth under most scenarios. However, if you bite the bullet, you immediately notice the difference. I'm aware of the confirmation bias, and I'm sure this is not the case. These chairs feel comfortable **for my body shape and size**. I've literally fallen asleep multiple times on the Launge and Rodhe chairs not even noticing the Chair, i.e., I didn't notice any "feedback" or hotspot from the chair.

I second the Embody. I have been using it for the last year. There are Herman Miller stores that you might be able to try them out and ask questions. My thoughts are if you're a cross legged sitter, get the embody. Otherwise, the Aeron might be a great alternative. The HM warranty is great too. I believe 10 year.

Autonomous is like a 250 dollar chair, I’ve owned one, it developed an imbalance and is reasonably well constructed otherwise. I’ve since gotten a random Temu chair and honestly quite happy with it. I’ve used Herman Millers and HON ergonomic chairs but my home use case calls for an integrated footrest and high amounts of recline. Nice answer. Everyone's body is different. I had no bias--tried Steel Case , tried Herman Miller, through a personal process of elimination in a office furniture warehouse I eventually landed on the Embody and never looked back. I will say it's a chair that folks misunderstand--takes proper set up, and yes an adjustment period. I would have returned it but in about a week to ten days I never felt better. Embody . I see why it's so well regarded by Orthopedists.

and if you're sitting in a chair 8 hours a day 5-6 days a week just won't be the same as a Herman Miller or Steel Case Bonus points--you can get $1000 chairs reconditioned with some support from the resellers for considerably less. to each his own. Buy it for life is more likely Steel Case / Herman Miller and is not Office Max, Staples or Ikea----older person here having replaced all the latter stores chairs in 3-5 years. My body aches won the debate. Embody for my body has "fixed" chronic back pain that was caused by crappy chairs.

There is no one best office chair because there is no one spine. Generally though Herman Miller's top end chair that was developed post aeron, the embody is the king of office chairs. Haworth's flagship fern is nice as well. I personally hate the aeron. I've had the opportunity to test every high-end office chair on the market as many "gaming" style seats. The main deal breaker on the body is that the shoulders at roll forward a bit, and I don't like how it feels like it's pushing my shoulders forward.

my old job did a silent auction for old equipment it was a medical manufacturing place so lots of cool incubating ovens, slate tables, and monitor mounts that could hold 5-8 computer monitors I put a bid on every herman miller I saw but by the time I finished the shift every chair was already outbid(I was counting on people not knowing the value to be honest) several people walked away with herman millers for 20-40$ and each chair had maybe a year or two of use on them the most disappointing part of that job was getting home and sitting in a chair inferior to my desk's chair

As others have said, just buy a used Herman Miller, unless Steelcase fits you better. I got one Aeron from a refurbisher and two others from private sellers on Facebook Marketplace. The good thing about the Aeron in particular is that eBay is full of parts if anything breaks down the road.

That, but also: I've heard people regret spending money on a nicer car, house renovations, stupid impulse purchases. I've *never* heard of anyone regret spending money on (1) tools of their trade, and (2) things that make their back feel better. I think a good office chair is both. For us office/desk/computer workers, the chair, keyboard, and monitor are the tools of our trade. It's akin to a carpenter buying a good high-quality table saw. And while my back has ached from the hours spent in a cheapo Ikea office chair, my back has had almost no complaints about the Aeron.

Herman Miller Embody if you work from home and sit +8h a day. I previously worked on Ikea Markus and this chair was great, but for me it was not enough and after 8-10 hour sessions my back hurt. What's the current best bang for buck standing desk that WFH folks love the most?
If you can save a little longer, I would recommend two different things. A really good chair - I prefer a Herman Miller Embody (not the gaming one) but this runs about 1500 USD mininum unless you get it used. For the desk, I got a desk.haus one, but I opted for the four-legged Vertex version for stability and weight - I have a lot of stuff on the desk, it is 5 ft wide and 2.5 ft deep with a 1.5in maple slab on top. I think that ran me close to 1500. I don't do much standing now, I just choose to get out more. I prefer the chair + pacing over standing.

You need to go with a commercial grade office chair. I'd take a look at Steel Case Gesture. Not cheap but hopefully you can find it used. For reference I'm about 295# and 6'3, and haven't any issues with the chair in the last 4 years. I also have a Herman Miller Embody. It's also a good chair for the last 11 years (partner uses it now). I gave it to them and got the Gesture because I wanted a chair with a solid locking back.

WFH folks, what is the best office chair you've tried for long hours that helps with back pain?
take everyone's advice with a grain of salt as it comes down to personal preference. I bought a used HM Aeron during covid when we started WFH and it was great for the first 2 days...then I hated it. The mesh seat was super comfortable but I fidget a lot and will eventually ruin all of your sweatpants. I also cross one foot under my leg frequently and the hard plastic frame hurts my foot. If you don't do either and will wear jeans when you sit on the chair, this would be a good option to consider. I really like the arm rests. If you're not familiar, find a Design Within Reach Outlet. Herman Miller bought them in 2014 and I got my HM Embody brand new with tags, etc. for around 800\~. All inventory is factory overproduction so it comes directly from the factory but the only downside is there's no warranty. Risky but quality for HM is pretty high so likelihood of needing any warranty claim is low. Embody is pretty good and very adjustable but I hate the armrest. I also find myself constantly slouching down and needing to readjust...that's just a me problem. If you sit on your chair for hours a day, every day for work, it's definitely worth investing into it. There's also plenty of resellers on Facebook market and office liquidations

Chef Knives Swiss Army Knife Leatherman ARC Lumber boots (resole sometimes) Cast Iron cook ware bought use High quality hand tools --screw drivers sockets coping saw etc. Good quality leather jacket--though zippers may need replacing. Herman Miller Desk Chair Guitar on and on it goes.

OP, take these recs with a grain of salt. I never heard of this brand before this week, and suddenly there's a giveaway they're promoting on Reddit and this comment is on top of a "recommend me a chair" thread. I think they're astroturfing. Most would tell you that "gaming chairs" is a meaningless label meant to shovel trash to you, and that something by Herman Miller, Steelcase etc would be much better, and they're often available refurbished on on the used market from office cleanouts.

Yep, used Steelcase or used Herman Miller Aeron depending upon what feels good for you. Depending upon your area, they can often be found between $250-300 used. Check places like Craigslist or FB Marketplace and wait for a good price to come up.

Honestly, gaming chairs are the worst from my experience. A nice hefty bill for shoulder physio later, I decided to get a used Herman miller for £200. Looks decent, is comfortable as heck and has a good reputation for lasting and available replacement parts. Forget the gaming bullshit, get something that's designed to support your body and health. Whilst we are on setup, consider adding a height adjustable desk and a walking pad (if you work at your desk) to your list. Seriously improved by back and general health. Also, sorry to hear about your dad, take care mate.

I have had this Autonomous chair for about 4 years. Gets nearly daily use and has held up reasonably, except for fabric deterioration on the seat bottom. I would recommend getting the non-fabric version if anticipating heavy use This is not a BIFL chair, though. Materials and fabric on HON, Herman Miller, Steelcase are better. If I were to do it over, I’d rather get a used one of those than Autonomous.

Honest question, is the kid going to be able to do it again? Your best bet is to look on Craigslist or Facebook marketplace for a used Herman Miller Aeron. When offices close down you can usually find them for sale under 1k. They're usually in decent condition and last a long time.

Get a actually desk chair. Anything geared towards gaming is just sub par. I've tried most of the major brands at this point and I can tell you that a 150$ ergonomic mesh style chair will always be more comfortable. If you really want to get a great chair under 1k hermin miller is the gold standard of BIFL and just true comfort.

The ergonomics of the Leap is far superior to the Eames executive chair. Aesthetically, the Eames are more appealing. I have the Eames chairs around my conference table. They don’t have the adjustments or long-sitting comfort of my Steelcase. As I said, Steelcase, Human Scale or Herman Miller are probably the best office chairs.

A couple hundred for a bifl office chair is unrealistic. You can buy a used Herman Miller but it will be all plastic. Personally I'm not aware of any cotton chairs, it probably doesn't hold up so it's not a common material for chairs.

Steelcase Leap V2 (€650) vs. Herman Miller Embody (€900) – Best for Long Study Sessions?
I actually have both of these chairs right now in my house, my wife uses a leap V2 that I bought used a few years ago, and she got a killer deal on an embody through her work so during COVID we picked that up so we both had nice chairs for WFH. I prefer the embody, but only by a little. The leap is excellent, so much so that I have one at my work as well (embody was over the budget for office chairs), but if money wasn't the chief consideration, I find the embody more form fitting on my back, and it's more breathable which I appreciate.

IKEA is not fair comparison. Fundamentally IKEA products are designer products, well tested with optimised production to create low priced furniture. They are not designed to fail soon or fast. Frankly largely furnitures do not fail soon or fast either because society has figured out how to make furnitures. I think BIFL in furniture comes with the serviceability when it comes to failure. A Herman miller Aeron chair will probably be serviceable well into the next few decades because the manufacturer continues to sell parts for them.

It can be. A Herman Miller chair is expensive, but it outlasted many office supply store chairs to where it more than broke even. The caveat is that you have to actually be able to afford the damned thing. You also have to watch out because often in the mid grade, the item mostly looks fancier, but not necessarily more durable. The high-priced stuff also can fall into this (ex: Hexclad), but the Internet can help weed these out. I've been wrong about the higher-priced item being more durable, even if the company's other items are indeed BIFL For me, I like the extra durable stuff when I have money for when I run into a budget crunch. The high durability stuff won't break on me at the wrong time. It's a horrible feeling when you are on the crunch, and then one thing breaks. Then another, and another. I found that shirts from Macy's actually is more durable vs TJ Maxx and Ross. The price was 1.5-2x more, not insanely high. One factor though is that to find a shirt I like from the likes of TJ Maxx, I had to drive all over the place, so the gas price becomes an overhead. At the time, Macy's was closer and I found a shirt I liked more often at Macy's over the TJ Maxx/Marshalls/Ross. That let me open up my wallet more because it probably came close to breaking even, and I gained some time back

I've easily spent >12 hours per day at the computer for many decades, and I acquired an Aeron specifically to address chronic back pain \~2010, and my back pain was completely gone within a few days. It was as if a switch had been flipped. I'm still using that same chair today. Bought a second one for my wife when she transitioned to WFH a few years ago, and the quality is still there.

Aeron. You can get a remanufactured Aeron for $500-600. I got mine from Madison Seating but there are other companies who do the same thing. You might luck out and get one from a secondary market like Facebook Marketplace but otherwise, this is the way to go. Good luck.

I will try and find a used Herman Miller Aeron. I’ve seen people pick them up for 50 bucks at a thrift store nearly every part is replaceable if something is broken . They come in three different sizes are being the smallest and C being the widest. I can work 14-16 hour days and it’s never my back that gives me problem with that chair. When I was on maternity leave, my husband actually moved it to his office and then when I came back, I was using another chair and I told him that I needed my chair back and he told me to go buy another one because he was keeping it 😂 Thrift stores, of course are unpredictable but start checking marketplace in craigslist

Herman Miller Aeron chair is the only answer. I’ve been using the same chair every day for over 12 years, and it still looks and feels exactly the same. In contrast, I hated the design of the Steelcase chair when I used it in another office. It just wasn’t for me.

Loved my Herman miller aeron chair at my last gig. Had it for 10 years and never wished for anything else. No I have a mesh backed cushion seat no name brand chair and the only positive thing I can say that it takes a pounding from my flatulence on the reg and keeps it within my 8x8 cube.

The Herman Millis Aeron chair is the perfect example of bifl quality. Every time this topic comes up there is an overwhelming consensus that this is the chair to get. I work from home and am also an avid pc gamer. Which means I easily spend 10-12 hours in this chair every single day, and have so for the last 15 years since I bought it. This is one of the best purchases I've ever made. I'm sure there are other great chairs out there. Very few regret buying an Aeron.

Apparently mesh is the popular choice. I’ll throw my two cents in. I have a refurbished steel case leap v2. It’s generally considered the cushion counterpart to Herman Miller’s Aeron mesh chair. I love it. For the pros and cons in my research: Herman Miller Aeron is mesh and therefore breathable. It is a very adjustable chair, effectively able to conform to your body. The bad part, is that you basically have to sit in it with good posture and have the sizing right to get a comfortable sitting experience. I’m a bigger dude so I was nervous about that, plus sometimes I like to have poor posture (yes I know it’s bad). The steel case leap v2 provides a nice comfortable experience generally. It also has plenty of adjustments available for good posture comfort, and I’ve had no regrets. The downsides are less breathability in the back which is very important for some, and it has a shorter sitting period (chair cushions are usually rated for hours of use in a row, where they gradually compress over time and need time to basically reform themselves. I went from a two hour chair prior to the leap which I think after the refurb is rated for 6-8 hours and it’s been fine for me all work day with a lunch break)

I had a high end cushion before: at first it's comfortable if the chair support you well. They also look better compared to mesh. But over time the cushions get compressed and you don't realise it until you start to experience shoulder and back ache. I then switched to a Herman Miller Mira: the first two weeks were really uncomfortable: I experienced even more pain compared to the cushion chair: hamstrings, shoulders, lower and upper back everything was sore after an hour. I almost wanted to return it when suddenly it became the most comfortable chair I ever had. It turned out that I adjusted my sitting position to compensate for the cushions that started to fail (leg under my bum, slouching etc :-)), which in turn lead to poor posture. With the HM you need to have a proper ergonomic position and it may be the first time ever you sit like that. It will be uncomfortable but after that you can have full day sessions without any pain or tiredness. Five years later the mesh is still as supportive as the first day I got it. Other benefits I found of a mesh chair: much easier to clean and more comfortable during warm or colder weather.

I bought one a few years ago for myself. They are *not* buy it for life. At all. I'm in it 8-10 hours a day, 5 days a week, and the fake leather is peeling all over. One of the arm rests also split. Not at all worth the premium. I'm now looking at a Herman Miller, used.

Hell, I got a used one for like $200 and it's still going strong after five years. When it breaks, I'll just have it repaired. It's no Lazy Boy, but I would argue that you don't want any upholstery because it gets compressed and breaks down. Worse, upholstery gets *filthy*. I like the Aeron because there's no cushions or cloth to absorb sweats, farts, or whatever. If it gets dusty, you wipe it down with a microfiber cloth or a wet rag.

(Request) BIFL Furniture stores?
We're in ATL and have picked up a few pieces from our local store. Emeco's Navy Chair defines BIFL in my opinion. I don't see our Womb Chair & Ottoman, Platner Side Table, Eames Molded Fiberglass Side Chair, or other pieces falling apart in our lifetime. Or going out of style. Much of the rest of our furniture is mid-century stuff that's older than us and was purchased used. Some needed to be recovered, but it's otherwise going strong. Stuff from then and contemporary Knoll & Herman Miller is built to last. Materials and assembly are solid.
