  4100tn is a workhorse of a printer. I can't speak for the newest HPs but pre 2010 lasers were tanks and ultra reliable. We will see if my M47dn lasts as long as my old 4M Plus. I doubt it 😂

  Still rocking a LaserJet P2035n, it just refuses to die. I believe it's over 20 years old at this point, but like my old washer and dryer it's just been too dependable to throw out and I know they don't make them like they used to. That said I wouldn't ever buy an HP as long as I live, they seem to have forced a firmware upgrade on my newer inkjet that bricked my stack of remanufactured cartridges and I'm very, *very* unhappy about this.

  I used to fix these back in uni. They're built to last even 6 feet under, face down and buried at a crossroads. Daily driver is a p1005 hooked into a raspberry pi, so I'm about 5 years off. Someone somewhere will have 1 of the sour cream hp laser jet 4's if they can still find an lpt adapter.

  I have a 4100DN that replaced a LJ4+. I only upgraded because the idle power consumption is WAY lower. I had to replace the manual tray pickup rollers. Toner is cheap, and lasts for years. I'll never own another inkjet printer.

  My HP laserjet has been going strong for years. It is the only printer I have ever had that didn't make me want to chuck it out a window. Not saying HP doesn't suck. Just that I finally had one of their products that I didn't regret buying.

  Probably won't be with me much longer, but 15 years ago, I worked at a lawfirm and they retired an HP Laserjet 2200 printer. At the time, it probably printed 100 times the volume it was designed for. I still have it, and have been using it as my only text printer (I have a separate photo printer) and it hasn't broken or failed.

  What is the equivalent of "Apple removed 3.5mm jack" of your favorite products ?

  I print so seldomly that HP Instant Ink works great for me. I'd rather pay a nominal $1-2 a month and just have ink shipped to me whenever I run out, vs dunk $30-40 every time I need a new cartridge. Definitely not for everybody, but works for me.

  Yeah, I was going to ask whether Dad actually needs color printing. I have an old HP (B&W) LaserJet. It does duplex printing and has a pretty small footprint. It's not wireless, though. The cartridges are not cheap, but they will last for probably years if you're only printing a 10-15 pages per month. I would just go to FedEx if I needed color printing.

  I have had absolutely zero issues with our HP office jet (Office jet pro 8740). The thing is a beast and takes up a bit of space. Unfortunately it was discontinued years ago and I really don't know if there is an equivalent today. It is going on close to 15 years old. It has outlasted it's predecessor by a couple years (knock on wood). When you buy any brand of electronics, it is best to avoid the brand's entry level product lines. Obviously affordability does play into the equation.

  Multi function? Not really. Laser Monochrome? If you can get an old HP Office Laser printer, those things have been working fantastic since the 90s. I'm sure HP has gone to shit on their laser printers since then. but holy crap those old HP Laser printers last. Don't buy new HP though. They're an extremely exploitative company, at least in the printer department.

  HP Printers used to be built like tanks and last forever. My family had one that lasted well over a decade and printed great. Now they're garbage and they try to lock you into subscriptions and force you to buy their expensive ink by chipping their printers so you can't buy it from 3rd parties.

  My freshman year 1979 HP41CV calculator, from when Hewlett-Packard wasn't a steaming pile of shit. It actually had a battery leak in it around 1994. I contacted HP, I mailed it to them, they actually repaired it and sent it back. They didn't replace it because it had the same scratch on the screen it had when it left. Imagine that - non disposable electronics.

  Dad Needs a New Laptop

  I prefer Mac for my personal and work machines, but no modern Mac laptop is BIFL. While they tend to last a long time, they are difficult to impossible to repair if something does go wrong. Business laptops aim for tough and repairable. Lenovo, HP, and Dell are often mentioned. Framework takes repairability to another level though, as you can actually upgrade the laptops with new parts over time. They’re a fairly new company though, but they have supposedly lived up to the promise for the most part.

  Electronics with a warranty and good return policy are the best refurb / used things to buy. I’ve bought refurb monitors, laptops, and pc parts all with no problems. Lenovo, HP, and Dell often have some pretty good prices on refurbished equipment. I’d go straight from manufacturer. Though I did get a used projector from Amazon Warehouse with no problems

  Dad Needs a New Laptop

  The laptop that lasted the longest for me was an HP. I’ve been buying other brands for the last few years and they never last more than 2 years for me. I’m a gamer and the fans always die to a point that replacements only last a month. Just went back to HP and expect to get a minimum of 5 years out of it. Got an OMEN because I’m a gamer but your dad shouldn’t need something that serious. My old HP lasted me almost 10 years before I couldn’t play anything on it but it never officially died like the others.

  Be aware that Win10 support is ending soon so if you don't want to go Mac or Linux you need to get something with Win11. I just bought a used HP Zbook Fury G7 because my G3 is not Win11 compatible but that may be overkill for his needs, it was $400-something. I do a lot of CAD work and have been using Zbooks at work for over a decade, so my desk is set up with a HP dock and I can just trade work and personal laptops if they're both compatible.

  Poly voyager 2. Probably the best noise cancellation headset (active) I have ever used. It's super light so it doesn't leave a pain on top of my skull and battery lasts all day. I had zoom calls on a train with a screaming baby in the seat next to me with nothing being picked up.

  The AMD Ryzen™ 7 PRO 8840HS is a beast of a processor and with integrated AMD Radeon 780M you should be able to see a performance boost for your softwares. And with 32GB memory you should be able to multi task really well. However the processor is strong so you will trade some battery life for it. I would say expect 8-10 hours instead of other laptops that can do 16+ hours like the macbook air. I think its a good deal especially upgrading to your existing HP envy laptop

  Honestly, there’s no single “best” laptop for everyone, depends on what you want to do. I’ve tried a bunch of these and here’s my take: If you just want the best all-around laptop and don’t mind the price, the MacBook Air 2025 (M4) is hard to beat. Battery lasts forever and it’s super fast for pretty much anything except gaming. If you’re already using iPhone or iPad, it just works better. If you game a lot, get the ASUS ROG Strix G16. It’s fast, runs cool, and the screen is really nice for games. Not the lightest thing but worth it if you care about performance. HP 17 Laptop is honestly good if you need something cheap but still powerful. Huge RAM and storage so it won’t slow down with tons of tabs open or big files. Screen isn’t full HD though, so keep that in mind. Dell Vostro 15.6" is solid for students—good build, decent price, can handle schoolwork easily. Lenovo V15 is a safe choice if you’re mostly doing office stuff, emails, docs etc. So yeah, pick based on what you actually need it for. No point spending extra on stuff you won’t use tbh.

  I passed the 4-year mark with my 2021 HP Envy with the GTX 1650. Checked the battery health and it was still 80%. I have a replacement battery on the way. YMMV, but I’d spend more time researching replacement battery availability over specific models, as those tend to go first.

I’ve had i9 priced around 2.6k and it was awful, thought it was just bad luck and had it replaced 2 times before realizing it’s just lenovos. All my colleagues have had similar experience.   Oh that’s disappointing to hear. We had a bad run of t14 g3 with battery life issues which we managed to get cleared under warranty but the issues in those devices all showed up in a matter of months and we’ve not really had issues since. Anecdotally I’ve heard the new Gen HP Elitebook fleets tend to do alright too, apparently the Dell Latitudes can be a bit temperamental for some config stuff but haven’t heard anything bad about hardware failure.

  If you already have apple products go for macbook, you won't be disappointed. If you want to try out windows laptops try business series: Lenovo Thinkpad, Dell Latitude, HP Probook (just as an example, do not buy them). They have extended warranty and are overall better built and designed.

  Yeah agreed, why go with a brand that is hostile to their users when there are options that are not? I have an HP M477fnw and it has worked great for me, so far it hasn't done any DRM fuckery with 3rd party toner cartridges. But I actively avoid installing firmware updates, and if it ever dies or they implement cartridge blocks, I'll likely be buying a Brother.

  I looked at the cost per page when I bought my color laser jet: hp color laserjet pro m478f The up front cost was high, and the supplies are expensive when you have to buy them but in five years, I've only had to replace cartridges once. I'm not close to needing a drum. No down days, beautiful full color (that also duplexes and copies). So for me it has been a good choice.

  Any Good Printer For Home Use?

  I’m currently using an HP Color LaserJet MFP M283fdw and an old LaserJet Professional P1102W. Was a bear to connect to wireless and keep connected, but it prints B&W single-sided fine, and toner is reasonable and long-lived. I’ve had inkjets (Canon did great glossy prints), but buying ink is crazy maker, $$$-wise. And so much ink gets wasted to avoid clogging. Never again, unless it’s one of the poster-size plotters… My CLJ MFP M282fdw works, does nice two-sided printing. Scans and copies well. HP color toner cartridges are stupidly overpriced, and HP just pushed a firmware update that actually prevents the use of 3rd party toner carts. This is unacceptable. Never buying HP again. Does AirPrint for mobile devices that support it. But network/wireless can be cranky. And HP makes the worst printer software in the world. Consistently, over decades. Funny, for a company that built and sold computers that ran good software. Many commentators say plainly: get a Brother monochrome laser jet. It just works.   Recommend me a printer/scanner

  If I could find a HP 5si (old B&W laser) and could be confident they'd still sell toner and parts for it I would. Wikipedia says it was introduced in 1996 and we had one in the office I worked in 15 years later and the f'er JUST WORKED. I guess printers are like cars, they don't make 'em like they used to?

  My everyday monochrome printer is an OLD laserjet - a HP P2015DN. My opinion is that it was discontinued because it was too good. The DN is a network attached (or USB) double sided 26 pages-per-minute monochrome printer that just plain works (about 10ppm when printing double sided). It does 8.5 x 11 or 8.5 x 14 paper. The P2015 is the basic single sided USB printer. add a D=double sided. Add an N for Ethernet. A 53X cartridge is about $100 and lasts me years... about 2 to 3 cents per page. The 53A cartridge is good for about 3,000 pages and the 53X is about 7,000 pages. I acquired my first one at a business auction about 20 years ago. I started looking for a second when a bearing started to squeak. When the formatter board died that forced my hand. I found a almost-new (under 1200 page count) on on eBay for $50 plus $40 shipping. It came with a 53A that was half used. Configuration is done with a browser pointed at it's IP address. As far as i know the firmware is NOT field upgradeable.

Even paying the upper end of market value for the used market, you still get a much nicer product than what the same money would buy new, and you get to help keep more unnecessary stuff from being produced Its a bit intimidating to start buying expensive stuff online, but once you get a feel for how sellers in a particular niche tend to advertise and document things, you can get a very good idea of how the things will function.

  Their boots are great though tbf. Comfy out of the box from day one, good for 3 wet/snowy seasons out of the year, and they will resole them for you, if possible, rather than you having to buy a new pair.

  I'll have to agree with you here. Elitebooks are still solid, their consumer line is meh but honestly improved from the 2010s IMO. They're not any worse than Dell, Lenovo et al.

  I bought HP multi-function laser printer about a decade ago. I *never* let it talk to The Internet ... and never will ... and thus far keeps on workin' fine. Has paid for itself many times over in savings compared to any ink jet printer.

  Are you comparing them to consumer (cheap) HP laptops or business range HPs? My FW13 is about 80-90% as rigid as my former HP ProBook, but both are leagues above my consumer HP laptop (which honestly was closer to E-Waste than a laptop).

  I've had nothing but problems with our newest thinkpads. One broke the hinge in the left side of the screen. The other came unscrewed on the right side hinge and the screw roll around damaging the motherboard. Before that we had a thinkpad that we had to replace the keyboard on every ~6months. We have started switching the the HP z-books and have not had issues thus far.

  HP for consumers: utter shit. HP for business: Actually built well, mostly metal construction, strong hinges. I work in IT, we use the business models at my work, they've been great for the last decade, I even recommend them to friends and family who have old laptops that are falling apart. My current work laptop is an HP G6 and it's nearing 5 years of use, no issues.

  If you are ruling out a mac pro next best is Dell precision or Lenovo P series. These are both workstation type laptops made for more demanding business use. Dell and lenovo both have on premise warranties. There is a significant cost to the manufacturer if there are hardware problems. So they are relatively easy to repair, with a metal chassis and available replacement parts. They support the top of the line hardware, a good step up. Most models have 32gb of ram, higher performance cpus as standard, dedicated video card. Dell latitude, lenovo thinkpad, hp probook are good if you don't need the higher specs but still want repairability.

  The answer no one wants to hear is that the MacBooks have, by a cavernous margin, the best durability and longevity. But on the windows side, Dell and HP have both been fine recently. HP’s been a bit hard to judge; during/after COVID they just couldn’t fulfill orders in a reasonable timeframe, so we have fewer in service of modern models, but they still seem good. Imo though Dell has got the “workhorse” crown for basic reliability and durability. They’re boring but they get the job done.

  What you want to buy is a business-class laptop with the latest generation processor from AMD or Intel. It should be a model that comes with a 3-year or longer warranty standard. The warranty is the key here - that’s how you get better quality. Business-class laptops are easier to repair and generally have spare parts available too. A laptop with a standard 1-year warranty with add-on warranty available isn’t the same quality level as one that comes with a longer warranty standard. Also, don’t buy any laptop from a big-box store. They are most likely to have corners cut in the manufacturing. Call the manufacturer and ask what models have the best warranty available without an add-on warranty. As about any deals or specials on those models. HP for example sells ‘smartbuy’ models that save money over a custom order build. HP - Zbook Dell - Latitude or Precision Lenovo Thinkpad Fujitsu Lifebook Panasonic $$ Getac $$ There are probably a couple other manufacturers out there worth buying, but these are the ones I’ve bought plenty of over many years.

  A lot of people are going to tell you ThinkPads. Please don’t listen to them. They used to be fantastic and I recommended them for years myself, but the models from the last 5 or so years have gone to absolute shit. They cheaped out on materials, QC, and even design basics to a *huge* degree. I oversee purchasing of more laptops in a month than most people would see in a hundred lifetimes, and I promise you don’t want a ThinkPad anymore. I build my desktops and use MacBooks for my personal laptops so I don’t have a great recommendation for you maybe; Dells or HPs seem to genuinely be the most reliable at least these days.

  My wife and I both have HP laptops and I don't think I will buy anything else. I've been very happy with them and I've not seen another company be so supportive of right to repair. They sell spare parts for their laptops and have teardown videos for all their models. My wife's laptop had a mobo issue after ~3 years and I was able to actually buy a higher trim motherboard and CPU and swap it in. I just reassembled my laptop (~6 years old) today after replacing the display (water damage). Both of those repairs were completed with the assistance of the HP support teardown videos.

  For general tasks, a lot of people have long lasting MacBooks. I find Apple OS atrocious though. For gaming/long term I think you have to research internal components and hope for the best. You’re really just rolling the dice now days. I have an HP laptop from 10 years ago that’s hanging on by a thread but it will still run wow. I’ve had other people with HP laptops that died after 9 months. My dell work laptop has been great so far. My coworkers died instantly. The laptop market space is saturated and everyone is looking to drive down costs. You’ll have to hunt reviews and I would even research mobile graphics cards to see if some are more efficient/dependable than others.

  If you print even a decent amount get a laser. They cost more but don’t waste ink on cleaning cycles. Have had mine since 2015. It’s a color laser from HP. Model isn’t made anymore. I buy toner every 3-4 years.

  HP does make some printers now that use ink tanks. I too was using it not frequently enough to keep the ink from drying out. I think most inkjet printers kind of suck, but this one sucks less than previous ones I've had.   I’m going to be honest I’m really confused on this whole subscription thing. I have a HP printer that’s probably 7 years old. Never signed up for a subscription, I just go buy a new HP ink cart from the store when it runs out and it’s printed without issue for years. Everyone rages against HP but if you’re not trying to use their subscription marked ink carts it’s not a problem. I will admit, I have not tried non-HP brand ink carts.

  Older HP M277 or 276 series are good and generic toner is available for them costing 50-100 bucks for 4 colors that will last around 4000 pages of printing. To be honest though, most are disposable once you get below $200.
