Holy shit. My guy just got a $5K mixer for $200. I am extremely jealous.

I use mine for mixing pizza dough for large parties. I can mix enough dough for up to 10 good-sized pizzas in one go (I still use it)

Yes, exactly. Thank you for proving me right. Since they have to send out a technician to fix it, they can't afford to cut corners. Your own link raves about the build quality of the Hobart. Give it up and take the L. >It’s hard for me to tell you the Hobart is a problem-free machine that will never give you any problems, because I had a problem right off the bat. It took 3 service calls to set things right. But now that I know what happened and it has been fixed, **I think the mixer will last several lifetimes.** Keep in mind that my problem was related to noise and not to the overall mechanism that drives the attachments. If I never bothered with the noise issue, it is likely the components and machine would have never suffered any mechanical problems over its service life.

Lucky. I worked in a kitchen in high school and college and we had one of these. It made all our baked goods plus whipped butter, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, chopped sirloin, sausage and shredded probably thirty pounds of cheese daily. I don’t know how many hours that thing put in every single day and never once broke down.

My biggest regret? The first time I tried to use it, the beater didn't reach the bottom for a single egg white. Turns out I had an extra-deep bowl. Once I bought the correct shallow bowl, it was perfection

Hobart mixers are the Crown Victoria of kitchen equipment. You could run over it with a semi-truck, brush it off, plug it in, and it would work just like new

Is that a counter top hobart mixer? What the actual fuck? I've used the same 60 quart hobart mixer daily in my restaurant for the last 20 years. That thing is going to be fully functional long after you break down. Nice find!

This is why I love buying commercial equipment. Bought a stainless steel bar blender at a garage sale. The company has been making the exact same blender since the 1950's.

Hobarts are not aimed at high end consumers. The target market for a Hobart is someone who is going to lose a grand a day if their mixer breaks down. They aren't cutting corners.

Except that thry still do. Hobart is a restaurant equipment company, That is still in business. They would just be a hell of a lot more expensive than what the OP paid new.

The N50 doesn't move. Period. While the KitchenAid used to walk across my counter when kneading stiff doughs, the Hobart just sits there like an immovable object. The weight is a feature, not a bug

That thing is an absolute beast. You will never need another mixer. The N50 is a generational machine—you buy it once, and your grandkids will be making dough with it lol

Looking for a kitchen gadget that’s actually worth spending extra on
Depends on if they get used -- and how often. For me, the "worth it" appliances are: * Robot Coupe R2 Dice with all the attachments (there are two kinds of food processors -- Robot Coupe and "less than.") * BlendTec blender * Robot Coupe or Vitamix stick blender (big price difference here -- the Robot Coupe is superior, but at a hefty price increase) * Kitchenaid (or better yet Hobart) stand mixer with at least the grinder attachment if not others * PolyScience Sous-Vide pro * MoccaMaster and LaPavoni coffee makers * Zojirushi or Cuckoo rice cookers My coffee grinder is no longer made. So I bought a couple burr replacements. It is unlikely to ever die.

What’s something you’ve bought once and never had to replace?
KitchenAid mixers made before 1986, when they sold to Whirpoool Any mixer you can find that says “”Hobart” on the side runs like a tank. My mixer is 50 years old and I just took it apart and replaced it and it looks gorgeous

Thoughts on Hobarts and other industrial dishwashers?
I hate that this is an 8 year old thread. I did exactly this: I bought one of those Hobarts used and put it in my kitchen. My husband had to rewire it to 220, and that was fine. It fit right where my old one went. This is the thing a lot of people do not account for: a commercial dishwasher is over built for household use. As a result, it never broke or needed major maintenance. (It truly isn't that complicated of a machine; just delime cycle from time to time.) It was used when I got it, lasted for years. It still runs now, I just moved. The new house is significantly harder to run new wiring for, so I don't know if I will ever get around to doing it again, but it was 100% as amazing as you think it would have been. The only caveat is that the racks take up a good deal of space when you're running it and it isn't a set-and-forget type thing like most household units, so you tend to let it warm up, run a few cycles, putting things away, etc. then turn it off. It was a very different system, but I liked it better.

kitchenaid alternatives that aren't hot garbage
I've had my kitchen aid mixer for years without issues. I'm not saying they are perfect and without flaws (there's a whole bunch of people who sell parts to essentially upgrade them and to repair them). But, more often than not, people use them incorrectly, and end up stripping the gears (which is a shitty plastic piece but very replaceable) by mixing at too high a speed for certain dough's or by overfilling with ingredients. If this was the case for you, even a commercial mixer will have issues unless you learn what it can take. But regardless, take it to a repair shop first as it may be a simple inexpensive fix. If you still need a rec, I've only heard good things about Ankarsrum (never used it though so do some research), every bakery I worked at had a large Hobart mixer. They make smaller at home ones, and we certainly had a few at said bakeries that held up very well. I forget the models but it was a countertop kitchen aid type.

Brands That Used to Be BIFL — But Aren't Anymore?
The original dishwashers made by Hobart were indestructible. My mom still has a working one from 1980

I’ve gone through three cheap blenders and they all died within 2 years! What’s the most BIFL blender out there that can actually crush ice and last decades?
Or presumably Hobart if the price is not an issue. (They made Kitchen Aid mixers before selling the brand to Whirlpool.)

My wife's "new" Hobart mixer
Personally I'd pay the $1500 to service an old A200 over buying a new HL200 all day long.

The last slicer I’ll ever buy
It has automatic slicing at a lower price point. It was half as much as Hobart or globes with the auto slicing.

Hobart bandsaws and mixer/ grinder. They’re all from the 60’s and purely mechanical.

KitchenAid my mother got as an engagement gift in 1977. She gifted it to me when I got engaged; still going strong.
I have a 1980’s Hobart. No issues whatsoever.

Black Friday / Cyber Monday megathread: Post any deals on BIFL items here!
Yes the idea is to just go and buy the plastic piece that saves the motor. Get a pro model if you want that piece in metal but maybe it will burn out the motor if you make tons of dough? Or get a hobart or something. The Hutterites use them everyday and the Hutterites are stingy and wear their shit into the ground so you know it's good.
